Life Like a Dream - Chapter 8: Father and Daughter Reunited

Tao Weidong attempted to rape an 11-year-old girl. Due to the extremely heinous nature of the crime, he was sentenced to 10 years in prison and sent to a prison in Northwest China to serve his sentence.
Because of his good behavior in prison, Tao Weidong was released early in June 1986. Outside the prison gates, he pondered for a long time whether he should return to Nanjing Forestry University to reunite with Yang Nan and Wang Ping. But for over eight years, not a single family member had visited him, and he was deeply saddened. Of course, he also knew that his heinous acts had deeply disappointed them, and that he was entirely to blame. At this moment, he was conflicted, unsure of where his place should be.
He strolled along the main road in front of the prison, and it wasn't until evening that he reached a small town called Yunshan. He spent the night sleeping under the eaves of a shop.
The next day, around 4 a.m., he was awakened by the sound of the shop door opening.
After talking with the person who opened the door, he learned that the young man, who was about 25 or 26 years old, was the owner of the xiaolongbao (soup dumpling) shop, and his name was Zhu Bin.
Because Tao Weidong didn't want others to know about his past and was too ashamed to return to Nanjing Forestry University, he made up a story to tell Zhu Bin, changing his name and age:
His name is Tao Qiang, and he is 29 years old. A few days ago, his girlfriend was harassed by two thugs. In a fit of anger, he beat one of them unconscious, presumably seriously injured, and his life might be in danger. To avoid unnecessary trouble, he fled.
Zhu Bin, a spirited young man, greatly admired Tao Qiang's actions. Then he realized that his wife was due to give birth in a little over a month, and he was worried about whether to close the shop or hire a helper. It seemed Tao Qiang's arrival was perfectly timed.
So he said to Tao Qiang, "Brother Qiang, what are your plans for the future?"
Tao Qiang said, "I think I should stay out here for a while. If that person dies, wouldn't it be like walking into a trap if I went back?"
Zhu Bin: "Brother Qiang, since you don't want to go back, how about you help out at my shop?"
Tao Qiang agreed without hesitation.
In this way, Tao Qiang quickly learned how to make his family's xiaolongbao (soup dumplings) from Zhu Bin, and made the shop his home. He would make and sell the dumplings from dawn to afternoon, go to the market to buy vegetables, and sleep in the shop's attic at night.
In 1987, when registering his identity information, thanks to Zhu Bin's sincerity and generosity, this shop became Tao Qiang's home address. Soon after, Tao Qiang successfully obtained his household registration book and ID card, becoming a true resident of Yunshan.
In the following years, Zhu Bin introduced him to several girlfriends, but he only had eyes for Yang Nan and Wang Ping, so he rejected them all.
At 9:00 AM on July 18, 1990, Zhu Bin entrusted his small shop to Tao Qiang because his mother was sick, and then rushed to the hospital.
Around 10 a.m., a young woman walked into the store. There were quite a few customers at the time, and Tao Qiang only glanced at her, thinking she was very pretty. After looking at him a few times, the young woman excitedly called out, "Husband!"
Only then did Tao Qiang take a good look at the young woman. She bore a resemblance to Yang Nan from 20 years ago, but upon closer inspection, she wasn't Yang Nan. Since it wasn't Yang Nan, it must be Wang Ping. Twelve years had passed; the little girl from back then had grown into a charming young woman. No wonder he hadn't recognized her at first.
"Pingping! Is that you?"
Wang Ping stammered, "It's me, it's Pingping, husband, I'm so happy to see you, thank God."
Tao Qiang was overjoyed and said, "Pingping, I never expected to see you here. I haven't gone back yet, you don't hate me, do you?"
The understanding Wang Ping said, "Honey, you must have had your reasons for not coming home, I understand. Thankfully, I left yesterday morning and saw you today. Let's never be apart again, okay, honey?"
"Okay, I promise you, we'll never be apart. Oh, by the way, Pingping, have you had breakfast?"
"Not yet. I just arrived and was planning to have breakfast before asking about you."
Tao Qiang quickly served the last two baskets of steamed buns to Wang Ping. After Wang Ping finished one basket, all the other customers left the shop.
Tao Qiang said to Wang Ping, "Pingping, you must be starving after your long journey. Eat these steamed buns too."
"I can only eat two more at most, you can eat the rest, okay?"
Tao Qiang had been busy for several hours and only managed to eat a basket of steamed buns in his spare time. He was a little hungry at this point, so he nodded, and the two of them quickly finished the basket of steamed buns.
Tao Qiang knew that the two of them had a lot to ask each other, and it would be a shame if others disturbed them. Since the steamed buns were sold out for the day, he locked the shop door from the inside, which was more than ten hours earlier than usual.
"Honey, it's so hot outside. What will people think if you close the door?"
"Who cares? Do you want others to overhear our whispers and see how intimate we are?"
Because Wang Ping called him "husband" just like she used to at home, and despite the sweltering heat, Tao Qiang knew that Wang Ping must not have married. She still held him, her father and husband, in her heart, which truly moved Tao Qiang deeply. He thought that after 12 years, their reunion would surely involve many things they couldn't let outsiders hear or see.
"Pingping, you said you'd go find out about me after breakfast. Where do you plan to go to find out?"
Since it was just the two of them, father and daughter, in the shop, Wang Ping told Tao Qiang without hesitation, "Prison. Unless you commit another crime and get a longer sentence, you should be released by 1988 at the latest. But you haven't come home yet, so I had no choice but to go to the prison to find out about you. I've also made the worst-case scenario plan: if the prison doesn't know where you've gone, I'm prepared to embark on a long journey to find you. Even if you go to the ends of the earth, I will find you, otherwise I will never go home."
After saying these words, Wang Ping couldn't help but cry.
Tao Qiang quickly hugged her and said, "It's all my fault. I'm sorry that you've suffered."
Seeing Tao Qiang's concern for her, Wang Ping stopped crying and said, "Honey, I'm alright. You spent ten years in prison; you must have suffered unimaginable hardships. Can you tell me how you got through those twelve years?"
"Of course I'll tell you. I'm more interested in knowing about you, your mother, and our child—how the three of you have been doing these past 12 years. Oh, by the way, did you give me a son or a daughter?"
"daughter."
Tao Qiang felt a sense of loss; why was it another daughter? But he didn't show it.
"Oh, it's a daughter. Great. What name did you give her?"
"Wang Shu".
"Wang Shu? What a lovely name. Pingping, let's talk about my situation and my family later. You're all teary-eyed right now. I'll go get a towel; please wash your face first, okay?"
Wang Ping said, "Honey, I don't know how long it will take to find you, so I've packed a towel, toothbrush, toothpaste, and a change of clothes. They're in the travel bag I brought in."
After saying that, Wang Ping got up, took out a towel from her bag, and then began to inspect the small shop.
This breakfast shop has a usable area of only about 20 square meters, divided into two rooms, one inside and one outside.
The inner room, about seven or eight square meters, was the work area for making and steaming buns. There was a liquefied gas stove, which Zhu Bin had specially bought for Tao Qiang to use for cooking. There was also a sink for washing vegetables and faces.
There were four small square tables in the outer room, and a loft was built on top of them, which was where Tao Qiang slept.
Wang Ping asked, "Honey, is this shop yours?"
Tao Qiang said embarrassedly, "It's someone else's; I'm just an employee."
"You'd rather work in this shabby shop than go home, I really don't know what you're thinking. Is the owner paying you a high wage, or have you been bewitched by some vixen?"
"It's not much. Besides food and drink, the shop owner gives me 120 yuan a month. Actually, I didn't want it, but he insisted on giving it to me, so I couldn't refuse. As for the vixen, I swear to God, there's absolutely no one. The main reason I don't go back is that I'm too ashamed to face you."
"I trust you."
"Based on the letter we received from her on the third day, she must have gone home that noon and overheard the conversation between you, me, and my mother. She then learned about our incestuous relationship and that the child in my womb was yours. She felt that this family was not normal and that she could not continue living there, so she ran away from home and never came back."
Tao Qiang hurriedly asked, "Do you remember what was written in that letter?"
"Just two sentences: I never want to see you again. Don't try to find me; the day you find me will be the day my life ends."
"Oh, I see. So you didn't go looking for it, or you didn't dare to go looking for it, right?"
"Not entirely. My mother went to the first grade class of Nanlin No. 2 Middle School, where she had just been admitted and had only studied for half a month, a few times, but she still had no news of her. According to her homeroom teacher, she probably dropped out of school."
"Since we haven't found her yet, she might not be at Nanjing Forestry University anymore. Of course, we can't rule out the possibility that she's deliberately hiding from you and is actually still at Nanjing Forestry University. Let's keep a closer eye on things in the future; maybe we'll reunite someday. That's all for Tingting's matter. Now, you can focus on telling us about yourself."
Wang Ping nodded and said, "On October 8th, which was our wedding anniversary, I gave birth to Shu'er. My mother delivered the baby at home. I was skeptical of her skills at first, but it turns out she was right."
"What did your mother say?"
"She said that before I was born, you and my mother had thoroughly studied the birthing process. After having two daughters, you were even more familiar with the basic techniques and precautions for childbirth, so there would definitely be no problem delivering me. However, she also told me that if I had a difficult birth, I would have to go to the hospital."
"I can imagine that you gave birth to Shu'er smoothly, right?"
"Yes."
Thinking that Wang Ping's daughter also bore him the surname Wang, Tao Qiang asked, "Pingping, let me ask you, why does Shu'er also have the surname Wang?"
"My mom was mainly concerned about the household registration issue, so she discussed it with Wang Dawei and finally decided to say that she was an abandoned baby they found and register her as their youngest daughter. I could only be her older sister, even though I breastfed her every day. At the time, my mom also said that I was only 14 years old, and in order to avoid arousing suspicion from teachers and classmates because my breasts were too full when I went to school, she wanted me to wean her after three months of breastfeeding and switch to formula, but I firmly disagreed."
"This is for your own good, why don't you agree?"
"Because I heard that breastfeeding is more beneficial to the healthy development of children, and besides, I had plenty of milk, and Shu'er couldn't finish it all. I had to express some every day, otherwise my breasts would be very engorged and uncomfortable. I persisted until Shu'er was 10 months old before weaning her."
"Ten months, which is until early August 1979. I remember you took a six-month leave of absence from school at that time. Were you still breastfeeding Shu'er during the second semester of your first year of high school and not attending school?"
"In June 1978, I took the high school entrance exam and was admitted to Nanlin No. 1 High School. However, because I was heavily pregnant, my mother arranged for me to take a six-month leave of absence, as you know. When the next semester started, I wanted to continue breastfeeding Shuer. My reason to my mother was that it might be difficult to learn a year's worth of knowledge in one semester, so it would be better to start high school again in September. After my mother agreed, I went to apply for another six-month leave of absence."
"You've really suffered. You became a mother at such a young age, and it also interfered with your studies. It's all my fault."
"Honey, don't blame yourself. I did it willingly."
"My dear daughter, what happened next? Did you get into university? Where did you work?"
"Although pregnancy and childbirth had some impact on my studies, because my foundation was relatively good, my grades were always among the top in my class. In 1982, I was admitted to the Department of Political Education at the Provincial Normal College. Before graduation, I begged Wang Dawei to get me a spot at the Nanlin County Intermediate People's Court, and I started working there at the end of July 1986."
"Pingping, why do you insist on going to the court, such a thankless department?"
"It's all because of you, my husband. After you were arrested, my mother felt it was a huge loss of face and was too embarrassed to inquire about your situation. It wasn't until one day when she saw a court notice that she learned you had been sentenced to ten years in prison. Because of her pride, she never went to the court to find out where you were serving your sentence, and I didn't have the courage to inquire about your situation either. So I volunteered to work at the court, with only one purpose: to find out where you were being held so I could visit you in prison."
"I'm so sorry to have troubled you, my dear daughter. Why did you only come looking for me yesterday?"
"Shortly after I joined the court, my superiors and colleagues all agreed on my abilities: I wrote quickly and beautifully with a fountain pen, was pretty and quiet, and because of my introverted personality, I didn't talk much. So they assigned me to be a court clerk, a job I held for four years. Because the archives were very strictly managed, I never had the chance to go in. Last month, the archives administrator, Sister Sun, retired, and I volunteered to take over her job. My superiors saw that I was diligent and had never made a mistake, so they agreed. I only found your file a few days ago, so I took 10 days off to come and find you."
"You need a reason to ask for leave. What is your reason?"
"Of course there's a reason, and it's legitimate. Let me tell you something first. In April 1987, Wang Dawei died in a car accident while on a business trip. When I asked for leave, I told my supervisor that I received a letter from my hometown in Northeast China last month, saying that many things, including the house, needed to be handled by my family. As Wang Dawei's eldest daughter, I was the only suitable person to go back home, and I wanted to ask for 10 days of leave to go back. Because I had performed well in the past four years and had never been late, my supervisor granted me leave, which gave me the opportunity to come and see you."
"Pingping, I have a question. You mentioned Wang Dawei several times today. When did you start calling him by his first name?"
"In October 1977, when I learned that you were my biological father, I treated Wang Dawei as an outsider. Unless absolutely necessary, I rarely called him 'Dad.' Isn't it normal for me to call him by his name when I'm with you?"
Tao Qiang nodded quickly and said, "I thought it was perfectly normal for you to call his name in front of him and when you're with me."
Wang Ping was a stunning beauty, and Tao Qiang was curious to know if any men had pursued her over the years, and how she had reacted. So he asked with a smile, "My daughter is so beautiful, haven't any male classmates or colleagues pursued you?"
Wang Ping didn't hide anything: "To be honest, some classmates wrote me love letters in junior high school, but I threw them in the trash without even reading them. In high school and college, quite a few boys wanted to be friends with me, but I refused them all. After I started working, some male colleagues expressed their love to me directly, and some female colleagues wanted to introduce me to potential partners, but I politely declined them all."
Tao Qiang felt incredibly sweet, as if he had eaten honey, but he still wanted his daughter to say it herself: "Why?"
Without hesitation, Wang Ping replied, "It's all because of you, my husband. No one can replace you in my heart. The thought of being close to or even sleeping with another man gives me goosebumps. As I get older, more and more people are trying to set me up with men. Last year, I simply announced publicly that I had a boyfriend. At that time, my only wish was for you to come back to me quickly and for us to get married as soon as possible."
