The Journey [Full Text]

A pumpkin head walked into the bar.

It was Halloween Eve, so he left his broom and a troop of bats pulling it in the parking lot outside.

He ordered a Bloody Mary and some peanuts, and as the people in the bar stared at it, a pair of teenagers smirked and slipped out.

Pumpkin Head drank his beverage and went outside, only to find his broom and bats gone. He frowned and went back into the bar.

He roared and shoved the door open. Flames suddenly burst from the bar's ceiling, tearing it open, and a huge, malevolent, blood-red eye appeared, staring at the people in the bar.

'Now that I have your attention,' Pumpkin Head declared, 'I now announce that my name is the Great Lantern Jack, and on Halloween Eve, someone has just stolen my broom and bats, which has made me very angry. Who stole them?'

Everyone in the bar fell silent and stared wide-eyed.

Jack glared at the people, studying them. 'I'm going to tell a story,' he concluded. 'When I tell it [the whole story], if my broom and bats don't appear where I left them, then I will do what I did five hundred years ago when people took my broom and bats. Even I don't want to do what I did five hundred years ago again.'

The bar fell silent.

'Bartender,' he bit his finger hard, 'another Bloody Mary, on your tab.'

The bartender's quick submission to the eye in the ceiling was terrifying.

Pumpkin Head drank his beverage and then spoke: 'As I said, my name is Jack. On Halloween, I travel the world, creating horror stories unlike the bleak lives of people. I've been doing this since the first Halloween thousands of years ago, so I have many stories to tell.'

'My story goes like this…'

What parts of our world must exist the way they operate, and which parts operate in a way that everyone agrees on? Are

we really sure we'd rather have profound, painful abstinence than pleasurable pleasure? If so, why?
