Prologue:

1998 was truly a year of disaster!

The Southeast Asian financial crisis raged on, leaving the once-proud Four Asian Tigers

battered and bruised , licking their bloodied wounds.

Large-scale anti-Chinese riots erupted in Indonesia, with tens of thousands of ethnic Chinese subjected to organized abuse and murder, and hundreds of

thousands of displaced Indonesian Chinese flooding into Taiwan.

My family also underwent a dramatic change: my 38-year-old father

lost his job as a taxi driver—a job he'd held for over a decade—in a car accident (well, he hit someone else). To pay compensation and to prevent him from going to jail,

we had to sell our new house, which we'd only lived in for two years; my 18-year-old sister was about to graduate from vocational high school but still unemployed;

and my 36-year-old stay-at-home mother had to carefully manage her meager savings to cover the family's daily

expenses. As for me, although I was a boy, what could a junior high school student do?

The world suffered, and so did my family!

Thankfully, things weren't completely hopeless. With the help of my dad's good friend, Uncle Hai, our family temporarily rented Uncle Hai's ancestral home.

Our whole family (excluding me, of course, as I still had to study) partnered with Uncle Hai in a small business.

No one told me what kind of business it was; perhaps everyone felt it wasn't necessary to tell a middle school student. All I knew was that my dad was

in charge of purchasing the goods, my mom and sister were in charge of sales, and Uncle Hai provided the capital and the premises.

As the business took off, new changes occurred at home: my dad had to go to purchase goods early every day, and by

the time I woke up, he was already out the door; my sister worked the day shift, and I didn't know what time she started, but she would usually

see me around 8 pm before heading out again to enjoy her vibrant nightlife; my mom worked the night shift,
