【The Second Part of a Life Like an Illusion - Peach Blossom Spring】(2)

2. First Visit to Peach Blossom Spring
On the afternoon of February 6, 1977, after the distribution of report cards to each class, Nanlin No. 2 Middle School, where Tao Long studied, officially began its
winter vacation.
Tao Long had arranged a time and place to meet with Teacher Luo the day before, but after waiting for
two class periods in the teachers' dormitory, Teacher Luo hurriedly returned carrying large bags. It turned out he had decided to go to the street to buy
some local specialties and New Year's goods, which delayed Tao Long. Before giving Tao Long the key, Teacher Luo specifically instructed
him on two points: first, it was already close to evening, and for safety reasons, he suggested he go home the next day; second, he should take good care of
the hot air balloon.
Tao Long's original wish to rush home before dark to reunite with his mother was dashed, and he felt some resentment towards Teacher Luo: "
A well-fed man doesn't know the hunger of a starving man. I haven't been intimate with my mother for more than five months, and every night my penis is rock hard with nowhere to
go. Tonight I'll have to suffer for it again, sigh!"
Of course, Tao Long was a very polite student, and he would never show his dissatisfaction.
After receiving the key to the house with the hot air balloon from the teacher, he said "Thank you, Teacher Luo" twice and then returned to his dormitory.
Although he felt resentful at the time, later events proved that Tao Long should thank Teacher Luo. If he
had returned to Liujiazhuang that night, facing the heavily pregnant Liu Juan, while he wouldn't have been completely unable to do anything,
he certainly wouldn't have been able to enjoy himself. More importantly, being busy taking care of the pregnant woman would have meant missing his meeting with Tao Yun, and
his life might have had to be rewritten.
The next day, Tao Long got up as soon as the sun rose, eager to get home, and set off with his backpack.
Traveling west along the Baishui River, enjoying the scenery he hadn't had time to appreciate while walking, Tao Long felt quite content.
Upon reaching Tao Village, he should have flown north, crossing two mountains to reach Liujiazhuang. But then, a thought suddenly occurred to Tao Long
: every summer he swam in the river beside the village, yet he never knew where the river's source was. It was said that
some villagers had tried to swim upstream, but were always stopped by a small, fast-flowing waterfall only a few meters high
, and had to return disappointed. Today, he had the opportunity to find the source, so why not give it a try? No
sooner said than done, Tao Long continued westward and soon arrived at the small waterfall people had mentioned. The river wasn't wide, and the waterfall
wasn't wide either, only about six or seven meters wide. Both banks were steep cliffs; no wonder people couldn't climb it.
He flew along the winding river for another half hour, entering a north-south oriented canyon.
High mountains lined both sides; to the north were cliffs one or two hundred meters wide and thirty or forty meters high, with a waterfall eight or nine meters wide at its northwest corner.
The water rushed into a deep pool below the cliff and then flowed into the Baishui River.
Tao Long thought, this must be the source of the Baishui River. Just as he was about to return along the same path, he hesitated, wondering
what lay on the cliff. Having come this far, he figured he might not have another chance if he didn't go up and see for himself
. So he flew up.
It was incredible! It truly lived up to the saying, "There are heavens beyond heavens!" This was Tao Long's first impression upon reaching the top.
In what he thought was a very remote place, he found himself in the idyllic paradise described by Tao Yuanming: houses,
vegetable gardens, ponds, fruit trees, and a large herd of pigs, sheep, chickens, and ducks! However, he didn't see
any men or women working or any elderly people enjoying themselves.
Tao Long guessed that the owner of this land must be inside a house, so he walked towards the three houses side by side.
The doors of the houses on both sides were locked, though not fastened. The door of the middle house was open, and Tao
Long went straight into the main room.
He called out a few times, "Is anyone home?" Seeing no answer, Tao Long emerged from the half-open back door.
As soon as he stepped outside, Tao Long quickly spotted two people washing clothes in the northwest corner. Although he could only see their backs,
he was certain they were two women.
Tao Long hurried towards them. Afraid of startling them, he called out as he walked, "Hello!" Since he
didn't know their ages or what to call them, he simply said this.
Hearing his voice, the two women stood up and turned around. To their astonishment, a remarkably handsome young man stood before them
!
This place was extremely secluded; for nearly thirty years, no outsider had dared to venture here. It was surrounded by insurmountable
mountains on three sides and a sheer cliff on the other, making it impossible to enter without a secret passage. Could this young man, like them back then,
have endured countless hardships and trekked for days and nights to find this place? He thought it unlikely; it was winter
, and how could he possibly spend the night in the deep mountains and dense forests? He would surely freeze to death!
Tao Long also observed the two women. Judging by their ages, one was probably more than ten years older than his mother,
and the other was about the same age. He didn't know their relationship, nor whether
there was anyone else there besides them, but he didn't know where to begin asking.
The older woman (let's call her Woman A) broke the silence first: "Young man, what's your name? How did you
get in?"
Tao Long replied, "My name is Tao Long. I found this place by chance while piloting a hot air balloon. I'm sorry to bother you,
please forgive me, ladies."
The younger woman (let's call her Woman B) thought: His surname is Tao? What a coincidence. If Wen'er had married early,
her grandson would probably be this age by now. If he really is her grandson, then her and her mother's nearly thirty years of
waiting would definitely have been worthwhile. Just as she was about to ask, her mother spoke first.
At this moment, Woman A's thoughts were the same as Woman B's; she was particularly eager to find out Tao Long's identity:
"Your surname is Tao? Where are you from?"
Tao Long truthfully replied, "From Tao Village."
Woman B couldn't help but ask further, "What are your parents' names?"
"My father's name is Tao Dazhuang, and my mother's name is Liu Juan."
"Do you remember your parents' birthdays?" "
Of course I remember. My father's birthday is February 20, 1948, and my mother's is August 15, 1950.
" It
should be noted that these two women did not know the Gregorian calendar, only the Republic of China calendar. Tao Long converted it for them,
and they understood. For ease of reading, the Gregorian calendar will be used throughout.
The two women were excited again upon hearing this; what a coincidence that this boy's father and Wen'er shared
the same birthday! In their memory, Wen'er was the only boy born in the entire Tao Village in the first half of 1948.
If this boy's family wasn't an outsider who later moved to Tao Village, then he was definitely Wen'er's son.
They were blood relatives!
To further confirm that Tao Long was a descendant of the Tao family, the first woman asked,
"Tao Long, what are your grandparents' names?"
"My grandfather's name is Tao Yi, and my grandmother's name is Wang Shuihua."
It was now almost certain that Tao Long was Wen'er's son, and the two women's excitement was beyond words
. They knew very well that before they left Tao Village, Wang Shuihua had not given birth to any children, nor had
they heard of them adopting any. After they left Tao Village, both possibilities existed, but the latter
was extremely unlikely:
First possibility: The disabled Tao Jin was driven to desperation by Tao Yi and eventually died. Tao Wen
was then adopted by Tao Yi and renamed Tao Dazhuang. After reaching adulthood, Tao Dazhuang married Liu Juan and had Tao Long.
Second possibility: Tao Jin's family was safe and sound, and Tao Yi adopted a boy born on the same day as Tao Wen
, named him Tao Dazhuang, and after marrying, had a son named Tao Long.
After the three sat down on a bench nearby, the woman, convinced that Tao Long was her grandson, said,
"Long'er, based on your introduction, I can confirm that we are family. I am your biological grandmother,
Tao Yu. This is my mother, Tao Yun. It's just the two of us here; we haven't seen a stranger in nearly 30 years
. Today, finally, someone has come, and it turns out to be my own grandson! I'm so happy!"
Tao Long could hardly believe his eyes and ears. This woman, who was about the same age as his mother,
was actually his grandmother? So he cautiously asked,
"Really? You both look so young. How can one be my biological grandmother and the other my grandmother
's mother?"
Tao Yun smiled and said, "Perhaps it's the environment here that makes us look so young. Otherwise, how could we look so young?
Long'er, I won't lie to you; I'm actually 60 years old this year (by the traditional Chinese age reckoning), and your grandmother is 45."
After a surprised "Oh," Tao Long's mouth remained agape for a long time.
Since they were family, both sides should share their circumstances. Unsure if Tao Long could accept
the concept of incest, Tao Yun first inquired about his family situation.
Tao Long briefly explained his family's current situation: his grandparents had passed away, he had never met his father, and he and his mother
depended on each other for survival. He was attending junior high school in the county town and was planning to visit his maternal grandmother in Liujiazhuang during the winter vacation to reunite with his mother . He
had entered the village out of curiosity.
Tao Yun was puzzled: "Long'er, as far as I know, married daughters shouldn't live at their parents' home. Why
doesn't your mother live in Tao Village?"
At this moment, Tao Long regretted telling them that his mother lived at her parents' home. He couldn't possibly
reveal that he had gotten his mother pregnant; that would be too embarrassing. He absolutely couldn't let them know about this shameful incestuous affair that most people couldn't accept
. But he couldn't lie, so he could only stand there, his face flushed, without saying a word
.
Seeing Tao Long's embarrassed state, Tao Yun guessed that there might be a story between the mother and son, so she tentatively asked, "Long'er,
why aren't you answering? Is there something between you and your mother that you can't let outsiders know? We
are your elders, and we can accept whatever has happened. Just tell us boldly, and we
won't blame you."
Tao Long, feeling unable to speak, continued to lower his head and remain silent.
Tao Yun thought that if it were a normal matter, Tao Long would never be so reluctant to talk about it. Perhaps the mother and son
had already engaged in illicit relations, and adhering to the principle of not airing family shame in public, he didn't want to reveal it. Feeling that her guess was almost correct,
Tao Yun was secretly pleased. This boy truly lived up to his reputation as a descendant of the Tao family; even incest was something he knew by heart,
making his mother his woman at such a young age. She figured that no matter how much she pressed him, he wouldn't reveal the truth. Therefore
, she decided to tell him the Tao family's history of incest. Even if he and his mother had never had any romantic affairs, it didn't
matter. As a descendant of the Tao family, with a little guidance, he would surely be able to embark on the right path of incest.
So she said,
"Long'er, it doesn't matter if you don't want to tell me, but as a descendant of the Tao family, you must know our family
's history. You already know that your grandmother is my daughter, but what you don't know is that your grandmother and I share the same
father. Not only that, your grandmother also bore three children for our biological father, who was also our husband, and your father was
one of them."
Like a thunderclap from a clear sky, Tao Long was stunned. Such a thing existed in the world, and it happened in their
Tao family? It was unbelievable, so exciting! He thought that merely getting his mother pregnant was
a huge shameful thing, but compared to his ancestors, it was nothing. From Tao Yun's tone, it was clear that
in the Tao family, incest was a perfectly legitimate and glorious thing, something that didn't need to be hidden at all. Of
course, they only revealed the truth because they considered each other family; they would definitely keep it a secret from outsiders.
Seeing that Tao Long remained silent, Tao Yun assumed he was frightened by the chaotic relationships among the Tao family elders and quickly asked
, "Long'er, are you alright?"
But Tao Long was merely trying to calm his extremely agitated emotions. He knew very well that here, in
front of his elders, there was nothing he couldn't be honest about:
"Is it true? That's wonderful. Actually, compared to you, mine is nothing at all
. It's alright to tell you. My mother is pregnant with my child, and fearing gossip from the people of Tao Village, she went back to her parents' home."
"Long'er, you are truly a good descendant of our Tao family," Tao Yun and her daughter Tao Yu exclaimed sincerely
.
Tao Yu, somewhat worried about Liu Juan's return to her parents' home, asked, "Long'er, isn't your mother afraid of
what the people of Liu Village will say?"
Tao Long replied, "Last August, when I was going to study in the county town, my mother told me that no
one could know about our relationship, otherwise she wouldn't be able to face anyone. She also told me that her idea was to tell the people of Liu Village that
her husband had gone home for a few days and then left again, never to return, and that she was pregnant again. Because
there was no one at her husband's family, she had to go back to her parents' home; otherwise, who would take care of her as a pregnant woman?"
"I see," Tao Yu muttered to herself. Suddenly, she became very curious. Not to mention last year, even
now, Tao Long was still just a little boy; how had he slept with his mother? So she asked, "Long'er..."
"How did your relationship with your mother begin, how did it develop? Can you tell us?"
Having learned about the family's incestuous history, Tao Long had no more reservations and readily recounted his
experiences from the night of his 12th birthday until he entered junior high school over three months prior. (See Part I of this book, "Tao Le Ju")
Next, Tao Yun also recounted Tao Jin's incestuous history. (See Prequel I of this book, "The Story of Tao Jin")
After hearing the stories, Tao Long was extremely envious of Tao Jin's good fortune with women and deeply sympathetic to his tragic fate.
He also raised several questions he particularly wanted to know: first, Tao Jin's ultimate fate; second,
the whereabouts of Tao Yun's son, Tao Wu; and third, how Tao Yun and her daughter found this secluded paradise.
Tao Yun and her daughter answered each question.
The first question: The two never returned after escaping Tao Village that day; they didn't know
what happened to Tao Jin and Tao Yu afterward.
The second question: Tao Wu was normal as a child, but as he grew up, he became like a woman: delicate-skinned
and speaking in a sissy voice. What was particularly devastating was that his penis remained unchanged even at sixteen or seventeen
, showing no signs of development whatsoever. This greatly disappointed Tao Yun and Tao Yu, who hoped to have offspring through him. When he
remained like this into his twenties, the two women were utterly despondent. Six years ago, in the summer, Tao Wu tragically
drowned while playing by a pond.
The third problem: fearing being caught by Tao Yi if they took the main road, the two had no choice but to flee westward into the deep mountains and dense forests
. Fortunately, it was summer, so they didn't have to worry about accommodation. The two women took turns carrying Tao Wu, traveling by day and sleeping in the open at night
. Five days later, they finally arrived at the valley south of Peach Blossom Spring. After wandering around for more than half an hour, they discovered a
cave at the foot of the mountain to the east and went inside. Reaching the end of the cave, they fumbled around for a long time before accidentally triggering a mechanism,
opening the stone door, and entering Peach Blossom Spring.
After hearing this, Tao Long was both relieved that Tao Yun and her daughter had found Peach Blossom Spring and saddened by Tao Wu's misfortune.
After a long while, facing the two rather charming and beautiful women, a bold idea suddenly popped into his mind. But he dared not act rashly,
and cautiously probed:
"Grandma, Grandma's mother (a shortened form of 'Grandma's mother,' which Tao Long
made up on a whim because he didn't know what to call Tao Yun), please forgive me if I'm wrong. This is what I'm thinking: our Tao family
has a strong tradition of incest. My grandfather may no longer be alive, and my father is missing.
I'm the only man in our Tao family now. Can I understand that you two will belong to me
alone from now on?"
Tao Yun and Tao Yu did not answer, but nodded slightly in unison, their faces flushed.
Tao Long was overjoyed and shouted, "Great!" Unable to contain his excitement, he stood up,
put his arms around the two women, and whispered,
"Grandma, Grandma, you haven't seen a man's penis in almost 30 years. And me? Since I
separated from my mother, I haven't tasted the ecstasy of sex for over five months. Today, this is a godsend, a perfect opportunity for us
to reunite. Shall we go to the room now and have a good time, to celebrate that Peach Blossom Spring will no longer have
lonely men and women?"
The two women were naturally more than willing, but Tao Yun still had a shred of reason:
"Long'er, there's no rush. Let's wait until tonight. People often talk about the wedding night, or the bridal chamber,
which means these things are done at night..."
Seeing Tao Long about to interrupt, Tao Yun gestured to stop him and continued:
"Actually, day or night doesn't matter to me. The key is that before the three of us get together, there are two things you absolutely
must do. First, you must go to Tao Village and see if Tao Yi left anything that can prove your father
is Tao Wen. Although the possibility that your father isn't Tao Wen is extremely slim, if there's
evidence that your father is your grandmother's biological son, your grandmother and I can confidently give ourselves to you."
Tao Long felt that Tao Yun's words made a lot of sense: "I was indeed too hasty, Grandma, Mom, I'm sorry. What if my
father really was adopted by Tao Yi (after learning about Tao Yi's evil deeds, Tao Long no longer called him Grandpa but addressed him by his name) from somewhere else
, and his birthday happens to be the same day as Grandma's son? Then I wouldn't have any blood relation with either of you,
and I shouldn't have had any physical contact with you." "Of course, to be honest, although you are not young, your faces and
figures are more charming than those of women in their thirties outside Taoyuan. I sincerely hope that you are my real grandmother and my real grandmother
's mother. Oh, Grandma, is there something else I must do?"
Tao Yun said, "After you go to Tao Village, you must also go to Liu Family Village. If you have
evidence that your father is your grandmother's biological son, you can bring your mother here, and you can live a life of one husband and three wives.
In ten or twenty years, you will definitely have many children and grandchildren. If your father is not Tao Wen, you should also go to Liu Family Village and
live with your mother. Of course, if you want to become a real couple with your mother without others knowing, this
is your ideal home."
Tao Long, quite surprised by Tao Yun's words, asked:
"Grandma, you mean even if I weren't your relative, you'd still let my mother and me live
here?"
"Yes, the fact that you found this place means you and my mother and I are destined to meet. Living together means we can
look after each other, and besides, there's a house here, and all our daily necessities are readily available. We're getting old;
if you don't move in, this place might become deserted. But you must promise me two things: first, you can't
mention this place to any outsiders; second, you can't make any advances towards us. Until we meet our direct descendants, we
'll remain chaste for life."
Tao Long quickly agreed: "Grandma, don't worry, I'll definitely do it."
Then, Tao Yun continued washing clothes and told Tao Yu to prepare lunch early.
After lunch, Tao Long immediately left Taoyuan and headed to Tao Village. When he arrived home, he realized the key was with his mother
.
How could such a small matter stump Tao Long? He quickly ran into the village store and bought a lock. Then,
he borrowed a hammer from a neighbor, quickly smashed the old lock, entered the house, and went straight to
the room where Tao Yi had lived for decades.
After scanning the items in the room, Tao Long determined that the secret was in a wooden box. He then broke the small lock, and soon...
He found a small red notebook wrapped in newspaper.
After reading it, Tao Long learned that the truth basically matched Tao Yun's speculation: the siblings Tao Jin and Tao Yu chose
to die rather than live in dishonor, ultimately committing suicide by self-immolation. Tao Yi adopted Tao Wen and renamed him Tao Dazhuang. However, whether
due to negligence or forgetfulness, Tao Yi didn't mention Tao Juan (i.e., Liu Juan). Perhaps he thought the girl was a financial
burden, and since she was missing, he assumed she had never been in his house.
At this moment, Tao Long was filled with excitement. A first-year junior high student, he was about to experience the blissful life of one husband and three wives—
how could he not be excited?
Taking the notebook, locking the door, and returning the hammer, Tao Long rushed to his maternal grandfather's house in Liu Family Village.
Upon entering, Tao Long saw Liu Juan sitting upright in a chair, her belly protruding. However,
three middle-aged women were beside her, talking to her.
Because Tao Long had accompanied Liu Juan to Liu Family Village many times, these three women recognized him. They greeted him warmly
and then briefly explained the passing of his maternal grandparents.
It turned out that both of Tao Long's grandparents had fallen seriously ill and, lacking the funds for treatment, had passed away within half a month of each other
; his grandmother had only been buried a few days prior.
These three kind-hearted neighbors, deeply sympathetic to Liu Juan's profound grief and impending childbirth, voluntarily visited her
home daily to care for her and provided her with all three meals. Having already eaten lunch and washed the dishes, they
routinely sat down to chat with Liu Juan.
Upon hearing the devastating news, Tao Long was naturally heartbroken and immediately asked one of the women to take him to
the graves of his parents to pay his respects. On the way back, he thought that since his grandparents were gone, he and his mother could now
live in Taoyuan without any worries. He quickly came up with a reason for leaving Liu Family Village.
Back at Liu Family Village, Tao Long first thanked the three neighbors for their meticulous care of his mother, then told them that
his father had a good job in Nanlin, but was too busy to leave. He had come today on his father's behalf
to take his mother to Nanlin. He told Liu Juan that her father had prepared everything, and she only needed to bring a change of
clothes.
A little over ten minutes later, Liu Juan reluctantly said goodbye to the three women. Tao Long then took Liu Juan on a hot air balloon ride towards
Taoyuan
