Chapter Sixty-Eight: Dou Xianniang's Clever Jailbreak
and Liu Shoubei's Fierce Battle at the Yamen It is said that Dou Jiande and Liu Heita, after discussing their plan, selected two hundred and ten men from the seven villages of Dou, Sun, Gao, Cao, Liu, Xu, and Zhao. Each man was strong and skilled in martial arts. Jiande ordered Zhao Datong to lead thirty men to wait at the west gate. If chaos broke out in the city, they were to quickly guard the gate and not allow anyone else to close it. This was the only way out of the city, extremely important, and could not be neglected. If the way out was cut off, the whole affair would be ruined.
Datong gladly accepted the order and headed towards the west gate. Jiande then said to Cao Rucheng, "Fifth Brother, please lead thirty village men and station them around the Protectorate General's office. Since there's been a disturbance in the city, the Protectorate General will have to go out to quell the unrest. When he comes out, we can surprise him and kill him. The soldiers will be in a panic and won't be able to resist. We'll have fewer men to fight back, saving us a lot of trouble.
" Rucheng then led the thirty village men away. Jiande then said to Shida, "Eldest Brother, you can lead thirty village men to storm into the magistrate's residence, cut off that corrupt official's head, and then set it on fire.
The village men can set fires and shout near the magistrate's office to create a great disturbance!" Shida was overjoyed and immediately wanted to go. Jiande said, "Don't rush. I have some more instructions, elder brother. Remember them well: wait until after the meteor explodes before you act. Don't act rashly and ruin everything!" Shida nodded and said, "I understand." Jiande then let him go and said to Xu Yuanmao, "This matter depends on you, second brother." Yuanmao asked, "What is it?" Jiande said, "After the prison break is completed, second brother, go forward to provide backup and ensure their escape from the city. If there are pursuers, you must fight and retreat, and do not seek victory by killing. This is the most important thing. You should also take thirty men and wait at the Water King Temple, which is very close to the prison, to provide backup." After Yuanmao left, Jiande smiled at Liu Heita and said, "All the overall support and signaling within the city depends on you, third brother. You can take sixty village men and scatter them throughout the city, shouting and making a scene, and act according to the situation!" Heita left with a smile. Jiande then instructed Sun Anzu, "Brother, you can lead thirty guards to meet them outside the west gate. After the prison breakers leave the city, you must cover their retreat and proceed to Gaojibo." Anzu nodded and asked, "Will you personally lead the prison break, brother?" Jianzu replied, "How could I possibly show my face?" Anzu asked anxiously, "If you won't go, who will?" Jiande laughed, "Brother, don't worry. My daughter, Xianniang, will handle the prison break. You can finally rest assured." Anzu couldn't help but laugh, "Having your niece go is absolutely foolproof, nothing could be better!" With that, he happily left.
Jiande then went into the inner room, whispered in Xianniang's ear, and explained everything. Xianniang simply nodded and smiled, her face beaming with joy, and then the matter was settled. Jiande then ordered his old servant Dou Cheng to take Xianniang to visit the prison. Jiande gave Dou Cheng some more instructions, which Dou Cheng readily agreed to. Although Dou Cheng was nearing sixty, his skills were still sharp; he could easily take down a dozen or so young men, making it impossible for them to get close. Jiande's decision to send Dou Cheng alone to accompany Xianniang was therefore quite prudent. Dou Cheng, having prepared himself, secretly concealed a nine-section soft whip
before entering the city with Xianniang. Xianniang and Dou Cheng arrived at the gates of Pingxiang County prison. Instead of visiting the prison first, Dou Cheng went to the Water King Temple, where he saw Xu Guangmao waiting. They exchanged a glance, understanding each other perfectly. Only then did Dou Cheng return to the prison gates. Having already visited the prison a few days prior to secure funds, Dou Cheng recognized the warden, Bi Da. He called out, "Brother Bi, are you inside?" Hearing the call, Bi Da came out to look. Upon seeing Dou Cheng, Bi Da said, "So it's you. What brings you here? Are you visiting your old lady? You can't go to the women's prison. The old lady is in good health, don't worry. We're paid to help people out, and we always keep that in mind." Bi Da said in one breath. Dou Cheng smiled and stepped forward, saying, "My young lady is outside and wants to see the old lady. Please let her in, brother, just for a few words." As he spoke, Dou Cheng slipped her a ten-tael envelope of silver. Bi Da hesitated for a moment, then accepted the ten-tael envelope and said, "Where is your young lady? Let me unlock the door and let her in." Dou Cheng then beckoned to Xian Niang, who slowly walked over. Bi Da opened the door and said, "Miss, please come in." Xian Niang responded and entered. Bi Da closed the door, locked it, and hid the key before saying to Xian Niang, "Miss, please be careful. Follow me inside." When Xian Niang was imprisoned, Liu Heita passed by the prison. Dou Cheng gave him a wink, and Heita understood, preparing to make his move.
Xian Niang followed Bi Da to the women's prison and called for the female guard to open the door. The female guard was Bi Da's wife, Wang Shi. When Wang Shi saw Bi Da calling for the door, she asked what it was. Bi Da pointed at Xian Niang and said, "This young lady has come to visit Old Madam Sun. Quickly open the door and serve her well." Hearing Bi Da's tone, Wang knew she had already gotten what she wanted, but instead of opening the door immediately, she stretched out her hand and said, "Give it to me!" Bi Da asked, "Give me what?" Wang replied, "Those who live by the mountain eat from the mountain, those who live by the water eat from the water." Bi Da hurriedly said, "I already have it!" Wang smiled and said, "I knew you already had it, that's why I asked you." Bi Da laughed, "Stop fooling around! Hurry up and open the door. You take it, I take it, it's just a matter of time." Xian Niang, however, was getting impatient, fearing that if the signal was given, people outside would act before she could even get inside. She immediately rummaged in her pocket, took out some loose silver, and handed it to Wang, saying, "Madam, please open the door quickly!" Wang took it, saying, "Bi Da and I were just joking, but the young lady really went to great lengths." Saying this, she opened the gate and let Xian Niang in. Bi Da gave Wang a polite look and then went outside.
Wang, leading Xian Niang, went to a small room, pushed open the door, and said, "Old Madam Sun, your young lady has arrived!" Old Madam Sun, inside, was quite surprised and suspicious, thinking to herself, "My daughter is dead, why would a young lady come to visit?" Just as she was about to ask, Xian Niang, fearing that Old Madam Sun would give herself away, hurriedly rushed inside, hugged Old Madam Sun's neck, and pretended to cry, "My poor mother!" Old Madam Sun, suddenly seeing a beautiful young girl holding her neck and calling her mother, became even more confused. Xian Niang then whispered in her ear, "I've come to save you." Fortunately, Old Madam Sun's hearing was still sharp; upon hearing Xian Niang's words, she was struck by a sudden realization and also hugged Xian Niang's head, saying, "How did my daughter come?" The maid Wang, seeing their situation, left on her own. Xian Niang then briefly explained the reason. Although Old Madam Sun was frightened, she had no choice but to bite the bullet. She didn't usually care about shackles and handcuffs, but since the key to the outer prison door was on Bi Da, Xian Niang frowned, an idea came to her, and she called over Wang Shi, saying, "Please trouble you, Madam, to call that prison guard Bi Da here. I have something to say to him." Wang Shi, unaware of the situation, thought that Xian Niang was going to spend money again, so she happily went to call Bi Da.
Xianniang then took out two daggers from her bosom, holding one in each hand and concealing them with her sleeves. When Bi Da and Wang Shi entered, Xianniang smiled and said, "I have something to discuss with the head maid and the matriarch." Bi Da and Wang Shi replied, "What is it, Miss? Please tell us." Xianniang asked, "Is it possible to take the old lady out?" Bi Da hurriedly said, "Miss, don't be childish! How could you say such a thing?" Xianniang asked, "Is it really impossible?" Wang Shi replied, "How could it be possible!" Before she finished speaking, Xianniang's two daggers had already pierced Bi Da and Wang Shi's throats, and their bodies fell to the ground, blood gushing out.
Xianniang, filled with murderous intent, searched Bi Da's bosom for the key, dragged the old lady outside, and began to unlock the door.
The guards outside the prison gate, seeing that Xianniang had unlocked the door herself, knew something was wrong. Just as they were about to question her, Dou Cheng drew his nine-section whip and struck the guards. The eight guards shouted in unison and surrounded Dou Cheng. Xianniang had already opened the prison gate and shouted, "Those who want to escape, hurry up and go!" With that, she carried Old Lady Sun away. At this moment, the signal from the Black Gate was given, and a cannon shot roared, like thunder in the sky. Shouts erupted all around the western part of the city, deafening the heavens and the earth. Xianniang and Old Lady Sun mounted their horses, with Yuan Mao bringing up the rear, and headed towards the western city. Seeing that Xianniang had left, Dou Cheng also jumped out of the encirclement. He had killed three of the eight guards; the remaining five, seeing their imposing presence, dared not pursue them, knowing they would only be throwing their lives away. They could only shout and watch them escape. The prisoners inside also seized the opportunity to rush out of their cells and escape.
By this time, Gao Shida had already stormed into Magistrate Feng's inner residence. He and thirty henchmen killed the entire Feng family and set the house on fire. They also set fire to the surrounding area of the county government office and shouted slogans. However, Shida remembered that all this trouble stemmed from Feng Chengde, who had abducted his sister and shifted the blame to Jiande. How could he let him escape? He immediately rallied his henchmen and charged towards the East Gate Street, reaching Feng Chengde's house. They stormed in, killing everyone indiscriminately, men, women, and children. But Feng Chengde wasn't there; he had gone out of town to hunt. Shida was greatly puzzled and could only vent his anger by burning down Feng Chengde's house before returning to the West City.
Meanwhile, Pingxiang County was in utter chaos, filled with wails and cries of ghosts, a constant state of unrest, and widespread fear.
Every household kept their doors shut, with only a few idlers remaining outside. Liu, the garrison commander in the Protectorate, was furious upon receiving the alarm. He immediately grabbed a long spear, mounted his horse, and, accompanied by his lieutenants Lin Xian and Zhang Fanchen, led a hundred or so soldiers out of the garrison. Cao Rucheng, who was guarding outside, saw Liu gallop out and leaped in front of the horse, slashing at Liu's mount's leg with his broadsword. Liu tried to parry, but it was too late; the horse, struck in the leg, couldn't withstand the blow and immediately fell. Liu, however, was quick; as soon as the horse hit the ground, he leaped off. Rucheng swung his broadsword again at Liu, who hastily raised his spear to parry. The soldiers shouted and surrounded Rucheng. The villagers, one by one, bravely rallied to help, and the villagers and soldiers clashed in a chaotic massacre. Ru Cheng, wielding only a broadsword, fought fiercely against Commander Liu and the two lieutenants, Lin and Zhang. After a while, outnumbered, Ru Cheng began to falter. Just as
Ru Cheng was in dire straits, he suddenly heard a voice: "Fifth Brother, don't panic!" Ru Cheng knew it was Liu Heita who had arrived, and his courage surged. Liu Heita brandished a pair of golden maces, charging into the encirclement. With a fierce roar, Zhang Fanchen was struck and killed. Lin Xian, startled, hesitated slightly, and swiftly struck Ru Cheng with his broadsword, cleaving him from shoulder to head, ending his life. Commander Liu, however, fought with increasing ferocity, his spirit soaring, and with one mace, he entangled Ru Cheng and Heita, preventing their escape. At this time, Xian Niang, Xu Yuanmao, and Dou Cheng had already left the west city. Shi Da also arrived outside the city, where Sun Anzu went to meet him. Yuan Mao asked, "Who else hasn't come out yet?" Da Tong replied, "Only Fifth Brother and Third Brother haven't come out yet!" Yuan Mao exclaimed in surprise, "Fifth Brother is in front of the Protectorate, resisting Liu Shoubei's troops. Don't let them surround him!" Upon hearing this, Xian Niang handed Old Madam Sun to An Zu and said, "Uncle, escort Great-Aunt first. I must go into the city to rescue Fifth Uncle and the others." Saying this, she rode into the city. Yuan Mao, Dou Cheng, and the others were about to stop her, but she had already gone far away. Dou Cheng also mounted a horse and rushed into the city. Yuan Mao said to Shi Da and Da Tong, "Fourth Brother and Brother Ding Gao go first. I must also go to the Protectorate." Saying this, without waiting for them to speak, he also mounted his horse and rode off.
Xian Niang arrived in the city and rode ahead straight towards the Protectorate. From afar, she could see Liu Shoubei's large spear, which he wielded with great skill. Seeing that Liu Heita and Cao Rucheng were only able to parry and had no power to retaliate, and were on the verge of collapse,
Xianniang spurred her horse forward to help. Suddenly, she cried out, "Oh dear!" She had come in a hurry and hadn't brought any weapons, only two daggers. How could she possibly fight freely like this? At this moment, she saw that Cao and Liu were in a state of utter panic, and the situation was extremely dangerous. Xianniang was very anxious. Just then, Cao Rucheng was stabbed in the shoulder by Liu Shoubei, nearly collapsing from the pain. Xianniang suddenly remembered, quickly took out a red brocade lasso from her bosom, and with a flick of her jade shoulder, the lasso flew towards Liu Shoubei's head. Xianniang shouted, "Take this!" The hook had already caught on Liu Shoubei's shoulder. Xianniang pulled hard, and Liu Shoubei dodged to the side, frantically trying to pull the lasso away. Liu Heita brought down both maces simultaneously, striking down fiercely. Liu Shoubei's brains splattered out, and he collapsed dead. Seeing their commander Liu Shoubei dead, the soldiers of the Protectorate dared not resist any longer, dropping their weapons and fleeing in disarray. Indeed: A clay pot is bound to break at the well, and a general is destined to die on the battlefield.
