Why is withdrawal not encouraged?

Withdrawal, or coitus interruptus, refers to the practice of quickly withdrawing the penis from the vagina just before ejaculation, thus preventing sperm from reaching and fertilizing the egg, thereby achieving contraception.

We do not recommend this method because, firstly, it has a high failure rate. During intercourse, people's judgment of ejaculation time is inaccurate. Some men are unaware of ejaculation, while others feel they have ejaculated even before. In such cases, semen often enters the vagina before the penis is withdrawn. Even if ejaculated outside the vagina, the semen remaining at the vaginal opening can still travel along the vaginal cannula and reach the uterus, leading to pregnancy. Secondly, withdrawal interrupts intercourse, abruptly stopping the sexual excitement leading to orgasm, thus affecting the naturalness and regularity of sexual activity. This results in physiological dissatisfaction for both partners and varying degrees of psychological trauma; some may even experience sexual apathy or impotence, losing interest in sex and leading to sexual dysfunction.

Furthermore, long-term use of the withdrawal method can lead to prolonged sexual resolution and pelvic congestion in women, as they may not reach orgasm. This can cause lower back pain and discomfort, and men may experience a range of neurasthenia symptoms, seriously impacting the health of both partners. Therefore, withdrawal is generally not recommended, although occasional use is acceptable.
