My Hand Through Your Bodice - Part 2: Fragrant Flowers, Chapter 66: Forced into a Dilemma

"Is there really no room for negotiation?" Zhou Tong stared intently at Wen Xiu.
"There's nothing to discuss. Just take me home. What's wrong with you today? I was in a good mood before," Wenxiu muttered.
"Fine, since you're so determined, I won't say anything more. Then you can become a ghost of the Zhou family!" Zhou Tong said, suddenly reaching out and grabbing Wenxiu's neck tightly. His eyes, which had been slightly dull just now, turned ferocious, and the muscles on his face twitched incessantly.
"What are you going to do?" Wenxiu was suddenly grabbed by the neck by Zhou Tong and panicked. She tried to pull away Zhou Tong's hand that was gripping her neck.
Zhou Tong, who usually looks frail, is now incredibly strong. His hands are like two iron clamps, tightly gripping Wenxiu's neck, and tightening their grip more and more.
"Help!" Wenxiu realized that something was wrong. She tried to call for help, but Zhou Tong had her throat tightly gripped, and her vocal cords barely vibrated, her voice as faint as a fly fluttering in her ear.
The rain continued to fall, and the water on the ground accumulated more and more.
After struggling for a while, Wenxiu's body gradually went limp and she finally stopped moving. Zhou Tong slowly released his hand from Wenxiu's neck, reached out and touched her nose, then wiped the sweat from his forehead, started the car, and drove into the night.
Zhou Tong got home after 1 a.m. He went into Tongtong's room and saw that Tongtong was sleeping soundly with a rosy face. Zhou Tong went to his son's side, gently kissed his forehead, then closed the door again and went into the bedroom.
Meiling was already asleep, lying on her side, breathing evenly.
He tiptoed into bed and lay down facing Meiling. Looking at Meiling sleeping peacefully, a sudden pang of sorrow welled up in his heart. He closed his eyes, recalling the scene that had just unfolded.
He didn't know what awaited him. Perhaps the police would find Wenxiu's body tomorrow and then track him down to arrest him. The thought sent a shiver down his spine.
Yes, he was starting to regret it, but it was too late. The moment his hand gripped Wenxiu's neck, he had already embarked on a path of no return. But he had no other choice. Wenxiu had forced him into this situation, leaving him with no other option but to take the risk. But who could he blame? If he hadn't been so blinded by greed and gotten involved with Wenxiu, none of this would have happened. He felt he had let down many people: his parents, Meiling, his son, even Wenxiu's parents, and the little life in her womb.
In his dream, he felt as if a gun was pressed against the back of his head, and he was kneeling on a grassy slope. He heard someone shout, "Ready," followed by the sound of a gun being cocked, and then a crisp sound. He felt something enter his brain, and it hurt so much that he suddenly sat up in bed, his whole body soaked in sweat, and his heavy breathing startled him.
"What's wrong, Zhou Tong? Did you have a nightmare?" Meiling was woken up by Zhou Tong. Looking at Zhou Tong, who was covered in sweat, she rubbed her eyes and asked.
"No, it's nothing." Zhou Tong turned to look at Meiling in the darkness. Meiling's bright eyes gleamed slightly in the pitch-black room.
Meiling sat there for a moment, then lay back down. "Go to sleep."
"Uh," Zhou Tong responded, and slowly lay down on the bed.
A week later, Wenxiu's body was found in the canal. Just as Zhou Tong had feared, those police officers were indeed not taking the government's salary for nothing. Following the clues, they found Zhou Tong.
Zhou Tong did not hide anything and confessed the whole process of killing Wenxiu. He was later thrown into prison and executed in the autumn.
Linton was driving when he received a call from Meiling.
"Linton, Zhou Tong has been arrested."
Linton was taken aback. "What exactly happened?"
"He killed someone, one of his lovers, and it was a double tragedy; the woman was pregnant with his child."
Linton's hand holding the phone suddenly began to tremble violently, and he quickly pulled the car over to the side of the road.
"What am I going to do, Linton? What am I going to do?!" Meiling cried on the phone, leaving Linton at a loss.
On the day of the trial, Linton drove Meiling to the courthouse. The autumn wind was chilly outside, and the atmosphere in the courtroom was unusually oppressive. When the presiding judge announced that Zhou Tong was sentenced to death for intentional homicide, Meiling fainted in Linton's arms.
Zhou Tong is dead. Murderers should pay with their lives; it's only right and there's nothing more to say.
Linton accompanied Meiling to Zhou Tong's grave. He took out a lighter and lit the paper offerings, and thick smoke billowed up in the wind.
“Actually, Zhou Tong was a good husband and a good father. His death is inextricably linked to me,” Meiling said, looking at the red flames.
Linton remained silent, unsure how to comfort Meiling.
Yes, Meiling didn't need any comfort at this moment. She owed Zhou Tong something; in a sense, she was the one who harmed Zhou Tong.
The paper had burned out, and the light, floating ashes danced in the air with the wind, like black butterflies, or like Meiling's chaotic thoughts. As the yellow leaves began to fall, she trembled as well. She felt like the last leaf, which might fall from the high branch at any moment, silently and without a trace, and be swallowed by the earth.
Autumn is so short; before people can fully enjoy its crispness and abundance, the fluffy snowflakes have already fallen.
Zhang Daoyi walked out of the restaurant, looked up at the sky, and saw that it was all gray and the snowflakes were even bigger than in the afternoon.
The streets were deserted and desolate. He glanced at his watch; it was already eight o'clock in the evening.
He locked the shop and returned to his residence.
Everything was arranged. The restaurant had been transferred, his son was studying at a university in another city, all his money had been transferred to his son's name, and the letter he wrote to his younger brother had been sent, asking him to take good care of his son. Zhang Daoyi looked around the room; there was nothing left to tidy up. He changed his clothes and waited for it to get completely dark.
Night fell, and the city was covered in white snow. There were hardly any people in the streets and alleys. Occasionally, a car would pass by, but it did so cautiously and with great difficulty.
Meiling glanced at the clock on the wall; it was already ten o'clock at night. Yet, she still couldn't fall asleep. Her son, Tongtong, kept crying for his father, so she had to send him to her parents' house. Now, in the large room, she was all alone. She sat on the sofa, her eyes glazed over, her mind blank.
She got up and went to the wardrobe, opened it, and saw Zhou Tong's clothes. The suit he wore at their wedding was still hanging inside, the tie on the hanger, seemingly a little crooked. She reached out and straightened the tie, closed the wardrobe door, and sat back down on the sofa.
She turned on the TV, which was playing a heart-wrenching Korean drama. She quickly turned it off; she couldn't bear the scenes of life and death separations in the story, as it would only worsen her current mood.
