The Noble Lady's Training Diary - Chapter 46: Emergency

"lady"
Come in.
Ronggu took small steps around the steaming screen and saw that Li Zhiyi was pretending to be asleep. Her breathing slowed down unconsciously.
"This servant was reckless today, please punish me, Madam."
Li Zhiyi opened her eyes, her slightly upturned eyes reddened by the steam.
"It's alright, the root of the problem lies with me."
Li Zhiyi knew perfectly well that Rong Gu was just eager to regain her favor and was acting somewhat hastily.
Rong Gu breathed a sigh of relief, went around behind Li Zhiyi, and began to massage her shoulders.
"How can you say that, Madam?"
"Aunt Rong, should I not have done that?"
Everything was supposed to remain the same, proceeding as planned, but things changed with Tang Wenxu. He had always been capricious and willful, and Li Zhiyi felt she had never truly understood him. His sudden change left her bewildered and flustered. Before she could sort out her thoughts, she chose to avoid him.
"Has Madam ever considered that perhaps what the Marquis cares about is that you arrange a concubine for him?"
"Perhaps," Li Zhiyi murmured in response. She cupped a handful of water in her hands and watched the clear water trickle back through her fingers.
When it was time for him to retire for the night, a servant came from the front courtyard and said that the Marquis had some business to attend to and would be staying in the front courtyard.
The servants of the main house didn't say anything, but they were somewhat puzzled. The Marquis and his wife were newly married, and whenever the Marquis was in the mansion, he would stay in the backyard every single day. So what business did he have to deal with today, which was the New Year?
That's how it is in the inner quarters of a household. If there's any commotion in any courtyard, the whole mansion will know about it in no time, let alone when the main characters are the master and mistress of the Marquis's mansion.
Li Zhiyi didn't show anything unusual. She simply had soup delivered to the front yard and then went to bed early.
She had only been lying down for a short while when she felt dizzy and had palpitations. She was usually very healthy, but today she felt palpitations after getting a little excited.
"It's time to call the royal physician," Li Zhiyi thought, clutching her chest.
After tossing and turning until midnight, she finally drifted off to sleep.
The seat beside me sank, and in my half-dreaming, half-awake state, the familiar scent beside me gradually blended with the warm fragrance of the tent.
When Li Zhiyi woke up, it was still pitch black, and she didn't know what time it was.
The bed curtains were warm and cozy, perfect for a good night's sleep, but Li Zhiyi was wide awake. She pressed her temples, but when she raised her hand, she touched a warm and firm arm.
Li Zhiyi blinked, adjusting to the dim light, before she could make out a blurry outline beside her.
So last night wasn't a dream. Her tense nerves had barely relaxed when she suddenly thought: He clearly said he'd stay in the front yard, so how did he end up in her bed in the middle of the night? And why didn't he react at all to all this noise?
Perhaps it was a habit from the military camp, but Tang Wenxu usually woke up a little earlier than her, and sometimes when she woke up first, she could wake him up too. But at this moment, he showed no signs of waking up at all, probably because he was too tired. On the way to Tangyuan yesterday, she noticed the pale blue under his eyes.
When the servant came to deliver the message last night, she guessed that something was really wrong, and it was probably about the Lou family. However, she still had some doubts. Perhaps he was angry with her. The thought that flashed through her mind made her feel somewhat relieved. But now that this person was sleeping peacefully beside her, she felt a pang of pity.
Li Zhiyi chuckled at her own turbulent thoughts, but ultimately, fearing she might wake the person beside her, she slowed her breathing.
Li Zhiyi slept soundly after taking a nap. When she opened her sleepy eyes, Tang Wenxu was standing by the bed in a snow-white nightgown. It was just getting light outside, which was his usual time to get up.
At first, the maids were surprised to see Tang Wenxu, thinking that the two had 'made up'. The atmosphere was really not like that, so everyone was very cautious in their actions.
Li Zhiyi naturally wouldn't allow gossip about their discord to spread in the courtyard. She walked up to Tang Wenxu, and the maidservant who was helping her dress automatically stepped aside.
The two were dressed in snow-white nightgowns, and the woman carefully tidied the man's clothes, just like an ordinary couple.
The tall man stretched out his arms, his eyes drooping lazily, his gaze sweeping over the woman who was a head shorter than him. Her unadorned face was very close, revealing a hint of unconcealed weariness.
He finished his business early last night and only sent the servant to deliver the message to see her reaction. He was annoyed to hear from his subordinates that she had gone to rest early, but hearing the rumors circulating in the mansion stirred a pang of pity, and he returned to the inner courtyard. Out of a man's awkward pride, he didn't disturb the servants, but instead, as before, secretly slipped back inside.
As soon as he entered the room, he noticed the woman on the bed was breathing unevenly; she was clearly not asleep, and it was almost midnight. If he hadn't come back this time, he probably would have thought she was heartless again.
Just as his grandmother hadn't said those words, he would never have known she still worried about him. She always hid her emotions very well.
The two dressed themselves in silence and headed towards Tangyuan together.
Because it was the New Year, Alan specially picked out a light red dress from a pile of newly made clothes, paired with a lotus-white cloak. With her cloud-like hair, peach-blossom cheeks, red lips, and white teeth, she looked like a lady stepping out of a portrait. Tang Wenxu looked at Li Zhiyi's attire and, in a daze, seemed to see the round-faced little girl outside Luozhou City a few years ago. Now, thinking back, her adult-like demeanor and intimidating words were somewhat naive and adorable.
"We've met before."
When they reached the outside of Lengxiang Garden, Tang Wenxu suddenly spoke.
Li Zhiyi turned her head to look at him, her face full of questions.
"Six years ago, in Luozhou," Tang Wenxu added.
Luozhou—that should have been when she went back to visit her grandparents. But Li Zhiyi had no recollection of Tang Wenxu whatsoever.
No, I should remember it, but I only heard about it from other people.
"Don't you remember?"
"That year, my father was busy with many things and had no time to visit my grandparents, so I often traveled between the capital and Luozhou." So many years have passed, she has no recollection of when she met whom.
"I don't remember..."
Tang Wenxu narrowed his eyes and said meaningfully, "But I was deeply impressed."
Li Zhiyi pondered his implied meaning but could not find the answer: "But what have I done?"
Six years ago, Li Zhiyi was just a teenager, a time when she was beginning to understand things. At that time, she was learning to manage a household and socialize, and she was also being watched by two strict nannies. She dared not make any mistakes outside, lest she do anything to offend him.
However, a smile appeared on his lips: "If you don't remember, then you don't remember. Anyway, you confessed to me first."
Li Zhiyi's heart skipped a beat. She lowered her eyes, and the feeling of palpitation surged up again, as if someone was beating a drum on her chest. A dull pain filled her chest and rose to her temples, making it difficult to even breathe.
"What's wrong?" The person beside him slowed down, and Tang Wenxu also stopped. However, when he looked down, Li Zhiyi's pale face came into view.
"Perhaps I didn't sleep well last night." Before she could finish her explanation, Tang Wenxu grabbed her hand.
His large, warm hand gripped hers, like a freshly heated hand warmer, the heat reaching deep into her heart, even suppressing her palpitations. She felt as if she had found a source of light in the darkness, instinctively drawing closer and holding on tighter.
Tang Wenxu was focused on feeling the pulse in his palm and didn't notice that his brow was gradually furrowing. Even someone as superficial as him could sense that something was wrong with the pulse.
"It's alright, let's go to Tangyuan first," Li Zhiyi said softly, but did not pull away from that large hand.
"Even in this state, Madam is still thinking about this."
His tone turned cold and low: "Should I praise you for being 'dutiful'?"
"It hurts..." Li Zhiyi could no longer hear what Tang Wenxu was saying, but she subconsciously felt her hand being gripped painfully. The snow in front of her blurred into a hazy expanse, and the light source gradually shrank to a single point.
Tang Wenxu swiftly caught the limp woman by her slender waist.
Only when he actually held the person in his arms did he feel that the weight had become much lighter.
He mumbled a curse, picked up the woman who had become lighter, and strode back the way he came.
"Summon the imperial physician, quickly!"
