One of the Ten Forbidden Books of the Ming and Qing Dynasties: Swallow Letter

Chapter Eleven: Minister Li Escorts the Emperor to the Imperial Examinations, General Jia Gains All His Daughter's Trust
. It is said that Miss Feiyun, after recuperating, gradually recovered from her illness, much to the delight of the Old Madam. She said, "My child, your father has been preparing for the imperial examinations for almost a month. Today is also the Dragon Boat Festival; the kitchen has prepared calamus wine. Let's have a few cups under the pomegranate blossoms to celebrate the festival." The young lady replied, "My illness has only just healed, and I'm a little sensitive to the wind. I'll stay here in the main hall to keep Mother company." The Madam said, "That's fine with you." The Madam sat down, and the young lady served the wine, then sat down with her. Meixiang brought the wine over.
The mother and daughter were enjoying the flowers and wine when suddenly Minister Li appeared in the courtyard, hurriedly entering the inner hall. The lady rose, startled, and asked, "Husband, why are you in such a hurry to the yamen?" The minister replied, "It's terrible! Because of Geshu Han's defeat, that scoundrel An Lushan has broken into Tongguan. The Emperor has already made his western tour, and I have no choice but to follow him. The announcement will be made after things have settled down." The lady asked, "What should we do?" The minister instructed, "Quickly fetch my clothes to change into, tie the seal to my arm, and send my belongings ahead. Let's leave the city by carriage for now, and then catch up on horseback." He then changed his clothes, bid farewell to the lady and young lady, and said, "I entrust the affairs of the household to you; I cannot go into details."
The lady and young lady saw him off with tears in their eyes, overwhelmed with sorrow. Just then, the servant rushed in and said, "It's terrible! Master, you've just left the city gate when the bandits started burning and looting on all sides. Meixiang, quickly ask the lady and young lady to change their clothes and go to Duzhuangzi in Nanshan to wait." Then they heard gongs and shouts outside, and the lady and young lady, leading the servant and Meixiang, fled the city with the others. But let's leave that aside for now.
Meanwhile, Hua Xingyun, ever since parting with Huo Sheng, had been haunted by longing and had received no news. He pondered repeatedly, "I wonder if he has returned to Maoling, or is wandering elsewhere? The matter concerning those poems remains unresolved; I cannot find out the truth and send him a message, which only adds to my distress. Wait a moment, though. He left alone the other day, leaving his belongings here. Nothing else is important, but his poems and essays, and the writings from the examinations—these reveal the brilliant heart of a talented man. I must have him briefly review them and put them away." Just as he finished collecting them, he heard a knock at the door.
Upon opening the door, she said, "It's Master Xianyu! I'm so grateful for your help the other day." Xiansheng asked, "Yunniang, how have things been at home these past few days?" Xingyun replied, "What's wrong? I was just about to ask. Has there been any news of Huo Lang since he left?" Xiansheng laughed, "Good heavens! I knew you'd ask that right away. There's news right here." Xingyun asked happily, "Where is he now?" Xiansheng said, "Oh! You don't know? He's right over there."
Xingyun looked ahead and said, "I can't see him?" Xiansheng stepped forward and hugged her, saying, "Here he is!" He smiled and said, "Huo Xiufu and I are very close, as you know, we're the same person. And now you and I are the same." "So that's how it is!" Xingyun pushed him away, saying, "What are you talking about? How shameless of you to come here like this, shamelessly pestering me." Xiansheng said, "You are a family that values old friends over new ones, and you have your own old rules. Why be so rigid?" Xingyun said, "Don't misunderstand. Huo Lang and I made a vow before the Buddha that we would never forget each other once we became husband and wife." Xiansheng said, "If he can do it, so can I, Old Xian." Xingyun said, "You're being unreasonable! If you say you're close to Huo Lang, how come he's already trying to sow discord between us as soon as he gets up? Please! Please! Please!" Xiansheng said, "Alright, please come into the room."
Xingyun pushed Xiansheng out the door and quickly closed it behind her. Xianyu Ji angrily said, "Oh dear, how shameless! It really has come to this. Bah! Hua Xingyun, Hua Xingyun! You're still dreaming! You're still thinking about Huo Duliang, hoping to renew your old alliance, but who knew he had something to do and would never return." Suddenly, the innkeeper ran over and said, "Master Xianyu, something terrible has happened! The city of Chang'an is being burned and looted by bandits, and everyone is fleeing. You should go back to your lodgings, pack your belongings, and move around. We old men are all fleeing for our lives and can't take care of you." They heard shouts again, and the two hurriedly left.
Meanwhile, the lady and young lady of the Li family, leading Meixiang and carrying their luggage and scrolls, hurriedly left the city, following the fleeing people east and west, when they were suddenly scattered by bandits. An Lushan's vanguard, He Qiannian, having witnessed Geshu Han's defeat, seized the opportunity to rush into Tongguan. He said, "However, the Tianxiong Jiedushi, Jia Nanzhong, has led five thousand elite cavalry, pursuing us closely via the Shangnan Trail. They are truly formidable. Soldiers, we cannot linger in Chang'an. Quickly plunder the women, children, gold, and jewels, and then head towards Longxi to attack." The crowd responded, "Yes, sir!" Thus, the people of Chang'an were terrified. Some fled, some fled, and many families were separated. But we will leave that aside for now.
Now, the military governor Jia Nanzhong said, "Previously, because the rebel army was causing trouble, I led a large force to guard the Hulao Pass to prevent them from sneaking up on Chang'an. Who knew that General Geshu would suffer a defeat, and the rebels would take advantage of the situation to seize Tongguan Pass? It's truly hateful! Therefore, I led five thousand iron cavalry, marching day and night, in hot pursuit. Fortunately, we have reached the Ba Shang area. Soldiers, let's temporarily set up camp here and wait for the scouts to arrive and give us news before making further plans." The soldiers replied, "Understood."
Not long after, the sound of copper bells rang out, and the hooves of horses clashed. A soldier reported, "Sir, the scouts have arrived." The scouts entered the camp, and the military governor asked, "How is the rebel situation now? Tell me slowly." The scout said, "The government troops went ten miles to the west and confronted the rebels. They fought a fierce battle, and our troops won a great victory. He Qiannian was defeated and fled westward." Military governor Jia said, "Congratulations, congratulations!" The scouts continued, "But General Geshu..." The defeated soldiers, instead of finding refuge, abducted people's children in the city, which they considered a problem. Jia Jiedu said, "In that case, quickly send a command arrow. If any government troops abduct people or property, report it immediately; if they take in children seeking refuge, return them to their families, and report it in a register. No hiding is allowed."
After the scout left with the order, Jia Jiedu said, "This is hateful! How come the bandits fled west, yet the remnants of Geshu's camp are so disrespectful?" Just then, someone reported, "Reporting to Your Excellency, the command arrows have been delivered to all camps. Women taken in, those recognized, have been returned. There are only two women among them: one is said to be a young lady from a wealthy family, but no one recognizes her; the other is a disabled old woman with nowhere to be taken in. Please, Your Excellency, give your decree!" Jia Jiedu said, "In that case, first summon the young lady from the wealthy family. I need to ask her background before releasing her."
The soldiers obeyed and summoned the woman. Jia Jiedu glanced at her and said, "Judging from this woman's demeanor, she is indeed from your household. Where do you live? What is your family? Please explain in detail, and I will investigate and send you back." Miss Feiyun blushed and tearfully said, "To be honest, my father is the current Minister of Rites, Li, whose given name is Andao." Jia Jiedu exclaimed in surprise, "Ah! So you are my brother Li's daughter? Brother Li! I have always pitied you, Bodao, for having no son, and now your young daughter has suffered such misfortune. Miss, your father and I are very close classmates. I sent him a letter this spring to inquire after him, do you know that?"
Feiyun thought for a moment and said, "Sir, could you perhaps be Jiedu Jia?" "What?" Jia Jiedu said, "Indeed." Feiyun said, "This spring, someone sent to inquire about my father and received a scroll of Wu Daozi's Guanyin painting. I still remember it." Jia Jiedu said, "That must be my brother Li Nian's daughter. Now, with the army in disarray and your father still on the front lines, you are all alone. Even if I send you back to your residence, there will be no one to take care of you. I intend to take you as my daughter and send you back after the situation is pacified. What do you think?" Feiyun said, "I have heard my father say that he and you are as close as siblings; seeing you today is like seeing my father! But this kindness and virtue is impossible to repay!" She then bowed four times and stood up. Jia Jiedu accepted the greeting and said, "But the army is short of a woman to serve us. What should we do? Your men reported earlier that there is an old woman; please summon her." The servant replied, "Understood."
A short while later, a hunchbacked old woman carrying a bundle of scrolls approached, bowed, and stood up to see Feiyun, saying, "Ah! This is Miss Li! What are you doing here? I was just looking for you. I witnessed Meixiang being murdered among the rebels, and she left this bundle here to give to you." Feiyun wept upon hearing this. Jia Jiedu said, "So you recognize this old woman?" Feiyun replied, "She's a healer; I've used her medicine before." Jia Jiedu said, "In that case, she can stay in the army to keep you company." The hunchbacked old woman thanked him. Jia Jiedu said, "You've had a hard journey amidst the chaos; come and rest in our rooms! I'll go to the front camp to inspect the troops." He then left.
Meng Ma also returned to her room with the young lady. What did the two say to each other? We'll find out in the next chapter.
Chapter Twelve: The Lady Mistakenly Recognizes Her Own Daughter; The Scholar Invites a New Guest to His Bedchamber
When Miss Li arrived at the room, she asked, "Mother Meng, I felt much better after taking your medicine the other day, but who would have thought we'd be separated by such chaos and meet here again?" The old woman replied, "Don't mention it again, it's a long story! Miss, Meixiang told me in detail about your illness." The young lady asked, "What's the reason?" The old woman said, "It's because of the painting." The young lady smiled slightly. Meng Po said, "To tell you the truth, there really is a Mr. Huo in Maoling named Huo Duliang who came to ask me to examine his illness." The young lady asked, "What kind of person is Huo Duliang?" Meng Po smiled and said, "That's the first thing on your mind, and it just slipped out without you realizing it. You ask what he is like? His appearance is almost exactly like the one in this painting. Also, your letter was carried away by a swallow, and on the Qujiang River embankment, it landed right in front of him, neither east nor west, neither high nor low, and he picked it up." The young lady said, "That's really strange." Meng Po said, "When I was examining him, he took it out and asked me to return it to you in exchange for the wrong copy of 'Spring Beauty.' When I had it with me, I never knew it would become a source of trouble. Those barbarian soldiers captured me, saying that I had colluded with him to pull strings and pull some kind of strings. It took a lot of trouble before they let me go." The young lady said, "Is that so?" "You've troubled your mother so much. Where is Scholar Huo now?" Meng Po said, "Scholar Huo heard that I had been captured and fled in terror."
Upon hearing this, the young lady burst into tears and said, "Since he's wandering, it's hard to say what fate holds." Meng Po smiled and said, "But there's something else I can't tell you." The young lady asked, "What is it that I can't tell you?" Meng Po said, "Scholar Huo is quite the ladies' man. He's having an affair with a courtesan named Hua Xingyun. This painting, 'Spring Beauty,' was painted for him. Hua Xingyun looks just like you, but you mistook her for someone else and thought it was painted for you." The young lady said, "No wonder when I first saw her, seeing how charming she was, I guessed she was a courtesan." Meng Po said, "Young lady, you're already lovesick and haven't recovered yet. Don't get jealous and ruin your health." The two laughed at each other, but that's another story.
Meanwhile, Hua Xingyun, carrying her bundle and the painting, also fled with the others. She said, “Ah! We’ve reached Xingqing Pond. Heavens! I’ve only walked a few miles since leaving Chang’an, why can’t I walk anymore? Let me sit here in the grass. Huo Lang! Huo Lang! Where are you now? In this chaos, you’ve abandoned me here alone, how miserable I am.”
Just as she was thinking, she suddenly saw an old woman approaching in the distance. Who was this woman? It was Lady Li. She called out, “Feiyun, where have you gone? Even Meixiang has disappeared without a trace.” Suddenly she looked up and said, “Ah! Look, sitting on the grassy slope ahead, that’s clearly my girl. Thank God.” When she reached her, Xingyun rose and bowed. The lady said, "Don't bow, don't bow, my child. You, as a young lady, have never suffered such hardship. I'm so sorry. Where is Meixiang?" Xingyun said, "Mother, I don't understand what you're saying." The lady said in surprise, "What do you mean? You're not a young lady?" She looked at him more closely, "You are clearly my Feiyun!" Xingyun said, "I am not Feiyun. My humble surname is Hua, and my given name is Xingyun. I live by the Qujiang River. I am a child from a poor family. I lost my parents when I was young. Mother, have you mistaken me for someone else?" The lady said, "Her voice is indeed somewhat different."
Then she started to cry, saying, "How come your face is so similar? Only the rosy cheeks are different. My young lady, to tell you the truth, I am the husband of Lord Li of the Ministry of Rites." I evacuated with Miss Feiyun, but they were scattered by bandits. My daughter didn't know where she was. I saw that you looked like him, so I called you my daughter. The old man's eyesight is wrong, so I'm so offended! Xingyun said: "It turns out she is an old lady, disrespectful!" Disrespectful! After saluting, he turned his back and said, "His daughter's name is Li Feiyun." Oh, I remembered, the person who inscribed the painting was Feiyun. Mother Meng once said that he looked just like the slave family, so the old lady accepted her mistake. The lady said, "My dear wife, when I see you, it's like seeing my daughter. You can stay with me all the way. When you get home, you will become my own daughter. What do you think?" "Xingyun said: "Thank you, old lady, I'm afraid my family won't have such a blessing! Then he fell down and bowed down. His wife helped him up and said, "It's getting late, so we have to walk next to each other."
Just as they were walking hand in hand, they suddenly heard the sound of a gong. Madam and Xingyun were startled and said, "Look at the commotion of people and horses, and they were crushed by the rebel army again." "You know, it's Li Shangshu who has returned. The master gave an order: "Servants, bring me two women from that grassy slope." The lady stepped forward, and the minister recognized her, saying, "Ah! Why are you and my daughter here?" The lady wept and said, "In the chaos of the army, my daughter got lost." The minister said, "My daughter is right beside you now, how can you say she got lost?" The lady said, "This is not my daughter." The minister said, "If it's not my daughter, then who is it?" The lady said, "My husband, we met her on the road. Her surname is Hua, and her name is Xingyun. She looks just like my child." After saying this, she cried again, "My daughter was separated from us by the chaotic soldiers at the Qingchi intersection, and I don't know where she went."
Upon hearing this, the minister burst into tears, saying, "This is heartbreaking!" Only then did Xingyun step forward and bow. Upon seeing her, the Minister cried again, "How can she look so much like a girl? Since that's the case, let's adopt this girl as our own and go find Feiyun." The Lady said, "That's what I thought too, and she's already agreed. Husband, you've only been in Lingwu for a few days, why are you back already?" The Minister said, "After seeing the Emperor, he sent me back to offer sacrifices at the suburban temples and mountains. How could I have known that my family would be destroyed and my child lost? Isn't this a sin from my past life?"
Xingyun knelt and kowtowed again, saying, "I'm a wanderer with no roots, and I wish to be your concubine. I'm deeply grateful for your kindness in treating me like a daughter. What an honor! Father, don't worry now. When you can't find my sister, quickly write down notices and post them along the way. She's probably not far from Chang'an." The Minister said, "Yes! Madam, take your daughter home first, and I'll return to the manor later." Let's leave that aside for now. Meanwhile,
Magistrate Qin Ruoshui of Yang County, due to the An Lushan Rebellion, led his men to guard the city, which was very strict. He constantly advised and worked tirelessly. One day, he gave some instructions from the city wall, saying, "Be careful here, I'm going down to rest." Everyone replied, "We understand." Suddenly, a scholar was seen walking from afar. Who could it be? It turned out to be Huo Xiufu, who had fled here. He said, “Since leaving Chang’an, I have escaped the net of treachery, but my fate has been fraught with misfortune, encountering danger at every turn. Bandits roamed the roads, and government troops plundered. Fortunately, I was poor and alone, which saved my life, and I have made my way to Yangcheng.” The city was heavily guarded, so he couldn’t act rashly. He asked the man on the rampart, “Brother on the rampart, is your county’s Lord Qin on the rampart?”
The man on the rampart heard him and shouted, “Where are you from? Why are you asking about Lord Qin?” Huo Sheng replied, “Please inform him that a student from Maoling named Huo has come to pay his respects.” The men said, “Judging from his appearance, he is refined and cultured. Informing him should be no problem.” They then went down the rampart and reported, “Sir, there is a student below the rampart named Huo, from Maoling, who wishes to see you.” Magistrate Qin understood and said, “Quickly, pull him up.”
The men then lowered the ropes and hoisted Huo Sheng onto the rampart, where the two met. Master Qin said, "My dear friend, you were in Chang'an preparing for the imperial examinations, how did you suddenly end up here?" Huo Sheng replied, "It's a long story." He then briefly recounted how he had mistakenly entered a wealthy household to paint the "Spring Scene," accidentally picked up a letter, and leaked the story, leading to disaster. Magistrate Qin said, "I don't know the details of what you just said. Let's go to the yamen together and discuss it in detail. I'm glad you are a man of both literary and military talent. Since you've been wandering around for a while, I can consult you on many matters." The two then returned to the yamen.
A swift rider approached from the city wall. The guards, bows drawn, asked, "Who are you?" The rider replied, "Don't fire! I am the first messenger sent by Marshal Jia. I have a command token and a fire tally here. Instruct all the prefectures and counties to prepare provisions quickly. I will personally lead five thousand iron cavalry to pursue and annihilate the rebels. I will arrive here tonight, without delay!"
The soldiers received the token, and Lord Qin verified it before issuing it, saying, "It is indeed Commander Jia's first messenger. Tell him that all provisions are prepared. Guards, ask him again, is Commander Jia from Xingzhou?" The soldiers, understanding the situation, replied, "He is indeed from Xingzhou." Lord Qin said to Huo Sheng, "Congratulations! Congratulations! Commander Jia is a fellow townsman and a close friend of mine. With him here, our isolated city is safe. Let us drink and reminisce."
It was just as the poem goes: "
I trim the silver candle by the west window, the sound of the reed pipe drifts out in the moonlight. "
What will Commander Jia do upon arriving? Let's find out in the next chapter.
Chapter Thirteen: Joining the Army and Writing a Proclamation Strike at the Bandits; The Military Governor Appreciates Talent and Grants a Marriage Agreement
It is said that Jia Jiedu, dressed in military attire, led his troops to the tent. He sat down and said, “I personally led my cavalry to □yang. Fortunately, Magistrate Qin Ruoshui, a fellow villager, hosted a banquet for me, and we talked all night until dawn. Since I needed a secretary in my staff, I asked him to inquire about hiring one. He said that there happens to be a student in the yamen, a scholar from Maoling, who is both talented and resourceful. He has been studying here and we can make good use of him. I will send someone to invite him to the front lines so he can see for himself and decide whether to retain him.” A man under the canopy, holding a document, kowtowed and said, “This humble official is from the county. Reporting to Your Excellency: Magistrate Qin has ordered to distribute provisions to the various camps outside the city. The scholar from Maoling I mentioned to Your Excellency last night has been sent here by my servant. He is currently outside the gate and dares not enter.” Commander Jia said, “I troubled Your Excellency last night. There’s no need for you to come today. I will immediately ride to the ten-mile pavilion to meet you. Please invite the scholar from the yamen in.” The messenger departed.
Now, when Huo Sheng arrived, he had been thinking along the way: "I have endured many hardships to reach [location name]; and I was fortunate enough to be recommended by Teacher Qin to serve in the staff of Governor Jia. Someone sent to invite me to meet him, but I wonder how that matter will end? The other day I heard that those people were going to send a letter to my hometown to arrest me. So yesterday I told Teacher Qin to tell Governor Jia not to mention my name. If they ask about my place of origin or surname today, I must make sure to answer them. I'll just change my name to Bian Wuji."
Hearing the summons, he had no choice but to enter the tent and bow. Jia Gong said, "Sir, you are a man of great talent. I am honored by your presence. May I ask your esteemed name?" Huo Sheng replied, "My surname is Bian, and my given name is Wuji. I am mediocre and incompetent, and I am deeply ashamed to have been recommended by you." Jia Gong said, "There is no need for such modesty. Sir, although An Lushan has fled to Chang'an, he is now eyeing Longyou. I have only five thousand cavalry. How can we defeat such a large force?" Huo Sheng said, "In my humble opinion, although the rebels are fierce and aggressive, they are like beasts. Your Excellency should hold Longzhou firmly and remain cautious. We must see that An Lushan is cruel and treacherous, and has lost the hearts of the people." Even his adopted son and illegitimate son harbor resentment. It would be better to write a secret proclamation, put it in a wax pellet, and send it to a trusted confidant to convey to the emperor, promising a redemption for his father and a reward for his service. These wolves in sheep's clothing are sure to devour each other. With this one document, we are far better than a thousand armies, able to recover the Hehuang region and welcome back the emperor—a feat unparalleled. I urge Your Excellency
to consider this carefully.” Upon hearing this, Jia Gong bowed and thanked him, saying, “Your wise suggestion is truly admirable. This proclamation will require your assistance.” Huo Sheng replied, “I will take care of it.” He picked up the brush and wrote it in a short time. Lord Jia took the document, read it once, and said, "The proclamation is excellent. Send a trusted confidant to secretly deliver it to this traitor. If we succeed thanks to your brilliant strategy, I will certainly report this to the emperor and request that you be given a high position. Keeping him in the front camp now will allow me to consult with him day and night." He then ordered the flag officer, "Quickly allocate supplies and servants to serve Military Advisor Bian in the front camp. Do not neglect him!" The others responded, "Yes, sir." Huo Sheng talked with Lord Jia for a while longer before taking his leave and returning to the front camp.
Meanwhile, Lady Li often missed her daughter, and said to Xingyun, "Since the chaos of war, I have grown old and ill, and I rely on you to be with me day and night, serving me. But since we parted, I have searched everywhere for Feiyun, but there has been no trace of her. How can I not weep? Look, autumn is deepening, the wind is rustling through the window, how desolate it is. I wonder where she is now? How can I not worry?" Xingyun said, "Mother, the other day the rebel soldiers were causing trouble, but it didn't last long before they calmed down. I heard that the military governor has issued strict orders, personally inquiring about the lost children. My sister must have found her. Mother, please..." "Don't worry," the lady said. "Every year at this time, it's the season for giving out new clothes, but alas, the things remain while the person is gone. How can I bear the moon rising over the paulownia tree, the sound of the pestle striking the ground, where can one not feel sorrow? I'll go in and rest, my child, come in a little later." Xingyun said, "I understand." He sent the lady in and then said, "Don't talk to another sorrowful person, for talking about sorrow is enough to kill you. My mother only knows her worries, how could she know that I am not without my own worries? But the other day on the way, in my haste, I put this Guanyin painting in my bundle, I wonder what happened to it?" He couldn't help but take it out and hang it up. Unfolding the painting, he said, "I'm glad it's undamaged. Let me burn incense and offer my thanks. There's also Huo Lang's writing in the bundle, I need to check it with him again. Ah! I'm glad that the manuscript and the writings from the scene were not lost. It's getting late, I should pack up and go to my room." It was truly:
How much longing and yearning in one night, even the ends of the earth are not far enough.
Meanwhile, several patrolmen under An Lushan's command said, "Guys, it's so frosty and windy here. The King is enjoying himself with lamb and fine wine, surrounded by beautiful women, while we suffer in this cold and desolate place. It's almost midnight, the scouts have all passed, let's buy a jug and drink it all away." The patrolmen drank merrily, but that's another story.
Meanwhile, Li Zhu'er, having received a proclamation from Marshal Jia, was ordered by the young general to assassinate the old traitor in the camp. He went with the officer to the camp gate. Hearing the watchtower's drum strike the third watch, and seeing the patrolling soldiers lying drunk on the ground, Li Zhu'er happily said to the officer, "The thief's life is over now! I'll go in, and you can wait here quietly. If I kill the old thief, I'll throw his head down from here, and you can catch it and report your success." The officer said, "That's right."
Not long after Li Zhu'er left, he suddenly called out quietly, "Officer! Officer! The old thief's head is here!" Then he jumped down and said, "The head is here." The officer said, "How can you tell it's the old thief's head? There's no proof." Li Zhu'er said, "The old thief always kept the money given to the Imperial Concubine for her baby's first bath tightly to his chest. I took it and tied it to my hair; that's proof. You can take advantage of this dim moonlight and rush to Longzhou to report to Marshal Jia. I'll set fire to the camp to scatter all their soldiers." The officer said, "Excellent." He then put the head in his bag, whipped his horse, and rode away. Li Zhu'er set fire to the camp and shouted, "The central camp is on fire! Why aren't you putting it out? Why are you still sleeping here?" The patrolmen were startled awake and exclaimed, "It's terrible! It's terrible! How could such a large fire break out in the central camp? Everyone, get up and put out the fire!" They then hurriedly left, and we will not go into details about that.
Now, let's talk about Huo Sheng. He had offered his advice to Jia Gong, but his whereabouts were still unknown, which puzzled him. He said, "I changed my name and surname, fortunately without anyone noticing. But after the chaos in Chang'an, I don't know how Hua Xingyun is doing. There's no news at all. Although I have kept the letter from Miss Li here, I don't know where she is. Look at the yellow flowers, the fallen leaves, it's so depressing."
Just as he was hesitating, Jia Gong came over and said, "Mr. Bian, a messenger arrived this morning. Sure enough, the letter arrived. That wicked son, An Qingxu, secretly sent his trusted man, Li Zhu'er, to assassinate Lushan. The official has already presented the head." "Fortunately, the great evil has been eliminated, and the remaining troubles can be swept away; all this is thanks to you
, sir! Today, I hereby appoint you as a military advisor in the army, and I have already submitted a memorial to the throne. You will soon be promoted. Attendants, bring me your official hat and sash." Huo Sheng put on his hat and sash, bowed to thank Governor Jia, and said, "This is the great fortune of the court and the esteemed reputation of Your Excellency. What merit have I, a mere mortal, had to deserve such a generous offer?" Governor Jia said, "What are you saying?" He then thought to himself, "I see that Bian Sheng is skilled in both literature and martial arts, and possesses both talent and good looks. I might as well marry the daughter of the Li family." "He'll be a good son-in-law in the future, and Brother Li will surely not blame me for acting on my own initiative." He then said to Huo Sheng, "I have one more thing to tell you: I have a young daughter who is with the army. She is of marriageable age but has not yet chosen a husband. I would be honored to take on this task and not hinder it. Tomorrow is an auspicious day for our wedding." Huo Sheng said, "I am deeply grateful for your kindness, but I have a previous marriage pact with a woman from Qujiang. How could I possibly change my mind and break my promise?"
The military governor, Jia, said, "You have never mentioned having a family before; this is clearly an excuse." "I have no face left." Huo Sheng said, "We have indeed made a pact, how could I refuse?" Jia Jiedu said, "I think after the chaos in Chang'an, the fate of this woman is unknown. We will find her and bring her back in the future. As I said today, my daughter is willing to be treated equally with him, regardless of age." Huo Sheng said, "Let me think about it some more." Jia Jiedu said, "No need to think about it." He called to his men, "Instruct the army to prepare a feast with drums and music tomorrow, and have the best men serve her." After saying this, he took his leave and turned away. Huo Sheng said, "If I don't agree, I will betray Jia Gong's kindness; if I agree, I will break my previous pact. Jia Gong only agreed to be treated equally, which is reasonable. Let's go with it, it should be fine, let him be."
How will they get married? Let's find out in the next chapter.
Chapter Fourteen: The Handsome Young Man's Wedding in the Army, the Old Camel Woman's Plea .
It is said that Meng Po was fortunate that Jia Jiedu stayed in the camp to accompany the young lady, thus saving her life. He said, “Recently, Master Jia wanted to arrange for Miss to marry into the family of Military Advisor Bian. Miss was reluctant and asked me to persuade her. That Military Advisor is exceptionally handsome and talented, and a perfect match for Miss. Tell him not to refuse. I think even Miss's life was saved by Master Jia; otherwise, in the chaos of the army, who knows where Miss would be now? He has good intentions, why be so stubborn? I must go and persuade him.” Upon seeing Miss, he said, “Master Jia instructed me to tell Miss that she is the only one in his army. He often has to inspect various camps, making it inconvenient for him to take care of her. Master Li is also missing, so he has no choice but to go along with the plan. There is a Military Advisor Bian who is of suitable age and appearance, and is talented in both literature and martial arts. He intends for her to marry into the family. Yesterday, he told Miss that you had not agreed, and asked me to persuade you to agree.”
Upon hearing this, the young lady burst into tears, saying, "Mother, I have wandered far and wide, and I am deeply grateful to Master Jia for taking me in. How could I dare to disobey his words? But my dear parents are nowhere to be found, how could I have the leisure to take in a husband? Besides, the six rites have not been completed, and there is no matchmaker, so I am hesitant." Meng Po said, "This is a once-in-a-lifetime event, there is no need to hesitate. Master Jia himself said that he and my husband are like brothers, and he treats you like his own daughter. Because the prospective son-in-law is excellent, this opportunity should not be missed, and he would never ruin your life's happiness. He is the one who strongly advocates for the marriage, which is essentially the matchmaker. Young lady, please follow my advice and agree." The young lady said, "Mother, since that is the case, I can only leave it to Master Jia's decision." Meng Po said, "Then go and report back to Master Jia. But I am a..." "Being disabled and single, it's inconvenient for me to come in tomorrow, my wedding night. I'll see you the day after tomorrow. I'll get back to you now." The young lady said, "Mother Meng is gone, but my heart is heavy. First, I can't bear to marry without my parents' knowledge; second, the person in that scroll of 'Spring Beauty' must be severed from now on, with no hope of ever seeing them again. Since our fate was sealed here, how could that painting be wrongly placed in my possession? I wrote the inscription, but how did the swallows carry it to Huo Lang? These two strange things are now just empty promises. I can't help but take out the painting and look at it again."
After looking at it for a long time, she said sadly, "Huo Lang, Huo Lang! If we are to meet again, it will only be in the next life; 'Spring Beauty,' 'Spring Beauty,' I bid you farewell today, and will never be able to admire it again." It is truly:
Let's not say that our fate in this life has ended, but let's hope to form a bond in the next life.
The next day, Master Jia instructed, "The auspicious hour has arrived. Summon the best man to officiate the ceremony and invite Miss to marry Military Advisor Bian. But there's one more thing: today is an auspicious day, so tell that old woman with the hunchback, who is single and disabled, to excuse herself." Those around him responded, "Understood." The best man, adorned with flowers and red ribbons, was summoned and began the ceremony. The two came out, bowed to heaven and earth, and then exchanged vows. Master Jia ordered them to be led to the bridal chamber. After the nuptial cup ceremony, candles were hung high, and the couple sat down. Huo Sheng, upon seeing Miss's face, was startled. Ah! It was clearly Yun Niang! He blurted out, "Miss, could you perhaps be Hua…?"
He stopped abruptly. Turning away, he said, "Don't be so presumptuous! How could Yunniang be here! If it were her, she wouldn't be so shy, but her appearance is just like hers." He looked again carefully and exclaimed, "I almost mistook her! Yunniang had a peach-pink petal on her cheek, but this one doesn't. I remember the old doctor saying that Miss Li looked like Yunniang, but now this Miss Jia has appeared—the third one!"
Miss Li also stole a glance at the military advisor and said, "Bian Lang seems like someone I know every day." Thinking for a moment, she said, "That's it! The one in the red dress in the painting looks just like him. But that person's name is Du Liang, not Bian." Just as she was pondering this, Huo Sheng said, "It's late, Miss, let's sleep together." Indeed:
Under the glow of candlelight and oil lamps, they met before the lamp—was it not him?
The two of them spent the night in blissful intimacy, but that's another story.
Now, with the An Lushan rebellion quelled and the people gradually returning to peace, the examination results were still pending. Suddenly, news arrived that the results would be announced today, and all the messengers waited in front of the Ministry of Rites. The official carrying the list approached, and soon it was displayed high above. The person copying the names shouted, "First place, first place: Xianyu Ji, from Fufeng, Shaanxi. So the top scholar is here! Go to the Fufeng Guild Hall to report! Children, here's the slip of paper. Hurry up and go!"
However, Xianyu Ji, due to the turmoil of war, had left his old residence in Yaodian and moved to the Fufeng Guild Hall. He had inquired with the Ministry of Rites and learned that the list would be released at dawn. He anxiously wondered, "Why is there still no sign of him? Listen to the magpies in the trees, they're chirping so happily!" Suddenly, a group of messengers ran up and asked, "Is that Master Xianyu?" Xianyu asked, "Where is he ranked?" The messengers replied, "He's the top scholar." Xianyu was delighted and said, "Quickly, bring me the slip of paper." The messengers presented it.
Xianyu Ji, seeing that it was true, said, "Come and drink a cup of celebratory wine with me; the reward will be generous." Another group of people, carrying official hats and ribbons, saw Xianyu Ji, kowtowed, and said, "We are here to welcome Scholar Xianyu to the Qionglin Banquet." Xianyu Ji said, "Get up, receive your reward, and come with me to the banquet." Now, let's leave aside the story of Xianyu Ji, who cheated by changing his name and became the top scholar, believing it to be his due, and was overjoyed.
After her wedding, Miss Li was somewhat displeased, saying, "Since being adopted by Master Jia, who treated me like his own daughter and even found me a good husband, I am still far from my parents' side. On our wedding night, I feel quite lonely. Today, I can only reluctantly dress and do my hair. You see, I've become thinner these past few days. I look closely at Bian Lang's face, and he is just like the man in the painting, but his surname is Huo, not Bian. I want to tell him about our family history, but as husband and wife, I'm still a little shy."
Huo Sheng secretly said, "I look closely at the bride's face, and she is exactly like Hua Xingyun. Last night under the lamp, I almost said it wrong. Is there really such a resemblance? I remember the old doctor saying, 'Miss Li also resembles Yunniang. Perhaps she is, but only slightly. How can there be someone like Miss Jia, so indistinguishable?'" Seeing Feiyun, he said, "Madam, you can do your hair and do your hair here." Feiyun said, "That's right." So they sat down and chatted.
Meanwhile, Meng Po, who had avoided the wedding last night, came out this morning and said, "Last night was Miss's wedding. As I mentioned, I avoided the auspicious time and didn't go to the bridal chamber. I heard that the groom, Military Advisor Bian, is indeed handsome and the bride is beautiful.
Master Jia likes him very much. Today, I think there's no problem, so I'll go to Miss's room to see him." Upon entering and seeing the groom, she exclaimed in surprise, "You're Master Huo! How dare you barge into Miss's bridal chamber like this! What kind of etiquette is this? If Military Advisor Bian sees this, things will get complicated!" She pushed Huo Sheng, saying, "This is no joke! Get out! Get out!"
Miss Feiyun was also surprised and said, "Mother, this is Military Advisor Bian, why do you call him Master Huo?" Meng Po said, "Miss, I'm not mistaken, this is Huo Duliang. He asked me to treat his illness." "Master Huo, I suffered so much for you over a poem, you have no idea!" The young lady said, "That's strange! If you're Huo Lang, how come you're surnamed Bian?" Huo Sheng smiled and said, "I am indeed Huo Duliang. There's a reason I changed my surname, let me tell you slowly." The young lady said, "I don't believe it! If it's Huo Duliang, Mother, you said I had a poem that a swallow carried away, that he found it, where is it now?" Huo Sheng said, "I did receive a poem, indeed carried by a swallow, but it was written by Li Feiyun, it has nothing to do with you, Madam." He
took out the poem and handed it to the young lady, saying, "This was written by Miss Li, please take a closer look." Meng Po said, "Master Huo, are you still dreaming! This is Miss Li, named Feiyun, where is there another Miss Li?" Huo Sheng said, "She's Master Jia's daughter, how come she has the surname Li for no reason?" Feiyun smiled but remained silent. After a moment's hesitation, she said, "Mother, please explain it to him in detail." Meng Po said, "In the chaos of war, they mistook the young lady for their own daughter." Huo Sheng said, "Pah! I must be dreaming! My lady was actually adopted by Master Jia. There's a living, breathing Li Feiyun right here, yet I still yearn for you day and night? My lady, I mistakenly sent you a painting called 'Spring Beauty.' Is it still here?" The young lady took out the painting and said, "It's here now. Please tell me in detail why you changed your name." Huo Sheng then recounted the painting "Spring Beauty" and the letter "Picking Swallows." The young lady said, "That's only the first half of the story. I don't understand why you changed your surname to Bian. Please tell me." "
Huo Sheng then told Meng Po about exchanging the poem for 'Spring Beauty,' but someone leaked the news, accusing me of colluding with others, and I was extorted by the barbarians, nearly getting caught, so I changed my surname to escape. My wife, tell me about the lost painting too." Fei Yun recounted the scene of losing the painting. The two explained everything clearly, becoming exceptionally affectionate. Huo Sheng instructed, "My wife, Mother, when you're outside the bridal chamber, don't reveal that I'm Master Huo; it's safer to call me Military Advisor Bian." Meng Po replied, "I understand."
Only the three of them knew the truth; the rest will be revealed in the next chapter.
Chapter Fifteen: The Top Scholar Xian Yu Privately Visits His Teacher, Hua Dihua's Adopted Daughter Exposes Her Flaw Before Her Father
. It is said that Minister Li of the Ministry of Rites said, "I am honored to be in charge of the imperial examinations, and my assessments of the papers have been accurate and have been submitted long ago. Recently, due to the execution of An Lushan, the victory at Wugong, and the ascension of the emperor to the throne in Lingwu, peace has been restored. Therefore, the announcement of the results has been made to complete this grand ceremony. The results were posted yesterday, and according to tradition, the top scholar should come to pay his respects this morning. Your Excellency, when the new top scholar's disciple, Xian Yu, arrives, inform him of the arrival."
The crowd responded, "We understand." Then Xianyu Ji, dressed in his official robes and riding a horse, arrived, saying, "Where did this come from? I, Xianyu Ji, was doing that sort of thing, hoping to just have my name on the list and I'd be rich. Who knew I'd snatch first place! Joy! Joy! Attendants, today we should pay our respects to the chief examiner, Master Li." The servant reported, "We've arrived at Master Li's gate; we've dismounted and are waiting." The official presented the invitation, and the gatekeeper received it, saying, "According to custom, on our first audience with the master, the steward and servants, we should all pay our respects. Please inform your master that he will grant us an audience." The servant replied. Xianyu Ji said, "Servant, tell them that this year's top scholar is truly talented and different from the others; even if it weren't for Master Li, someone else would have passed. After I take office, I'll reward him along with the people of the Grand Secretary."
The servant then told the gatekeeper, who said, "Reward him! Why are you acting like this, so ignorant of the times, putting on airs in front of your master's door? But the master has instructed us to pass on the message." A little while later, someone came out and said, "Please come in." Xianyu Ji entered the courtyard, paid his respects, and was offered a seat. Xianyu Ji said, "This humble student is honored to be first in your honor, but I fear my inferiority may tarnish your reputation." Minister Li said, "Your esteemed friend is highly talented; you should be first in your honor. I am deeply grateful for your favor. What a great achievement!" The teacher and student were talking in the courtyard when the lady and young lady behind them, hearing that the new top scholar had arrived, secretly peeked from behind the screen to see who this person was. Xing Yunduan glanced at him, then was secretly startled and went inside.
Xianyu Ji, knowing the story of the inscribed letter, indulged in wishful thinking and deliberately said, "I have something to report: To be honest, teacher, I am currently unmarried. Now, many of you esteemed gentlemen have daughters of suitable marriageable age. I humbly request your assistance in arranging their marriages, so that I may also be granted a place in your household." Minister Li replied, "I will keep an eye on things." Xianyu Ji took his leave, bowed three times, and left. Minister Li said, "I will not see you off." He then ordered the servants to quickly invite the lady and young lady out, as he had something to say. Upon receiving the news, the lady and her daughter came out to meet him. The Minister said, "This year's top scholar is a student of mine. His talent and character are both excellent. When we met earlier, I asked him if he had a wife yet. I wish to arrange for this girl to marry him. What do you think?" The lady replied, "This is a matter of great importance, and I leave it to you, my husband. Where is this year's top scholar from? What is his name?" The Minister said, "His name is Xianyu Ji, and he is from Fufeng." Xingyun exclaimed, "So it is Xianyu Ji!" He then fell into deep thought.
The Minister asked, "My child, what are you pondering?" Xingyun replied, "Father, this man is a rogue, illiterate, how can you expect him to be the top scholar?" The Minister exclaimed in surprise, "You're just a girl, you don't concern yourself with worldly affairs. How do you know he's illiterate and a bad person? It's laughable!" Xingyun said, "To be honest, Father, I have a cousin named Huo Duliang, a learned scholar, and we were classmates. That's why I know his character." Minister Li said, "I don't care if he's illiterate, a bad person, or a classmate of your cousin. Just look at how beautifully he wrote his exam paper, and I'll give him the top spot. Can your father's eyes really be so wrong?" "Land?" Xingyun said, "Xianyu Ji's writing is excellent, but it's definitely not his work." The Minister said, "This year's examination is extremely strict, the examination hall is locked. If it wasn't him, then who did it?"
He angrily took out the vermilion scroll and handed it to his wife: "Let him see. Although he's illiterate, those examiners, with all those circles so elaborate, presented it. Am I wrong? Are all those examiners wrong?" Xingyun took the scroll, looked at it carefully, and said, "Father, I know a few characters, but every sentence in this text is my cousin Huo Duliang's." The Minister said, "That's ridiculous! It's Huo Duliang's, how do you know?" Xingyun said, "My cousin was ill, and after the examination..." Then he returned to his ancestral home in Fufeng. His books and belongings were all left at my house, and I still keep his manuscripts here. Father, if you don't believe me, let me take them out and I'll see." He went into the room to retrieve them and said, "Father, please take a look."
The Minister took them, read them, and said, "Indeed, not a single word is wrong. It seems I've been misled by this dog." He stamped his foot and said, "How could the imperial examination be so careless, allowing him to deceive us? Since it's your cousin's essay, each candidate has their own examination room; how could he have copied it? It's hard to understand." Xingyun secretly thought, "No wonder he kept asking Huo Lang about his examination room number after the exam; there must be a reason." He turned around and said, "Father, let's see his examination paper; what's his examination room number?" The Minister said: "That's true." He looked at it and said, "It's the character '昃' (Ze)." Xingyun said, "My cousin said it was the character '日' (Ri), but he must have secretly altered it, adding strokes to the bottom of '日' (Ri)."
The Minister looked again and said, "Look, the '日' (Ri) on top of '昃' is too big, and the strokes below look like they were added. It's clear there was some kind of tampering. Luckily you're clever enough to expose this fraud; I almost wrongly accused you. How annoying! How annoying!" The lady said, "My lord, don't worry. Tomorrow, call that bachelor over and give him another interview. If he's indeed a commoner, then we can deal with him accordingly." The Minister said, "My lady is right. Let's test him like that." It is just as the poem goes: "
On the banks of the Heavenly Weaver Bridge, the autumn shuttle is being trimmed; only the Yellow Maiden can cross the river.
Let's leisurely pour the jade cup at the top, still worried about the broken clay pot at the bottom."
Preparing for the re-examination the next day, Xianyu Ji did not mention it.
Meanwhile, Jia Jiedushi sat idly in his camp and said to Huo Sheng, "Military Advisor Bian, the other day I issued a proclamation to execute the traitor An, and I immediately reported it. Why haven't I received any news of the imperial decree these past few days?" Huo Sheng replied, "It should arrive sooner or later." Suddenly, a messenger returned to the camp and kowtowed to the emperor. Jia Jiedushi asked, "You've returned, messenger? What is the decree?" The messenger replied, "Upon receiving the memorial, I heard that His Majesty was overjoyed and that an imperial decree would be issued. Congratulations, sir, and Lord Bian, both of you have received this favor. The decree is here." Jia Jiedushi took it and read it; it was the imperial decree:
"An Lushan, the traitor, defied Heaven and defied the common people, and brought about his own capture and execution. Thanks to the loyalty and diligence of your respective garrisons and the dedication of your soldiers, the vile villain was subdued. Except for Guo Ziyi, Li Guangbi, and Xun Guan, who are entitled to be granted fiefdoms and await further appointment, Deputy Marshal Jia Nanzhong, for his outstanding achievements in suppressing the great traitor, is hereby promoted to the rank of Earl of Shengping, appointed Privy Councilor, and granted the title of Pillar of State, and bestowed with a scarlet fish-shaped gold pouch; Military Advisor Bian Wuji, for his drafting of proclamations and military achievements, is hereby granted the title of Imperial Guard Commander. All other officers and soldiers are to be given preferential treatment in their appointments. Nanzhong is to be dispatched to his post immediately; this is to inform the relevant authorities."
Commander Jia and Military Advisor Bian expressed their gratitude. Sheng Xie said, "I am deeply grateful for your kind recommendation, Father-in-law!" Jia Gong said, "It is all thanks to your praise, my worthy son-in-law. However, the imperial decree urges me to take up my post; my worthy son-in-law is an officer in the Imperial Guard and must also go to the capital. Today is an auspicious day; please come out, Miss, so we can set off together." Fei Yun came out and bowed, saying, "Father, congratulations!" Jia Jiedu said, "My child, you have just tied the knot, and your husband has already received imperial favor; now, with your new post, our family will surely be reunited. Truly, good things come from heaven, and I am overjoyed." Fei Yun said, "It is all thanks to Father that I have this day." Jia Jiedu instructed the central army officers to immediately break camp and set off for the capital. The journey was filled with joy and celebration, a truly triumphant scene, far beyond what was expected. It was truly a
sight to behold:
The border bugles have cleared the dust of the frontier, the proclamation flies south into the Han palace.
Let the flying generals pursue the fleeing enemy; who will determine the merits of the campaign in the Hall of Heroes?
We wonder how we will reunite after arriving in the capital; let us find out in the next chapter.
Chapter Sixteen: Feigned Scholarship Locks Him
in the Study, Truly Incompetent, He Escapes Through the Dog Hole. It is said that Minister Li, having seen through Xianyu Ji's cheating, was furious and said, "I have failed the Emperor's favor and incurred public criticism by selecting Xianyu Ji for this examination, and I have been deeply distressed for days. This matter cannot be left ambiguous; a second examination is necessary, and I must make my own selection. I have already sent someone to summon that dog-headed man. Gatekeeper, come here, and listen to my instructions: when Xianyu Ji arrives, invite him to sit in the study and tell him I am leaving the yamen." Later, feeling unwell, he came out to keep him company in the evening. There was a sealed note, instructing him to open and read it personally; it contained several important documents, which he was asked to write down. If he wanted to return, he should say that it was my instruction, and that he might have many matters to attend to at his residence, so he should finish it here. The door should be locked; if he is not allowed to lock it, he should also say that it was my instruction, to prevent disturbances by strangers, and that it must be locked. Be careful in all matters! The gatekeeper took the note and said, "I understand." The Minister returned inside.
Meanwhile, Xianyu Ji, having won first place in the imperial examination, was beaming with pride. He said, "Today, my fellow graduates invited me, and we drank a few cups. I was even enjoying a nap with a courtesan when the servants kept reporting that Master Li wanted to speak with me, urging me several times. I think my teacher invited me, probably because he asked me to arrange a marriage the other day, and wanted to discuss it face-to-face. My teacher is a wise and experienced old man, so he naturally understands my meaning. Li Feiyun, Li Feiyun, that poem of yours, carried away by that swallow, has actually acted as matchmaker for me, old Xianyu Ji! I'm so happy!" A servant reported, "We've arrived at Master Li's door." The gatekeeper said, "Master Li instructed: 'The top scholar has arrived; please come directly to his study to sit.'" Xianyu Ji smiled and said, "That's good. It's different from before; he's clearly being treated like a favored guest."
Upon entering the study, the gatekeeper said, "Your Excellency pays his respects. He has just felt a little tired and said he would like to come out to keep you company this evening. There is a sealed letter here; please open it yourself, Your Excellency." Xianyu Ji took the letter, thinking happily, "It must be his daughter's birth certificate. I like the word 'dear' the most. Let me open it." But when he opened it, not a single word was found. Fang exclaimed in surprise, "This doesn't seem like a marriage certificate. What is it? It's so long and rambling, I don't understand a single word!" He asked the gatekeeper, "Read it to me." The gatekeeper said, "You've passed the imperial examination with top honors, yet you can't read and have to ask a humble servant?" Xianyu Ji said, "It's not like that. I've been drinking too much these past few days, and my eyes are blurry. I can't read clearly. Please read it to me, and I'll understand what the letter is about." The gatekeeper said, "Let me read it: a 'Memorial of Congratulations on Your Imperial Journey to the West,' a chapter of 'The Song of the Fishermen's Song,' and a poem 'Annotations on the Preface to the Commentary on the Waterways Classic.' The master instructed that these three pieces of writing are important, and he has asked the top scholar to write them! Write them!"
Xianyu Ji was alarmed upon hearing this and turned away from him. He said, "Enough! Enough! I only said I was here today to discuss the marriage, but unexpectedly this terrible calamity has occurred. What should we do? I've got it! Gatekeeper, you should inform the master that I have some business at the yamen. Take it back, finish it quickly tonight, and bring it back tomorrow morning, how about that?" The gatekeeper said, "The master has already given instructions. I'm afraid the top scholar has many matters to attend to at the yamen. Please finish it here and go back. The writing implements are ready and arranged here." He straightened the table and chairs and said, "Please, please!"
Xianyu Ji became anxious and cried out, "Oh no, no! I haven't been feeling well these past few days and haven't taken care of myself. I need to go for a walk." The gatekeeper said, "It's alright. Even the chamber pot is here." He then closed the door and locked it. Xianyu Ji shouted, "The door must not be locked!" The gatekeeper replied, "It was the master who ordered that the door be locked and that no idlers be allowed to come in and disturb the scholar's inspiration." Xianyu Ji said, "Why do you keep saying the master ordered it? You should loosen the rules a little." The gatekeeper said, "Don't you know that you should have followed the old rules with us the other day? Why didn't you loosen them a little? You were so arrogant, as if you weren't afraid of killing someone. Now you want to beg us, your father!" He then left.
Xianyu Ji stamped his feet and said, "What am I going to do? How did I ever know how to do this? Oh, oh, oh! Now that I have no wings to fly to heaven, I might as well climb over the wall." Just as he was about to climb, he fell down again and said, "I can't even climb over, what should I do? I think this matter is too deceitful, even heaven is not allowing me!"
Suddenly, he heard the gatekeeper holding tea and wine, saying, "Scholar, come here, come here!" Xianyu Ji was overjoyed and said, "Thank heavens, good fortune, good fortune, it seems the gate is open to let me out." The gatekeeper said, "Come to the gate, the master has sent out a teapot and a box. I'm afraid you'll have trouble, so I've sent this servant to bring it here for you to take in through the rotating bucket." Xianyu Ji said, "You said I'm full and can't eat, thank you, but no need!" The gatekeeper said, "Eating is good for you." He smiled and said, "If his can't be released, I'll take mine in." Then he left.
Xianyu Ji hesitated and said, "I think I can't climb over the wall. There's a dog hole ahead; I wonder if I can get through?" He glanced sideways for a while and said, "It's fierce. This isn't the path the top scholar would take. Now I have no choice but to escape this predicament; I can't worry about anything else. I'll try to crawl through." He bent down and strained forward, but just as he made it through, he tripped and fell, causing the dog to bark wildly and run away in a flash. The gatekeeper came over and said, "Why is the dog barking so fiercely? What's the reason? Oh! Why has so much of the brick wall at the entrance to the hole collapsed? Let me open the door and see."
He looked left and right; where had the top scholar gone? Unable to produce an essay, he slipped away through the cave: "My lord invites you!" Minister Li asked, "Has the top scholar finished his essay?" The gatekeeper knelt and reported, "Upon hearing about the essay, the top scholar panicked and fled through the dog gate; his whereabouts are unknown." The Minister said, "So he hasn't written a single word all day. It's clear he's failed and will have to submit a memorial for review. Quickly, have the scribe prepare it! After I finish, have it copied immediately. Tomorrow morning, take a note and send it to the eunuch in charge of the Golden Horse Gate, saying I'm ill, and have him put me on the register for immediate summons."
Indeed:
Coral nets are sparse, fish eyes misjudge the moon's brilliance.
Not because of success, but because of illness
, he has to relinquish his court robes. I wonder what will become of Xian Ganji after the review? Let's hear the next chapter.
Chapter Seventeen: Long Separation, Joyful Reunion, Each Telling Their Past Stories. It
is said that Jia Nanzhong returned to court in triumph, greatly favored by the emperor. He said, “After the court audience, I’ve been quite busy with social engagements. I wanted to tell my fellow graduate, Mr. Li, about how he adopted the Li family’s daughter from my household. Since he requested leave to return to his hometown, he happened to come today, so I’ll come over immediately. I’ll tell him in person when he arrives. Attendants, when Minister Li of the Ministry of Rites arrives, please inform him immediately.” Meanwhile,
Minister Li arrived from the yamen, and the servants reported, “He has arrived at Master Jia’s gate.” After being informed, he went inside, and Master Jia came out to greet him. The two exchanged greetings in the courtyard, and then sat down as host and guest, exchanging pleasantries. Master Jia then asked, "My old friend, I'm glad you look as well as ever. How have you been lately?" Minister Li replied, "I've been on the move for many years, unable to retire. I have no children, only a pitiful daughter who has been separated from me." Master Jia said, "So your daughter was lost. On my journey, I adopted a girl. When I asked her place of origin and name, she said it was your daughter, named Feiyun." Minister Li said, "My daughter is indeed named Feiyun." Master Jia said, "Knowing it was your daughter, I adopted her." Minister Li said happily, "I see. Thank you so much, elder brother!" Master Jia instructed, "Quickly, please bring the young lady out. Master Li is here."
The young lady came out, knelt down, and wept bitterly. Feiyun said, "Greetings, Father. Where is Mother now?" Minister Li replied, "I was fortunate to meet your mother on the way." Miss Li exclaimed, "How delightful! How delightful!" Commander Jia said, "There is something I must tell you: I have dared to suggest that you also find a son-in-law for me. Your son-in-law is named Bian Wuji, from Maoling." Miss Li said, "Brother Bian, come quickly!" The military advisor stepped forward and kowtowed to Minister Li.
Minister Li was delighted by his appearance and demeanor. He thanked Minister Jia, saying, "I am very grateful to you for finding such a fine son-in-law." Suddenly, a court official brought a report saying, "Your Excellency has already issued an imperial decree regarding the recommended candidates." Minister Li ordered it to be brought forward. Minister Jia asked, "May I ask why you submitted this recommendation, Elder Brother?" Minister Li replied, "It is for matters related to the imperial examinations." He then read the imperial decree aloud:
"The Ministry of Rites has submitted a document regarding the simplified examination process. By imperial decree: The imperial examinations are a major event and should be handled with utmost care. Since Li Dao'an has already presided over the simplified examination, he should continue to perform his duties without seeking reprimand. Xianyu Ji is to be taken away by the Ministry of Justice for a thorough investigation. Since the original examination paper's title and format were indeed written by Huo Duliang, they should be corrected immediately to ensure the success of the ceremony. This is to be known by the relevant authorities."
Upon hearing this, Huo Sheng turned away in surprise and said, "So Xianyu Ji cut up my paper and came out on top! No wonder he asked me so earnestly about my title and format when he visited me that day. What a wicked person! Every word the tutor said to me was correct!" Feiyun laughed and said, "Father..." "Now we have no choice but to search for the man surnamed Huo!" Minister Li said. "The top spot must be filled. But in such a hurry, where can we find this person? It's a difficult problem!" Feiyun said, "I know this man." Minister Li exclaimed in surprise, "Child, how do you know?" Feiyun pulled Huo Sheng over and said, "Father, isn't this him? There's no need to search anymore."
Minister Li and Lord Jia were both greatly surprised and said, "What do you mean?" Minister Li said, "Is it really true?" Feiyun said, "Absolutely true." Minister Li and Lord Jia laughed loudly, "Such a strange thing! But ask..." "My dear son-in-law, what has caused you to change your name?" Huo Sheng replied, "It's hard to say!" Minister Li said, "We are family, so please speak freely." Huo Sheng said, "To tell you the truth, Father-in-law, I once painted a portrait of a beautiful woman for a friend, but the mounter mistakenly sent it to the wrong person." Minister Li asked, "To whom?" Huo Sheng smiled and pointed to Fei Yun, "It was mistakenly
sent to your daughter." Minister Li asked again, "How could it have been mistakenly sent to my daughter?" Fei Yun said, "It's the same portrait of Guanyin that you painted for me, Father. The mounter in the courtyard mistakenly sent a portrait of a beautiful woman in spring." Minister Li asked again... "What happened after the mistake?" Huo Sheng replied, "When your daughter found the painting, she wrote a short poem about it. This piece of paper was carried away by a swallow, and I found it by chance while strolling along the Qujiang River." Minister Li asked again, "That's strange! But how do you know it was your daughter who wrote the poem?" Huo Sheng said, "There's a reason for that. Because I was ill, I asked a female doctor to come and see me. She told me about these things, and that's when I realized the painting was mistakenly given to your daughter, and the poem was also written by her." Minister Li said, "Indeed, when your daughter was ill, a hunchbacked female doctor came with medicine. Was it him?"
Jia Jiedu asked Feiyun, "Isn't that the old woman who accompanies you?" Feiyun replied, "That's her." Huo Sheng said, "I entrusted this old woman with the poem of your daughter to return and retrieve the original painting." Minister Li said, "That's harmless." Huo Sheng said, "Unexpectedly, the constables found out and accused me of using the old woman as a front, secretly pulling strings, and wanted to arrest me for questioning. So I changed my name and joined their ranks to avoid punishment." Minister Li said, "I was there; how would I know about this? This isn't some kind of bribery; it was clearly those constables who cheated you. How hateful! Do you still have that poem?" Huo Sheng said, "I have it here."
Minister Li took it, read it once, and said, "This isn't obscene. It just so happened that a swallow carried it and it ended up in my son-in-law's hands. Isn't that fate? There's another matter... " "My dear son-in-law has a cousin who was also separated from us during the chaos, and she is now being raised in my household." Feiyun said, "Congratulations, Father! You've adopted another cousin! How do you know she's Huo Lang's cousin?" Huo Sheng said, "I have no cousins, how could I have such a cousin?" Minister Li said, "If she's not your cousin, how could she have collected all three of your son-in-law's essays? Even in the case of Xianyu Ji's affair, it was he who identified her. He said this person was your son-in-law's classmate, but we don't know each other at all. That's why I summoned her for a re-examination and made a simple assessment myself. If she weren't a cousin, how could I know so much detail?" Governor Jia said, "Brother, our families are related. Why don't you bring this girl over for a meeting, and we'll see the truth then?" Minister Li said, "That makes sense. Attendants, prepare a sedan chair and bring the second young lady over!" The servants responded and left. Before long, a report came: "The Second Miss has arrived."
Minister Li went out to greet her and said, "Girl, your sister is fortunate to have met you here, and she is delighted to have arranged for you to marry your cousin, the newly appointed top scholar, Huo Duliang." Xingyun was secretly shocked. Minister Li said, "But the top scholar says he has no relation to you. Why don't you come forward and meet him, and see what he thinks?" Xingyun said, "Please invite him to meet at Father's office." Minister Li said, "Since he is a close relative, it is fine for him to meet here." Xingyun had no choice but to obey. She went into the courtyard and saw Huo Sheng. Both of them burst into tears. Minister Li said, "Since you said he is not your cousin, why are you so sad to see him?"
Huo Sheng was crying, but then he started to laugh. Jia Jiedu asked, "Why are you laughing when you are crying?" He said to Minister Li, "What do you mean? Neither of us understands the reason." Huo Sheng laughed and said, "To tell you the truth, fathers-in-law," pointing to Xingyun, "this is..." and then fell silent. Minister Li asked, "Who is it?" Huo Sheng replied, "It is my old friend from Pingkang, named Hua Xingyun."
The two gentlemen, Jia and Li, laughed loudly, "Indeed, we should both cry and laugh." Xingyun then bowed to the two gentlemen, Li and Jia, and then bowed back to Li Feiyun. Minister Li said, "You even fooled my mother and me." He turned to Governor Jia and said, "Indeed, you are a very good person, unlike someone from such a family." Governor Jia said, "I remember when you were taking in a son-in-law, you repeatedly claimed that you had made a vow with a woman from Qujiang. Is this the woman you're looking for?" Huo Sheng said, "That's right. At that time, my father-in-law promised that when we met again, she and your daughter would be equally matched."
Feiyun asked in surprise, "What do you mean by equally matched? Is that true?" Governor Jia said, "I did indeed make that promise myself." Minister Li said, "Brother, look how alike they are! No wonder my daughter mistook that scroll of 'Spring Beauty' for her own; and my wife, in the midst of the chaos, mistook Xingyun for my daughter and took her in." Governor Jia laughed and said, "There's only one thing: I took in Feiyun's daughter, which is somewhat unfair to your daughter; and you, brother, took in Xingyun as your daughter, which is a little difficult for you." Everyone laughed for a while.
Huo Sheng said to Fei Yun, "My lady, our vows are old and our marriage is new, I treat you both the same, and besides, you two are of the same ilk, how could I show favoritism!" Fei Yun pulled Huo Sheng away, saying, "Huo Lang, you are so heartless! You abandoned me and forced Miss Li to marry into your family." Huo Sheng said with tears in his eyes, "Fei Yun, don't you remember when we burned incense and made our vows, we promised that when the lovers met, their union would be complete? Just now, Master Jia said that my repeated refusals were not empty words! Besides, he promised that Miss Li and Fei Yun would be together in the future." "When mothers meet, they treat everyone equally, regardless of age." Minister Li said, "Now that they have met, bring them all to my place. Tomorrow, I invite my elder brother to come there with my wife to express our gratitude for the great kindness shown in adopting our daughter and choosing her husband."
Just then, the official in charge said, "Reporting to Your Excellency, the imperial decree has been issued. This year, both the Enrong Banquet and the Qilin Banquet will be awarded simultaneously. Please, Your Excellency and the Military Advisor, arrive early tomorrow." Minister Li said, "Understood." He then bid farewell to Lord Jia and returned to his office with his son-in-law and two daughters.
How the banquet will be arranged and how the family will reunite remains to be seen. Please read the next chapter for the answer.
Chapter Eighteen: An Imperial Decree Grants Double Banquets, Both Wives and Children Receive Honors .
Now, let's talk about the current Yellow Gate Official. Who do you think he is? He is none other than Lord Qin, the Magistrate of Yang County. He was promoted to this position for his meritorious service in defending the city. He said, “I am delighted that my student Huo Xiufu recommended him to serve under our fellow townsman, Jia Jiedu, and he changed his name to Bian Wuji. He has already achieved great merit and later became the top scholar in the imperial examination. Yesterday, I reported this matter to the Emperor, and he granted permission to restore his original name. Furthermore, because of his outstanding literary and martial achievements, he was granted an honorary banquet, a truly extraordinary honor rarely seen in history. I am also attending the banquet as I am temporarily acting as the Grand Master of Ceremonies. Has the banquet been arranged yet?” The official in charge of the banquet replied, “It has been arranged for some time, but I do not know the order. Please instruct me, sir.”
Qin Huangmen said, “A seating chart has been issued.” The first time was the Enrong Banquet. Mr. Li, the Chairman of the Ministry of Etiquette, sat in front of me. The number one scholar Huo Ye sat in the east seat. Mr. Jia, the Privy Councilor, and I accompanied him. The second time was the Qilin Banquet. Mr. Jia, the Chairman of the Privy Council, sat in front of me. The number one scholar also sits in the east seat, and Mr. Li from the Ministry of Etiquette and I accompany him. "The officer on duty said: "So, where is Captain Bian's seat? Qin Huangmen said: "Don't you know yet?" Captain Bian was the one Huo Zhuangyuan changed his name to, and he was always alone. I have already explained it clearly. "The duty official said: "Only small officials know. "
Suddenly I saw the Dining Officer and the Shao Dancer kowtowing forward. Qin Huangmen said: "Is the banquet ready? "Dianshan official said: "Everything is ready. Qin Huangmen said: "At this time, all the yamen masters have arrived and are waiting for you." Everyone responded: "I know." "
I saw Li Shangshu, Jia Jiedu and Huo Zhuangyuan arriving. They were greeted by Qin Huangmen. They had already finished saluting each other, but they couldn't help but say some clichés. Qin Huangmen offered him a seat, saying, "Lord Li, please allow me to serve you wine." Minister Li replied, "Logically, Brother Jia should drink first at this banquet, and I will accompany him!" Commander Jia said, "How dare you! Besides, there is an imperial banquet plan; how can I presume to overstep my bounds?" Minister Li said, "Then it is presumptuous." Wine was poured, and everyone sat down. After exchanging pleasantries, musicians came to perform. The first act was "The Child Worships Guanyin," and the second was the story of "Qingli Reads the Book."
After they left the stage, all the officials rose. Minister Li said, "The Imperial Banquet is over. Set out the Qilin Banquet Table, and I will serve you wine." He then seated Commander Jia in the chief seat and served him wine. They exchanged greetings. The musicians then performed "The Cunning Li Becomes an Immortal" and "The Southern Treasure of Persia." After they left the stage, all the officials rose to their seats. Minister Li said, "The public banquet is over. We can now express our gratitude to the Emperor. Tomorrow morning, we can present our thanks in person at court." He then said to Huo Sheng, "Scholar Huo, you should change your robes and scepter. You can then ride through the streets and be escorted back to your private residence. This way, everyone will know that the title of this year's top scholar has been awarded, and there will be no vacancy." Governor Jia said, "That makes sense." Huo Sheng changed his clothes and paraded through the streets, while the officials returned to their offices. It was truly a scene of breathtaking beauty: Swallows from
the Jade Pool overlook the clear stream, their calls echoing along the roadside like emerald dragons.
How can one repay the Emperor's favor with a single sip of wine? The sound of jade pendants returns
to the Phoenix Pool. Now, Meng Po, knowing that today, if she were to accept the title of Feng Hao, would surely be met with a fierce argument, secretly hung the Guanyin statue and the painting of her spring beauty high, and then withdrew herself. Miss Fei Yun walked to the front of the courtyard, looked up, and said, "Ah! This is my Guanyin statue from back then. It is hung here today so I can pay my respects." She stood up and carefully admired it. Hua Xingyun also came up to the courtyard and said, "So the Guanyin statue and the Spring Beauty painting are both hanging here. Let me first pay my respects to Guanyin, and then look at the Spring Beauty painting." After paying his respects, he stood up, looked at the painting, and then at Feiyun, saying, "Indeed, their appearances are exactly the same."
Just as the two were exchanging greetings, Scholar Huo returned from the banquet and came to the courtyard. He also bowed deeply to the Guanyin statue and then greeted the two ladies. He then looked at the Spring Beauty painting and said, "Look, I'm all alone, but you two and the person in the painting make a total of three." He laughed loudly. Xingyun stepped forward and asked, "Sir, how many flower crowns have you prepared?" Scholar Huo said, "How can I have several? I only have one." Hua Xingyun said, "The two in the painting can share one, but I wonder if the pearl crown can be shared?" Scholar Huo laughed and said, "How can they be shared? I can't say." He pointed to Feiyun and said, "This one is for Feiyun." Xingyun asked, "What Feiyun?"
Huo Sheng pointed to Miss Li and said, "Let Miss Feiyun wear it for now." Miss Li said, "Husband, this is the proper way, how can you say it's a matter of 'letting her wear it for now'?" Xingyun said, "Alas, even if it's a matter of 'letting her wear it for now,' it's not something that can be done by force." Miss Li said, "How ridiculous! A saddle and a horse are the only proper match, how can there be such a mess?" Hua Xingyun pointed to the statue and said, "Husband, can you identify which Bodhisattva it is?" Huo Shengyuan said, "It's Guanyin." Hua Xingyun said, "Here we go again! The incense burning and the oath were not a lie, where did this person come from to cause trouble and fight over it?" Huo Shengyuan laughed and said, "Both of them have a point, it's difficult for me to decide." The two stood back to back, angry, and remained silent. Just then, Minister Li and his wife came by, and Huo Shengyuan stepped forward to greet them.
Minister Li, seeing his two daughters standing motionless with their backs to each other, couldn't help but ask in surprise, "Today is a joyous occasion, a day for everyone to celebrate. Why are you two behaving so strangely? What is the reason?" Feiyun stepped forward and knelt down, saying, "I must inform my parents." Minister Li said, "My daughter, rise." Feiyun said, "I was born into a family and married into the family. My marriage to Huo Lang was arranged by the military governor; it was not an affair. Today, Hua Xingyun is trying to forcibly take away my official title. It's quite ridiculous." Minister Li said, "Today is a joyous day. Let's be a little more lenient with idle gossip." Feiyun said, "I'll be lenient with other matters, but how can I be lenient with the imperial favor!" She then grabbed Huo Zhuangyuan and said, "I'll accept your decision." She then bowed behind Hua Xingyun and said, "I'm willing to give in. I'll take down this Guanyin statue, observe a strict vegetarian diet, and become a nun, whether at home or in a monastery." She then proceeded to untie the statue.
Startled, Madam Li grabbed him, saying, "My child, why are you so hasty? It's always better to speak calmly!" Hua Xingyun also knelt down, saying, "Reporting to Father and Mother." Minister Li said, "You rise as well." Hua Xingyun said, "In marriage, there's no distinction between large and small families, only the order of betrothal. Huo Lang and I swore an oath before the Buddha, vowing to be husband and wife, never to forget each other. Besides, the theft of the scroll's serial number was something I discovered beforehand; I witnessed the top prize fall into the hands of a villain. Now that he has achieved honor as a husband, how can I not achieve honor as a wife? Therefore, I inquired about our old vow with Huo Lang, not daring to offend my sister!" Minister Li said, "That makes sense." Miss Li said, "Father, what about him..." "Is that right? How could I be wrong?" Hua Xingyun said, "Is it only that sister is right, and father's words are wrong?" She cried and pulled at Huo Sheng, saying, "I am but a wallflower, I will not mention that old vow again." She then bowed behind Miss Li and said, "I am willing to yield, I will also take the 'Spring Beauty' painting, I am willing to wear simple clothes and wear plain hairpins, and live alone in an empty room. The young man in the painting, I believe, will not change his heart, I will keep him company." Just as she was about to unravel the "Spring Beauty" painting, she was stopped by the top scholar Huo, who said, "This one is impatient, that one is also impatient, how can we deal with this?"
Meng Ma came over, kowtowed and said, "Master, Madam, congratulations!" Madam said, "Get up. Meng Ma, you have come at the right time, the two young ladies are discussing the imperial edict." "Please say something, and I'll trouble you to persuade her." Meng Ma said, "I understand." Then she said to Xingyun, "Oh dear! What a fine day and time! Why is Zhang Zhi acting like this? Miss, it's common for officials to have two or three wives and children." Miss Li said, "Mama, don't you know? What does it matter if there are two or three wives? Back when I was a son-in-law in the army, it was Governor Jia who officiated at the wedding, and you were the matchmaker." Meng Ma said, "Yes, yes!" Miss Li said, "I never intended to have an affair, I'm not a concubine, so why is Hua Xingyun asking for an official title today?" Meng Ma said, "Miss, as the saying goes: 'If it's good, the elder will become the younger.'" Miss Li said, "How ignorant! What do you mean by 'the elder becomes the younger'?" "!"
Meng Ma then said to Hua Xingyun, "When Yunniang left her profession, she wasn't like you, leaving to become a top scholar! Master Li and Madam Li treat you like their own daughter, that's enough for you. Just make things easier for Baifan." Hua Xingyun said, "Mama, what does leaving a profession matter? Huo Lang is studying in my house. When you came to see him that day, you saw how he was, we were husband and wife. Later, because of the poem incident, I suffered a lot. How come he's an official now, but I can't even get a title?" Meng Ma said, "Yunniang, don't blame me for saying this, but he is indeed the elder and you are the younger. You should give way to him." Xingyun said, "How ridiculous! How ridiculous! What's the elder? What's the younger?" and pushed Meng Ma away.
Meng Ma opened her eyes and said, "Good for you! The top scholar should also mediate. Otherwise, those two will just keep nitpicking and being jealous, making a scene." Huo Sheng said, "This matter is very difficult. Mother, you're confused too. Why are you being jealous and nitpicking?" Meng Ma said, "If it's not jealousy and nitpicking, then what is it?" Huo Zhuangyuan said, "It's because there's only one imperial edict, and they both want it, hence the difficulty." He pushed Meng Ma away. Meng Ma said, "Fine, fine, I've suffered so much for you, and it's not enough. Now that you've gotten your reward, you've forgotten everything, kicking me around like a balloon. Miss, I accompanied you amidst thousands of troops; Yunniang, I wrote poems that underwent countless tests."
Then she lay down on the ground, pounding her chest with her hands, and cried incessantly. Scholar Huo said to the two young ladies, "Mama, please get up." Mama Meng said, "If you don't get up, it means you're getting along well, then I'll get up." The two young ladies said, "We'll do as Mama says." Mama Meng said, "You can't believe me if I say it; I need you three to bow." Sure enough, the three bowed. Mama Meng said, "That's not enough; I also need you to smile." Sure enough, the three smiled. The lady said, "Truly, everything that happened before and after was thanks to you. Mama Meng, don't go back; just stay in my household and I'll take care of you for the rest of your life." Mama Meng got up and thanked them. Suddenly, they heard that Governor Jia had arrived with an imperial edict, and the whole family ran down to listen to it being read. The imperial edict read:
"I have heard that it is customary for the court to be both civil and military; it is difficult to excel in both governing the country and managing the state. Now, I greatly admire Huo Duliang, the Imperial Guard Commandant, for his literary and military talents. He is hereby appointed as a scholar of the Hongwen Academy and concurrently as the military governor of Helong, and is still granted the honor of a scarlet fish-patterned gold pouch. Regarding the bestowal of titles and honors upon his parents
, wife, and children, whether for civil or military merit, the Ministry of Rites shall consult with the Privy Council to determine the appropriate measures and submit them for implementation. Respectfully yours! Thank you for your grace." The family bowed in gratitude, exchanging greetings. Minister Li said, "I was just about to invite you over to mediate, and now I have received your decree." Military Governor Jia asked, "What advice do you have?" Minister Li said, "Just now, my two daughters were arguing about the bestowal of titles, and I was unable to resolve the matter. Now, the imperial edict bestows honors upon Huo's parents and wife, instructing us to discuss the matter. May I ask, elder brother, how should we proceed?" Military Governor Jia said, "Although this is a matter of state, it is also a family matter for you, elder brother. Please decide according to your opinion." Minister Li said, “In my humble opinion, Huo Lang’s parents’ posthumous title should be of the first rank; his wife’s posthumous title, since he was indeed at Xingyun’s house when he became the top scholar, should be given to Xingyun; later, when he served under Elder Brother, my daughter accompanied him, so the posthumous title of the governor’s wife should be given to Feiyun. Is this correct?” Governor Jia said, “The arrangement is very appropriate. Please get dressed quickly and don’t make a fuss. Tomorrow, I will report back to Elder Brother.”
The two young ladies got dressed and then bowed in thanks. A banquet had already been set up, with cups being exchanged and wine being drunk merrily. How joyous! As the wine was finished and the guests dispersed, a swallow suddenly appeared, circling and chirping. Meng Ma said, “Look, the swallow has flown back again.” Top Scholar Huo bowed to the swallow and said, “Swallow, swallow, thank you for your kindness. Now the poem is securely kept, and you will not be allowed to carry it away again.” Feiyun and Xingyun also bowed to each other. They were truly a perfect couple, harmonious and loving, as they went to their posts in Hexi and Longxi. Their wealth and happiness were immeasurable. Later, each gave birth to two sons, both of whom passed the imperial examinations and received honors. This shows that marriages in this world are all preordained, not something that can be forced by human hands; the swallow merely acted as a matchmaker.
The poem says:
Even a bird with a forked tail has feelings; a poem carries away three lifetimes.
From now on, I entrust this to the painter: who will allow a preordained marriage to proceed as before?
