The origin of the term "ba hui" (obscene term) [Full text]

There's a Chinese folk saying, "扒灰" (bā huī), which refers to an affair between a father-in-law and daughter-in-law. This saying originated from Su Dongpo. Su Dongpo lost his wife in middle age and never remarried. He was busy with official duties and writing, and many years passed quickly, living a strange life alone. Before long, his son married and had children. Su Dongpo was a brilliant and exceptionally intelligent man, overflowing with talent. His son, however, was mediocre and idle, spending his days eating, drinking, and having fun. One day, Su Dongpo's son went out to play again, leaving Su Dongpo alone in his study, deep in thought. At this moment, his daughter-in-law, seeing her father-in-law so engrossed in thought, brought him a cup of tea. That day, the daughter-in-law, dressed in a sheer white dress, carried a teacup and approached Su Dongpo, softly calling, "Father, please have some tea!" She gazed at him with deep affection. This daughter-in-law was actually a talented woman, skilled in music, chess, calligraphy, painting, poetry, and prose. She had married into the Su family because of her admiration for Su Dongpo. However, upon arriving, she discovered his son's mediocrity, leaving her feeling dejected and disappointed. She had long admired Su Dongpo and wanted to take this opportunity to be closer to her father-in-law.

Su Dongpo, lost in thought, stared at his daughter-in-law as she approached. Seeing her flushed face, graceful figure, and affectionate eyes, he suddenly felt a little carried away, almost floating on air. Just as his mind wandered, he suddenly remembered that this was his daughter-in-law and blushed again. The daughter-in-law asked, "Why is your face red, father-in-law?"

Su Dongpo didn't answer, but took the teacup and quickly wrote two lines of poetry on the desk with his index finger: "A pipa in the green gauze curtain, though spring arrives, it dares not be played." Because Su Dongpo was lazy and rarely wiped the table, there was a thick layer of dust, making the writing very clear.

After seeing this, the daughter-in-law quickly added two more lines: "If father

-in-law were to play a tune, the good fortune wouldn't go to outsiders." She then ran away, blushing. Su Dongpo was admiring this when his son returned. Seeing his father so engrossed, he asked, "Father, what are you looking at?"

Su Dongpo was startled and quickly wiped the writing off the desk with his sleeve, saying, "I wasn't looking at anything, I was just scavenging ashes."

Later, whether Su Dongpo actually had an affair with his daughter-in-law is unknown, but the story spread. Later still, people used "scavenging ashes" to refer to an affair between a father-in-law and daughter-in-law.
