【Cold River Snow】(Part Ten, Chapter Thirty-Nine)

Chapter Thirty-Nine:
Returning to Fangwan after two years, this time, we came to say goodbye. Yanqiu had withstood
the tests of his second uncle and Commissioner Zhao. Fuzhou Prefecture was upgraded to a prefecture-level city, and Commissioner Zhao rose accordingly, becoming the prefectural party secretary.
Yanqiu, too, finally stepped down from his miserable township party secretary post. At the beginning of the year,
he was elected deputy director of the Municipal Industry Bureau at the Municipal Party Committee Congress, responsible for the restructuring of the city's state-owned light industrial enterprises.
We left at night; Yanqiu said he couldn't wait until morning, fearing he wouldn't be able to leave. However, our departure wasn't
smooth, because there were far too many people waiting at the entrance of our old house alley.
Justice resides in the hearts of the people; I witnessed firsthand the most direct manifestation of Yanqiu's achievements over the past few years. I am very proud,
very proud; I've snagged a good man!
Back in the city, we didn't accept the family housing allocated by the Municipal Party Committee, but instead moved back into our old house.
This old house, which I hadn't seen for five years, held our laughter, our recklessness, and also our endless
pain and regret.
The day Yanqiu went to report to the municipal party committee, I also went to the school I hadn't seen in so long. Now upgraded to the [Fuzhou
Teachers' College], the old school was obviously much larger than when I studied there. Walking through the empty
campus, I inadvertently arrived at someone's office building. My feet moved there automatically.
Peeking in, I saw no one in the office. The former office of the academic affairs director now bore
the sign for the Second Academic Affairs Office. Li Qiang, the vice-dean and associate professor who held the reins of academic affairs at the school back then, was also
the enemy who caused my family's ruin. He had vanished along with my mother's poison and his mistress, Luo Yufeng, disappearing into thin air,
nowhere to be found!
It was only many years later that I vaguely understood from Yanqiu's words that Luo Yufeng's disturbance in the hospital
was entirely a conspiracy orchestrated by Li Qiang. However, this conspiracy
was merely a minor episode in the tense political struggle that gripped Fuzhou at the time . Its ultimate target was
Zhao Jinghang, the then regional administrative commissioner, who is now firmly established and has risen to the position of secretary of the prefectural committee. Yanqiu and I
were just insignificant, dispensable cannon fodder!
Perhaps it was because my mother understood the intricacies of the situation that she resolutely and ruthlessly poisoned Li Qiang and Luo Yufeng. To give
Yanqiu and me some peace!
Or perhaps, it was because of my mother's decisive and ruthless actions, sacrificing her own life, that Yanqiu made
the difficult decision to ultimately choose to be with me, despite the pressure from her family!
Seeing these things reminded me of her, and tears welled up in my eyes.
I quickly wiped away the tears. This wasn't a place to vent my emotions; it wasn't appropriate. Besides,
I was here to report for duty today, and having red, swollen eyes was unacceptable!
I fled downstairs as if escaping, running away from that little building that had caused me so much pain.
I searched the vast campus for ages before finally
hearing the noise in the small chapel, our old school auditorium. I went over to look, and there were groups of students on the steps leading to the auditorium, holding banners and placards,
arguing vehemently. At the far end of the crowd, several teachers were trying their best to persuade them.
I saw my former homeroom teacher, Zhang Xingwen. Old Zhang saw me too and quickly beckoned me over.
I squeezed through the crowd, finally reaching Old Zhang, who pulled me into
a small room next to the auditorium.
"You can see the mess," he said. "Principal Yang went to Wenyinge Square to persuade the students! We were going to
prepare a welcome party for you, but now it's probably going to be ruined. You've been given this urgent task, so come out
with me and try to persuade the students. Principal Yang ordered that not a single student be allowed to leave!"
The situation was urgent, so I didn't have time to ask any questions and went out with Old Zhang to persuade the students. In fact,
I could guess why the school was so empty today.
During my two years at Fudan University, I witnessed firsthand the exuberance and passion of Shanghai university students! Last winter,
students from 32 universities in Shanghai marched all the way from People's Square to the old Zhabei Railway Station, causing
12 trains between Beijing and Shanghai to be delayed.
In the past decade or so of reform and opening up, society has developed rapidly, and many of the bad habits of the old society have resurfaced.
Obvious corruption and hedonism are becoming increasingly prevalent.
It's right for students to care about the country, current events, and social injustice, but their frequent marches and street blockades remind me of
the recklessness of the Red Guards during the Great Turmoil of the past. Is society about to descend into turmoil again? I feel uneasy and fearful; I can't help but
worry about Yanqiu!
