Ranran the Rising Sun (Sister) - Chapter Eight: A Back View on the Playground

For the first two years of junior high, Chen Muyang was a typical example of someone who grew taller slowly; although he was growing, his growth rate wasn't as fast as his classmates'. In the last two years of junior high, however, Chen Muyang's height seemed to be propelled forward, suddenly leaping up before anyone noticed. He went from sitting in the third row from the front to being moved to the last row by his homeroom teacher because of his height.
Taller boys are more easily noticed in a crowd, and Chen Muyang, who was previously unknown, gradually attracted the attention of some girls, both openly and secretly.
When Song Yiran heard Tang Chenying and the other girls talking about Chen Muyang, she was a little surprised. They were basically saying he was handsome and clean-cut, low-key, and had good grades. Song Yiran listened silently, but suddenly the image of him following her around like a little puppy when they were kids flashed into her mind.
Also, she didn't actually think Chen Muyang looked sunny at all; on the contrary, sometimes she felt that Chen Muyang was quite scheming.
She didn't quite understand when she was little, but now she knows: his parents were in rehab for drugs and probably got out now, but she doesn't know where they are. They just left their son with someone else's family. From the beginning, Chen Muyang had always been a very well-behaved child, helping adults and being observant. But she always felt that he lacked the arrogance and domineering attitude that boys his age should have.
Junior high students, busy preparing for the high school entrance exam, finally had a rare opportunity that was like a vacation: the school's autumn sports meet. Chen Muyang had participated in previous years, but when he participated in the 1000-meter race and relay, many people's attention was not on him. However, this year was different.
When Tang Chenying led her to the finish line of the 1000 meters, she knew who she was going to see. Many people had secretly taken their phones today, and the teachers had turned a blind eye. She was no exception.
Last year, Song Kang bought both her and Chen Muyang a Nokia phone, along with a desktop computer for their large room. Since both children's grades were relatively stable and their rankings were high, Song Kang felt reassured about them. However, he felt his daughter was a bit quieter than when she was younger, and he wasn't sure if that was a good thing or a bad thing.
Tang Chenying took out her phone from her pocket, turned on the camera, and stared intently at the main group at the 1000-meter starting line.
Song Yiran spotted Chen Muyang standing in the middle of the starting line at a glance. He was leaning slightly forward, so her expression was not very clear.
The referee at the starting line held up the starting pistol and responded to the referee at the finish line. With a loud "Ready—", the runners at the starting line mustered their strength and, after the starting pistol rang out, more than 20 boys of varying heights rushed forward in a swarm.
While everyone was cheering them on, Song Yiran quietly took out her phone. Just then, they ran past her. Song Yiran wanted to take a picture of his face, but she was too late and only managed to take a blurry picture of his back.
There are still two laps to go. She thought to herself.
More and more people flocked to the finish line to watch the race, and Song Yiran and Tang Chenying were pushed aside. Song Yiran didn't want to push back any further, so she held onto her spot. They were almost finished with the first lap, and Song Yiran thought she should finally get a good shot of their faces. Glancing out of the corner of her eye, she saw Chen Muyang approaching and quickly snapped a picture.
It's still burnt.
Song Yiran sighed regretfully.
"Never mind." She silently put her phone back.
As it was the last lap, the cheers around him grew louder and louder. In the final 200-meter sprint, the cheers almost echoed throughout the entire track. Song Yiran stared intently at the approaching figure, Chen Muyang, who was currently in second place. He was running incredibly fast, his face flushed red, his teeth clenched, and he was sprinting forward with all his might.
In the end, he failed to surpass the first place.
Song Yiran watched him cross the finish line, exhausted, his hands supporting his knees. Sweat dripped from his face and chin onto the track, and he was panting heavily. When he stood up, half his face was hidden in shadow, and a hint of displeasure seemed to linger on his thin features.
For some reason, Song Yiran took a step forward, intending to pat him on the shoulder and say, "I didn't expect you to run so fast!" But some classmates who were responsible for delivering water to the athletes immediately ran to his side and handed him a bottle of mineral water. Song Yiran stopped herself in her tracks.
"Let's go watch the high jump! There, over there, let's go!" Tang Chenying found her and pulled her away.
"Oh... okay."
After gulping down most of the bottle of water, Chen Muyang quickly looked around to see if Song Yiran was still there. He glanced around and only spotted her and another girl's backs, which were in the direction of the high jump competition venue.
He saw her as soon as he ran out; she was squeezed behind several people, anxiously fiddling with her phone.
As the first lap ended, he caught a glimpse of her taking pictures of him out of the corner of his eye, so he deliberately held his head high. On the last lap, seemingly in the same spot, he could sense that she was staring intently at him with wide eyes.
He mustered all his strength and charged forward.
Run! Run! Get first place! Don't embarrass yourself.
The sports representative of Class 5 was on the school's track and field team, but he couldn't run it.
Although he felt frustrated, for some reason, the thought of her anxiously cheering him on just now filled him with an indescribable warmth.
After resting for a few minutes, Chen Muyang slowly walked towards the high jump competition area. However, after carefully looking around twice, he couldn't see Song Yiran. Only her good friend was watching the competition intently.
After looking around again, I finally spotted a familiar figure in a corner.
That's the results board for the competition.
How did she sneak off there again?
"090805, 3 minutes 06 seconds, second place." Song Yiran looked at the results posted on the board and muttered to herself, "She ran so fast... I can only run the 800 meters in 4 minutes and 20 seconds, sigh..."
"Why are you running so slowly?"
Song Yiran was startled and quickly took a step to the side. When she turned her head, she saw Chen Muyang.
"I... I'm not very good at sports." She smiled awkwardly.
"Run around more."
"I'm lazy. Anyway, I'm not fat, and I can pass the long-distance running test."
Chen Muyang stared at her for a while. "You're too thin to run properly, right? Try to eat less."
She paused for a moment, then pouted and said, "Okay."
Chen Muyang tilted his head back to drink water again. Song Yiran quietly looked up and saw that his prominent Adam's apple was moving up and down with the drinking motion, and there were obvious blue veins on his arms.
It seems like she's really grown up.
Chen Muyang finished the water in the bottle in one gulp, and his gaze met hers. Song Yiran suddenly blushed and felt hot, and quickly turned her head away.
"I...I'm going to go play with my classmate." She stammered and ran off.
Chen Muyang watched her retreating figure, his eyes like a still, deep autumn pool, calm yet somber.
"What other competitions did your brother participate in?" Tang Chenying asked.
Song Yiran was taken aback. "I don't know."
"How can you be such a bad older sister? You don't care about your brother at all."
"I……"
"Forget it, let's watch something else. There's the long jump too, let's go check it out!"
As Tang Chenying pulled Song Yiran along, she couldn't help but silently reflect. Don't I care about him? Wait, where is he right now?
She turned her head to look for that tall figure.
Found him; he was lounging lazily against the parallel bars.
The white short-sleeved school uniform had three buttons at the top, but only one was fastened, revealing a small patch of skin. He also held a new bottle of mineral water in his hand, taking large gulps each time, his cheeks puffing out like a pufferfish.
Why is he still drinking water? He must be exhausted from running.
As if he knew someone was watching him, Chen Muyang screwed on the bottle cap and looked in a certain direction based on his intuition.
Separated by the track and many people coming and going to watch the game, the two people's eyes met.
Song Yiran didn't dodge this time, probably because the distance was greater than before.
Chen Muyang gazed at her quietly for a while, then curled the corners of his lips into a half-smile.
The dark red synthetic track, the green central playground, and the grown-up teenagers.
The people, things, and events around us seemed to have all come to a standstill.
Song Yiran could clearly feel her heart racing uncontrollably. Just then, a group of tall boys blocked her way, so she immediately stood on tiptoe, tilted her body, and waved to them.
Even from this distance, Chen Muyang still noticed her unusual expression: her large, eager eyes seemed overflowing with unspoken words, and her fair face was flushed with a faint blush, perhaps from the lingering heat of late summer. A few wisps of hair framing her forehead swayed gently in the light autumn breeze, and her slender arms waving gracefully, the cuffs of her short sleeves hanging loosely.
He rarely saw such vivid expressions on her face. She usually did her homework, cooked, or did laundry in a daze, quietly, or expressionlessly, and her words to him were also bland and indifferent.
Chen Muyang waved to her and watched her slowly disappear from his sight.
He silently lowered his head, his fingers gently stroking the cap of the mineral water bottle, and finally chuckled softly.
