Pornographic publications and dancing

This article is an old work by Mr. Nie Yuntai, published in the August 141st issue of the semi-monthly magazine "Reading Newsletter" in 1946. It can be said that every word is cautionary and insightful; it is not merely a sharp critique of the lewd and immoral trends in Shanghai at the time. Therefore, it is urgently necessary to publish it, hoping to awaken modern people to the truth!

In recent years, criminologists from various countries have discovered from crime statistics that the Netherlands has the fewest criminal offenders. The report states that the Netherlands' only distinctive feature is its emphasis on etiquette and strict boundaries between men and women. For example, in the city of Gemdale near The Hague, it is stipulated that men and women are not allowed to sit within six feet of each other in public places; and the city's prison is perpetually empty, without a single prisoner. Furthermore, criminologists say that all crimes are due to the weakness of the offender's willpower, that is, psychological unsoundness. The facts of the Netherlands prove that the restraint of sexual desire can make people's minds clearer and sounder, thus preventing crime. Therefore, China's traditional ethics and morals, particularly the strict separation of men and women, the so-called "distinction between men and women," have a scientific basis.

In the past thirty years, the number of crimes in the United States has surged, and ten years ago it became the country with the highest crime rate in the world. The promiscuity between men and women in the US is most pronounced, especially in dancing. In recent years, American newspapers have repeatedly reported that physical examinations at certain American universities have revealed that more than half of the female students are no longer virgins. According to US crime reports, in 1939 alone, the number of indecent assaults increased by 7%. In the past six years, rape cases have increased by 50%. Federal Bureau of Investigation Director Hoover once declared: "The moral decay of youth and the increase in crime are the result of the proliferation of pornography." Prison officer Lord said: "Many of the cases I have encountered have been influenced by pornography." The Director of the Federal Bureau of Prisons, Betsy, declared: "This surge in crime is due to the numerous reports of indecent assaults in newspapers, as well as the influence of movies and pornography." Director Hoover also said, "The United States is now working hard to eradicate such pornographic publications." Unfortunately, he didn't realize that the harm of dancing is even greater than that of pornography!

Considering the above points, the flourishing of pornography and dancing has led society to such a degenerate state. Sexual desire is an innate instinct shared by all animals, but animals have natural restraint, while humans possess thought. However, human emotions are easily aroused by sensory contact; therefore, only by strictly establishing etiquette and avoiding opportunities for contact can the impulses of lust be reduced. Lao Tzu said, "Not seeing what is desirable keeps the mind from being disturbed." In other words, seeing what is desirable easily disturbs the mind. Westerners advocate for the liberation of men and women, open social interaction, co-education, and revealing clothing; there is no greater human desire than this. Therefore, our new cultural figures advocate for the complete acceptance of Western culture, while vehemently criticizing our own excellent traditions as cannibalistic old ethics, wanting to overthrow them all. The main purpose of this kind of sexual liberation is to make women easy for men to play with and abuse, to satisfy their desires and desires. This leads many women to fall prey to men's advances, and once they are ensnared, they hastily and reluctantly enter into marriage. Consequently, divorce cases are surging worldwide, with the United States having the highest number. In 1925, there were 200,000 divorce cases in the US. I wrote an article discussing this issue more than a decade ago. Observing the aforementioned cases of American female students' moral decline, we can see that the high number of divorces stems from marriages driven by physical attraction and emotional impulses, lacking rational choice! From a eugenic perspective, children born to parents whose union is purely based on sexual desire will inevitably lack sound willpower, and even more so, profound reason and intellect. A nation with many such parents will have many people with weak wills and insufficient reason. This is proof of the fact that the United States has a particularly high crime rate, while the Netherlands has a particularly low crime rate.

Regarding crimes of indecency, most are due to the enticement of pornography and emotional impulses arising from dancing. These are due to the offender temporarily losing their willpower, not entirely due to innate deficiencies. As for ordinary criminal offenses, such as fraud, fighting, robbery, theft, and murder, these are due to the inherent weakness of the offender's willpower and lack of reason and intelligence. For example, the Netherlands has very strict boundaries between men and women, resulting in very few criminal offenses; and in the city of Gemdale, which has the strictest social order, the prisons are empty year-round. This is entirely due to the innate intelligence and purity of thought; since people have sufficient skills to make a living, they naturally will not commit despicable crimes. Such excellent innate genetics and such strict maintenance of social morality lead to such positive results.

Conversely, the damage caused by countries with particularly high crime rates is truly immeasurable. In 1925 alone, the United States lost 12,000 lives due to murder; the annual damage caused by crime amounted to approximately one million US dollars. Even more worrying, however, is the increasing juvenile delinquency: in 1925, 46 percent of prisoners in New York State courts were between 16 and 25 years old; in local courts, the same age group accounted for 61 percent. These young people belong to a nation full of hope, yet they are already imprisoned—it is truly tragic! (This paragraph is excerpted from my article "The Increase in Crime in America, the Darkness of the Justice System," published in *Legal Weekly* in 1927; the number of crimes has increased significantly in recent years, but I have no copy available.) In 1920, I visited a New York mental hospital. The staff there told me: "The number of mentally ill patients has been gradually increasing in recent years. Our hospital originally had only one facility, which could hold 7,000 people; in recent years, we have increased it to two facilities, which can hold 15,000 people." They also said: "Nine out of ten mental patients in the hospital are suffering from venereal diseases that have entered their brains." "If there are so many mentally ill people in New York alone, then the number of precious young people lost across the United States must be even greater. This is a loss beyond criminals!

Besides the mentally ill, there are also many people who contract venereal diseases. When I traveled to Germany, the then acting ambassador, Mr. Zhang, told me: 'Of the army students sent by the government to study in Germany, very few were able to serve the country after returning; most died from venereal diseases.' I said: 'I heard that the 606 injection in Germany can cure syphilis. How could it not cure it?' Mr. Zhang said: '606 can indeed cure syphilis, but its potency is very strong. Although the syphilis is cured, the heart is damaged, so most people die from heart disease.' I have several relatives; one of them contracted venereal diseases in France and died, and another went insane in the United States due to syphilis and was admitted to a mental hospital, where he was never cured. I have already encountered several people infected with venereal diseases; one can imagine the total number of such people. This is another great loss!"

However, the current losses are still limited. But the resulting generation of citizens from this degenerated race will inevitably suffer from weak morals and rationality, and low work efficiency. This loss to the nation is immeasurable. This is a fact, not an ideal. France is known for its sexual indulgence; when I traveled to Paris, I saw people selling erotic photos at the entrances of parks throughout the city, and the police did not intervene. I have never seen this in other countries. The declining productivity of the French population over the past thirty years is truly due to the enormous impact of sexual indulgence!

Judging from the current situation in the United States, the level of promiscuity among men and women there has probably surpassed that of France, and its future is indeed worrying. We cannot ignore its deeply ingrained problems because of temporary material prosperity. I am writing this not because I have time to worry about America, but because I am truly worried about the youth in our country who admire America! Today, Shanghai has truly become a prototype of Paris and New York. Pornographic publications, brothels, dance halls, rampant crimes of indecency, a surge in criminal cases, and overcrowded prisons—it is on the verge of becoming number one in the world in every aspect. We possess all the factors of depravity found in France and America, so how can we escape its tragic fate? Shanghai has over a hundred dance halls today. Assuming an average of two hundred people per hall, that's twenty thousand people every night, and these people are about to become candidates for the aforementioned American phenomena. As the saying goes, those involved are often blinded by their own interests; these people, lost in their own world, only care about immediate entertainment. How could they know that this single thought of indulgence has already created a connection with prisons, mental hospitals, venereal hospitals, and funeral homes? The relatives and friends I recounted who went mad and died from venereal diseases in the United States and France were all there to pursue their studies; such tragic ends were unimaginable! One of them, before going to Paris, I earnestly warned him, even giving him stern and alarming advice, which he fully understood, yet he still succumbed to the virus. He was thirty then, no longer young; and he had a good grasp of both Chinese and foreign academic subjects, so he couldn't be considered uneducated; however, the temptations of the environment were truly difficult to resist! Therefore, Chinese morality places particular emphasis on propriety and the distinction between men and women, precisely to prevent and avoid mutual attraction! This is a lesson learned from practical experience. Confucius said:
"In hearing lawsuits, I am no different from others; the essential thing is to eliminate lawsuits altogether." Judging from the facts in the Netherlands, eliminating lawsuits is indeed possible. Confucius also said: "If you govern them by laws and regulate them by punishments, the people will evade punishment but have no sense of shame. If you govern them by virtue and regulate them by propriety, they will have a sense of shame and moreover become good." "Western politics, knowing only politics and punishment, neglects morality and etiquette, resulting in chaos. The Netherlands, however, values etiquette, leading to a well-ordered society. Those responsible for guiding society should realize this. Some might say, 'Strict etiquette makes people too restrictive; young people should have entertainment to keep their spirits lively, which will inspire their learning and governance.' I would reply, 'Scientific research has shown the exact opposite.'

Mr. Taylor, the inventor of scientific management methods in America, studied the efficiency of employees in over thirty large factories and wrote a report stating, 'The efficiency of all factories and companies is lowest on Mondays. A detailed investigation revealed that the employees' productivity was due to dancing and revelry on Sundays! By Tuesday morning, their productivity could not be restored.' This demonstrates the prevalence of dancing in America. If factory workers are like this, schools, shops, and government officials are no exception. In summary, this leads to a significant reduction in national efficiency and substantial losses." Therefore, we can see that such entertainment not only fails to invigorate the spirit but also diminishes energy. However, there are indeed ways to improve the physical and mental capabilities of human beings. Most of these methods involve physical exercise, while psychological aspects require cultivation.

Zeng Guofan once said, "The more the spirit is used, the more it emerges; the more arduous the effort, the clearer the wisdom." He also said, "Respect strengthens the body, and diligence inspires the spirit." Respect means maintaining a vigorous spirit and daring not to slack off in anything. When Zeng Guofan was in the army, he would have breakfast with his staff at dawn and only retire after the second watch of the night; all important official documents were handwritten by him. Although political and military affairs were extremely tedious, he still maintained a regular reading schedule. Tao Kan of the Jin Dynasty carried one hundred tiles outside his house in the morning and brought them back inside at dusk. He said, "I am dedicated to the great cause of recovering the Central Plains. If my daily life is too leisurely, I fear I will not be able to handle such a great task. Therefore, I must demand of myself hard work and perseverance!" "Dong Zhongshu, a great scholar of the Han Dynasty, read by the window curtain for three years, never glancing at the garden. King Goujian of Yue endured hardship and humiliation to strengthen himself. Famous figures throughout history have achieved their knowledge and success through diligent struggle; they would never consider entertainment a method of cultivating their spirit. For willpower must be tempered and honed to become stronger. If one considers entertainment indispensable, then one's willpower is already weakened; moreover, entertainment belongs to low-level emotions, and the indulgence of the mind will be even more uncontrollable. Even factory workers experience a significant reduction in work efficiency due to this, let alone those who bear great responsibility. The above refers to physical training.

Zhuge Liang said, 'Without tranquility, one cannot achieve far-reaching goals; without detachment, one cannot clarify one's ambitions.' Tranquility means having few desires; all desires can cloud the mind, and low-level desires are even more serious." Tranquility refers to a stable mind; if the mind is preoccupied with desires, tranquility is impossible. Therefore, to preserve the intelligence and vitality of youth, avoiding these base sensory encounters is of paramount importance. Mencius said, "A person with few desires, even if there are things he does not desire, they are few. A person with many desires, even if there are things he desires, they are few." This refers to the existence of a clear mind. Simply put, a person with deep desires has shallow wisdom, while a person with few material desires has a clear mind. The above pertains to the cultivation of the mind.

These two points are the principles of self-cultivation of all sages and philosophers throughout history, both in China and abroad, and cannot be violated without exception. The testimonies and evidence cited above are all based on evidence, not empty theories! A

so-called scientific perspective means observing objective facts with a calm mind. Today's so-called materialists and new cultural figures, who advocate the wholesale acceptance of Western culture, have failed to observe objective facts attentively, also because their own desires are too great, causing them to lose their calm minds! If a subjective attitude is too strong, then a scientific perspective will completely disappear, and it wouldn't be surprising if he turned around and accused me of being outdated.
