(VIII)
Morning and Evening At nine o'clock in the morning, the temperature was pleasant. Li Xia pushed the stroller her father-in-law had made, out of the courtyard. The
large open space outside the courtyard was shaded by the palm-sized leaves of the sycamore trees, and the few large poplars next to the sycamore trees were sparse and not
very lush.
A little while later, Wei Xi came out. He went straight to the sycamore tree, where a group of people were sitting. Some were playing
chess, and some were playing cards. When they saw Wei Xi coming, the crowd shouted, "Old Xi is here! Hurry up! We haven't played for days
. After you finish this game, let Old Xi come over!" A middle-aged man who looked about the same age as Wei Xi pointed at the young man
and said. The younger man said unhappily, "When Uncle Xi comes, I have to move aside. Why
don't you say that when Da Biaozi comes?" The young man complained, and several people next to him cheered.
Wei Xi walked closer and took a look, then quickly waved his hand and said, "You guys continue, we're not playing today. We have plenty of
time to play." Hearing Wei Xi say this, the young man laughed, "Look at my Uncle Xi, and look at you,
hmph, checkmate, serves you right for talking nonsense." The young man was really not polite.
Watching the two of them locked in a fierce battle, a few days later, an old woman and her family from the roadside called out to Wei Xi,
"Uncle Xi, how come you still have the leisure to watch a chess game? Come over here, tell me about yourself."
Wei Xi chuckled and said a few words to the two chess players before walking over. As he approached, he hurriedly greeted them,
"Oh, Aunt Li, Grandma Wang is resting here." With a smile, Wei Xi found a stool and sat down.
"Why didn't you bring your grandson out?" Aunt Li asked Wei Xi. Wei Xi stretched out his legs and put his hands on his thighs.
Hearing Aunt Li's question, he replied, "Oh, his mother is feeding him."
"Oh, is he breastfed or formula-fed?" Several women asked in turn. Wei Xi scratched his head and
said briefly, "Oh, no formula."
Grandma Wang smiled warmly and said, "Breastfed, huh? Judging from the look, there's nothing wrong with your milk supply.
Old Xi, if you didn't have enough milk, wouldn't you have given his aunt some nourishing food?"
Wei Xi smiled awkwardly and lowered his head in embarrassment.
As the women were talking, they saw the "aunt" they were talking about, Li Xia, pushing a stroller out.
Through her own CR-V, she could hear the sounds coming from ahead. Li Xia glanced at the small road where
several elderly women were sitting. Seeing Li Xia push the stroller out, the women called out, "
Xia, come here, bring the baby over here," their voices warm and expectant.
Li Xia, wearing a floral long dress and a white button-down shirt with lace-trimmed sun sleeves,
gently pushed the stroller over. Reaching the group, Li Xia took the baby out of the stroller.
"Uncle Xi, look at your grandson! Look, so chubby and cute!" Aunt Li exclaimed first
, pinching the baby's cheek as if the child were her own.
Grandma Wang Er chimed in, "Isn't that right? The little guy is so well-behaved, just like his father was when he was
young. Look at those big eyes, just like his mother's. He'll definitely be a handsome young man when he grows up
!"
Listening to the group of people endlessly praising his grandson, Wei Xi's old face beamed with
joy. He was overjoyed.
As they chatted, a man in his forties approached from a distance. Seeing Wei Xi
sitting under a poplar tree by the roadside, he called out, "Brother Xi, it's been a while! Oh, isn't this my nephew's
wife? No wonder the house was locked for days; she went to the city with her son!"
This man was Wei Yunlong, of the same generation as Wei Xi, and, more accurately, from the same clan in Wufu.
He sat down next to Wei Xi and chatted with the other men. The topics were mostly trivial
matters, nothing of substance.
More than an hour passed, and it wasn't time to cook yet. The group continued
to rest there, though the sun was getting warmer.
Little Chengcheng, who was playing, suddenly started crying. Judging by the time, it was time for his milk.
Li Xia nestled close to Grandma Wang, surrounded by other elderly women, and didn't pay much attention. She unbuttoned her blouse and took
out her breast.
The little one immediately settled down after nursing. Looking at him, Grandma Wang
asked Li Xia, "Have you given the child any liquid food?" Aunt Li chimed in, "Oh dear,
is your milk supply enough? If not, let Uncle Xi get you some lactation-boosting supplements." "As long as there are no milk bubbles,
it seems fine. Is the baby eating a lot?" The women chattered amongst themselves, leaving Li Xia unsure
who to respond to.
Grandma Wang Er interrupted, "Let my nephew's wife catch her breath, you're all asking too many questions."
The old woman was very considerate, and her words carried weight. Li Xia looked at Grandma Wang Er's kind concern and smiled,
"Yes, I also prepared some porridge for the baby. The baby's appetite is good, and there's enough breast milk. He
's been drinking my milk all along, never stopped."
Aunt Li whispered to others, "Look at Zongjian's wife, those two big white breasts. City people
are different from us country folk, so white and plump." While admiring the cuteness of the baby in Li Xia's arms, they
couldn't help but envy her snow-white and firm breasts.
After hearing Li Xia finish speaking, Grandma Wang nodded and said to her with great affection, "Xiao Jian has no
brothers, he's all alone, very lonely. Your situation meets the criteria for a second child, haven't you planned to have another one for
company?"
"Grandma, I have thought about that, but the child is still too young, if we want another one, we'll have to wait a few years," Li Xia
said, smoothing her hair as she looked at her son who was almost full.
A somewhat childish young voice came from afar, "Grandma, give me a few dollars to spend!" At this moment, a
young man on a bicycle came from the other side of the road, shouting, "Grandma, give me a few dollars to spend!" The bicycle sped up and then suddenly
braked hard when he reached the crowd.
Grandma Wang saw her grandson's sudden movement and pointed her finger at his nose, laughing and scolding, "You little
rascal, spending money again! You've become unruly since starting middle school, your studies aren't good, but you're always asking me for money. Go away, go away!"
" I'll give it to you later," Grandma Wang said with a laugh, scolding her grandson. Seeing him staring curiously at Li Xia's chest
, she quickly got up, took out some money from her pocket, and handed it to him, saying, "Go away! You see your aunt and don't even
say a word, so rude! Get lost!" At this, a group of old women around them burst into laughter.
Li Xia didn't deliberately avoid the young man, who looked to her teens. It was normal for a child to have such greedy eyes when he saw a woman's
exposed breasts. She gently pulled her nipple from her son's mouth,
coaxed him, and the child quietly fell asleep.
When Grandma Wang Er sat down, she saw milk beads welling up on Li Xia's nipples and chuckled. Only after
Li Xia put the baby in the stroller did she take her hand and say, "You have plenty of milk. Let the baby nurse for a while longer; it's
good for the baby's health. Even if you want to wean, do it a little later. Look at the village, who doesn't breastfeed until they're
over a year old?" The old woman gently patted Li Xia's hand, speaking earnestly, making Li Xia feel the simplicity and kindness of the countryside once again.
"Zhang Sheng, do you even know how to play? Two against one, right?" A somewhat angry
voice came from the direction of the sycamore tree. Following this voice, the landlord spoke up, "Young man, you played well, yes, just like that,
three against one, not bad, you got it!"
"Damn, this is unplayable! You're playing Landlord, why play three against one?" Angered words
came from the first person's mouth. "Brother Sheng, that's called losing the hand but not the road, hahahaha," the landlord said sarcastically.
A chorus of mocking laughter and insults erupted, all directed at Zhang Sheng.
"That's how I play my cards, they can't hold," a nasal voice rang out. The voice was utterly
comical, with a smug, almost punchable quality. Clearly, it was Zhang Sheng. He spoke with a smile on his face,
a truly heartless fellow. "Say what you will, I'll just play my cards," he said, seemingly unfazed.
"Damn it, another 16! Damn it, don't you have an Ace or a 2? You idiot, you're really infuriating
!" Zhang Sheng's partner, the "farmer," cursed angrily, revealing Zhang Sheng's cards as he spoke.
What he saw only fueled his anger.
As the group fought, it was clear that Zhang Sheng had become the target of everyone's anger. Even Wei Yunlong, sitting on the roadside, joined in
the insults directed at Zhang Sheng. "Zhang, what the hell are you playing for? You get insulted every day, don't you? This idiot
loses money and still gets yelled at!" Wei Xi, sitting next to him, chuckled and pulled Wei Yunlong aside. "Little San, say less.
Why are you bullying him?" Wei Yunlong smiled sheepishly. "Yeah, we got carried away. I forgot my
nephew's wife is right here." Wei Yunlong scratched his head sheepishly.
Zhang Sheng was a truck driver who liked to play cards in his spare time. It wasn't that he didn't know how to play; in fact, he
was quite calculating when he played. It was just that his personality was rather unpopular; he was always lukewarm, which made people anxious to watch him.
The neighborhood spent the morning chatting about everyday life. Then, the village committee
's loudspeaker announced, "Zhangzhuang's tofu is here! Come to the village committee to buy some if you want!" The loudspeaker repeated
the announcement several times.
"Let's get some tofu for lunch. I'll go get two pieces," Wei Xi asked his daughter-in-law. Li Xia was about to get up to
go buy it herself when, before her daughter-in-law could speak, she quickly said, "It's getting hot. You and the child should go inside. Don't let the child get sunburned." She
then turned and went back home to get a basin of water before heading to the village committee.
"Look at that father-in-law and daughter-in-law, so considerate even when eating tofu! Zongjian is so lucky to have such a good father
and such a good wife!" several women murmured. Soon after, they all got up, grabbed their stools, and went
home to cook. Only a few people remained under the sycamore tree, still feeling awkward. After eleven o'clock,
everyone under the sycamore tree left.
When Wei Xi returned, he not only bought tofu but also brought a bag of apples. The tofu was already being pulled from the water.
Wei Xi put the apples on the table, hurried to the backyard to pick a few scallions, and then picked a few tomatoes. He
quickly started preparing lunch.
It was a hot day, so he kept it simple. The gauze curtains in the west wing were drawn. Wei Xi made two thin pancakes and stir-fried
some tomatoes and eggs. Finally, he put a small pot on the gas stove, fried the tomatoes in oil, added some
water, and made a large bowl of tomato and egg soup.
Li Xia had already mixed the tofu and scallions and placed them on the eight-immortal table. Seeing her father-in-law carrying the soup bowl and
the stir-fried tomatoes and eggs, she hurried over, took the bowl from him, and
handed him a towel, wiping his forehead. "Wipe your sweat," she said, "you're covered in sweat. Today is
almost the same as yesterday. It's midday, boss. Sit down and rest for a while."
After working for an hour, Wei Xitian put down a small stool outside the back door, watching his daughter-in-law enjoy
the food he had prepared and smoke a cigarette with relish. She felt very satisfied. Her mind drifted back to when her son was a child.
In the blink of an eye, her son was now grown up, married, and had children. Thinking about this, she smiled.
Seeing her father-in-law holding a cigarette in one hand and a beer bottle in the other, a broad smile on his face, Li
Xia raised an eyebrow and asked, "What funny thing did you see that made you act like that?" The old man followed
his daughter-in-law's words, his gaze falling on her face. Her bright little face, and the way she was munching on a biscuit,
were enough to make anyone chuckle. Wei Xi's lips also parted in a wide grin, and she laughed, "Chengcheng is just like you! Look at him,
mischievous as he is, just like you!"
Seeing her father-in-law's teasing, Li Xia glared at him, "I'm ignoring you, you're making fun of me again," and then silently
began eating her scallion and tofu salad. Her playful little face was just like her daughter's, and seeing it filled
Wei Xi with affection. Old Wei Xi felt a surge of comfort.
After finishing lunch, Wei Xi tidied up the house, went to the yard, closed the gate, took out his phone, dialed
his son's number, and said, "Hey, Jianjian, have you eaten?" His son's deep
voice came from the other end of the line, "Dad, I've eaten. Have you eaten?" Hearing his son's voice, the old man felt much
more at ease and continued, "Are you busy? Are you tired? When are you coming home?"
Wei Xi didn't answer his son's question but instead asked him with concern. Knowing his father was worried, Zong Jian
quickly gave him good news, "Hehe, it's nothing, it's nothing. I'll be back in two or three days. You need to be careful..."
" Take care of yourself. If anything happens, just tell Xiaxia, okay?"
"Alright, I'm relieved if nothing's wrong. You're always busy out there, so you must take care of yourself. I
won't bother you anymore, but please take care of yourself." After saying that, Wei Xi hung up the phone.
Before he even reached the living room, he heard his daughter-in-law sitting by the back door talking on the phone. "Yeah, we've arrived at our hometown.
There's no one home. Yeah, we'll go back in a few days after our vacation.
Yeah, it's okay, I'm here with him. Yeah, all right, okay." Only after the call ended did Wei Xi go over. He found a small stool and went
outside.
"Oh, Dad, I just called the child's maternal grandfather. Yeah, I told him we've arrived in the countryside.
" Li Xia saw her father-in-law coming over and told him.
Wei Xi lit a cigarette and took a light puff. "Right, just let them know, so they don't go and find no one home."
He walked over to his daughter-in-law, sat down, and smoked with his back to her, looking at the vegetables in the backyard.
Looking at the vegetables, Wei Xi thought about making dumplings for his daughter-in-law that evening. Unfortunately, his son wasn't around, and the
newly sprouted fennel wasn't ready to eat yet. He'd wait a few days until his son was home, then make fennel dumplings for him .
His son had loved fennel since he was little, and it would be ready in a few days.
Looking at the old cucumber, Wei Xi had an idea: he'd make cucumber dumplings for his daughter-in-law that evening.
Li Xia, gazing absently at her father-in-law's back below the steps, suddenly noticed two gray hairs on his head
and hurriedly said, "Dad, you have two gray hairs!"
Wei Xi, preoccupied with his own thoughts, didn't pay attention to his daughter-in-law's question. He turned to her and asked,
"Huh? What did you just say?"
Li Xia leaned closer to the old man and said, "You've been worrying so much that you've gotten gray hairs. People have noticed, so
I'll pluck them out for you."
Wei Xi chuckled and waved his hand, saying, "No need. I'm over fifty years old, why bother with that?
It's only natural to get gray hairs."
"How can I let that happen? It's just a few strands, please pluck them," Li Xia pleaded, pulling on the old man's arm. Helpless, Wei
Xi flicked his cigarette ash and said, "You, I can't refuse you, you silly child."
"Oh, oh, oh, let me finish my cigarette first. Look at you, so impatient." Before Wei Xi could finish speaking, his head
was pulled towards him by his daughter-in-law. Her two delicate little hands pressed down on his head, and she
kept saying, "Don't move, it'll be over in a minute."
After taking two quick puffs of his cigarette, Wei Xi threw the butt on the ground and stomped it out. He obediently slumped down, and his head was
pulled towards her. Li Xia leaned forward slightly, focusing intently and carefully picking out the white hair. She
said like she was coaxing a child, "Bear with it, don't shout when I pull it out." After instructing her father-in-law, Li Xia
wrapped the white hair around her index finger with her right hand, wrapped it around a few times, and then suddenly pulled it out.
"Look, isn't this a white hair?" Li Xia said, holding up the hair wrapped around her fingertip. Wei Xi turned his head
to take a look, but what came into view was his daughter-in-law's round and full breasts under her cotton tank top.
Her snow-white neck was framed by thick, jet-black hair that cascaded down her chest. Her shoulders were gently hunched, her arms slightly raised, concealing her
large, bright breasts beneath the silken fabric. A faint, delicate fragrance wafted into Wei Xi's nostrils, making his heart flutter
uncontrollably. Following the trail of her long, black hair, Wei Xi struggled to lift his head. Gazing at the white strands of hair on his daughter-in-law's fingertips, the old man's eyes
became hazy. He couldn't tell if the scent in her breath was milk or her natural fragrance, nor whether his eyes were fixed
on the white hair on her fingertips or on what lay beyond her arms. Perhaps it was both—the intoxicating
scent, the alluring curves.
He turned his head away, gently closing his eyes, but the abyss between those bright breasts,
so captivating and alluring, lingered in his mind, along with that inescapable scent.
Especially the second gray hair, and her voluptuous body was already pressed against his shoulder, her
incredibly elastic young flesh, even through the suspenders and silk scarf, the undulations with her breath made him clearly feel
the power of a full-figured woman.
This sensation seemed even stronger than the accidental touch on the back of his hand during yesterday's bath. The old man's restless desire
resurfaced. Wei Xi bit his lip, closed his mouth, and
his breathing changed, alerting his daughter-in-law. "What's wrong? Are you sleepy?"
His daughter-in-law's sweet, gentle voice reached his ears. He took a deep breath of the fragrant scent, then simply
exhaled through his nose. He straightened up, turned to Li Xia, and said, "Rest, take a nap."
Looking at the old man's somewhat depressed and preoccupied face, Li Xia wondered what he was thinking about. She took her father-in-law
's arm and asked, "What's wrong? Something on your mind?" Wei Xi gave his daughter-in-law a complicated look, and as he stood up,
he glanced again at the spot that had been making him uneasy. Only then did Li Xia notice her father-in-law's gaze, which revealed
a hint of reluctance and a touch of melancholy.
Li Xia's face was flushed. She stood up and gently scolded, "You naughty old man, look like
you're sleepy, hmph." Her lips pouted at the opportune moment.
Looking at his alluring almond-shaped eyes, Wei Xi awkwardly averted his gaze, awkwardly shifting his position as he entered
the living room.
Looking at his straight back, Li Xia lowered her head, glancing at her full breasts, and chuckled
. She looked up at her father-in-law's back, shook her head after laughing, and like him, let out
a sigh, put away her stool, and went back to her room.
The melodious strains of "Fishermen's Evening Song" drifted from the television. Wei Xi, holding his child, sat on the edge of the kang (heated brick bed), watching
the weather forecast. He observed the changing weather over the past two days.
Nothing much to do that evening. Li Xia had taken a bath around 7 PM. A moment later, she came
in with a towel wrapped around her head and asked, "What did the weather forecast say?"
"Oh, it said it would rain, but the sky doesn't look like it's going to rain," Wei Xi said, coaxing the child.
"Weather forecasts aren't always accurate. Just let it rain." Li Xia shook the towel from her head, drying her hair.
Seeing her daughter-in-law's wet hair, Wei Xi quickly said, "Go blow-dry it. Don't let your hair get wet, okay?"
Li Xia stuck out her tongue and made a face at her father-in-law, "Yes, yes, yay!"
"This child, oh, right, why don't you go sit outside for a while? Don't stay cooped up at home," Wei Xi said, turning around to put
the child on the kang (a heated brick bed) and letting him crawl around .
From the opposite bedroom came his daughter-in-law's voice, "You go ahead, I won't go out. I need to feed
the child in a bit, and then I'll watch some TV."
Outside, on the roadside, men and women were sitting around under the lamp, fanning themselves with palm-leaf fans. Wei Xi went
over, offered them two cigarettes, and sat down on a small stool.
While chatting with the villagers, the topic turned to the issue of finding a spouse. Grandpa Wang and Grandma Wang
asked Wei Xi, "Old Xi, you haven't found a partner in the past two years. Your children are all married; you should think
about yourself. Don't always make yourself suffer."
Wei Xi swatted away a mosquito and said, "Sigh, I'm getting old. What's the point of talking about that? It'll only cause trouble for the children." Hearing Wei Xi's
argument, Grandma Wang scolded him, "What are you saying? You don't find a partner yourself, and
you didn't even take care of your daughter-in-law during her postpartum period!" "Afraid of gossip? Why are you so afraid of gossip? You're practically half-buried already,
still worrying about that? Your mind is too old-fashioned, we're much more open-minded than you."
Grandpa Wang Er chimed in, "That's right, you
're so old, still thinking about your Zongjian every day, when will it end? So many people are trying to find you a partner, you're so stubborn."
Hearing their scolding, Wei Xi took out a cigarette, smiling as he handed one to Grandpa Wang Er. "I say,
Second Brother, what can I say?"
"What do you have to say? What else can you say! Every family has its share of problems like this. I think you're just making a fuss,
" said Grandpa Wang San, taking a puff of his cigarette
. Seeing Wei Xi's determined attitude, Wei Xi cupped his hands and said, "I'll talk,
I'll talk. I'll
tell you in two years when my grandson is a little older." Hearing Wei Xi's irresponsible words, Grandpa Wang Er curled his lip and scoffed, "You, you put it off the year before
last, and then you put it off this year. I think you should just keep putting it off. I don't know what's going on in your old brain.
Don't you see how good your son and daughter-in-law are? They'd actually stop you from finding a partner. You're really something."
"Hehe, Second Brother, let me think about it, think about it, um, let me think about it, hehe," Wei Xi said, his head lowered
, laughing incessantly.
"I say, how can you be so unreliable? Sigh, I'm too lazy to talk to you anymore," Grandpa Wang finally stopped
talking. This Wei Xi was so stubborn, even his own older brother and sister couldn't do anything with him. Sigh, the neighbors in the neighborhood
only spoke up out of kindness, feeling that Old Xi had had a hard life. This time, it was the same as always, still
no result, so everyone had to give up.
The group of people continued to chat idly, when a Volkswagen Santana drove up, its headlights
blinding several people nearby. Grandpa Wang laughed and scolded, "It's that Da Biaozi again, that kid is out hunting for food again
." As he spoke, the car stopped beside the crowd.
The car window opened, and a rough, burly voice with a wide-open mouth shouted, "What the hell are you doing?
You seem to enjoy swatting mosquitoes." As soon as the voice came out, a group of women cursed, "Biaozi, you little bastard, you've been causing trouble again
!" At this moment, the man in the car noticed Wei Xi and called out, "Isn't this Uncle Xi?"
He then swayed out of the car, causing the Volkswagen Santana to wobble a couple of times.
Wei Xi nodded to Biaozi, who, being quite polite, stepped forward and offered him a cigarette. The others,
seeing this, jeered, "You only let Old Xi have his way, don't you even offer him a cigarette?" Biaozi tossed his shoulder-length hair and
said disdainfully, "I only respect Uncle Xi, so what? Don't give me any more nonsense." He then ignored the jeers.
After Biaozi's words, the jeers stopped.
"Going out so late again?" Wei Xi asked, taking a drag of his cigarette. "Oh, I was just planning to go out and have some fun,
Uncle Xi. Do you want to come with me?" Da Biaozi said with a grin. Before Wei Xi could speak,
a woman's voice interrupted, "Old Xi going out with you? Do you think Old Xi is that kind of person? Be careful, your
Uncle Xi might grab your arm!"
"Uncle Xi's back and arms are strong, I can't beat him. I just want to see what Uncle Xi is capable of,"
Da Biaozi said, staring at Wei Xi with a lecherous look in his eyes. Everyone in the village understood
what he meant.
Everyone in the village knew that Da Biaozi was involved in the underworld, and if you asked who he respected in the village, it was only Wei Xi. Don't let his forties fool you
; he's over six feet tall and burly, but when it comes to fists, kicks, and wrestling with Wei Xi, he's a complete
pushover. After a few encounters, Wei Xi easily defeated him, and Da Biaozi was convinced of his superiority.
"Go, go, go do what you're supposed to do," Wei Xi waved at Da Biaozi with a smile. "Uncle Xi, you
really aren't going? There's a good show tonight. I only told you because I saw you come back. They're not worthy of my telling you,
" Da Biaozi was still showing off. Grandpa Wang Er was already grinning from ear to ear. "Biaozi, just go. Don't be so stubborn
. You can't beat your Uncle Xi in a fight, and you can't even wrestle him. You're planning to compete in that area? You've really got
some skills."
Wei Xi finished his cigarette and shouted at Biaozi, "Go on, don't spoil your fun. If you're not going now, then
don't go at all. Turn off the engine and sit for a while." Hearing Wei Xi say this, Da Biaozi was humiliated
. After getting into the car, he muttered to himself, "It's definitely not going to work. Humph, this old guy, he chickened out this time." With
the roar of the engine, Da Biaozi's car gradually drove away.
The conversation had drifted back to Wei Xi, causing him considerable distress. A group of villagers, seemingly having found a topic of conversation again,
began gossiping. "Old Xi, don't you think your wife might have some kind of problem?" These kinds of comments naturally
teased Wei Xi, causing him to repeatedly bow and beg his neighbors for a while before they finally let him off the hook amidst
their laughter. Looking at his
reflection, Wei Xi went home, checked his reflection in the water vat, and then went into the east room.
His grandson was already asleep, and his daughter-in-law was sitting on the kang (heated brick bed), watching television.
A nonsensical, hilarious sound came from the TV, and his daughter-in-law would chuckle softly one moment
and then hug her thighs tightly the next.
Walking to the mirror, Wei Xi poured himself a glass of cold water, turned around, and gently asked, "What are you watching that's so funny?"
"Hmm, would you like some water?" This time, his daughter-in-law didn't answer.
Actually, Li Xia had also heard the door open and her father-in-law's question, but the exciting scenes on TV
were captivating her. This movie was an old film from many years ago, directed by Stephen Chow. It was called "A Chinese Odyssey," and
every time she watched it, she was moved to tears.
Wei Xi sat upright on the edge of the kang (a heated brick bed) and watched along, although he couldn't understand the Cantonese, he
could still read the subtitles.
The movie was nearing its end, and soon the classic song "A Lifetime of Love" began to play: "
The past is gone, never to return;
Red fallen leaves are buried in the dust;
Beginnings and endings never change;
You drift
beyond " A sea of bitterness churns with love and hate…
That lonely figure, that unwilling heart, that pure gaze tinged with melancholy, and
the hidden happiness gained after the kiss. That figure, who gave for love, who relinquished for love, who gained and lost, who
clearly gained again upon losing. That wistful, elusive feeling, expressed without regret, came from Supreme Treasure's lips
:
"Once, a sincere love was placed before me, but I did not cherish it. Only when I lost it did I
regret it deeply. Nothing in this world is more painful than this…
If God could give me another chance, I would say three words to that girl: 'I
love you.'
If I had to put a time limit on this love, I hope it would be… ten thousand years!"
Li Xia could no longer hold back; the tears welling in her eyes streamed down her cheeks, past her nose,
and to her lips. She stared intently at the television screen, watching the touching scene, murmuring, "Hidden
for five hundred years, that single drop of love."
Wei Xi couldn't understand the movie at all, nor what his daughter-in-law was saying
. As he watched, he noticed she was crying, her eyes glistening with tears, so pitifully
beautiful.
He silently took a tissue and handed it to her, but Li Xia, tears welling in her eyes, snatched it without hesitation, pouting her
alluring lips and saying, "Ten thousand years," her tearful face conveying an indescribable sorrow.
Wei Xi finally managed to stammer, "Ten thousand years is too long, cherish the present." In the darkness
beside the television, her father-in-law's words lingered in Li Xia's ears.
