Yangzhou Dream - Chapter 9

Qin Yin groggily crawled out of bed, facing her first ever hangover. Her throat felt like it was on fire, parched and burning. Her mind was a complete blank; she couldn't remember anything from last night, only that she was drinking with Xu Zhen. "Never mind, I'll just drink some water first." Frustrated, Qin Yin tapped her head and got out of bed.
With a dull thud, she fell heavily to the ground. Her legs felt like they were on cotton, so weak and limp that she couldn't put any weight on them, and she fell down as soon as she took a step.
"Do you need any help?" Chen Weiliang's voice unexpectedly rang out from outside the bedroom door. Qin Yin was in pain from the fall, and disregarding her image, she called him in with a hoarse voice, and was helped to a chair in the kitchen in a disheveled state.
"Oh, by the way, there was a package for you at the company, so I brought it back." After pouring water for Qin Yin, Chen Weiliang brought in the small package that was placed at the door.
"A package?" Qin Yin was a little dazed. Looking at the delivery slip on the box, she suddenly realized, "Is today your birthday?!"
"Yes." Chen Weiliang wasn't surprised. He was still thinking about the incident from last night and couldn't help but smile. "You kept talking about it all the way last night. You're the first person to wish me a happy birthday."
"Huh? Last night?" Qin Yin was so embarrassed that she didn't know how to respond. Heaven knows what she had done last night.
Seeing Qin Yin's blank expression, Chen Weiliang knew she had drunk too much, so he simply told her, "You drank too much last night, so I picked you up."
Qin Yin felt her cheeks burning slightly, but her heart felt like a million alpacas were stampeding through it: Why! Why did such a precious opportunity to be alone happen when I was drunk!
"Your face is so red, are you catching a cold?"
Qin Yin quickly covered her face and stammered, "No, it's nothing. Last night was really... I'm so sorry to have troubled you..." As she spoke, she realized that there seemed to be only the two of them in the apartment. "Is no one else here?" Qin Yin asked hesitantly.
"They're all at the company. Young Master Duan was worried about you, and since I didn't have any plans for the afternoon, he asked me to come back and check on you. That's when I caught you falling off the bed." Chen Weiliang smiled kindly, but it only made Qin Yin's face turn even redder.
It seems Duan Min is quite reliable after all; I really should thank him properly when we meet again. Qin Yin felt as sweet as if she had fallen into a honey pot; even her throat didn't hurt so much anymore. She smiled shyly while racking her brains for a way to use this opportunity to start a pleasant conversation with Chen Weiliang, and then…
"Have we met before?"
Chen Weiliang's words immediately pulled Qin Yin, who was still immersed in her beautiful vision, back to reality. She exclaimed "Huh?" and stared blankly at Chen Weiliang for a moment, not quite understanding.
"When I picked you up yesterday, you kept talking about Brother Liang. I remember when we were little, a little sister called me that too..." Chen Weiliang saw that Qin Yin still didn't react and was a little flustered. Had he mistaken her for someone else? He was about to correct himself: "Um... maybe I misheard..."
"No, no, you heard me right!" Qin Yin blurted out excitedly, slamming her hands on the table as if she wanted to pounce on Chen Weiliang and cover his mouth, afraid that she would miss the opportunity to explain.
Chen Weiliang was initially taken aback by her exaggerated reaction, but then he laughed with relief, "You're still exactly the same as before, Xiaoyin."
*** *** *** ***
Chen Weiliang's first impression of Qin Yin was when he was six years old. He jumped off his mother's bicycle and encountered Qin Yin crying at the kindergarten gate. It was her first day of kindergarten, and she refused to let go of her mother's hand. Her thin bangs were soaked with sweat from crying, sticking to her forehead in strands. Chen's mother, who lived in the same building, tried to help, but she couldn't persuade Qin Yin to let go. The two adults were at their wits' end.
Young Chen Weiliang was genuinely shocked. It was the first time he'd ever encountered a child who could cry so much. He seemed tireless in his crying, clinging to his mother like a piece of chewing gum. Watching his mother's flustered movements, he rummaged in his pocket, hesitated, then pulled out the pink marble he'd won in a competition with his friends the day before. Standing on tiptoe, he held it up to Qin Yin's eyes and exclaimed, "Do you want this?"
Qin Yin was indeed drawn to the marbles. She wiped away her tears and stopped crying.
Taking the opportunity, Qin Yin's mother persuaded her that she could only get the marbles if she went to kindergarten with her brother Liang. She stared reluctantly at the pink marbles and finally let go of her mother's clothes.
"Come with me." Chen Weiliang sensibly extended his hand to Qin Yin, leading her into the kindergarten. "What's your name?"
"I...I'm called Yin Yin," Qin Yin answered, sobbing, her eyes fixed on the marbles in Chen Weiliang's right hand. Seeing this, Chen Weiliang readily handed over the marbles, tried calling his easily-crying sister's name, shook his head, and said, "It's so hard to pronounce. If I try to say it too fast, my mouth gets all clumsy. How about I call you Xiao Yin?"
Qin Yin took the marbles she wanted, looked at Chen Weiliang who was a head taller than her, and nodded timidly.
From then on, Qin Yin would always follow Chen Weiliang around, watching him compete in marbles, throwing pebbles at the dogs in the factory compound with him, and insisting on walking home with him after school, even though they were in different grades.
"I was quite scared when I found you becoming more and more clingy to me." After learning that Qin Yin was his childhood playmate, Chen Weiliang felt much closer to her and spoke to her without the distance he used to. He said whatever came to mind.
"Why?" Qin Yin was both surprised and disappointed. She had always thought that she was obedient and well-behaved in front of Chen Weiliang when she was a child. She never expected that she would be someone who would frighten him.
"Because I don't have any more pink marbles, and I'm afraid I won't be able to appease you." Chen Weiliang laughed, and Qin Yin couldn't help but laugh along.
"But after you moved away, I missed you quite a bit, and I kept pestering my mom to have another baby sister just like you." Qin Yin heard Chen Weiliang's unintentional words and a willow branch silently grew in her heart.
"I remember you used to study piano, are you still playing?"
Qin Yin nodded enthusiastically. She felt the distance between herself and Chen Weiliang shrinking, as if she had returned to her childhood—when she used to chase after him every day. The Chen Weiliang in front of her was no longer the artist she was in charge of, but the Liang-gege who would give her marbles.
"Xiao Yin, when do you have time to play the piano for me?"
