Bill Gates cried in China

—What are your thoughts after reading this?
There are reports that Bill Gates cried in China. The reasons for his tears are varied.
Some say he cried after seeing a Chinese news report. This report stated that during the SARS outbreak in 2003, the China Charity Federation received only 7.7 million yuan in donations, of which only one wealthy individual donated 2 million yuan in their personal capacity. In a vast country with 1.3 billion people, and over 230,000 millionaires (second only to Japan in Asia), when the country faced such a severe disaster, the donations received were only a little over 7 million yuan, and only one in 230,000 millionaires donated—just one in 230,000. No wonder Bill Gates cried. It wasn't just him who cried; any responsible Chinese person would feel sorrow and heartache. Haven't economists long ago said that "the rich deserve credit"? Why, when it's time to make a contribution, do they hide their heads in their shells?
Others say he didn't cry because of this. He cried because someone criticized a statement made by American steel tycoon Andrew Carnegie. Carnegie's statement was: "The rich have a moral obligation to give a portion of their wealth to the poor." A wealthy Chinese man reportedly said, "The wealth I create is my own," and "I have no obligation to return it to society." Bill Gates is a staunch practitioner of Carnegie's words; he donated $23.5 billion to charity in four years, equivalent to 60% of his current net worth. He simply couldn't understand how anyone dared to say "I have no obligation to return it to society." In the United States, Bill Gates is often criticized, accused of donating $100 million to AIDS research in India to obtain tax exemptions; his donations of computers and telephones to schools are accused of advertising, and he himself feels he shouldn't have earned so much money.
Regardless of the reason Bill Gates cried, I still think there's some truth to his tears. Some people always say that Chinese people have a "resentment towards the rich," but I don't know what this "resentment towards the rich" specifically refers to. Logically speaking, everyone likes wealth; no one dislikes it. Otherwise, why would so many people support the goal of achieving a moderately prosperous society? It seems the "hatred of the rich" doesn't refer to this kind of wealth. "Being rich and benevolent" is something everyone welcomes, so naturally, no one would hate someone who is "rich and benevolent." So what does it refer to?
I wonder what your thoughts are after reading this. On the streets of Changsha, celebrities grill a single skewer of meat, and someone offers 10,000 yuan to buy it; someone buys 50 grams of unremarkable tea leaves for 20,000 yuan. However, for the elderly lying in hospitals without money for treatment, and for prospective college students who can't afford to go to school, a few thousand yuan might be enough to save a life or cover their college expenses, yet no one "buys" their money. In comparison, the rich people's "show of wealth" is far more important than their "compassion for the poor."
A female celebrity was selling grilled skewers here, and five skewers she grilled, still smelling burnt, were bought by a vendor for a staggering 17,888 yuan. After buying the skewers, the vendor casually handed them to a child nearby.
The money belongs to the wealthy; they can spend it however they want, and no one will interfere. They can give it to whomever they want, and no one will force them. But considering today, a Bentley luxury car costing over 8 million yuan is in short supply in the Chinese market, which raises some suspicions. China, far poorer than developed countries like the US and Japan, has become the largest market for luxury cars, even making Americans and Japanese feel ashamed. People can't help but wonder: have China's rich become wealthy too easily? Too quickly?
How the rich earn their money is their trade secret, and we don't need to pry. But Marx said that surplus value is created by labor, and capital can only transfer value, not create surplus value. Do these words of our ancestors still hold true today? Without the hard work of the majority, the minority cannot become wealthy. The majority also hopes that the wealth of the minority will lead to the wealth of more people. China doesn't have too many rich people; it has too few. But should the wealthy indulge in debauchery? Should they squander their wealth? Should they disregard the interests of the nation?
Bill Gates cried—whether this is true or not, I don't think it's necessary to verify. Foreigners aren't concerned with Chinese affairs. Discussions about the extravagance of the rich seem insignificant because of our limited influence. But our society should still have a standard. Mozi said, "The rich and noble are extravagant, the lonely and widowed are cold and hungry; even if they desire peace, it is impossible." Hopefully, this worry is unnecessary.
