Give Love to Dad - Chapter 087

And so, the relationship between Long Tao and Zou Bei changed. Neither of them spoke to the other. Sometimes Ding Dang would ask what was going on between her and Long Tao, and Zou Bei would just smile and shake her head. She and Long Tao really had nothing going on. Speaking her mind would at least make things better for both of them in the future, and at least she wouldn't feel like she owed Long Tao anything anymore.
Alone at the bottom of the dormitory building, Zou Bei walked through a path. Below was a clear stream lined with willows, their slender branches reaching vertically to the water's surface, swaying gently with the water plants. Clumps of wildflowers dotted the banks, and a school of small fish and shrimp darted about, carefree and enviable.
Occasionally, a group of mischievous students would come down to play in the water, but the teachers were not allowed to know. Zou Bei wanted to try it today too. She looked around and didn't find any gatekeeper checking. She happily came to the riverbank, took off her shoes and socks, and stretched out her delicate ankles to test the water temperature. It was icy cold, but it was refreshing.
"If you're not afraid of catching a cold, then go down." The deep voice behind her startled Zou Bei, making her jump so much she almost fell into the river. She turned around with wide eyes, saw it was Long Tao, and glared at him angrily; "You scared me to death!?"
"It's not that I'm trying to scare you, it's that you're a coward." Long Tao touched his nose, turned his head away, and refused to look at the fair, tender feet in the water; "Wearing shoes, aren't you afraid your dad will worry about you?"
Zou Bei's eyes darted around, and she said with a grin, "I thought you weren't going to talk to me, so why were you secretly following me?"
"Hmph, why shouldn't I talk to you?" Long Tao reached out and pulled her out of the water; "I've been chasing you for so long, even if you reject me, we can still be friends, right? You don't want to?"
“Hehe…” Zou Bei followed him to the side, her feet covered in sand, which made her very uncomfortable. She rubbed her feet and pouted, “Why would I not want to? I’m just afraid you’ll dislike me.”
Long Tao bent down and picked up Zou Bei's sneakers, holding her hand without letting go. He walked to the stone in front of them and let Zou Bei sit down. Long Tao squatted down and looked at her seriously, saying, "If you've thought it through, I'm willing to be one of those who support you. But, Zou Bei, how many people do you think will support you for something like this? Let alone support, in ancient times, you would have been paraded through the streets."
“I don’t care,” Zou Bei said. “Since I dared to tell you this, I’m afraid the world will find out. Besides, I still have my father, who will help me hold up the sky.”
“Heh…” Long Tao shook his head, and when he looked up unintentionally, he was suddenly stunned. In Zou Bei’s eyes, there was a longing for a blue sky. It was as if that happiness was within reach in her eyes. Her dark pupils were adorned with stars as dazzling as crushed diamonds, sparkling and shining, with a breathtaking brilliance.
“Long Tao…” Zou Bei looked down at him, her expression extremely serious; “I don’t need your support, but I don’t need your opposition either, and I don’t need your consent. You are my best friend, Zou Bei. I want to tell you that I hope someone can share my happiness, and that person is you. If you ever need my help in the future, I will rush to your aid without hesitation.”
Zou Bei's words undoubtedly moved Long Tao. After all, he was still a child and couldn't understand the feeling of heartbreak. This wasn't even his first confession of love, so it didn't make him too sad. To put it another way, it was just sadness. But Zou Bei's voice was full of sorrow, deep and resonant, striking straight into people's hearts...
Long Tao's expression was focused and calm, while Xi Zi, her eyes sparkling with concern, nodded firmly; "I know..."
"You know nothing..." Zou Bei turned her head away and chuckled, then coughed lightly. "What do you know, you're just a kid? I was just kidding."
Long Tao, still feeling sad, blushed deeply after being teased by her and said fiercely, "How could I not understand? It's just incest! I really don't believe that it's a private matter behind closed doors, and it's none of anyone else's business."
Zou Bei froze, her oval face turning deathly pale. The word "chaos"—a word she'd never dared utter before—had been uttered by her best friend today. The feeling was unbearable; she felt as if she'd been thrown into an ice cave, so cold she wished she could die. Zou Bei patted the sand and pebbles from her feet, slowly putting on her shoes and socks. Her face was pale, her knees trembled, and tears streamed down her face. The atmosphere left Long Tao completely bewildered.
"I'm sorry..." Long Tao grasped her trembling hand, his handsome face full of guilt; "I didn't mean to, I didn't mean to hurt you, I just blurted it out, don't be sad, I'll never mention it again."
"It's none of your business..." Zou Bei wiped away the dripping water droplets, but Long Tao felt a pang of heartache. Zou Bei's emotional fluctuations were so drastic; he truly didn't know what to do. "I'm sorry..."
Although this conversation made Long Tao consider Zou Bei a friend, he felt guilty for several days because of his slip of the tongue. Every time he saw Zou Bei, he didn't dare to go up and talk to her. Every class, as soon as he heard the bell ring, he was the first to flee in a panic, afraid of saying the wrong thing again.
Zou Bei remained the same as always, attending classes as usual. She ate meals without a care in the world, with Dingdang always nearby, managing to eat as much as she wanted despite her annoyance. Xia Ling, that eyesore, stopped causing them trouble; perhaps it was just that she hadn't exploded yet. Before they knew it, National Day was approaching, and the long holiday was here. The students were all excited, wishing they could leave today, or even right now.
"Zou Bei, is Uncle Zou coming to pick you up?" Ding Dang asked, munching on a spicy snack, her eyes gleaming with greed. The chili pepper pieces on her fingers stung her eyes; Zou Bei really wanted to eat them.
"Mmm." Zou Bei almost stuck out her tongue. She really wanted to eat it, but Dingdang had asked her if she wanted any, and she had refused without hesitation. Now she was truly regretting it. How could she possibly say, "It looks so delicious to you, I'll just have a little bit"?
"Wow..." Dingdang was fantasizing about Zou Bei's dad. Zou Bei stared at the spicy strips in her hand and was also swallowing her saliva. The atmosphere was strange, but neither of them noticed.
Until Dingdang ate the last spicy snack, Zou Bei was speechless and angrily yelled at her, "How come you ate it all?!"
"Huh?" Dingdang stared wide-eyed at the empty bag and the half-eaten piece still in her mouth. "I...I...didn't you...not eat?"
"That was just now!" Zou Bei angrily packed up the books, and after yelling, Dingdang's face also turned red. Impulsiveness... the devil... bad choice of friends...
Dingdang looked so wronged and innocent, pleadingly at Zou Bei, "I'll go buy some more..."
"I'm not eating anymore." Zou Bei was principled. If she wanted to buy it, why didn't she buy it herself? If it weren't for seeing Dingdang eating so happily, she wouldn't eat that junk food. She tapped the dazed Dingdang with her book. "Let's go. I don't want to eat anymore. Let's go get some ice cream."
"My goodness, ice cream today?" Dingdang really wanted some too, but Zou Bei's appetite was hard to resist. She was always complaining about this and that. Dingdang swallowed hard and said with difficulty, "No ice cream, let's buy something else, okay?"
"Hmm?" Zou Bei glanced at her, teasingly smiling, "Something's not quite right about you today?"
"Just pretend I'm acting strange." Dingdang tried to go up and take Zou Bei's arm, but Zou Bei jumped away, dodging her. Dingdang yelled, "What are you doing?"
"Grandma, can you wipe your hands?" Your hands are covered in chili peppers. If you just hold them like this, how many marks will be left on your body?
Dingdang pouted, ran back to the desk drawer, grabbed some tissues, and vigorously wiped her hands, which were covered in chili peppers, before throwing the tissues away. "Is it okay now, Miss Zou?!"
"Okay, you can hold my arm." Zou Bei laughed so hard she almost cramped up. Dingdang was such a lively character. In the quiet classroom, only their laughter and playful banter remained, drifting through the windows, across mountains and rivers, like starlight in the night, gently and warmly reaching the one in her heart...
