Chapter 22: Xue Baochai's Little Chaolixiangyuan

Chapter Twenty-Two: Xue Baochai's Minor Illness at Pear Fragrance Courtyard,
Jia Baoyu's Heavy Drunkenness at Crimson Cloud Pavilion. It is said that on this day, after paying his respects to Grandmother Jia and the others, Baoyu returned to his courtyard and saw Qingwen doing needlework. He sat down next to her, putting his arm around her waist as he watched her embroider, stitch by stitch. Qingwen's cheeks were slightly flushed, her bright eyes held a hint of spring, and a faint smile played on her lips. Her right hand, with two jade-like fingers, held an embroidery needle threaded with gold, moving it nimbly like a butterfly as she stitched away. Baoyu was captivated, simply holding Qingwen in a daze.
After a while, seeing that Baoyu still didn't move, Qingwen chuckled, "
Baoyu, you're daydreaming again. I'm very thirsty, go and pour me a cup of tea."
Only then did Baoyu get up to pour the tea. Just then, Xiren came in and saw Baoyu pouring tea. She quickly took the tea and said with a smile as she poured, "You little rascal, you're getting more and more like a mistress. You're too lazy to do anything yourself, so you make Baoyu pour tea for you. You really know how to boss people around." Qingwen also laughed and said, "I'm doing chores here, and he just stares blankly. I was afraid he'd get lost in thought, so I gave him something to do." Xiren also knew that Baoyu often spaced out. So she said, "Second Master, the teacher at the school is unwell these days, so you don't have to go to class. But staying in the room all day, not reading or writing, it's not good to just stay cooped up like this. It would be better to go out for a walk."
"In this cold weather, it's cold and desolate outside. Where can I go for a walk? It's better to stay in the room with you two..." As he spoke, Baoyu grinned and hugged Xiren.
"Baoyu... oh dear, you're touching me again! How many times have I told you? Can't you show some respect in broad daylight! If someone sees this, the master will skin you alive... You... take your hands off him..." Baoyu, who had been filled with lust, suddenly wilted like a frostbitten eggplant upon hearing Xiren mention the master. He released Xiren and sat down sullenly.
Seeing this, Xiren knew that Baoyu was angry again, so she said, "Baoyu, you've become quite distant from your sisters these days. Now that Baochai's old illness has flared up again, you really should visit her as a matter of courtesy."
Only then did Baoyu turn around. "
Indeed, it's been quite a while since I've seen Sister Bao. Quickly, bring me some clothes, I'll go see her right away." Xiren turned around and brought out clothes for Baoyu to wear. Baoyu then went out, led by Granny Li, to Pear Fragrance Courtyard.
Now, Baoyu arrived at Pear Fragrance Courtyard and first went to Aunt Xue's room, where he saw Aunt Xue tidying up with the maids. Baoyu quickly greeted her, and Aunt Xue immediately pulled him into her arms, smiling and saying, "It's so cold, my child, it's kind of you to think of coming. Come and sit on the kang (heated brick bed)." She ordered someone to pour him boiling tea.
Aunt Xue always doted on Baoyu in this way, but now that Baoyu had reached a certain age, being held by Aunt Xue again stirred different feelings in him. Baoyu felt that Aunt Xue's embrace was exceptionally soft and comfortable, his face pressed against two soft mounds of flesh, with a faint fragrance wafting from them. Unconsciously, he felt a reaction in his lower body.
Baoyu quickly changed the subject, asking, "Is Brother not home?" Aunt Xue sighed, "He's like a horse without a bridle, always out and about, he'd never stay home even for a day."
Baoyu asked, "Is Sister alright?" Aunt Xue replied, "Yes, you were thinking of sending someone to see him the other day. He's in the inner room, isn't he? Go see him. It's warmer there than here. Sit down there, I'll tidy up and come in to talk to you."
Hearing this, Baoyu knew it was Qingwen who had come a few days ago, not someone he had thought of himself, and his face flushed. He quickly got off the kang (heated brick bed) and went to the inner room. He saw a slightly worn red silk curtain hanging there. Baoyu lifted the curtain and stepped inside. He first saw Xue Baochai sitting on the kang doing needlework. Her hair was tied in a glossy black bun. She wore a honey-colored cotton jacket, a rose-purple two-tone gold and silver fur-trimmed vest, and a pale yellow silk cotton skirt. All her clothes were neither new nor old, and she didn't look extravagant. Her lips were red without rouge, and her eyebrows were green without paint; her face was like a silver basin, and her eyes were like water apricots. She was taciturn and reserved, which some considered foolish; she was content with her lot and followed the rules, claiming to be unassuming. As Baoyu looked at her, he asked, "Sister, are you feeling much better?"
Baochai looked up and saw Baoyu enter. She quickly rose and replied with a smile, "I'm much better now, thank you for your concern."
She then had him sit on the edge of the kang (heated brick bed) and ordered Ying'er to pour tea. She inquired about the well-being of the old lady, her aunt, and the other sisters. She noticed that Baoyu wore a purple-gold crown inlaid with jewels, a gold headband with two dragons chasing a pearl, a light brown robe with white fox fur sleeves, a five-colored butterfly sash, and a longevity lock and a name tag around his neck, along with the jade pendant he had been born with.
Baochai smiled and said, "Everyone talks about your jade, but I've never really looked at it closely. I want to see it today."
She moved closer. Baoyu also leaned forward, took the jade pendant from his neck, and handed it to Baochai. Baochai held it in her palm; it was as large as a sparrow's egg, as bright as the morning glow, as smooth as cream, and adorned with five-colored patterns. This was the illusion of the stubborn stone beneath Qinggeng Peak in the Great Wilderness Mountains.
Baochai first looked at the back, where she saw the inscription "Spiritual Jade," "Never Forget, Never Lose
," and "May You Live a Long and Prosperous Life." Below were the words: "First, to expel evil spirits; second, to heal grievances; third, to know fortune and misfortune." After reading it, Baochai turned it over to examine the front closely, reciting, "Never lose, never forget, may you live a long and prosperous life." After reciting it twice, she turned to Ying'er and smiled, "Why aren't you going to pour tea? What are you doing standing here in a daze?" Ying'er giggled, "These two sentences sound like a pair with the two sentences on your necklace, Miss."
Baoyu heard... "Oh, so your necklace also has eight characters on it, sister! Let me take a look!"
Baochai said. "Don't listen to him, there are no characters on it."
Baoyu laughed and begged, "Good sister, why are you looking at mine like that!"
Baochai couldn't resist his pestering, so she said, "Someone gave me a couple of auspicious words, so I had them engraved on it. I'm told to wear it every day, otherwise, what's the fun in wearing something so heavy?" As she spoke, she unbuttoned her coat and took out a jeweled, sparkling gold necklace from her bright red jacket.
Baoyu watched as Baochai's jade-like fingers gently unbuttoned her coat and pulled at her collar, unintentionally revealing her white neck and a small patch of her breasts. Her skin was as smooth as frost and as white as snow, and he was completely mesmerized. He could only imagine what her breasts looked like under that red jacket, and his eyes were fixed on Baochai's neckline. It wasn't until Baochai took off the gold necklace and handed it to Baoyu that he came to his senses. Baoyu felt a flush rise to his face, and quickly suppressed his lustful thoughts, forcibly calming his burning desire. He picked up the lock and examined it closely.
Sure enough, one side had four seal characters, and the other two sides had eight, forming two auspicious phrases: "Never to be separated, forever young." Baoyu read them twice, then twice his own, and asked with a smile, "Sister, these eight characters really match mine. How about we swap them?" "
Is Second Master trying to exchange tokens with my young lady?" Ying'er giggled beside him.
Upon hearing Ying'er's words, Baoyu realized his mistake and blushed as well. Baochai's face flushed even more. Baochai scolded, "I told you to pour tea, but you wouldn't move. Now you're here gossiping. I'll tear your mouth apart!" Ying'er then laughed and left.
Baoyu reluctantly returned the gold lock, still warm from Baochai's touch, to her. Baochai took the incense, carefully tucked it into her clothes, and fastened the buttons to tidy her garments. Baoyu stared blankly, sighing inwardly, wondering when he would ever again catch a glimpse of that stunning beauty beneath her clothes. His body involuntarily leaned closer to Baochai.
As they drew near, Baoyu caught a whiff of a cool, sweet fragrance, but couldn't discern its source. He asked, "What incense are you using, sister? I've never smelled anything like it before."
Baochai laughed, "I hate incense. It makes my clothes smell smoky and burnt."
Baoyu asked, "In that case, what is it?"
Baochai thought for a moment and smiled, "Oh, it's the scent of the medicine I took this morning."
Baoyu laughed, "What kind of medicine smells so good? Good sister, give me one to try."
Baochai laughed, "You're being silly again. You can't just take medicine like that!"
Baoyu then said, "Then sister, let me smell this fragrance too."
As he spoke, he brought his mouth and nose close to Baochai's pretty face. Baochai was deeply embarrassed, but too shy to push Baoyu away, so she leaned back slightly and said, "Baoyu is being naughty again. It's just a pill, it doesn't smell that good. Quickly sit back down." In her heart, she thought, "This Baoyu, still so childish, doesn't he know that men and women shouldn't touch each other? It's truly shameful."
Baoyu, caught up in his infatuation, didn't care about anything else. He simply closed his eyes and desperately inhaled the orchid-like fragrance exhaled by Baochai. He felt it was truly refreshing, but he couldn't tell whether it was the fragrance of the Cold Fragrance Pill or the fragrance of Baochai's body. Just as the two of them were lost in their infatuation and embarrassment, they suddenly heard someone outside say, "Miss Lin is here."
Baoyu hurriedly sat up straight. Only then was Baochai able to sit up properly.
Lin Daiyu staggered in, and upon seeing Baoyu, she exclaimed with a smile, "Oh dear, I've come at an inopportune time!"
Baoyu and the others quickly rose and offered her a seat, while Baochai asked with a smile, "What do you mean by that?" Daiyu laughed, "If I had known he was coming, I wouldn't have come."
Baochai said, "I don't understand that at all." Daiyu laughed, "If they're going to come, they'll all come at once, or none of them will come at all. If he comes today, I'll come tomorrow, and so on, wouldn't that mean someone comes every day? It won't be too deserted, nor too bustling. Why don't you understand, Sister?"
Baochai didn't answer, only chuckled. Baoyu knew this was Daiyu's jealousy. Knowing that Daiyu was always perceptive and sharp-tongued, he didn't know how to respond. Daiyu, wearing a bright red satin jacket, asked, "Has it snowed?" The women on the ground replied, "It's been snowing for half a day."
Baoyu asked, "Did you bring my cloak?" Daiyu said, "Isn't it? Now that I'm here, you should be leaving."
Baoyu laughed, "When have I ever said I was leaving? I just brought it to prepare."
Baochai, knowing Daiyu's usual manner, ignored her. Aunt Xue had already prepared exquisite tea and fruit, inviting them to stay. Baoyu praised the goose feet and duck tongues from Sister-in-law Zhen's house the other day. Aunt Xue, hearing this, quickly brought some of her own pickled goose feet for him to try. Baoyu laughed, "This must be enjoyed with wine." Aunt Xue then ordered someone to fetch some fine wine. Granny Li then came forward and said, "Madam, that's enough wine."
Baoyu smiled and pleaded, "Good granny, I'll only have one cup." Granny Li said, "No good! In front of the Old Madam and Madam, you could drink a whole jar. The other day I was out of sight for a moment, and I don't know which unruly boy, only wanting to please you, didn't care about anyone else's life or death, and gave you a sip of wine, which ruined my life and made me get scolded for two days. Madam doesn't know, he has a terrible temper, and he gets even more unruly after drinking. One day the Old Madam was in a good mood, and she let him drink as much as he wanted, but on other days she forbids him from drinking. Why should I suffer for nothing?" Aunt Xue laughed and said, "Old hag, you can just eat your wine without worry. I won't let him drink too much either. Even if the Old Madam asks, I'll take care of it." She then ordered a little maid, "Come, let your mistresses go and have a cup to ease their thirst."
Hearing this, Granny Li had no choice but to go and have some wine with the others. Here Baoyu said again, "No need to heat it up, I only like to drink it cold." Aunt Xue hurriedly said, "That won't do. Drinking cold wine will make your hand tremble when you write."
Baochai laughed and said, "Brother Bao, you study all sorts of things every day, don't you know that wine is very hot in nature? If you drink it hot, it will dissipate quickly; if you drink it cold, it will congeal inside, and your internal organs will have to warm it up. Wouldn't that be harmful? From now on, you'd better not drink anything cold."
Baoyu thought this made sense, so he put down the cold wine and ordered someone to warm it up before drinking.
Before long, Baoyu had already drunk three cups. Granny Li came up again to stop him. Baoyu was in a sweet mood, chatting and laughing with Baoyu and Daiyu, so how could he not drink? Baoyu could only plead, "Good Granny, I'll drink two more cups and then I won't drink anymore." Granny Li said, "You must be careful, Master is home today, he might ask you about your studies!"
Hearing this, Baoyu felt very uncomfortable, slowly put down the wine, and lowered his head. Daiyu quickly said, "Don't spoil everyone's fun! If your uncle calls you, just say your aunt is keeping you here. This old woman, she's had a few drinks and is using us to cheer herself up!" She subtly nudged Baoyu, making him sulk, and muttered quietly, "Ignore that old hag, let's just enjoy ourselves."
Granny Li, who knew Daiyu well, said, "Lin-jie, don't help her. You should try to persuade her; she might listen." Lin Daiyu coldly laughed, "Why should I help her? I don't need to persuade her. You're too cautious, Granny. The old lady usually gives her wine, so having an extra cup at your aunt's place won't be a problem. After all, your aunt is an outsider; she shouldn't be here." "I know." Upon hearing this, Granny Li was both anxious and amused, saying, "That Lin girl, her words are sharper than a knife. What's this?"
Baochai couldn't help but laugh, pinching Daiyu's cheek, and said, "That girl Daiyu's mouth is so sharp, you can't help but hate her, you can't help but like her." Aunt Xue said, "Don't be afraid, don't be afraid, my child! There's nothing good for you to eat here, don't let this little bit of food frighten you, it makes me uneasy. Just eat without worry, I'll take care of everything. After dinner, if you get drunk, just sleep with me." She then ordered, "Bring some more hot wine! Auntie will have a couple of cups with you, then we can eat."
Baoyu, hearing this, perked up again.
Aunt Xue also took off her shoes and came onto the heated kang, sitting next to Baoyu, and then pulled him into her arms. Daiyu poured a full cup of hot wine, and the three of them chatted and laughed again. Granny Li, of course, didn't go, and went back on her own. Now that no one was watching him, and with Aunt Xue coaxing him, Baoyu unknowingly drank several more cups and became somewhat drunk. Aunt Xue then ordered someone to make a hangover soup and coaxed Baoyu to drink two large bowls.
Only then did Baoyu take his leave and return home with Daiyu. Back at Jiangyun Pavilion, Baoyu felt the effects of the alcohol rising in his head, and his steps became unsteady. Xiren, seeing Baoyu return, hurriedly came out to greet him. Seeing that he had been drinking, she and Qianxue helped Baoyu to bed. Baoyu was still mumbling incoherently, but his body wouldn't move. Xiren had no choice but to remove his outer clothes, reach out and take the jade pendant from his neck, wrap it in her handkerchief, and tuck it under the mattress so that it wouldn't feel cold on his neck the next day. Soon, Baoyu fell into a deep sleep. In a flash, he
was back in the Land of Illusion, meeting with Keqing in secret.
