[Yun Bie Zhuan] 4

Chapter Four: Asking the Question
At first, Li Yun planned to go to school, but as he approached, he suddenly remembered that his mother had already
asked for leave from school. Moreover, since he had left without saying goodbye, his mother would surely be searching
for him everywhere. And the school would likely be the first place she looked. Li Yun didn't want to see his parents at all. Turning around, he saw the rooftop of Xiangyun Temple in the distance…
“When people are confused, they often turn to some kind of religious belief.” Li Yun understood this well. “I
met a Taoist priest the day before, and today I've stumbled upon such an exciting thing. Could it be that this Taoist priest from Pingshan is
someone sent by heaven to answer my questions?” Li Yun's mind wandered, and he unconsciously walked towards Xiangyun Temple.
“Little friend, you need to buy a ticket to go in.”
Li Yun looked up and noticed a ticket window at the entrance of Xiangyun Temple. The woman selling tickets was in her thirties, with heavy
makeup. Far from being beautiful, she looked rather frightening in the dim light of the room.
“I need to buy a ticket here?” Li Yun was confused.
"Nonsense, this is a protected cultural relic site. Of course you have to buy a ticket to visit." The woman's thin lips casually
spit out sunflower seed shells as she looked at Li Yun with disdain.
Li Yun felt his pockets; he only had a few yuan notes, unsure if that would be enough... Just then, the woman buying tickets let out a
shriek. Li Yun looked up
and saw the Taoist priest, Ping Shan, standing in the ticket booth, one hand just removed from the woman's buttocks, smiling at him.
"You lecherous Taoist priest, do you want to die?!" The woman buying tickets was clearly very unhappy with Ping Shan's "sneak attack," glaring
fiercely at him.
The Taoist priest, however, was shameless, smiling and saying, "Sister Zhang, I know this young man. The ticket is free."
"You think you can just waive it? Who do you think you are?" The woman buying tickets didn't budge. But then she yelled again, and Ping
Shan's right hand inappropriately hooked around the woman's waist. The woman hurriedly pushed him away, giving the Taoist priest a rather amused look. She
turned her head away without saying a word. Ping Shan, all smiles, emerged from the main gate of the Taoist temple and led Li Yun into Xiangyun Temple.
Li Yun had actually known of Xiangyun Temple in the area; local records indicated it was built during the Jiajing era of the Ming Dynasty
and had historically been a royal Taoist temple. It suffered damage during the war at the end of the Ming Dynasty, with some buildings destroyed. After the founding of the People's Republic of China, the government invested heavily in
its reconstruction. However, Li Yun was engrossed in his studies and, while knowing the name, didn't know its location.
Once inside, Li Yun realized that Xiangyun Temple lived up to its name; carvings and murals of auspicious clouds were visible everywhere, and
even the reconstructed eaves and brackets were decorated with cloud motifs.
Ping Shan led Li Yun around several corners of the temple before arriving at his residence. Surprisingly, a sign hung at the entrance reading "XX City Taoist
Association XX Branch." Seeing this, Li Yun's depressed mood eased slightly, and he couldn't help but
tease Ping Shan: "Oh, so you're holding a position at the Taoist Association? You're eating the government's food. Don't be a charlatan
..."
Ping Shan, upon hearing this, became serious: "I've performed rituals at Longhu Mountain, I'm a real Taoist!"
"Which sect are you from? Quanzhen, Zhengyi, Lingbao, Shangqing, Shenxiao..." Li Yun asked.
Ping Shan looked surprised: "Good lad, you know all that? Not bad, not bad. You got the first one right, I'm from the Quanzhen sect."
"A disciple and grand-disciple of Wang Chongyang." Seeing that Ping Shan showed no displeasure, Li Yun became a little too arrogant. "Longhu Mountain is a Zhengyi sect sect,
so why are you holding a ritual there?"
Pingshan didn't seem to mind Li Yun addressing him as "a disciple and grand-disciple of Wang Chongyang," he simply shrugged and replied, "Who says the imperial
court only recognizes the Zhang Tianshi family?"
With that, the two, one big and one small, looked at each other without any regard for hierarchy and laughed heartily.
Once inside the room, Pingshan made Li Yun a cup of tea, treating him with the utmost hospitality, not like a child.
"I didn't expect it. I only invited you yesterday, and you've already come to visit today. It's truly beyond my expectations," Pingshan said
, looking at Li Yun with interest. Li Yun lowered his head, preoccupied with his own thoughts, but clearly this Taoist was not the right person to confide in. Moreover, it
concerned his family's secrets, which he couldn't reveal to an outsider.
"It's nothing, I just wanted to chat with you, Master," Li Yun stammered.
Pingshan, worldly-wise, easily discerned Li Yun's hesitant state of mind. However, Hirayama understood that he shouldn't pry into other people's
inner secrets, so he casually changed the subject. "You've read the Tao Te Ching, haven't you?"
"Yes, I've read it once," Li Yun nodded.
"Do you have any insights?" Hirayama asked.
"It should be called the Tao Te Ching, right..."
"A promising young man..."
As darkness fell, Li Yun turned and waved to the Hirayama Taoist who had seen him off, indicating that he didn't need to see him off any further. Then he strode towards the street corner.
Just as he turned the corner, someone grabbed his arm.
"You brat, where have you been? Do you know how worried your family is..."
Li Yun recognized the person and hurriedly called out with his head down, "Auntie..."
