Zhishen said, "That's right." He went to the room and took out a solid iron staff, five feet long from head to tail and weighing sixty-two pounds. Everyone was astonished, exclaiming, "How can he move his arms if they're not as strong as a water buffalo!" Zhi Shen took the weapon and wielded it with practiced ease; his movements were flawless. The crowd cheered. Standing by the gap in the wall was an official, wearing a blue gauze turban with pointed ends; two white jade rings adorned his temples; a single green silk robe with floral patterns; a double-otter silver belt; and black boots with claw-shaped toes; holding a folding paper fan from Sichuan; he had a leopard's head and round eyes, a swallow's collar and tiger's beard, and was about eight feet tall and thirty-four or thirty-five years old. He said, "This master is truly extraordinary, wielding his weapon well!" The ruffians said, "This teacher's praise must mean he's good." Zhi Shen asked, "Who is that officer?" The crowd replied, "This official is Lin Chong, the instructor of the 800,000 Imperial Guards' spear and staff techniques." Zhi Shen said, "Why not invite him over?" Instructor Lin then jumped over the wall. The two met under the locust tree and sat down together. Instructor Lin asked, "Brother, where are you from? What is your Buddhist name?" Zhi Shen replied, "I am Lu Da from Guanzhong. I became a monk because I killed so many people. When I was young, I went to Dongjing and met your father, Commander Lin." Lin Chong was overjoyed and decided to become sworn brothers with Zhi Shen. Zhi Shen asked, "Instructor, why are you here today?" Lin Chong replied, "Just now, my wife and I came to the Yue Temple next door to fulfill a vow.
