Chapter 50: Ding Xin, the Imperial Guard, Takes Office, Visits a Famous Courtesan, and Causes a Scene of a Rivalry. It is said that after Wang Xi entered the Prince's mansion, he diligently ingratiated himself with the Prince, handling every matter meticulously and thoughtfully. The Prince greatly appreciated him, often saying that Wang Xi was a promising young man, no wonder Lord Chen had strongly recommended him, saying that his reliability was indeed true. Seeing his ambition, the Prince intended to promote him. There were over a hundred people in the Prince's mansion, and Wang Xi treated everyone equally, so everyone liked him, truly achieving harmony between superiors and subordinates.
One day, a clerk from the Ministry of Personnel came to see the Prince to discuss official business. He mentioned that the seawall project had been completed, and the governors of Puqing and Anlan had recommended dozens of officials who had contributed, making it a major recommendation case. This memorial had been ordered to be submitted to the Ministry for discussion the previous day. Upon hearing this, the lord immediately thought of Wang Xi. Without informing Wang Xi, he sent Wang Xi's name to the ministry, placing it under the maritime engineering case file, changing his name to Qi Rong, and specifically requesting the position of Qianzong (a military rank) in the grain transport corps. Which official in the ministry would dare not flatter the prince? Upon seeing the document, without inquiring about the man's background, they assumed he was a confidant of the prince and added phrases like "particularly dedicated to the work" to Wang Qi Rong's name. The document was submitted, and within a few days, an imperial edict arrived, granting the governor's request. Wang Xi, without exerting any effort and not even knowing what the seawall looked like, received the title of Qianzong. The ministry immediately sent a messenger to the prince, who then summoned Wang Xi and told him about the recommendation.
Wang Xi was overjoyed and deeply grateful to the prince, immediately knelt down and kowtowed several times. The prince laughed, "Now that you are an official appointed by the court, I dare not employ you. You should return to your post. You have not failed the recommendation of Chen Renren to come here. Although the official position is small, the responsibility is heavy. If you obtain a substantive post within one or two years, you must serve with sincerity and ability." Wang Xi repeatedly agreed. After leaving, his servants, having received the news, came to congratulate him. Wang Xi prepared several feasts and invited his companions to drink and celebrate for a day. He then purchased several sets of official robes and hats, put them on, first thanked the prince, and then went to the Ministry to register his name and submit his resume, preparing for an audience. A day later, after the audience, he bid farewell to the prince and prepared to depart. The prince gave him some more instructions in person. The next morning, he hired a mule cart and set off. At this time, Wang Xi also had two servants by his side, hurrying along the way.
He arrived in Nanjing in a few days, found a place to stay, and prepared a petition to visit Xiao Ru. However, Xiao Ru was away and he did not get to see him. The next morning, he came to serve again. Just then, Shuangfu was about to go and talk to him, so he quickly took his note and went upstairs to inform Xiaoru. He then led Wang Xi through the garden gate, winding his way to the Red Fragrance Courtyard. Shuangfu rushed inside to report, where Xiaoru was sitting opposite Boqing. Wang Xi entered, kowtowed three times, rose to greet him, and then turned to greet Boqing. Xiaoru saw that Wang Xi was dressed in the uniform of a centurion, and his appearance was even more imposing than before, befitting a minor military officer. Xiaoru then bowed slightly and instructed Shuangfu to help him up, and ordered a seat to be prepared for him. Wang Xi repeatedly refused, but Boqing laughed, "Logically, you don't have a seat, but now you are an official, and even a centurion has a seat, so you should sit down so we can talk." Wang Xi greeted him again and then sat down. Xiaoru inquired in detail about the situation in the capital, and Wang Xi understood everything. Xiao Ru nodded and told him to rest outside, "Wait a moment, I still have something to ask you." Wang Xi stood up, responded, and withdrew. He then asked Shuang Fu to take him inside to pay his respects to Madam Fang and the other ladies. He also went to Wang Lan, Han Cha, and other places. Afterward, Shuang Fu invited him to Lanyu Pavilion. After having tea served, Shuangfu said, "Brother Wang, congratulations on achieving your official rank! You'll be a high-ranking official soon. We are truly far behind and feel deeply ashamed. But please, we were fortunate to be together for several years, and your kindness to us was unparalleled. Now that you've entered the officialdom, please don't forget us. If you can offer any guidance, I would gladly serve you." Wang Xi laughed, "You're teasing me again, brother. I was merely recommended to the Prince's residence by my master's grace, and I was also deeply grateful for the Prince's great favor in granting me this small official rank. Outsiders may see it as an honor, but I am constantly afraid that my abilities are insufficient and I will fail my master and the Prince's kindness. As for your reluctance to leave, if I were willing, would I fear my master's disapproval? And what about our old friends?" "I never forget you, and you especially so, my brother. If, by your good fortune, I could fill this vacancy, it would be an honor for the host. I thought of inviting a group of old friends to stay for a year or two, so we could all get to know each other better. But what you just said might put me in an awkward position, especially since you, my brother, said it, which would be even more deserving of punishment. You said I treat you differently from strangers, don't you know my heart? I am not the kind of person who forgets the old." Shuangfu laughed and said, "Thank you, thank you, it shows that you still care about me. I hope you can fill the vacancy soon. Even if you don't invite us, we will definitely make a scene at your office. Are you afraid that you will turn your back on us and kick us out?" As the two were talking, Xiaoru offered another table of food and wine. Wang Xi stood up and asked someone to go up and thank him on his behalf. Shuangfu asked the table and chairs to be set out, and Wang Xi sat down. Shuangfu sat opposite him, and his two young servants served wine and food at the table. Shuangfu personally poured a cup of wine for Wang Xi, saying, "Brother, please drink this cup. May you be promoted quickly and achieve great success." Wang Xi bowed, accepted the cup, and drank it down in one gulp, saying, "Thank you for your kind words, brother." Shuangfu poured another cup of wine, put down the pot, and said, "Please drink this cup again. I have something to say. This morning I intended to visit your residence, but my father instructed me to discuss something with you. Fortunately, your elder brother came, saving me the trouble of going back and forth. Now that your elder brother has obtained his official position, it's time for him to arrange a marriage. Without a wife, it would be a joke if my father couldn't go to his post! Miss Zhu will accompany you to the river..." A maid named Qiuxia came to the manor; she's quite pretty, as your elder brother has seen before, and now she's blossomed into a beauty. The other day, Madam remembered you were still unmarried and discussed with Miss Zhu the possibility of giving Qiuxia to you. Miss Zhu was willing, but worried that now that you're an official, you might not want a maid from the Jiang household. She said that once you get a position, a high-ranking family will naturally come to propose marriage. She wanted to discuss this with you in person, fearing you wouldn't be able to refuse. Miss Zhu also said that this matter couldn't be forced; it required mutual consent, so it was best to clarify things. Therefore, Madam asked me... "Let me ask you this in private, is it feasible or not? No one else knows. If it turns out to be unsuccessful, that's fine, but I'm afraid Qiuxia will lose face. Think about this carefully, whether it's feasible or not, don't worry about the master and mistress's reputation, just tell me the truth so I can clear up the mess for the mistress." Wang Xi said, "Oh dear, brother, what are you saying? How can you say that I've become arrogant after getting an official position? I didn't say that this small title of mine was a favor from the master, and even my body belongs to the master. Besides, the master gave me a maid, even if I'm not allowed to marry for life, I wouldn't dare to have a dream." "I have a grudge. My master's kindness is greater than that of my own parents. Besides, my master has given me a maid, what a great honor! How could I dare to say no? Unless I'm blinded by greed and can't distinguish right from wrong. Good brother, please tell Master and Madam that Wang Xi is very willing, but I'm afraid it would tarnish Miss Qiu Xia's reputation. Also, please ask Madam how to arrange the betrothal and what ceremony to use. Wang Xi will follow your instructions. Good brother, please be sure to speak earnestly for me." Shuangfu clapped his hands and said, "Brother, you are truly straightforward. Unlike people nowadays who, after receiving a benefit, put on a show of hypocrisy and deliberately create obstacles. You haven't changed your old ways. Just this one thing shows that you haven't forgotten us." Wang Xi laughed and said, "Just now, I doubted that I was just talking nonsense, but now I can believe you." Shuangfu added, "Since you are willing to take Qiu Xia, I have thought of a foolproof plan for you." I'm not afraid of your elder brother's disapproval, but Qiuxia is, after all, of humble origins. If we wait until after the marriage to come and fetch her, or send her to the groom's place, people might see through our relationship, which would be inconvenient. It would be better to rent a house in Nanjing for the wedding, and then bring the family to Qingjiang to return to the groom's place. Wouldn't that be the best of both worlds? Even if you, elder brother, don't immediately return to the groom's place after coming from the capital, but come to Nanjing first to report to your master, you'll be making preparations beforehand. Firstly, to avoid offending the master, and secondly, to ensure everything is arranged properly so that no one else can leak the news. This is a thoughtful consideration. In my humble opinion, people who have worked hard to rise through the ranks have ambition. As the saying goes, "A hero's origins are not everything." People in the world today are so critical and narrow-minded, always wanting to know someone's background. If it's good, they praise it to the skies, making it perfect; if there's even a slight flaw, everyone starts to criticize and twist it tenfold, even though it has nothing to do with the person. Wang Xi nodded and said, "Brother, your insight is truly remarkable, and you have a keen understanding of current affairs. I am deeply grateful for your excellent planning on my behalf. However, you must not speak like this in front of Master and Madam, lest you anger them. They might say that he thinks he has achieved fame and is afraid of marrying a maid from the Jiang family, which would be beneath him and cause all these troubles. Brother, please ask Madam for her instructions before making any further plans." Shuangfu said, "I understand. I have my own way of doing things. Don't worry, I will not let Madam blame you." The two drank a few more cups of wine before ordering dinner. After the meal, they sat down separately. Wang Xi and Shuangfu went inside to thank him for the reward, then took their leave. After greeting everyone in the gatehouse for a while, they returned to their lodgings with their entourage.
Shuangfu, having seen Wang Xi off, came up to Xiaoru and Madam Fang, relaying Wang Xi's promise. Madam Fang, hearing of Wang Xi's immediate and unequivocal acceptance, was delighted, saying, "It was Madam Jiang who was overthinking it; I told you that boy wouldn't disobey." Shuangfu then seized the opportunity to ask Madam Fang how to persuade him, explaining that Wang Xi wanted to marry here, fearing that going to Qingjiang would be a pointless trip. Xiaoru said to Madam Fang, "That's fine. It's better to marry him here, avoiding the outsiders knowing he married a maid from the Jiang family, which would make the officers in the same camp laugh at him. You can discuss it with Ziqian's wife and just agree to it. Early or late, it's all the same; it will save both of us some expenses." Madam Fang agreed and immediately sent Hongwen to invite Madam Jiang over. Xiaoru got up and left with Shuangfu.
After a short while, Qiongzhen arrived. Madam Fang quickly stood up to offer her a seat and then told Hongwen and Qiuxia to sit over there. "I have important things to say to Madam Jiang. Please come again later." The two agreed and left. Madam Fang then told Qiongzhen about Wang Xi's agreement, adding, "Wang Xi intends to marry her in Nanjing and take her to Qingjiang. That's why he asked you to come and discuss it, hoping you'll be considerate." Qiongzhen replied, "What's there to discuss? Qiuxia is his family member; she can go with him to get married. Why should I interfere? Qiuxia isn't my own daughter. Your sister can agree to Wang Xi's arrangement, and I'm happy to agree to Qiuxia's as well. What good will it do us if people find out they're a couple—one a maid, the other a servant? Besides, Wang Xi has just arrived at the grain transport post. It wouldn't make sense for him to ask for leave specifically for a wedding. If we send the bride here, who will escort Qiuxia? Sending only a few maids and servants will clearly reveal their marital status. It's better to marry her here." "Alright." Madam Fang said, "Since you are so considerate, tomorrow I will send someone to inform Wang Xi to choose a date for the wedding. I also think that if we rent a house outside, it will take until the month is over before they can leave, which will be quite inconvenient. I intend to borrow a house in the garden for the wedding, and Qiuxia can be helped from here to the garden. Wang Xi can then come here to marry her off, and the couple can set off in three to five days. However, we are afraid that we will not be able to prepare in time, so we need to choose an auspicious date after the month is over. Since Qiuxia has served you for a long time and has grown up in your presence, you should also prepare some things for her." Qiongzhen said, "There is nothing to prepare. I have many clothes that I no longer wear. Two sets each season are enough for her. However, all jewelry and other necessities..." "A little more needs to be added.
Fortunately, I've given Qiuxia plenty of hairpins and earrings over the years, so the amount needed is limited. It should be enough to replace them in three to five days. But Qiuxia, that hussy, is marrying Wang Xi. She's leaving my place as a maid and becoming the wife of a military commander—a meteoric rise. She benefits, while I have to pay her dowry. It's really not worth it." Madam Fang laughed, "How can you say that? She's someone raised by parents, serving you no matter how much you scold or beat her, only to receive a small compensation from her master. It's not like Qiuxia is a proper marriage to Wang Xi. Even if you gave her a son, you couldn't just send him away empty-handed. Who can you complain to now? If it's not your fault, should it be mine?" "Go on? Didn't you see that Jinzheng married Liu Wuguan the other day? Sister Liyun also gave a considerable sum, and she didn't complain. When Hongwen gets married in the future, I will also have to give her a sum. It can be seen that every family has its own affairs, and you are not the only one suffering. However, Qiuxia is a lucky girl. Although Wang Xi is a low-ranking official, she is still a noblewoman. Because of this, you should give her a more generous sum than Jinzheng. Among the maids, Qiuxia is the most outstanding." Qiongzhen said, "Even if Qiuxia is lucky, how can she compare to your second mistress?" Madam Fang said, "That's far from the truth! Qiuxia's family background is far inferior to my second mistress's. Otherwise, no one would have taken her in as an adopted daughter, and my master would not have agreed to this marriage on behalf of my second master." Qiongzhen listened and nodded in agreement.
Madam Fang then ordered Hongwen to call Shuangfu in and tell him to inform Wang Xi to quickly choose an auspicious day for the betrothal and marriage. "Send someone to clean up the abandoned rooms at Conggui Villa and use them as Qiuxia's new house." Qiongzhen also instructed Shuangfu to purchase everything needed for the new house, saying, "Once you've bought everything, come to me to collect the price." Shuangfu agreed and sent people to Conggui Villa to clean and renovate, moving all the items that Wuguan had used and used, which hadn't been taken away, to Jinzheng's room. He also informed Wang Xi, who invited Shuangfu to the official residence to consult the almanac and choose the 28th of this month as the auspicious date for the betrothal ceremony, the 3rd of the eighth month. As for the betrothal items, Wang Xi naturally had people handle them separately, so there's no need to go into details.
Shuangfu then informed Madam Mingfang of the auspicious date for the betrothal ceremony and the marriage. He also purchased all the necessary items for the new house, prepared a list, and sent it to Qiongzhen, who then received the money. He then had people deliver each item to the garden one by one and personally oversaw the arrangements. Everything was ready, awaiting only the auspicious date.
Meanwhile, Qiongzhen, Suxin, and the others, having spent the day preparing to return home, were leaving. Cheng Wanrong and Xiaofeng had already gone back the previous day. Qiongzhen left Qiuxia with Madam Fang, to return on the auspicious third day of the month. Upon returning to the mansion, she informed Old Madam Jiang of Qiuxia's words. In her own room, she opened her chests and found over ten sets of clothes for all four seasons, all brand new, some only worn once or twice. She had them packed into a large bundle and sent to Madam Fang. She also selected an older maid named Qiuhong from among the maids to serve her personally, filling the gap left by Qiuxia.
At this time, Qiuxia already knew he was betrothed to Wang Xi. He had met Wang Xi before and heard that he had now become an official, and he was overjoyed, deeply grateful for Qiongzhen's kindness. However, he was embarrassed to be seen outside, fearing that Hongwen and the others would come to ridicule him, so he hid in Madam Fang's room all day. Unfortunately, Hongwen and the others overheard this and were both envious and jealous of him. Once everyone was in place, and as soon as Madam Fang was out of the room, they came to congratulate Qiuxia. Their conversation was a mix of sarcasm and mockery, leaving Qiuxia unsure whether to dodge or respond. She could only lower her head, turn to the wall, and let them chatter.
Hongwen, seeing this, sneered, "Oh, so she's already putting on this rich young lady act. In a few days, she'll be the wife of a high-ranking officer. Truly, a phoenix has risen from our bunch of lowly chickens. It'll be a respectable thing for us to talk about in the future." Qiuxia blushed deeply, wanting to retort, but too ashamed to speak, she could only curse silently. Several maids, who were close to Qiuxia, seeing her like this, couldn't bear to say anything more and instead stopped Hongwen, saying, "Sister Hong, there's no need to say anything more. Why make people uncomfortable?" Just as they were about to exchange words, Madam Fang returned to her room, and the group dispersed. Therefore, Qiuxia dared not stay alone in the room, fearing that Hongwen and the others would still come to tease her. She had no choice but to stay close to Miss Saizhen, never leaving her side, to avoid the noise from Hongwen and the others.
On the 28th, Wang Xi also sent several messengers to deliver the betrothal gifts, which were all accepted by Madam Fang. She also prepared a return gift and rewarded the messengers. On the first day of the month, Qiongzhen and Xiaolian were brought to the new house, and Suxin and Wanrong were also invited to come and see the excitement. In the afternoon, Shuangfu returned to the new house, where everything was ready. Madam Fang invited the ladies to go and see it. Indeed, the new house was very tidy, with a short window in the back room covered with red gauze. The bed curtains and chests were all exquisite. Although it was not comparable to that of a wealthy family, it was more than enough for a middle-class family. The ladies sat for a while and then returned to the east house. Qiongzhen assigned two more maids to serve Qiuxia, and Wang Xi also bought a head maid, who was sent over on the day of the betrothal.
On the morning of the third day, the ladies rose and dressed, then went together to Madam Fang's room. They saw Qiu Xia's face was adorned with makeup, and she had changed into the attire of a sixth-rank official, a phoenix coronet, embroidered robe, jade belt, and python skirt—she looked every bit the part of a noblewoman. At the auspicious hour, she was escorted through the east side gate to the garden, a red carpet laid out along the way, with a red umbrella over the newlyweds' heads. The ladies followed her to the bridal chamber, waiting to witness the groom's arrival.
Lanterns and decorations were hung in various places within the garden, including the Lanyu Pavilion. Xiao Ru had already asked Mei Xian and Wu Guan to receive the bride and groom. Jin Liu and her companion, also dressed impeccably, waited in the Lanyu Pavilion. Suddenly, they heard the sound of drums and music outside, and a servant came up to report, "The groom has arrived!" Mei Xian and Wu Guan quickly rose and descended the steps to greet him. Wang Xi alighted from his sedan chair inside the garden gate, led by four servants carrying red lanterns, followed by two rows of musicians playing various instruments. Wang Xi, dressed in court robes and hat, draped in a long red and green silk shawl, and adorned with two gold-embroidered palace flowers in his hair, approached with a dignified air. Mei Xian and Wu Guan immediately went to greet him, exchanging bows and inviting him to the upper floor to take his seat. Servants served tea, and the music and drumming ceased. Xiao Ru and the others all stepped aside, fearing that Wang Xi would be too constrained by etiquette to rise and sit.
Jin and Liu accompanied Wang Xi through all the grand ceremonies. The best man came forward to invite the groom to pay homage to Heaven and Earth. Jin and Liu both stood up, and music played again below the steps. The newlyweds were brought out, and paper horses representing Heaven and Earth were set up in the center. A red carpet was laid out, and they kowtowed to the gods and ancestors. The couple then bowed four times to each other before inviting Xiao Ru and the other ladies to receive their bows. The others declined repeatedly, but Wang Xi bowed to them and then entered the bridal chamber to sit on the bed and share the nuptial cup. At this time, all the ladies also withdrew. After the ceremony, Wang Xi went outside again and saw that a banquet had been prepared in the Yu Pavilion, with Jin and Liu still accompanying him. Two days ago, Wang Xi had asked Shuang Fu to arrange more than ten tables of food. On this day, four tables were sent to the eastern residence, and the rest of the men, women, and servants also received wedding food. Xiao Ru and the others had prepared various boots, hats, robes, and other items to give to Wang Xi; Madam Fang and the others also gave Qiu Xia many dowry items. Although the emperor could not come in person, he sent gifts. No need to elaborate.
It was nearly midnight, and the banquet outside had ended. Mei Xian and Wu Guan ordered four servants to hold colorful glass lanterns, illuminating the way for the groom and bride, who were then led to the bridal chamber. They sat for a while before taking their leave. The maids and servants came to help the newlyweds settle into bed. Wang Xi and Qiu Xia, having already met each other, were still deeply in love, spending the night in passion and making vows of eternal love. The next morning, the couple rose, washed, and dressed. Wang Xi went outside to thank Xiao Ru and the others, while Qiu Xia also paid her respects to Madam Fang and her mistress. A feast was prepared to entertain the couple.
Three days later, Wang Xi came to inform Xiao Ru that he was going to Qingjiang to return to his post. Xiao Ru said, "You should go sooner. Now, Lord Wang's father-in-law, Lord Hong, is the Grand Canal Transport Commissioner. I spoke with Lord Wang yesterday, asking him to bestow an official title and a letter of recommendation for you to take to serve him. Lord Hong will surely promote you." He then took a letter from the bookshelf and handed it to Wang Xi. Wang Xi hurriedly accepted it, greeted him, and then turned to thank Wang Lan before withdrawing. Back in his room, he and Qiu Xia agreed to depart on the auspicious day of the ninth, and naturally, there were many preparations.
On the evening of the eighth, Xiao Ru and his men held a farewell banquet for Wang Xi, with Mei Xian and Wu Guan still in attendance. Qiong Zhen also saw him off with Qiu Xia. Qiu Xia recalled the deep bond between master and servant over the past ten years. Although she herself had achieved good things, she could not forget the kindness of her former master, and she couldn't help but shed tears. Qiongzhen, however, offered much comfort, saying, "You've been by my side for over ten years, growing up with me since childhood. I've treated you well, and I've done my best for you. My only worry is your future. It's fortunate that Mrs. Chen acted as matchmaker, arranging your marriage to Wang Xi. He's an official, and you've finally achieved something, which makes me very happy. As long as you and your husband are harmonious, have children, and Wang Xi gets a real position, you'll be content. You don't need to worry about me all the time; you have no parents, and this place is your family home. After you and your husband arrive in Qingjiang, I'll send someone to fetch you after half a year." The other ladies also chimed in with their advice, and Qiuxia finally stopped crying, obediently accepting their command. After a while, the banquet ended, and everyone returned to their quarters. The couple couldn't sleep, spending the entire night checking on odds and ends until sunrise. Outside, sedan chairs and horses were prepared. Wang Xi and Qiuxia put on their overcoats, bowed to Xiaoru and the other ladies, and gave each of them some further instructions. Wang Xi took his leave and went to the gatehouse to greet Shuangfu and the others for a while before mounting his horse. Qiuxia in the garden also got into a sedan chair. The women and maids, some in carriages and others in sedan chairs, all carrying luggage and other belongings, left the city. They disembarked at the dock, hoisted the sails, and headed straight for Qingjiang. Here, Qiongzhen, seeing that Qiuxia had left, also felt sad. Because the Autumn Festival was approaching, she returned to her residence the next day with Suxin, Wanrong, and others.
As for Wang Xi and his wife, they had been on the road for more than a day, and finally arrived at Qingjiang. They first sent people ashore to find a mansion, brought Qiuxia into the new house, and busied themselves settling her in. After several days, they finally had some free time and made preparations to return to their post. After everything was settled outside, they went to report to the Grand Canal Commander. After exchanging greetings at the court, they exchanged a few words and presented Wang Lan's letter of recommendation. Hong Dingcai, seeing that it was his son-in-law's handwriting, quickly unfolded it and read that it was nothing more than a sincere request to promote Wang Qirong. Wang Lan did not deceive her father-in-law and recounted Wang Xi's background from the beginning. After reading it, Hong Dingcai nodded and said, "I understand. It's up to fate." Wang Xi agreed to leave and from then on, he waited to be appointed as a servant in the grain transport corps. Several banquets were prepared, and all his colleagues were invited.
Zheng Lin was still the commander of the grain transport corps. He knew that Wang Xi was Chen Xiaoru's confidant and took better care of him than others. Wang Xi was also good at flattery and tried his best to win over everyone. In less than two months, all his colleagues were on good terms with him. Hong Dingcai also liked his competence and, with his son-in-law's request, he wanted to promote him. It seemed that Wang Xi's time had come. The garrison commander of Yangzhou died in office, leaving a vacancy. When the matter was reported, Hong Dingcai submitted a memorial and appointed Qianzong Wang Qirong to temporarily take over the duties.
Wang Xi was overjoyed to receive the official appointment. He hurriedly went to pay his respects to the Grand Canal Commander, gave his leave, and then packed his belongings with his family to take up his post in Yangzhou. This time, the situation was quite different from when he arrived. Several official seats were set up at the dock, and officials with Yangzhou Guard badges and umbrellas were lined up at the bow of the ship. A tall yellow flag bearing the inscription "Yangzhou Guard Main Hall" was displayed on the mast. Two days before his departure, his colleagues and officials saw him off. At dawn that day, Wang Xi and his wife arrived at the riverbank in a large sedan chair carried by four men, with attendants in front and behind them. They disembarked and immediately set off with the sounding of gongs, making a very impressive journey.
After four days, they arrived in Yangzhou. Various clerks and servants from the Guard's office came to greet them. The family of the former Guard official had already returned home with his coffin before the new official arrived. The yamen was empty, so Wang Xi did not set up a separate residence. An auspicious day was chosen for him to receive his official seal, and Qiu Xia also entered the yamen that day. All the paperwork involved was merely a matter of offering incense and paying respects to the officials, both civil and military, in the city, and presenting documents to the bannermen and soldiers. Although the garrison commander was a minor official, the yamen was well-organized. Moreover, being a military officer doing clerical work, there was no drill or exercise involved; aside from transporting grain, the job was quite leisurely and comfortable. The annual revenue was quite substantial. Wang Xizhen never dreamed of such a day and was overjoyed. He immediately drafted a report and sent it to Xiaoru. However, considering that the position of caretaker could not last long, and although Lord Hong was in charge, it was still against regulations, he raised funds and sent them to the Ministry to donate for a promotion to garrison commander, which would allow him to act as an acting clerk. But that's a story for later, so let's leave it at that.
Let's focus on the previous official who hired a clerk to manage the yamen's affairs. The two got along extremely well, and the clerk was very resourceful, becoming the previous official's right-hand man. This man's name was Jia Shi, courtesy name Zicheng, a student from Ganquan County School, around thirty years old, with a hawk-like face and beady eyes, bold and cunning. Outsiders gave him a nickname, changing Jia Zicheng to "False Sincerity." This was because he outwardly appeared honest and meticulous in all matters, but in reality, he was greedy and avaricious, and habitually lobbied the authorities to monopolize lawsuits. Everyone in the city feared him, and those studying there despised him and avoided associating with him.
A former guard officer, hearing of his reputation and fearing he would cause trouble, decided it would be better to bring him into his staff for peace of mind, and thus personally invited him to be a guest of honor. Jia Zicheng was worried that no one would be interested in him lately, and he had no opportunities to make a living. Taking advantage of the official's influence, he went out to swindle and deceive, and thus accepted his former employer's offer. He ostensibly arranged things for his employer, but secretly he enriched himself more than double. Over the years, although not extremely wealthy, he was comfortably well-off. He had no other vices except for lust, which he
indulged in to the extreme. In those brothels, everyone knew the name "False Sincerity." He had a close friend named Zhu Pi, courtesy name Xizhen, originally from Zhejiang, who had lived in Yangzhou for many years and had purchased a position as a transport official in the Lianghuai Salt Transport Bureau. This man was treacherous and cunning. Bai Chu and Jia Zicheng hit it off immediately, and both were fond of brothels. Therefore, Jia and Zhu became inseparable, like glue.
Wang Xi, newly appointed as a guard officer, was at a loss. Fortunately, his predecessor had a trusted advisor there, a skilled one, who could be consulted for advice and action. Jia Zicheng, always eloquent and charming, spoke with such eloquence that even the most stubborn man nodded in agreement. Upon meeting him, Wang Xi immediately considered him a confidant, thinking, "No wonder my predecessor used him for so many years; this man must have some talent." Seeing that the new official was already under his spell and bewitched, Jia Zicheng became ten times bolder, acting recklessly.
One morning, Jia Zicheng sat in his room, puzzled. It was a quiet time of year, with no official business to attend to. Just as he was about to go out, his personal servant came to report, "Master Zhu is here." Jia Zicheng quickly rose and invited him in. Zhu Pi swaggered in, smiling, "Brother Zicheng, it's been a long time! What have you been so busy with these past few days that you haven't even had a chance to visit me?" As they spoke, they returned to their seats. Zhu Pi continued, "I've wanted to visit you for a long time, and invited you out for a stroll. But since you've just arrived at your new residence, and I don't know your character, I haven't dared to make a presumptuous visit." Jia Zicheng immediately waved his hand and whispered, "Don't mention it. It's truly my good fortune that we're so close, I can speak frankly. This new official is a novice, completely clueless." As he spoke, he chuckled and drew a circle on the table with his two thumbs, saying, "You knew it all along. I haven't gone out these past few days unless it's out of goodwill, so I have to be quite attentive to my new employer. Today I'm just so bored and impatient..." "I intended to visit your residence after lunch, but I didn't expect you, Master Xi, to grace us with your presence beforehand. Excellent, excellent! Have lunch here, and we can stroll around the streets together to relieve our boredom." Ling Pi, upon hearing this, cupped his hands and said, "Congratulations, congratulations! It seems your good fortune still has a few years ahead of you! Not to flatter you, but you've managed to subdue even the three-headed, six-armed official who accompanied him; you're sure to get along well with him, let alone a newly appointed one." With that, the two clapped and laughed, chatting and laughing until the meal was served, and they ate facing each other. Jia Zicheng called over a servant and said, "If the master asks me, just say that the clerk and Master Zhu went out to visit a friend and will be back soon." He then rose and invited Zhu Pi to leave the yamen together.
Zhu Pi said, "Where shall we go for a stroll?" Jia Zicheng replied, "Other places are always boring. Let's go to the Zhang family and see the Rujin sisters." Zhu Pi said, "That's nice, but I'm really afraid of their airs, the way they look down on people. Since you insist, I'll have to go with you." Jia Zicheng laughed, "Don't try to fool me. If you're afraid of going to their house, why do you want to befriend Ruyu? You're just saying one thing and meaning another. I don't believe you." Zhu Pi laughed and said, "Let's go, let's go, stop nagging." The two walked through the alleys and soon arrived at the Zhang family's gate.
It turned out that a new courtesan had recently arrived in Yangzhou, living in Liuxiang inside Tianning Gate. She was called Zhang Sanbao's family, from Nanjing, and had two sisters, the elder named Rujin and the younger named Ruyu. They were quite famous. Ru Jin's appearance was even more beautiful than Yu's. Jia Zicheng had long harbored feelings for Ru Jin, but although Ru Jin feared Zicheng's power and influence, she refused to befriend him, only feigning intimacy on the surface. Jia Zicheng knew this but pretended not to, resentfully determined to take advantage of her. Zhu Pi, seeing that Ru Jin had already gained Zicheng's favor, had to consider another option: befriending Ru Yu, though he didn't explicitly state this.
A short while later, the Zhang family saw Jia and Zhu enter and hurriedly informed them, while simultaneously inviting them to sit in the inner room. Ru Jin and Ru Yu came out to greet them. Ru Jin smiled and said, "Good! Where have you been all this time? I thought you were angry with me. You've come today?" Jia Zicheng, seeing Ru Jin, beamed and said, "My darling, how could I bear to be angry with you, unless you were angry with me? Even if you were angry with me, I would still come." With that, everyone stepped into Ru Jin's room and sat down, and a maid brought tea. Had Jia Zicheng told Ru Jin that he was about to take up his new post and couldn't come out? Ruyu said, "Master Jia is too busy with the new official's arrival. Why isn't Master Zhu here either? What's holding him back? Tell us quickly!" Zhu Pi laughed, "Listen to your sharp tongues! People have come all this way to see you sisters, and upon entering, they don't even greet you properly, just launch into a barrage of sarcastic remarks. I both hate and love them. Anyway, we've come today, and even if we've done something wrong, we've personally come to apologize. Anyone who mentions this again will be punished with a stomachache. Quickly tell your kitchen to prepare a feast; it's my treat to Master Jia." Jia Zicheng said, "What are you saying? Why am I bothering you? Fine, I'll trouble you today, but I'll prepare a feast for you tomorrow." Upon hearing this, Rujin immediately ordered someone to instruct the cook to prepare a top-quality meal and wine, and to put it on Master Zhu's tab. They then had lamps placed on the bed, and Jia and Zhu lay down opposite each other, with Rujin and Ruyu sitting beside them.
Zhu Pi immediately noticed two pale white dishes on the plate; one contained dripping green Suzhou sandalwood seeds, and the other contained bright red Fuzhou tangerines. The red and green contrasted beautifully against the snow-white dishes. Beside the plate was a large, flesh-colored dish filled with nothing more than hazelnuts, pine nuts, chestnuts, pears, and dates. Zhu Pi picked up a sandalwood seed, put it in his mouth, and said, "Although I don't eat olives like country folk, I still want to try this to savor the taste." As he spoke, he glanced at Ruyu with a squinting smile. Ruyu blushed, pinched Zhu Pi's leg, and laughed, scolding, "Stop spewing nonsense! I don't care if you savor the taste or not, just don't make me say anything unpleasant!" She then picked up a torreya nut from the red dish and slapped it at Zhu Pi's face, saying, "You don't need to eat olives to savor the taste, I'll give you a torreya nut to eat." Jia Zicheng, who was taking a puff of his pipe, heard Ruyu and Zhu Pi laughing and couldn't help but chuckle, almost choking on his own tears. He put down his pipe and said, "Old Master Xi doesn't need to savor the taste, and Ruyu doesn't need to give him a torreya nut. I'd like a pitless date to eat." Saying this, he picked up a date and ate it, causing Zhu Pi and the Rujin sisters to burst into laughter. Rujin laughed, "Eat the pitless date if you want, but be careful not to swallow it whole, or the pit will get stuck in your throat." This made everyone laugh again, and Jia Zicheng let Zhu Pi take a few more puffs of his pipe.
The banquet was ready and set out inside the room. The sun had already set outside, and candles were lit everywhere. Rujin offered the seat of honor to Zicheng, with Zhu Pi sitting opposite him, while she and her sister Ruyu sat on the east and west sides respectively. After several rounds of drinks, Zicheng asked Rujin to sing a short song. Rujin couldn't refuse, so she took out her lute and asked Ruyu to play the moon lute. The two sisters sang a duet. Jia and Zhu applauded, and Zicheng poured two cups of hot wine to congratulate them on their behalf.
Just as they were laughing and chatting, someone peeked out from behind the curtain. Rujin, quick-witted, had already spotted him and hurried to the door, asking, "What is it?" The person replied, "Master Xu Chunfang from the manor has arrived, and he has invited several friends. He says he's hosting a banquet here and would like to invite you, young lady, to come and talk." Rujin said, "I understand," and returned to her seat. Although the man spoke softly, Zhu Pi overheard everything. He smiled at Ru Jin and said, "Your sweetheart is here, calling you over. I'll plead with Master Jia on your behalf to let you go. Otherwise, offending her won't be a joke. Besides, even though you're sitting here, your heart is already with her, so it's pointless. Why should we provoke your anger? You're so tactless." This Xu Chunfang, a native of Jiangxi, was currently a secretary in Yangzhou Prefecture. He was very wealthy and young. Ru Jin had long desired to be with him, and Xu Chunfang also had feelings for Ru Jin, but neither had spoken openly. Ru Jin, hearing that Xu Chunfang had come, was eager to go immediately, but because she was drinking with Jia and Zhu, she couldn't leave. Just as he was about to think of a way to brush them off, Zhu Pi unexpectedly saw through his words and hit a nerve. He blushed, and taking advantage of Zhu Pi's words, stood up and said, "I'll leave if I want to, who can stop me? Do you expect me to put up with this? I wasn't going, but since you say the person coming is my lover, I'll go, and then I'll settle accounts with you." Having said this, he excused himself, turned, and left the room. Turning back to Ruyu, he said, "Don't do me a favor and let the Zhu family go. I still need to question them about what they mean by 'lover' or 'not lover'." He then said to Jia Zicheng, "Master Jia, please sit patiently, I have something to say to you." Without looking back, he left.
Zhu Pi sneered, "That hussy Ru Jin is truly despicable, always trying to take advantage of others. She really wanted to leave, but I had to say something to her so she could leave on her own." Ru Yujin chimed in, "Sister is coming soon. Even if she can leave you, she can't leave Master Jia. The Xu family is coming, so it's not good to not go. Fortunately, our banquet hasn't ended yet, and it's still early, so why not stay a little longer?" As she spoke, she picked up the wine pot and poured wine for Jia and Zhu, saying, "Let's have a few rounds of drinks and have a little game." Jia Zicheng saw Ru Jin leave without paying any attention and felt a little disappointed, but he couldn't bring himself to say it. Clearly, he was being sarcastic towards the Xu family, but Ruyu had managed to persuade him to drink, so he could only force a smile and say, "Uncle Xi, why bother? Does the absence of Rujin mean we can't drink? Besides, with Ruyu here, it's the same. As long as you're not lonely, that's fine. If Rujin comes again in a little while, we won't let him join the table and will make him drink three large cups as punishment, how about that?" Ruyu said, "Master Jia is absolutely right. I'll drink one large cup first. You all have to follow me, so don't show any favoritism." Seeing that Jia Zicheng was speechless, Zhu Pi didn't dare to speak again, so he said, "Of course we'll drink. Would we cheat you? Brother Zicheng, please." After a few more rounds of drinks, Ruyu tried his best to find something to say to make them laugh.
But Ru Jin had vanished without a trace. Jia Zicheng, growing impatient, suddenly heard shouts and fist-fighting among the crowd. He also heard the sound of strings and zithers; it was Ru Jin singing. His anger flared, and unable to contain himself, he sneered, putting down his wine cup without drinking. Zhu Pi, having also heard this and seeing Zicheng's behavior, thought, "He was just being a good guy, pretending to be magnanimous. Now he's probably getting impatient too. I'll just provoke him a bit and see how he reacts." So he smiled and said, "Brother Zicheng, do you hear that wonderful music over there? Your friend's singing seems even better than what he sang at our banquet. Perhaps it's because I'm not a music connoisseur and am just being paranoid." Ru Yu, hearing this, quickly tried to change the subject, but seeing Jia Zicheng's angry expression, he pushed aside his wine cup, stood up, and said with a half-smile, "Old Master, you're a fool." What Jia Zicheng will say next, we'll find out in the next chapter.
Chapter Fifty-One: He Scolds, She Blames; Rain Blinds, Wind Blinds; She Endures Tears, Swallows Her Voice; Pearls Sink, Jade Shatters. It is said that Jia Zicheng, upon hearing Zhu Pi's words, was filled with anger and sneered, "Old Master Xi, are you stupid? In this world, a john doesn't just know one prostitute, and a prostitute has more than one john. One minute Zhao, Qian, Sun, and Li have left, the next Zhou, Wu, Zheng, and Wang have entered. Whoever has money is their parent; whoever has power is their ancestor. Those johns without money fawn over you to your face, but curse you behind your back. These tricks are..." Their family's old ways are not surprising. However, the insistence on a direct confrontation, with each side clearly divided, is undeniably unpleasant. "You're just a poor probationary official, and I'm just a poor scholar's advisor; we're nowhere near the status of those wealthy officials or powerful figures. Even drinking here tonight makes us feel unworthy, as if we're beneath our station. As the saying goes, if this place doesn't keep you, there are other places that will. Let's each use our own methods and abilities." With that, he pushed aside his seat, pulled Zhu Pi along, and left.
Ruyu hurriedly stepped forward to stop them, laughing, "Why is Master Jia so angry? I feel you're embarrassed too. Even if you don't consider my face, you should at least consider my sister's. Besides, my sister just left, and you're already angry and leaving. My sister will certainly blame me, and Mother will also say I've offended someone. I'm truly innocent. Please wait until my sister comes back before you leave." She then turned to Zhu Pi and said, "How can you leave like this? Why don't you sit down for me? If you really leave, don't ever come here again." Zhu Pi laughed, "I didn't mean to leave, you..." "But you've wronged him. Master Jia pulled me away, and I couldn't refuse. You should have kept Master Jia here." Ruyu spat, "Pah! Don't make me curse you. If you hadn't instigated it, Master Jia wouldn't have been angry or wanted to leave. You're the one who does good or bad things, you can bully others but not me. Master Jia, you're such a sensible person, how could you use this to take over the Zhu family's household? As the saying goes, good people don't believe in ghosts stirring things up." Who knew that their pushing and shoving in the room would inevitably raise their voices, which quickly alerted the servants outside the room, who hurriedly went to inform Qianjin. Rujin rushed to the back and indeed saw Jia Zicheng trying to leave, with Ruyu holding him back, while Zhu Pi sat to the side with a faint smile. Ru Jin walked over and grabbed Zi Cheng's sleeve, forcing a smile, "Why did you get so upset about the meal and want to leave? What's wrong?" Seeing Ru Jin arrive, Ru Yu let go of his sleeve and went over, saying, "Alright, sister's here. I don't know why Master Jia is angry and wants to leave, but I couldn't persuade him to stay. Master Zhu was also subtly provoking me, making it impossible for me to ignore both sides. Since you're here, whether they leave or not is none of my business." With that, she dashed out of the room and went to Qianjin to accompany Xu Chunfang.
Jia Zi Cheng, seeing Ru Jin, became even angrier. Seeing Ru Yu leave, clearly heading towards Qianjin, he feared that if the Xu family saw Ru Jin had come to his place, he would leave again. It was clear that his family still flattered the Xu family, so he let out a cold laugh and said, "You don't need to keep me here. We are not worthy to sit here. It would be a disservice to your beloved, while he sits in Ruyu's room. It is only right that we leave so that they can come." He then flung off his sleeve and turned to Zhu Pi, saying, "Master Xi, please sit here for a while. I have to go back to the yamen on business." He then strode out of the room and came to the front. Seeing that Ruyu's room was brightly lit and filled with laughter and chatter, he stopped and deliberately coughed, saying, "Come back tomorrow and settle accounts with that slut Rujin. Let's see if she thinks she has any respect for people. I'm not afraid of any heavenly king or bodhisattva who has the power to turn the tide. Shen Wanshan's wealth will protect her. Hmph! Everyone should be careful." After saying this, he turned and left, returning to the yamen by the same route.
Seeing that Jia Zicheng was determined to leave, Zhu Pi felt he could not remain seated any longer and rose to apologize for disturbing him. He said, "I will have someone send the money for the banquet tomorrow." He then came out and caught up with Jia Zicheng, calling out, "Brother Zicheng, wait for me!" Jia Zicheng turned around, saw Zhu Pi, and stopped. Zhu Pi stepped forward and said, “This feast we’ve had today is truly a disappointment. Looking back, it’s utterly meaningless. Brother Zicheng, you told me not to be angry, so why are you so upset?” Jia Zicheng replied, “You still have something to say? Don’t be so irritating. I’ve never been treated with such rudeness in my life. We are no match for the Xu family, but they wear their anger on their sleeves, making things difficult for us. Let them try my methods first.” Zhu Pi laughed again, “Fine, fine, that’s the only thing I don’t believe. Tomorrow when you see Rujin, that anger will have vanished. You can only say these harsh words to me now.” Jia Zicheng, hearing this, said anxiously, “Are you really going to make me angry to death? Do you expect me to swear an oath? I won’t argue with you about the truth now, you just wait and see.” Zhu Pi was afraid that Jia Zicheng wouldn’t like his family, so he deliberately provoked him again, forcing him to make things difficult for the Zhang family, so he could sit back and watch the two fight. Seeing Jia Zicheng's serious anxiety, she smiled, took his hand, and said, "What does it matter to me whether it's true or not? I won't provoke you, nor can I stop you. I'll just listen to you. Besides, I haven't finished eating yet. Let's talk about this later." Without waiting for Zicheng's reply, she took his hand and left as if flying. Let's
leave Jia and Zhu aside for now. Now, let's talk about Rujin. Seeing them leave in anger, she was filled with regret, knowing that trouble was coming soon. This Jia fellow was not to be trifled with; he always sought trouble even when there was nothing wrong, let alone when he had a reason to cause trouble. Moreover, with Zhu Pi stirring things up inside, it was even easier for trouble to arise. However, since they had already left, there was no way to turn back, so she could only listen to it. She stood at the door for a while, thinking, and then went in. When she reached Ruyu's room, she heard a commotion inside, as if people were arguing. She quickly stepped forward, lifted the curtain, and saw Xu Chunfang standing up, also about to leave. Among the people who came with him, some advised him to leave, while others said he should. Ru Yu stood to the side like a puppet, silent. Seeing this, Ru Jin, both anxious and amused, said, "What's wrong, Master Xu? Why are you leaving again? What bad luck I've had today? I've run into you all while you're all angry." It turned out that Xu Chunfang, relying on his youth, good looks, and considerable wealth, was arrogant and self-centered. He had initially invited friends over for drinks, but upon entering, he learned that Ru Jin was with Jia Zhu and his wife. Having also heard rumors that Jia Zicheng was Ru Jin's lover, he was already somewhat displeased and prepared to leave. However, Zhang Sanbao and his wife repeatedly persuaded him to come out, and then ordered wine to be served. Seeing their hospitable hospitality, Xu Chunfang gave up.
Suddenly, someone came from behind saying that Jia Zicheng was angry and wanted to leave, so Rujin went to the back. While hesitating, he heard Jia Zicheng speaking outside, and his anger flared, which he then directed at Rujin. He thought to himself, "You've always told me that Jia Zicheng isn't a good person. If you know he's not a good person, you shouldn't be close to him. If your family is afraid he'll cause trouble and dares not be negligent, you should at least respect him and keep your distance. Who knew that not only did you not respect him and keep your distance, but you even became friends with him? I wouldn't interfere with your friendship with him, but why did you trick me into becoming acquainted with you? Jia Zicheng knows you're friends with me and will definitely not tolerate it; he's clearly making him my enemy. Although I'm not afraid of him, Jia Zicheng is, after all, a restless person, habitually..." He'll stir up trouble, making me constantly wary of him. I didn't come to your house for pleasure; I've clearly come to suffer. If I'm even slightly unprepared and he defiles me, how can I face anyone? Just now, he was spreading rumors outside, every word of which was an insult to me. In my entire life, I've never been the subject of gossip; I've only ever been the one being criticized, never the one being criticized. If I hadn't held my tongue then and said a few words to him, it would have surely led to a fight and a major incident. But now that I've endured it, I'm truly resentful. Tomorrow, the Jia family will surely gossip about me to everyone, laughing at my incompetence, saying I cowered and dared not confront him. Besides, when I came, I knew... Since the Jia family was here, I was willing to leave. The old man and woman repeatedly tried to persuade me to stay, saying that we should leave each other without disturbing one another, and that the Jia family would be leaving soon. They said they didn't want the Jia family to hold a banquet here, as it was annoying. They insisted on staying, but because of Zhu Pi's sake, they couldn't refuse. It was already agreed that we would disperse at the first watch of the night. I only agreed because they were so earnest; otherwise, I could have hosted a banquet at any other house, and I wouldn't have bothered with them. However, I was more familiar with them than with others because Ru Jin had treated me well. It seemed that they had deliberately kept me here to suffer the humiliation of Jia Zicheng, as if it had been pre-arranged, to bring the Jia family into the picture. "They're trying to embarrass me. Besides, it's even more difficult in front of these friends. Should I come tomorrow or not? If I come, I'm afraid Jia Zicheng will cause trouble; if I don't come, people will laugh at me for being cowardly." Thinking this, Xu Chunfang grew increasingly fearful and angry. Suddenly, he saw Rujin come to stop him. Being in a bad mood, he didn't even ask why Rujin was his friend, and blurted out, "You ask me what's wrong? You'll know yourself. Don't pretend nothing's wrong. In my opinion, you don't need to keep me here. Go and bring the Jia family back; that's the important thing." Saying this, he angrily ordered the servants to light lamps and go outside, ignoring the others who had come with him. Seeing Xu Chunfang leave in a huff, everyone was disappointed. Since they had no host, they figured it was best to leave as well, so they scattered.
Earlier, Jia Zicheng had been making a scene in the back, but Zhang Sanbao and his wife had already received word and rushed out. Jia Zhu had already left. Seeing that Xu Chunfang was also angered, and wanting to step forward to confront him, it was too late. Turning back, he saw Rujin looking like a woman in tears, and Ruyu standing there in a daze. Just as he was about to ask Ruyu, a servant from the Xu family hurriedly returned, throwing ten silver coins onto the table and saying, "This is the price my master paid for your wine. He told me to bring it over. I just forgot to pay, otherwise I would have thought my master was trying to renege on the price and was just deliberately getting angry." After saying this, he turned and left. Zhang Sanbao shouted loudly after him, "Second Master, please wait a moment, I have something to ask you." No matter how loudly he shouted, the servant didn't turn around and left.
