Even a thousand lies are beautiful.

I once watched a very old movie. The female protagonist fell in love with a man and lived with him. In the end, the man told her he already had a wife and children. Logically, the woman should have angrily turned on him and slapped him hard! But not in the movie. Tears welled in her eyes, and she gently buried her face in the man's chest. Finally, unable to hold back, her tears soaked his chest. She murmured through her tears, "Lie to me again...lie to me again..." The only thing a heartbroken woman hoped for was a lie that would never fade! This ending moved us deeply; it turns out that some lies in this world are beautiful. In another story,
an elderly couple in a village both fell ill. In their youth, the old man was as strong as an ox, tending to his dozen or so acres of orchard. Hoeing, pruning, spraying pesticides—he and his wife spent all day in the orchard, working tirelessly to support their children's education and careers. The strenuous labor and the atomized pesticides left them with lingering ailments. The old lady always had lung problems, struggling to breathe, and the old man's skin was always burning with pain.
He accompanied her to the provincial hospital, where they underwent numerous examinations. The doctor kept him on. "Your wife has lung cancer, and the cancer has spread. At her age, we can only offer conservative treatment. Eat well, play more, and walk around more," the doctor said. The old man was stunned. He fumbled for his cigarettes in his pocket, trembling as he pulled one out, put it on, then took it off again, crushing it into a fine powder in his hand. "How could she get this disease? My dear wife, you suffered so much for me when we were young. And now, in our old age, how could she get this disease?" He secretly went to the bathroom, cried, and washed his face.

When he came out, he was all smiles. The old lady asked, "Why did it take you so long to come out?" "The doctor kept me here to prescribe some medicine and tell me a few things. These days, doctors just scare people; it's nothing serious! They just waste money," the old man said, trying to understand his wife's feelings. “I told you not to come, but you insisted! Hurry home, you’ve caused so much trouble,” the old woman complained.

So the elderly couple took the train back. The old man secretly called a meeting with his children and told them about their mother’s illness. Everyone cried sadly. The old man stopped them, saying, “You can’t cry! You must keep this a secret for me until your mother dies.” Everyone agreed.

In the days that followed, the old man always went along with the old woman, and his stubborn temper of decades softened. When he had nothing to do, he would sit in front of the old woman and talk, reminiscing about their youth, and they would laugh together. Sometimes, the old man would hold the old woman’s hand and help her walk down the street, refusing to let go no matter how far they walked.

After some time, the old man also fell ill. With no one else in the family, the old woman accompanied him to the hospital for a checkup alone. After the doctor finished his appointment, he kept the old woman behind, saying, "The old man's illness is quite serious. To tell you the truth, he has skin cancer. You'll have to take good care of him. Go home now, ma'am." The old woman understood. She couldn't accept this reality. "My husband has suffered his whole life. I don't ask for anything fancy, just for the two of us to be together. God, what's wrong with you?" The old woman wept in the room, soaking her handkerchief. She opened the door and went out, seeing the old man asleep on a bench in the corridor, his white head drooping over his chest. Not wanting to wake him, she sat quietly beside him. The old man woke up and said, "You were asleep, didn't you wake me?" The old woman smiled and said, "You're so precious! It's alright, let's go home." "Did the doctor say anything?" the old man asked worriedly. "No. With your physique, what could possibly happen?" the old woman scolded him. "Then I'm relieved." The old man and woman went home hand in hand.

Like her husband, the old woman quietly gathered her children together and said, "Your father worked hard his whole life, but unexpectedly, he got skin cancer in his old age. From now on, no one is allowed to mention his passing in front of him! You all have to keep this a secret!" The children knew the truth about both sides, but none of them wanted to reveal it. They all agreed with tears in their eyes.

The two elderly people lived in this lie, each feeling they had to keep the lie for the other's sake. They treated their time together as if it were their last, so they lived well. It was precisely because they knew they were each other's only support that they lived so well, even though their lives were about to end. Due to the long-term medical expenses, their lives were not as good as before. The old man still often bought meat for the old woman, but she wouldn't eat it. She felt she couldn't bear to see her husband leave this world and gave it to him. But the old man couldn't bear it either. He felt that his wife had suffered so much with him for so many years, and he should make her happy at the end of her life. They both lived in a tender lie, which made them feel how important the other was to them.

Years passed, and the two were still alive. The doctor's prediction hadn't come true; the elderly couple, who had been given a death sentence long ago, were still alive. Those who knew them well understood the reason. But finally, the old man passed away. In his last moments, he was still worried about his wife. Who would take care of her after he was gone? "There are no filial children at the bedside of a long-term sick person." Children are children after all; they can't be as caring as the elderly couple. Even as he breathed his last, he asked his wife to leave, leaving their children behind, saying, "Don't let her know about your mother's illness..." Each of the children promised their father that they wouldn't let their mother know. The old man let the old woman in, relieved. He held her hand tightly and said, "I've already told them everything. You must live well." The old woman, with tears in her eyes, said, "Old man, I already know about my illness. You can't fool me, you'll never fool me. But for you, I've endured it all. These past few years we've lived comfortably." The old man smiled, as if he had received a great bargain. His hand, gradually, grew cold…

A person who, despite their hardships, is still willing to grow old with you expresses the most valuable love. Even a lie repeated a thousand times is beautiful if it comes from the mouth and heart of a loved one. Hidden within those unavoidable lies a heart that loves you, something you can never forget. You will understand such lies through tears, forever.
