Marriage is not the grave of love.

    page views:1  Publication date:2023-05-09
Is marriage the grave of love? Wrong! Couples who don't get married are more likely to break up. The longer a couple is together, the less likely they are to break up. Couples who are just starting out have almost an 80% chance of breaking up, but for couples who have been together for over 40 years, the breakup rate drops to less than 10%, and in some groups it even approaches zero.
Many people say marriage is the grave of love, but quite the opposite, scientists have found that unmarried couples are more likely to break up, regardless of whether either partner is heterosexual or homosexual. This study, conducted by a team of American scientists, tracked over 3,000 people for several years. Let's take a look at what interesting phenomena they discovered.
Professor Mike from Stanford University led the study, and his team has tracked the romantic relationships of over 3,000 people since 2009. The researchers focused primarily on the development of participants' romantic relationships, including when they met their partners and when they broke up. "Existing research focuses mostly on healthy relationships, but doesn't explain many unsuccessful ones. We wanted to find out."
The longer you love someone, the less likely you are to break up.
By tracking these 3,000 people, scientists have indeed discovered some interesting phenomena. The most significant is that the longer couples have been together, the less likely they are to break up. In other words, the probability of breaking up is inversely proportional to the length of time they've been together. Specifically, couples who have just started dating have almost an 80% chance of breaking up, but for couples who have been together for over 40 years, the probability drops to less than 10%, and in some groups, it even approaches zero.
Although the probability of couples breaking up decreases significantly with increasing time spent together, differences are also observed between heterosexual and homosexual, married and unmarried groups.
Marriage makes relationships more stable. Heterosexual unmarried couples are most likely to break up; homosexual unmarried couples have a slightly lower chance of breaking up; homosexual married couples have a slightly higher chance of breaking up than heterosexual married couples, but a significantly lower chance than homosexual unmarried couples. Heterosexual married couples are the least likely to break up.
Generally speaking, regardless of whether they are heterosexual or same-sex, married couples are not very likely to break up. Specifically, for same-sex married couples, the probability of breaking up after 5 years is about 8%, and after 20 years, only about 1% of them will break up. For heterosexual couples, the probability of breaking up after 5 years is 3%, and after 20 years, less than 1% of them are likely to break up.
So what about unmarried couples? They are much more likely to break up than married couples. Even if they have been together for more than 20 years, the probability of same-sex unmarried couples breaking up is still 5%, while the probability of opposite-sex unmarried couples breaking up is about 10%.
Stop saying marriage is the grave of love; in reality, marriage may be the strongest bond that keeps two people together. Modern people seem to have less and less patience to get to know, understand, and spend time with their partners, and fast-food culture has long since permeated the public's view of love. However, decades of tracking and data tell us that sometimes, perhaps we don't understand our own inner voice. We say, "If you don't love me, let's break up"; we also say, "We'll support each other through thick and thin, I won't let go of your hand."
