Chapter Thirty-One: Understanding the Heart
However, this look was likely just an unconscious expression from his mother when she was relaxed. In thirteen years,
this was the first time Li Yun had seen his mother look at him like this. Perhaps she had it in his childhood, but
how could a young child understand the subtlety of it? In fact, it was only in the last two years that Li Yun gradually realized the beauty of his mother's appearance

"You saw everything last night…" his mother asked softly, her head lowered.

"Do you hate Mom?" The mother also felt this made it difficult to face her son honestly, so
as she spoke, she stared at the bedsheets, her gaze flickering.
"Hmm, a little..." Li Yun initially wanted to say he didn't care too much, which was actually his true
feeling. Because when he saw his mother having affairs with the man in the trench coat in the park and with Uncle Jun in the hospital, Li Yun didn't
feel hatred towards his mother, only a slight dissatisfaction that she had concealed everything. But
if he answered like that now, it probably wouldn't be befit his role as a son. So, Li Yun slightly changed
his answer.
"Mom is a normal woman, she has needs in certain areas..." The mother paused, knowing her son
was knowledgeable, and probably already had some understanding of sex and emotions. Therefore, she intended to tentatively
gain her son's understanding.
"Aren't Dad and Uncle Jun enough... Oh, I'm sorry, Mom!" Li Yun immediately realized
his rashness as soon as he opened his mouth.
Her mother looked up at Li Yun. She wasn't surprised that Li Yun mentioned her father, but the mention
of Xu Tiejun surprised her. Xu Tiejun wasn't one of the two men from the previous night; Li Yun even
knew about her affair with Xu Tiejun. Her mother seemed lost in thought…
"So you know about Mom and your Uncle Jun too? It seems you know a lot… In that case, Mom
has nothing to hide."
Her mother thought for a moment, seemingly organizing her thoughts. Then she continued, "Your father has been busy with work these past few years
and hasn't had much time to spend with Mom. When he comes home, he just sleeps, maybe asks about you, and then
goes back to work. Mom is lonely…"
"…Lonely?" The text message from that unknown number flashed through Li Yun's mind.
"So Mom couldn't resist secretly finding a lover outside. Your Uncle Jun, I guess... but he
knows your Dad and has his own family. Mom and he have an agreement that no matter what, it can't affect their respective families
. And your Uncle Jun is a very busy man; he only sees Mom a few times a year. And sometimes Mom
really can't resist, so she goes out to find someone from time to time..." The mother hesitated for a moment, bit
her lip, and finally made up her mind to say it. "...to find some men. But Mom didn't
have much interaction with those men. It was all just casual flings."
"Was it a one-night stand?" Li Yun asked, also looking down.
"I think that's what they call it now." The mother answered as if talking to herself.
The mother and son fell silent... not knowing what to say next. Seeing that his mother's expression was becoming more and more
depressed, Li Yun felt that he couldn't torture his mother any longer, so he gritted his teeth and spoke.
"Mom, I'm your son. No matter what you do, one thing won't change:
you're my mother. And as your son, I really have no right to interfere in your private life! So,
if you really need me to, I'll pretend I know nothing. Don't worry about Dad, I won't tell.
And..." Li Yun paused, then finally said, "And some of the things Dad did might not have
been fair to Mom."
With that, Li Yun abruptly stood up, preparing to leave the room. The atmosphere inside was
too oppressive for him. He felt he couldn't bear it. Just as he was about to take a step, his mother spoke.
"Mom won't go out anymore. Over the years, Mom has always felt guilty, always feeling that what I did
was wrong to you. Now that you've found out, how could Mom possibly do those things again!"
Li Yun stopped in his tracks. The mother continued, "Don't tell me about your father... I
know everything about him! I've never blamed him... Actually, he might have suffered even more than I have.
So, if you can understand me, please forgive him too!" Li Yun turned around in surprise.
He hadn't expected his mother to know about his father's affair, and he couldn't understand why she would defend him.
His mother looked up at the ceiling and said slowly, "Your father loved another
woman... but because your grandfather forced him, he married me. Your father is different from you; he's very filial,
or perhaps more accurately, obedient. He always complied with your grandfather's requests. So, even though he
didn't want to, he still married me."
"Why is that?" Li Yun, who had never known there was more to his parents' marriage than met the eye, quickly asked
.
"Because someone said that Mom's face was better than that woman's, your grandfather insisted that your father marry me
. Well... Mom has said a lot and is tired. Xiaoyun, I'm really happy that you understand me.
There are some things I want to think about quietly by myself. You must be tired too, so you should rest early."
Hearing her mother's words, Li Yun suddenly recalled the seemingly unintentional words of the Taoist priest Pingshan:

Seeing her mother lying lazily on the bed, looking desolate, Li Yun suddenly went to her side.

quickly fled her room before she could react, her eyes wide with shock. As he closed the door, he said,
"Goodnight, Mom."
His mother stared blankly at the closed door, then couldn't help but chuckle softly. "That rascal,
he's learned how to make women happy! Looks like he has a girlfriend..."
