Spring in the North

Chapter 1
"Get up, honey! Get up, honey!" A sweet, soft female voice woke me from my sleep. Out of habit, I rolled over, and groggily picked up the phone I'd carelessly tossed on the bedside table the night before. Damn it, the phone ringing in the middle of the night, it can't be anything good.
Too lazy to open my eyes, I instinctively flipped open the phone: "Hello! Who is this?" The first sentence was purely out of habit, the second was the real purpose of the question.
"Old Cuo, where are you having fun?" Through the flip-open receiver, Tan Huo's lazy yet seemingly blissful voice drifted over, so clear in the northern night at two in the morning. The call quality on the C network was definitely different; I could almost hear Tan Huo's pounding heartbeat in the cold Shanghai night.
"Damn it," I cursed, feeling a pair of warm little hands slowly exploring my genitals. "Why do you have to bother me at 2 AM? I thought some major project had gone wrong and our communications had been down for hours."
Tan Huo chuckled and mocked, "Come on, with that crappy equipment your company uses, it's bound to malfunction someday. You're probably used to it by now."
That wasn't far from the truth. While I personally think the company's equipment isn't the best in the industry, it's still constantly being shipped all over the country. In my four years in the business, I've practically traveled all over China.
Our line of work is euphemistically called the IT industry, but it's really just the "getting kicked" industry—always ready to be kicked by the boss, kicked by the users. I've lost count of how many nights I've been dragged out of bed by my boss, catching the fastest trains and night flights to put out fires in all directions, only to be yelled at by those suckers. As the contractor, I can only meekly agree, always having to tuck my tail between my legs and act like a grandson.
The small hands beneath me caressed my sensitive areas for a moment, igniting a fire within me. One large hand then moved to the delicate nipple of the woman beside me, giving it a gentle pinch. The woman seemed to feel the pain, letting out a soft moan. The sound was incredibly alluring, reminding me of her joyful singing in bed last night.
"Hey, where did you find this beauty? Let Brother Tan say a few words to her!" This guy's ears were sharp; he'd even heard that soft noise on the other end of the phone.
"Don't be silly. If you're not afraid Fang Ning will skin you alive, your brother will find you ten or eight, to make you feel beautiful and satisfied to the fullest." Tan Huo let out a "Oh dear," followed by a woman's soft laughter, a familiar voice.
"Oh, Fang Ning's here too. Well, forget I mentioned it earlier." Hearing Fang Ning's voice, the image of a woman connected to her surfaced in my mind. I gently shook my head, as if trying to banish the lingering image.
"Hi, Chen Cuo, how are you?" Fang Ning's voice was as sweet as ever. One of the two beauties of the Foreign Languages Department back then, I wonder how she's blossomed now.
A wave of emotion welled up inside me, and I said, "Oh, Fang Ning, my sister, I've missed you so much!" Fang Ning giggled, and I could almost see her swaying.
"Still such a sweet tongue, no wonder you can charm girls. Tell me, where is this girl from?" Women are only interested in men and other women—that's so true, and even an outstanding girl like Fang Ning is no exception.
"Oh, I miss you so much, and you only care about other girls, that's so disrespectful. No way, I need to hug you, that'll make me feel better." "Hehe, I don't mind, your good brother is going to chop you up." Immediately afterward, I heard Tan Huo's exaggerated shout: "Damn it, Chen Cuo, I'll chop you up!" Hearing those familiar shouts and laughter, a warm feeling washed over me, as if I were back on my university campus. I could vaguely see Tan Huogao standing on the upper bunk, left hand on his hip, right hand
raised high, loudly proclaiming, "Your Highness, come forward and take a closer look. It says—Qin Xianglian, she's thirty-two years old—suing the current imperial son-in-law—" I shouted from below, "You little brat, get down here! Don't trample my bed—"
Lost in these memories, Fang Ning's voice came from the other end of the phone: "Don't change the subject. Tell me quickly, where is this girl from?"
I glanced at the hot female body beside me, but she had her face hidden by her long, flowing hair, making it impossible for me to see her true features. I sighed inwardly. Even in their line of work, there was dignity.
"No, no, she's not from anywhere. I just picked her up randomly." "As soon as she finished speaking, the woman beside her twitched slightly, as if suppressing some feelings in her heart.
"Hey, you're not that kind of person." Fang Ning, of course, didn't believe her. Although she had been immersed in society for several years, her life was all about beauty. How could she understand the mentality of people like us who had been away from home for so long?
"Oh, I'm not that kind of person? Then who is?" I was still grateful for her trust. Although I had missed the opportunity to repay her with my body, I could still repay her with my heart.
"Who is that kind of person? Don't you know? Tan Huo." Fang Ning's voice became clearer and clearer, followed by Tan Huo's loud cry: "I'm wronged! I'm more wronged than Dou E!" I
smiled inwardly. Fang Ning really knew how to deal with Tan Huo. Back when Tan Huo was pursuing Fang Ning, he always described to me how gentle and considerate she was to him. I was sick of hearing it. Later, I said, "If she were truly gentle and considerate, she would tolerate you taking a concubine." Tan Huo never said another word after that. Today's scene finally proved what I said back then.
It also reminded me of when we were running the school's BBS. Tan Huo was the deputy site administrator and moderator of the Love section. On the newly created Love section's entry page, he left a famous saying that is still widely circulated in the W University Love community: "In the struggle between male and female, if the male does not conquer the female, he will inevitably be conquered by the female." "
Today, Tan Huo's words seem utterly pointless, but back then, he became famous overnight with just that one sentence, known throughout the entire school, and ultimately won the heart of his sweetheart. If those girls who idolized him back then knew that their hero had ultimately been 'conquered by a woman,' I wonder how heartbroken they would be."
After a moment of silence, Fang Ning, seeing that I wasn't joking, cautiously asked, "Are you serious?" I softly hummed in agreement and said, "I'm currently on a business trip in City C, and there's a woman sleeping next to me. Is that true or false?"
Fang Ning was silent for a long time before sighing, "Chen Cuo, don't be like that!" I chuckled, "What do you mean by 'like that'? Isn't it bad?"
Fang Ning said, "Don't laugh. It really isn't good for you. I still prefer the you from back then." I scoffed, "You liked the me from back then? Then why didn't you confess to me back then?" "
You—" Fang Ning was taken aback by my sharp retort and was speechless, I could almost see his angry glare.
Tan Huo's voice came through: "Kid, don't bully my wife." "Go to hell! You two woke me up in the middle of the night, can't I get my revenge?" "
Hehe, we're just doing our rounds."
I was about to tease him when I heard Fang Ning's serious voice: "Chen Cuo, listen to me." "Hey, sister, I'll heed your teachings." I sat up, leaned against the bed, found a pack of cigarettes I'd left on the bedside table yesterday, took one out, and just as I put it to my lips, I heard a "snap," and a flame appeared. It was the woman who hadn't moved an inch, lighting my lighter.
"Thank you!" I said softly. "Thank you? Thank you for what? I haven't even said anything yet!" Fang Ning on the other end of the phone had clearly misunderstood, "What was that sound just now? It was so loud!"
I chuckled and said, "It's nothing, I'll just call the waiter to bring me a coffee, then I'll listen to Fang Meiren's lecture." "Stop talking nonsense." Fang Ning naturally didn't believe my nonsense, and knew that this kind of rambling was endless, so she quickly became serious and said, "Chen Cuo, aren't we friends?"
This was quite a leap, but anyone with a brain knows how to answer: "Of course, we're best friends."
She dated Tan Huo for four years in college, and I wrote love letters for Tan Huo for four years, most of which were given to her by Tan Huo—of course, a small portion disappeared. Tan Huo's official explanation to me was—I folded paper airplanes, wiped my pen in class, lost them while walking, etc.
One afternoon, I happened to see one of my masterpieces at the hands of a younger girl, and that morning Tan Huo's explanation to me was—I forgot to bring toilet paper and had to make do. Of course, only Tan Huo and I knew these things; Fang Ning didn't know before, doesn't know now, and never will.
Tan Huo was afraid I'd reveal his secret, so he resorted to torture, coercion, and even enticement (he promised to introduce me to a beautiful woman, but never did, even after I graduated from university). He was practically ready to kill me to silence me.
Spending time with them, I even became familiar with Fang Ning, who kept clamoring to introduce me to a girlfriend. That's how those stories in my heart came about, but I don't want to think about them anymore.
"Chen Cuo, thank you for treating me as a friend." The sincerity in Fang Ning's voice moved me. "But as friends, I have some things I want to say to you."
I gently closed my eyes, exhaled a few smoke rings, then opened them again, watching them condense, take shape, and finally dissipate. Then I let out a long breath and said, "Go ahead."
Fang Ning was silent for a moment, then said, "Chen Cuo, forget about Aqi."

Chapter Two
A dull ache throbbed in my heart, as if a healed wound had been reopened.
Suppressing my emotions, I said softly, "Who is Aqi?" Fang Ning didn't speak. I took a few deep drags on my cigarette, tightened my grip on Bei Lei's right hand, and the woman beside me trembled again.
"Chen Cuo, suppressing yourself will only hurt you. Open your heart, and you'll have a better future." Fang Ning's words sounded as pale and powerless as a textbook to me.
I chuckled, "Have you been watching too many romance movies? These words are only good for fooling young girls experiencing their first love."
Fang Ning wasn't angry at all: "You know what I mean. You can't forget Aqi, so you degrade yourself, you just find any woman. But what good will that do? A night of pleasure might make you temporarily forget Aqi, but what about when you wake up in the morning? If Aqi has taken root in your heart, you can't cut her away with a knife."
Women are indeed natural orators. If Tan Huo had said these words to me, I probably would have scolded him to death long ago. It's just a pity that Fang Ning is saying these words to me now; no one in the world is more suitable to say them than her.
"Fang Ning, I'm very grateful to you. If it weren't for you, I wouldn't have met Aqi." Every time I mention Aqi's name, my heart trembles. Four years. It's been four years since I last saw Aqi. In this industry where time flies, four years is definitely not a short period. What is she like now? Is the man she leans on as happy as I was back then?
"I almost wish you had never met," Fang Ning's soft voice drifted over. I smiled bitterly to myself. Back in the days when Tan Huo and I were the stars of the show, how could I not know Aqi, one of the two beauties of the Foreign Languages Department?
"If you hadn't met her, you might still be the same Chen Cuo you were before." Women always like to make meaningless assumptions, and worse, they often move men, just like I am now.
I stubbed out my cigarette in the ashtray. Perhaps talking about love with women is a man's biggest mistake, because they are always faithful theorists and practitioners.
I sighed and said, "Fang Ning, let's not talk about Aqi anymore, okay? Especially not now." Fang Ning didn't speak, which I took as tacit agreement, and quickly asked, "How are you two doing now? Are you and Tan Huo doing alright?"
Without talking about love with women, Fang Ning lost her motivation and said wearily, "You should talk to Tan Huo about this." She then handed the phone to Tan Huo.
I wasn't so polite to Tan Huo: "You little brat, letting your wife lecture me in the middle of the night, that's really not fair. I'll expose you if you're not careful."
Tan Huo chuckled darkly, "Expose me? Too late, it's already a fait accompli, oh dear—" I didn't even need to look to know that this guy had fallen for Fang Ning's trick again.
After they quieted down, I continued, "How are things now? Is everything going smoothly?" A familiar "click" came from the other end of the line as Tan Huo lit a cigarette, his voice low: "If everything were going smoothly, would I be calling you in the middle of the night?" "Hehe, you don't even know what 'grown-up smoker' means. I mean, I watched him smoke since he was a kid, from one yuan a pack to two yuan a pack, and now to sixty yuan a pack. Ah, the years go by—" I sighed, though it was a joke, I was genuinely sentimental.
"Come on, stop with the fluff. Old Cuo, I have something to tell you." Tan Huo's leisurely tone made it hard for me to discern his thoughts.
"Oh, what is it? Is there a little one who can't wait to call me uncle, haha—"
This time even Fang Ning didn't let me off the hook: "Chen Cuo, I'm going to chop you up—" But the man's magnanimity was on full display again at this moment. Tan Huo said: "Old Cuo, stop joking. I got fired—" "What?" I was genuinely shocked. The company Tan Huo worked for, L, was once a global leader in the industry. I can't say how well Tan Huo did in his four years there, but I know very well the background of a prominent figure at W. With Tan Huo's level, he was definitely no worse than anyone else. Although the entire industry is in a slump right now, and there were rumors of layoffs at Company L a while ago, what does that little rumor matter in the context of widespread layoffs in the industry?
"Why fire you? You've been there for four years! Damn, in this industry, in this day and age, to stay at one company for four years is practically a miracle."
I was a little angry, perhaps because Tan Huo's experience was so similar to mine, giving me a sense of déjà vu.
"It's because I'm a long-time employee, and my salary is higher than others, that's why the boss wants to fire me. Damn it, this guy even said he'd consider my feelings and ask me to resign voluntarily."
Tan Huo's voice was slow and low, but I couldn't detect any sadness in it.
"So what are you going to do? Change companies?"
"Lao Cuo, I don't know how you feel, but I just feel incredibly tired working in this industry. The boss puts you under pressure day and night, trying to squeeze every last drop of blood out of you. Sometimes I just want to sleep for ten days straight and never wake up again."
Tiredness is probably a common feeling for people in this industry, but what does it matter if you're tired? If you earn a much higher salary than others in other industries, you must put in more effort. I didn't say this to Tan Huo, because everyone understands this principle, and Tan Huo, having been in the industry for quite some time, certainly understands it more thoroughly than others.
"Old Cuo, are you still planning to continue? Have you thought about what to do in the future?" The future? Tan Huo's words struck a chord within me; a question I had long dared not face was finally laid bare before me. In the IT industry, probably ninety percent of people don't know what to do in the future. Unfortunately, I am one of them.
I sighed, "I haven't thought about it, I don't know." Tan Huo probably already anticipated my answer: "I'm thinking about it too. To be honest, although the salary at Company L is considerable, I don't know why, but I've long lost the motivation to continue. Now, this is perfect, it's helped me make up my mind."
After a moment of silence, Tan Huo continued, "I don't want to go to other companies either. To be honest, several companies have been trying to poach me, and the salaries are decent, but I just don't want to go. Going there would just be working for someone else. I don't even want to stay at Company L, the industry leader, so what's the point of going anywhere else?"
I absolutely believed him. Once you've seen the ocean, you can't be satisfied with a river; many people have had this feeling. "That's because you've reached a mountaintop, but can't find a higher peak to climb. Losing your direction and unable to find your bearings, you naturally lack the motivation to move forward."
My lecture earned me Tan Huo's disdain: "Fine, fine, if you spent another two or three years in this industry, you'd definitely earn the title of the top philosopher. It seems W University's environment is truly nurturing, producing another talent like you."
W University has a history of over a hundred years, making it one of the top universities in China. With this historical accumulation, a specific humanistic atmosphere naturally forms, and W University is renowned in China for its humanities programs, having produced many philosophers throughout its history.
Like most comprehensive universities in China, its humanities programs are exceptionally strong, while its engineering programs are only average. Because I admired W University's humanistic atmosphere but didn't want to specialize in humanities, I chose W University's engineering program.
Tan Huo, on the other hand, was different. In his words, he was tired of Beijing and wanted to escape the cage and have some fun. He inexplicably chose W University, inexplicably chose engineering, and inexplicably ended up sharing a bunk bed with me.
"So what are you planning to do?" I really couldn't think of any suggestions Tan Huo could come up with.
"Old Cuo, have you ever thought about being your own boss?" Tan Huo asked mysteriously. A thought flashed through my mind—did this kid have some ulterior motive?
"Yes, I dream about it. Being a boss is so cool! Owning your own office building, living in a villa, driving luxury cars, having mistresses, and money and beautiful women rolling in."
"Damn it, stop daydreaming." Tan Huo expressed his indignation at my wishful thinking: "Seriously, have you ever thought about it?"
"Of course I have, but—andmakeup.com">2012 Chinese Subtitles Video HD Online Play—" "But what?" Tan Huo was clearly getting excited. "But I don't have the money, haha." "I seemed to hear Tan Huo sigh on the other end of the phone, and then say, 'I don't have any money either.' '
The Prince Consort—step forward and examine it closely. It says—Qin Xianglian is thirty-two years old—suing the Prince Consort of the current dynasty—' 'Lang ge lang ge ge lang—'
I accompanied him through the microphone.
"Put that petition on my—ha-ha-ha—ha—" Damn, Tan Huo's singing is really good. Through the receiver, Tan Huo's high-pitched voice seemed to float in the sky above the city. This Peking Opera is truly a national treasure.
Before he could finish laughing, I shouted, "Okay, hang up, let me kiss my dear Fang beauty again, haha—"
Tan Huo had only laughed halfway when he heard me and hurriedly said, "Hey, you little rascal—" Amid Fang Ning's scream, I hung up the phone. Looking at the call time displayed on the phone, forty-five minutes, good heavens, these two gave me a whole lesson. They know I don't need to worry about phone bills, the company reimburses me.
I sighed, turned on the bedside lamp, the light as soft as a woman's hand, gently caressing my whole body, and a trace of warmth returned to my heavy mood.
A slender hand reached out from under the covers and touched the phone that had just finished the call: "Can I see your phone?"
