The Complete History of Hong Kong and Taiwan Category III Films (A Must-Read Guide)!!!!!

Most of the films I've watched are from Hong Kong and Taiwan. The criteria for Hong Kong and Taiwan film censorship to classify films as Category III generally refer to excessive violence, gore, horror, and sexual content (even profanity counts), making them unsuitable for children under 18. For example, the mainland Chinese war film *The Great Battle* was classified as Category III in Hong Kong due to its excessive violence and killing scenes. However, the Category III films from Hong Kong and Taiwan that I'm referring to this time are those in the commonly understood sense; everyone understands, so I won't elaborate. Many Category III films from Hong Kong and Taiwan are based on classical Chinese literature, such as *Jin Ping Mei* (adapted from *Jin Ping Shuang Yan*, *Pan Jinlian*, and *Qianxi Jin Ping Mei*); *Hong Lou Chun Shang Chun* (adapted from *Dream of the Red Chamber*); *Liao Zhai Yan Tan* (adapted from parts of *Strange Tales from a Chinese Studio*); and the film of the same name adapted from *The Monk with the Lamp*. Among these, the most famous and successful adaptation is arguably *The Carnal Prayer Mat* (adapted from the classical Chinese erotic novel *Rou Pu Tuan*), directed by Michael Mak and starring Lawrence Ng, Amy Yip, Elvis Tsui, Lo Lieh, and Carrie Ng.

While *The Carnal Prayer Mat* doesn't feature many scenes of female nudity, it is still considered exceptionally erotic. In the film, Lawrence Ng plays Wei Yangsheng, who desires to seduce all women but fears his wife being defiled by others. Therefore, he specifically chooses a well-bred lady from a respectable and strict family (played by Amy Yip) as his wife. Wei Yangsheng, believing himself to be completely safe, recklessly engaged in extramarital affairs with married women everywhere. However, later, his wife was sold into a brothel and subjected to the humiliation of being trampled by thousands, which finally led Wei Yangsheng to repent and become a monk. The film's director and screenwriter thoroughly grasped the spirit of the original "Awakening Zen" story, resulting in a highly successful adaptation. It achieved excellent box office results upon its release and remains one of Hong Kong's highest-grossing Category III films. Later, Wong Jing followed suit, making "Sex and Zen II" (starring Elvis Tsui, Loletta Lee, and Shu Qi) and "Sex and Zen III" (starring Chung Chun and Yang Jia-ling). These two films are also considered excellent Category III films, with erotic content surpassing even "Sex and Zen II," but they lack the smooth storytelling and tight plot of the original.

Many people may have seen the Taiwanese film *Pan Jinlian* (also known as *Jin Ping Mei*), directed by Lai Shui-ching and starring Yang Simin, Shan Li-wen, and Gu Guanzhong. This film was widely circulated in mainland China, and those who have seen it will likely agree that Yang Simin's reputation as having "Asia's most beautiful breasts" was well-deserved. Furthermore, the story is relatively well-written, although many details differ significantly from the familiar *Pan Jinlian* story, which is understandable. However, the final scene featuring a passionate encounter between Pan Jinlian and Wu Song is truly unacceptable to me—it's an insult to the hero Wu Song in my heart!

The renowned writer A Cheng, author of works such as *The Chess King*, *The Tree King*, and *The Child King*, once said: "Speaking of which, only humans possess lust. Different kinds of animals don't become aroused upon seeing other animals, but humans do. This is because humans have imaginations, and it is lust that distinguishes humans from animals." Therefore, discussing Hong Kong and Taiwanese Category III films here is simply human nature. Moreover, even Confucius said, "Food and sex are the great desires of men and women," so why should we hide it—we must find a respectable reason, otherwise we wouldn't be hypocrites.

Many famous Hong Kong and Taiwanese directors have made Category III films; Cha Chuen-yee and Chua Lam are known for their work. Li Han-hsiang, Clifton Ko, Chu Yen-ping, Herman Yau, Michael Mak, and Wong Tai-lai also produced some excellent works. However, in the 1990s, the most influential and enthusiastic director of this genre was Wong Jing.

Wong Jing was Hong Kong's highest-grossing film director from 1990 to 1999, accumulating HK$500-600 million in box office revenue over those 10 years. He is adept at handling various film genres, and has produced many masterpieces in the Category III erotic film field that are still talked about today. In addition to the aforementioned "Sex and Zen II" and "Sex and Zen III," Wong Jing's most famous Category III films are the "Rape" series and the "Manchu" series.

In 1991, Wong Jing produced a Category III film called "Naked Killer," which received excellent reviews after its release, and its lead actress, Chingmy Yau, was nominated for Best Actress at the Hong Kong Film Awards that year. Capitalizing on this success, Wong Jing released "Naked Killer 2: Rape." In fact, the story of "Rape" is completely unrelated to "Naked Killer," except that the two films share the same lead actors: Simon Yam and Chingmy Yau. However, the focus of "Rape" is not on these two, but rather on the scenes between two other actors, Cheng Ho-nam and Ng Suet-man. In the film, Zheng Haonan plays a lawyer who uses his legal knowledge to commit a "legal" rape of Wu Xuewen. Interestingly, this film sparked a significant discussion in Hong Kong at the time, focusing on how to use legal means to protect women's rights and prevent criminals from exploiting legal loopholes. This demonstrates the positive social significance of the Category III film "Rape."

The success of "Rape" led Wong Jing to release three sequels in quick succession: "Rape 2: Uniform Temptation" (starring Athena Chu, Chung Chun, Francis Ng, Joe Ma, and Yang Fan), "Rape 3" (starring Alex Fong, Pinky Cheung, and Angie Cheung), and "Rape Finale: The Last Lamb" (starring Nick Cheung, Athena Chu, Kwan Sau-mei, Ng Yik-cheung, and Yang Fan). "Rape 3" was lackluster and unremarkable. "Rape 2: Uniform Temptation," however, cemented Athena Chu's status as a sex symbol after Chingmy Yau, making it worth watching for that reason alone (though frankly, Chu's role in the film was merely to flaunt her sex appeal, nothing more). "The Last Lamb: The Final Chapter of Rape" is also of mediocre quality. If you remove the erotic elements, it's just a typical boring comedy in the style of Nick Cheung.

Wong Jing's "Qing Dynasty" series is also quite popular in Hong Kong and Taiwan. This series includes "The Ten Tortures of the Qing Dynasty" (starring Wu Qihua, Weng Hong, Xu Jinjiang, and Huang Guangliang), "The Ten Tortures of the Qing Dynasty 2" (starring Zhen Chuqian, Zheng Haonan, and Yang Fan), "The Secret Life of Empress Dowager Cixi" (starring Qiu Shuzhen, Tony Leung Ka-fai, Yu Rongguang, and Chen Guobang), and "The Mystery of the Forbidden Palace of the Qing Dynasty" (starring Weng Hong, Song Benzhong, and Liang Sihao). The more interesting parts of this series are "The Ten Tortures of the Qing Dynasty," based on the story of Yang Naiwu and Xiao Baicai, and "The Secret Life of Empress Dowager Cixi," a fictionalized account of Cixi's rise to power through seduction.

In general, Wong Jing's "Qing Dynasty" series of Category III films focuses on showcasing the sexual interests and sex toys of the ancients, satisfying people's curiosity. Adapting familiar Qing Dynasty palace scandals and folk tales into Category III films naturally guarantees box office success.
