Five ways to improve the stability of your marriage

    page views:1  Publication date:2023-05-03
When a couple's feelings for each other fade, many choose divorce, making marriage seem so fragile! However, a report published in the American magazine *Prevention* points out that if both partners meet certain conditions, the likelihood of divorce decreases significantly. The following five patterns, though seemingly strange, are closely related to the stability of a marriage.
Five ways to improve the stability of your marriage
1. A wide, broad smile in childhood photos. A study from DePauw University in Indiana, USA, found that people who smiled the most broadly and brightly as children were more likely to avoid the shadow of divorce as adults.
This is mainly because people who smile broadly in photos when they are young, especially women, tend to have more stable character and are generally more optimistic. These two personality traits increase marital stability. So, when looking for a partner, look at his (or her) smile in family photos.
2. Neither spouse has ever cohabited with another partner before marriage. According to a study by Ohio State University, if one spouse has cohabited with someone else before marriage, the probability of divorce skyrockets by 209%. A history of cohabitation suggests a person is less likely to keep their promises, can easily end a serious relationship, and always feels there are other "options" in marriage.
3. Having two or more sons. A Columbia University study of 43,000 marriages found that couples with two sons were 17% less likely to divorce than couples with two daughters. Researchers explained that couples with multiple sons tend to be more deeply involved and attached to their marriage. The study also found that couples with one son were about 3% less likely to divorce than couples with one daughter.
4. Couples often have many mutual friends on social media, but these friends do not know each other. Through research on millions of Facebook users, Dr. Klingberg, a computer scientist at Cornell University, found that couples having mutual friends is evidence of a deep and stable marital relationship.
5. Couples using only one or two social media sites. Oxford University researchers found that the more social media sites couples use, the lower their satisfaction with their marriage. The researchers explained that using many social media sites weakens the bond between spouses.
