An old beggar's words touched the hearts of Chinese people worldwide (come and see).
A friend of mine loves boiled tripe and often drags me through the streets and alleys of Harbin, searching for Hui Muslim restaurants to try. He eventually found one on Jingwei Street. The storefront was small, and the hygiene was questionable, but the boiled tripe was indeed authentic. For a while, we frequented that place for a feast.
One autumn afternoon last year, we were sitting in that small restaurant, drinking and chatting. It wasn't lunchtime, and we were the only two regulars. The restaurant owner, a young man, sat next to us with a beer, chatting idly. It was a very lazy afternoon.
Just as we were ordering our second plate of boiled tripe, an old beggar pushed open the door.
The restaurant was located in a bustling area, and we were used to seeing down-on-their-luck people and those pretending to be down-on-their-luck seeking help. The owner of this small restaurant was quite kind; whenever someone asked for help, he would give them something, more or less. Today was no exception. Before the old man could even speak, he took out a yuan and handed it to him. The old man refused, his voice muffled, saying no, no, he didn't want money, just a bite of leftover food would be enough.
This surprised us greatly—this was a genuine beggar, and he didn't want money. I couldn't help but take a closer look at the old man; he must have been over 80, his body still quite sturdy, his back very straight. Most remarkably, although his clothes were worn, they were generally clean, which is extremely rare among beggars.
One might think that begging in a restaurant would be the right place, but that wasn't the case at all. The small restaurant relied on repeat customers, and leftovers were simply poured into the serving dish.
