[Love and Desire Across Ages] (Part 3)

(III)
"Come on, you'll know when you get there."
"Are you going to tell me or not? If you don't, I'm not going."
"Fine, fine..." Seeing that Jia Li was really about to leave, Ding Ting grabbed her. "Do you still remember Yang Mengjue?"
"Yang Mengjue?" After only a few seconds of confusion, fragments of past memories gradually
surfaced in Jia Li's mind.
"How did she find you?" Jia Li's face suddenly turned serious.
"Oh, we met on the street last time, exchanged phone numbers, and she said she wanted to get together with you and catch up."
"What's there to get together about? We're not the same kind of people." Jia Li's contemptuous tone suggested that the two of them did indeed have some
unresolved issues from the past.
"So many years have passed, Xiao Li, you should let it go by now."
"What can't I let go of? If I see her, I'll see her. I want to see what changes she's undergone."
Ding Ting remained silent, and the atmosphere suddenly became heavy.
"Hello? Dad, it's me, Xiao Li." Jia Li picked up her phone.
"I won't be home for dinner tonight."
"Okay, I have something important to do. You eat by yourself."
"Take care of yourself too."
"Yeah...me too."
Hanging up the phone, the woman's beautiful eyes flashed with a fierce light, as if
she wanted to shoot down everything in their path.
The snow continued to fall heavily on the streets; the new branches and buds would need a very long time to fully bloom.
Old Zhou slowly tidied the house. At his age, thanks to his good health and
the blessings of heaven, there weren't many elderly people as nimble as him. However, despite
this, the old man always prioritized "slow" in everything he did. He avoided arguments, remained humble and patient, believing that a calm mind was essential
for good health.
Except on rare occasions, even when having sex with his daughter-in-law, Old Zhou adheres to a slow and deliberate approach. Sufficient
foreplay, leisurely caresses and thrusting—each sexual encounter lasts over an hour. Coupled with
their established practice of having sex once or twice a week, prioritizing quality over quantity, this allows the young couple
to repeatedly reach the peak of their desire.
After buying groceries early in the morning, helping his daughter-in-law tidy up the room, washing and tidying up, having lunch
, and then taking a short nap—this is Old Zhou's daily retirement life. After his son and daughter-in-law repeatedly quarreled, he came home less and
less often, claiming to be working overtime, but both he and his daughter-in-law knew the real reason. The lack of effective communication between the couple led to numerous misunderstandings,
causing their family conflicts to escalate to the point of breaking down, even though this ironically benefited Old Zhou
.
These young people today have completely forgotten that family is the true essence of life.
"Hello? Oh, it's Xiaoli."
"Are you working overtime?"
"Be careful about hygiene when eating out, and watch out for the cold..."
Although there was no one else in the room, Old Zhou suddenly lowered his voice: "Dad loves you..."
His daughter-in-law wasn't coming home for dinner, and his son was even less likely to come home. The old man suddenly felt lonely, and suddenly
felt like he had nothing to do, which stumped him. Playing chess was an important part of his leisure time, but unfortunately
, the old men in the neighborhood who played chess in the garden downstairs had such poor chess etiquette that Old Zhou usually didn't like to
play with them. After dinner, he hesitated for a moment, but Old Zhou still went out alone.
The city center square was brightly lit as the lights came on at dusk, and men and women in red and green were reflected in the starry sky.
In the Qingya Pavilion Cantonese restaurant on the twelfth floor, there weren't many people dining there, perhaps
because of its high-end price. Many people's eyes were secretly glancing at a table by the window, where three beautiful
women, each tall and sexy, were sitting. Yang Mengjue sat on one side, while Jia Li and Ding Ting sat on the other
. No one spoke.
"Sister Li, I know you still haven't forgiven me," Yang Mengjue couldn't help but speak first.
"Really?" Jia Li didn't utter a single word more from between her neat, white teeth
.
"I know I owe you something I may never be able to repay in my lifetime. So many years have passed, and I just want to say
I'm sorry… I heard you've been married for several years now, and I sincerely wish you well."
"Thank you." Seeing the other woman soften, Jia Li seemed slightly appeased, but remained sparing with words.
Jia Li looked at the young woman before her. The arrogant and domineering air of yesteryear was completely gone. Her beautiful
face still radiated, but a hint of weariness could be seen. She was not yet twenty-four,
the most beautiful age in a woman's life, yet she looked as mature as Jia Li, a married woman of many years. Could time really
change a person?
"How are you and Fang Lei doing?" Jia Li asked proactively.
"It's...it's alright."
Seeing the woman stammering, Jia Li knew things weren't as she described. She desperately
wanted to know what had happened all these years.
"It's nothing, as long as you're still together, that's good. I've never really cared about him." Jia Li stated definitively,
though she might still harbor resentment towards Yang Mengjue for stealing her love back then, she couldn't bring herself to express it.
"Sister, I'm glad you can forgive me. I know I've wronged you, and I've been looking for an opportunity
to apologize all these years."
"Cheers, ladies! Let's turn everything into wine, and let bygones be bygones." Ding Ting
quickly stepped in to smooth things over, "I'll go first!" She raised her glass of red wine.
The crisp sound of the glass rang out. Could the past really just vanish like smoke?
On the way home, Jia Li kept thinking. Things couldn't be as simple as she imagined; the woman surnamed Yang
must still have something to say. After saying
goodbye to Ding Ting, she returned home, only to find her father-in-law wasn't there.
Jia Li changed out of her coat and shoes and saw a thermal box on the table, containing food and a pot of braised pork trotters soup,
which was still warm to the touch. There was a small note on the table; Jia Li knew without reading it that it was left by her father-in-law out of concern for her
.
"Xiao Li, you're back! I'm sorry I'm late. Would you like something else to eat? If you want some soup, Dad will give you some more."
"You're hot." Old Zhou opened the door, only to find his daughter-in-law had returned first.
"Dad, where did you go?"
"Oh, I went to play chess with Old Zhang. I got so engrossed that it got late, haha."
Old Zhang? The security guard at the security office downstairs in the company building? He was only a little over 1.6 meters tall,
dark-skinned and strong, and spoke with a thick, rustic accent, looking exactly like an old farmer who had just moved to the city. Jia Li frowned
. "Didn't I tell you? Don't associate with that old man
so much." "You become like those you associate with, right?" Old Zhou gave Jia Li a serious look. "We've
known each other for decades. Back when I was in the countryside, his whole family helped me. We can't be ungrateful, can we?"
"That's true..."
"Don't look at him like that. His son became a judge in the city court last month. He's much more successful than your man."
"He's not a good person either. A judge son and a security guard father—how unfilial must that son be?"
"You know what, Old Zhang insisted on being a security guard himself, saying he wouldn't let his son use connections.
It's good for an old man from the countryside to be a security guard. His son is a really filial son; he's
better than your man in that respect."
"What do you mean, 'my man'? My man, not your son!"
"Okay, okay, I was wrong." Old Zhou still doted on her.
"Besides, tonight, you're my man." Jia Li kissed Old Zhou on the cheek, making the old man
laugh.
Jia Li was only pretending to be angry; she was easily appeased.
"Your 66th birthday is at the end of the month. Let's call Jianpeng back tomorrow night to discuss what to do."
"Okay." Old Zhou didn't object, after all, he hadn't seen his son in a long time.
"By the way, how about I cook this weekend?"
"You, can you handle it?"
"Don't underestimate me!" Jia Li glared and pretended to be angry. "I'll make you some soup.
Don't worry, it'll be delicious!"
The air in the room was humid and warm. Jia Li took a sip of the soybean and pig's trotter soup that Old Zhou had made. "Mmm, delicious!"
The next morning, after making breakfast for his daughter-in-law, Old Zhou went to the market to buy groceries. His son was
coming home for dinner that evening, and the family could finally sit down together for a proper meal. He felt that this was what a home should feel like.
His son, Zhou Jianpeng, hadn't been home for some time, and he guessed he was seeing another woman. His daughter-in-law seemed to
understand, and neither of them had revealed it to their son. Thinking of this, Old Zhou couldn't help but sigh.
His son didn't want such a good woman as Jia Li; he, as her father, would have to cherish her. The
old man spent the whole day busy with housework and racking his brains to prepare dinner.
After finally finishing six dishes and a soup, his son and daughter-in-law returned home one after the other, but the atmosphere there was something Old Zhou hadn't expected.
"Work, work, work! Do you even care about this family? Now look what's happened, you don't even come home!"
"If I don't work, who will give you money to buy bags, clothes, and cosmetics? Who will give you…"
"You bastard! Is this what I want?! You know perfectly well how much you give to the family! Don't think I don't
know you have a woman outside!"
"So what if I have a woman! Even a sow can give birth! What can you
do! You've done everything around the house, big and small! It's all done by Dad!"
"Zhou Jianpeng, you shameless bastard!"
The old man's carefully prepared dishes were ignored at the dinner table. Seeing his daughter-in-law and son almost
coming to blows right in front of him, Old Zhou couldn't hold back any longer.
"Shut up, both of you!" Old Zhou slammed his chopsticks down on the table, startling Jia Li
and Zhou Jianpeng.
"Arguing! Arguing! Arguing! Don't you want this family anymore?"
Jia Li lowered her head and didn't speak. Zhou Jianpeng didn't dare look at his father either; in his memory, his father
rarely got angry.
"If you don't want to live like this, get the hell out! Those who want to live a decent life, stay!" The old man's strong voice
echoed repeatedly in the room.
Zhou Jianpeng vaguely sensed something was wrong. His father never took sides, but today his words were clearly directed at him.
After a long silence, Zhou Jianpeng lit a cigarette and took a deep drag.
"All you know is smoking! One day you'll smoke yourself to death!" Old Zhou cursed fiercely.
"Fine, I'll go outside to smoke!" Zhou Jianpeng frowned. "Hmph! I can't stay in this house anymore!"
"Bang!" Zhou Jianpeng slammed the door shut and stormed out without looking back.
Jia Li was stunned. She hadn't expected Zhou Jianpeng to actually leave, and Old Zhou was also speechless.
The two women sat there, tears welling up in Jia Li's eyes.
The husband who had sworn eternal love and accompanied her through countless days and nights, the Zhou Jianpeng who had vowed to love her for a lifetime, was
gone forever.
She was only twenty-seven, childless, and an orphan. If she really got divorced,
what would she do for the rest of her life? She had always been a woman who needed to be loved, but the
men who lingered around her because of her stunning beauty had never given her true support. Remarry? If she were just an ordinary woman,
would men still fawn over her? Which man could she still trust?
"Your favorite vegetables," Old Zhou said, placing a large piece of his chopsticks on Jia Li's plate.
Jia Li's eyes were red as she looked at her father-in-law, the only man she trusted now, the
only man she could rely on. But Old Zhou remained solemn, as if nothing had happened.
"Even if the sky falls, Dad will hold it up for you,"
Jia Li said, her body trembling. She hugged Old Zhou tightly with her long arms, tears streaming down her face.
She was truly crying.
