"Little Deer" - Chapter Seventy-Six: A Warning

A cold wind blew into the room in gusts, blowing away the smoky smoke and bringing a chill to the room.
Xiao Qin turned around and went back to his desk, lighting a cigarette.
Am I tired? He asked himself.
Of course he was exhausted. Every day after Cheng Nuo's death, he lived in guilt. He abandoned his stubbornness of many years and returned to Xiao Hongyan's control, becoming the young master of the Xiao family that he once despised the most. Even knowing how many people cursed him behind his back as an illegitimate child, he didn't care, because he needed this identity and the Xiao family as his backing so that he could become strong as quickly as possible to avenge Cheng Nuo.
Revenge brought him no pleasure. The dead cannot be brought back to life, and she could not see any of this, so what was the point? He became more and more depressed, and even seeing idioms made him feel that he was the one who caused her to become like this. So he left the United States and returned to China, numbing himself with relentless work and living a life like a robot.
Until… until he helped her into his hotel room during a business trip…
He wanted to explain, wanted to ask her what she wanted, but the words wouldn't come out. She was right. How long would this go on? Did he want her to live in someone else's shadow with him?
That day, after Liang Lu finished speaking, she got up, grabbed her bag and coat, and left the hot pot restaurant. He stopped her before she got into a taxi.
It was very cold. The tip of her nose was red from the wind, as were her eyes, and her pale face was full of stubbornness.
The taxi driver urged her impatiently, his grip on her fingers tightening, until finally he could only tell her, "Give me some time."
The two hadn't seen each other for a while. He had been dealing with matters related to idioms these past few days. Now that he had sent the person away, he was still not at ease. He was partly to blame for how idioms had come to this point.
He still couldn't find his way out of this cage.
He stood by the window, lost in thought, barely taking a few puffs of his cigarette before the ash settled into the gaps in the wool carpet. The year-end was approaching, and the bustling crowds on the street carried a hint of anticipation and restlessness, but he felt utterly bored and listless. His phone on the table chimed softly, indicating a new message. He quickly checked it; it was Xiao Hongyan, asking how he and Li Jia were doing lately.
He suddenly felt irritated, stubbed out his cigarette, picked up the landline on the table, and called his assistant outside the door: "Have Cheng Dan from the business department come up here."
Liang Lu had booked her plane ticket home for the Spring Festival travel rush. Taking advantage of the weekend, she wanted to buy some gifts at the market before the holiday to bring back as souvenirs. Zhuquemen was a well-known secondhand antique market in the city. Liang's father enjoyed collecting old things, so she came to browse. Actually, she knew nothing about these things; she was just browsing and hoping to find something that looked like her father's style.
With the Lunar New Year approaching, the market was busier than usual. She squeezed through the rows of stalls, looking at each one one by one, stopping every now and then to examine the items and ask the price. Just as she put down a wood carving, she suddenly overheard a conversation at the stall next to her. A foreigner was asking the owner the price, and both were speaking Chinese. However, the foreigner seemed to have a poor command of Chinese, taking a while to process the owner's price and occasionally uttering English exclamations, which made her quite anxious.
Before the boss could even reach for his phone to type in the search, Liang Lu blurted out the string of English letters and numbers. The foreigner heard it, turned around, and quickly thanked her. Beneath his thick, slightly wavy brown hair, a pair of bright, clear grey-blue eyes shone. Their eyes met, and for a moment they froze, then almost simultaneously recognized each other.
What a coincidence, it's Nick, whom I met briefly at a previous business meeting.
The shop owner initially thought he could easily make a sale by finding a Chinese translator who could speak English, but he didn't expect the two to know each other. As a result, the price that had been ripping off foreigners was slashed several times over.
Nick, holding the trinkets he'd bought at a "super low price," exclaimed in disbelief. Liang Lu asked him why he'd come all alone, not worried about getting ripped off. It turned out he'd just come out for a casual weekend stroll, to get familiar with the area, and had become captivated by these exquisite, antique items, unable to resist wanting to take them home.
Nick wanted to treat Liang Lu to coffee as a thank you, but Liang Lu declined before even choosing a gift. The two chatted briefly, eventually talking about the previous company meeting and work, and discovered that Nick worked at Yu Feng Group, having just joined the company a few days before the meeting.
Although the encounter was coincidental, it wasn't a big deal, and Liang Lu didn't think much of it. However, a few days later, while working in her office, she received an offer from the company itself—an invitation to become Nick's secretary, the investment director.
When Cheng Dan arrived at Xiao Qin's office, he was signing a document. Cheng Dan was puzzled; why had he called her up when he was so busy? As she was speculating, Xiao Qin turned the signed document towards her, asked her to sit down, and said, "I'm planning to transfer Assistant Liang from your department to my office as my secretary. Would that be convenient for you? Could you coordinate it?"
Cheng Dan glanced at the transfer decision in front of her, which was practically ready to be stamped, and inwardly raised an eyebrow. This wasn't a discussion; it was practically a notification. The shrewd and quick-witted Cheng Dan's expression remained unchanged. She merely let out a slight sigh of relief and smiled easily, "President Xiao, I thought I'd done something wrong. So it's this... it's convenient for me, but..."
"What is it?"
"I know Assistant Liang is very talented, and to be honest, I'm reluctant to let him go. But... why are there so many people trying to poach Assistant Liang these past few days? What a coincidence."
"Gathering in groups? What's going on?"
"Yesterday I just received a letter from the general manager from the group's investment director, requesting that Assistant Liang be their secretary. And today I received yours. Isn't that a coincidence?"
Xiao Qin leaned back in his chair without speaking, seemingly deep in thought, before finally asking, "What did she say?"
Cheng Dan said, "They said they'd think about it, but haven't given a definite answer yet."
Xiao Qin nodded knowingly, then tapped the piece of paper on the table with his finger and said, "Take this down and give it to her too."
These past few days, the sales department has been both tense and excited. For some reason, Vice President Xiao has been showing up unexpectedly. While everyone is nervous because of his superior status, they can't help but discuss his every move. They wonder what close working relationship the sales department has with Vice President Xiao lately, as he frequently visits Cheng Dan's office. If it weren't for the office's glass walls and the door being wide open, one could see from the outside that Manager Cheng looked somewhat nervous and cautious, and might even think there was something going on between them.
Unlike the others in the department who were completely baffled, Cheng Dan gradually understood. This phenomenon started after she handed Liang Lu the transfer letter. She had a feeling that as long as Liang Lu hadn't made a decision, President Xiao would keep coming over to make his presence felt and give them a warning.
Xiao Er, who was usually so reserved, was practically bursting with rage; he was just short of stopping the man and questioning him.
