"Hey! Have you packed your things yet? We'll be downstairs in 10 minutes!"

"Oh... okay! I've packed everything... see you later."

One summer morning during junior high, I hung up my mother's phone. We had made plans to
go to the beach together a long time ago, because we might not see each other much in the future. My mother was planning
to remarry in six months.

My parents divorced when I was a baby, and my mother abandoned me. So my father raised me
. Perhaps they had some kind of agreement, because my mother would occasionally come to see me, but the number of times she visited
could be counted on one hand. So I didn't have much of a relationship with her. Because my mother
maintained very well, I felt more like a somewhat unfamiliar
older sister than a mother.

A black sedan pulled up downstairs shortly after. My mother got out of the driver's seat and opened
the trunk. She was dressed impeccably today—a black long-sleeved fitted top with a leopard-print mini-skirt, her legs in sheer flesh-colored
stockings that shimmered alluringly, and gold high heels. I couldn't help but stare at
her body, my eyes widening.

"What are you doing? Put the luggage down here!"

"Um...oh...okay!"
