"In Place of My Sister" - Chinese New Year 25

Chinese New Year is approaching. Yaowu has been quite busy lately, delivering gifts to clients one by one before the holiday, so he hasn't gone back to his hometown. We plan to go back together for the New Year. I bought new clothes for Yuanyuan and Yaowu's mother. I also bought some for my own parents, but I didn't dare to go back, so I bought some more gifts and had them shipped back by courier company.

I answered the phone, "Hello, Mom."

On the night of the 27th of the twelfth lunar month, Yaowu stayed at my place. We planned to buy some New Year's goods the next day and then go back to Yaowu's hometown to celebrate the New Year. After dressing, I put on some makeup. Yaowu got up at this time, smiled at me, hugged me from behind, and put his head on my shoulder. I said to him, "Hurry up."
Yaowu started washing up as well. I went back to my room and found my sister's blue fur coat, which I put on, leveling perfectly with my skirt. Looking at myself in the mirror, I felt quite the elegant lady. I put on a necklace and a pair of clip-on earrings. Yaowu was also dressed, in a suit and tie, wearing a trench coat—he looked so handsome.
"Honey, are you done yet? Let's go," I said to Yaowu.

I smiled and said to him, "Come on..."
I wore a pair of leather high-heeled over-the-knee boots when I went out; it looked perfect on me. Yaowu and I went to the supermarket and bought a lot of things and gifts, as well as juice and snacks that Yuanyuan likes. We had a simple lunch and then drove home in the afternoon. Because it's almost Chinese New Year, there were probably many people going home, so there was some traffic on the road, but thankfully, we arrived home safely. It was already past 4 pm when we got home. Yaowu carried things back and forth and even gave some to Aunt Wang.
Because it's Chinese New Year, many people in the countryside are setting off firecrackers at night, creating a more festive atmosphere than in the city. That evening, I helped Yuanyuan try on the new clothes I bought, and the little one was overjoyed. Yaowu told me that he felt this family hadn't changed at all. Yes, I've replaced my sister as the lady of the house.
The afternoon of New Year's Eve was the most tiring afternoon of my life. I first made dumplings, then cooked dishes, and tonight I prepared a huge feast. I was so tired that my back ached. "Yes, ma'am," Yaowu said with a grin. I smiled at him after he finished speaking.
The four of us had a pleasant meal together. Yaowu opened a bottle of baijiu (Chinese liquor) and said to me, "It's the New Year, let's have a drink." I nodded to him and hummed in agreement.
At this moment, Yuanyuan said, "Mom, when did you start drinking alcohol?"
"Mom doesn't drink it, she's just keeping Dad company and letting him taste the spiciness," I said to her with a smile.
"Then I want to try it too!" Yuanyuan exclaimed. I dipped my chopsticks in the liquid and put it in her mouth. It was so spicy that she quickly said, "No, no, it's too spicy!" Then she gulped down the whole drink. Our whole family laughed.
At this moment, Yaowu raised his glass and said, "Mom, wife, Yuanyuan, a lot has happened this year, and I feel very sad..." He was a little emotional, and I could feel her tears falling. My eyes also stung, and tears welled up in my eyes. Yes, sister, if only you were here.
“But I want to thank you. He held my hand... It was you who helped me get through it and gave me hope again,” he continued.
"Okay, honey, stop talking. I understand your unspeakable suffering. Yuanyuan, quickly wipe Daddy's tears." At this moment, Yuanyuan took a tissue and ran to Yaowu: "Daddy, Daddy, don't cry." Then Yaowu picked up Yuanyuan, and Yuanyuan wiped her tears while saying.
"Yes, baby, thank you. Daddy is just too happy." Yaowu smiled happily after saying that.
"Alright, alright, this year has indeed been tough for our family, but aren't we all together? Let's all have a happy New Year." After Yaowu's mother finished speaking, we all raised our glasses, and Yuanyuan even shouted, "Cheers, cheers!"
Sister, Yaowu misses you so much, you know? His love for you hasn't diminished at all, I can feel it. But don't worry, I'll take good care of him, just like I always did for you. After the four of us finished eating, Yaowu took Yuanyuan out to set off fireworks, while Yaowu's mother watched the Spring Festival Gala on TV. After I finished tidying up, I went back to my room and called Mom.

"Happy Chinese New Year, Qiangqiang," his mother answered the phone.
"How did you and your dad celebrate the New Year?" I suddenly asked.
"You spent it at home, don't worry, everything's fine. We're all doing well. How did you spend the New Year?" Hearing my mother say this, I felt so sorry for them.
“I’m with my friends, I’m fine, you don’t need to worry about me,” I replied.
"Alright, you young people have fun. Remember to come home when you have time, and Mom will cook you something delicious."
"Okay, Mom. You and Dad take good care of yourselves. Goodbye."
After hanging up the phone, I sat on the bed, watching the fireworks outside the window. They were so beautiful! I thought I saw my sister in the sky, and I said to myself, "Sister, what should I do?"
When I returned to the living room, Yaowu and Yuanyuan had already finished playing and come back. The four of us sat together watching the Spring Festival Gala. Around midnight, Yaowu went out to set up the fireworks and then called us all out. I also got dressed and went out. The three of us stood at the door, and I took out my phone to check the time.
Yaowu lit a cigarette and stood next to the fireworks, waiting for my signal. Yuanyuan and I started the countdown together, saying simultaneously, "10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1. Dot!" Yaowu quickly lit his cigarette and ran over. Then, fireworks burst into the sky, making a loud, booming sound—it was so beautiful! We all greeted each other with "Happy New Year!" Then Yaowu's mother went inside, and the three of us set off fireworks together, running around every now and then—it was so much fun!
Yuanyuan held the fireworks in both hands and said to me, "Mommy, aren't they pretty?" I nodded to him and said, "They're so pretty. Yuanyuan, it's getting late, let's set them off for a bit and then go to bed."
"Okay, Mom." After a while, we went back inside together, and Yaowu and I coaxed Yuanyuan to sleep. Then we went back to our room. It's very cold here in winter, and Yaowu cuddled me to sleep that night. I said to him in the blanket, "It's so nice to have you as my human heater."
"What else can this artificial heater do?" Yaowu said, pressing his lips tightly against mine while his hands roamed over my body. We had a gentleman's agreement that this was the only way, and so we embraced as if we were asleep.
