Legend has it that the Lin family ancestors were renowned chefs on Earth, their specialty being roast duck, and they even owned a roast duck restaurant called "Quanjude." Ducks were a popular domestic fowl in ancient times, but like many other animals, they became extinct after a cataclysmic war.
More than three hundred years after the cataclysmic war, Emperor Qin Shi Huang unified the solar system, established his empire, and built the "Sunrise Palace." In the Sunrise Palace lived a royal chef, Lin Weixin, a descendant of the Lin family. He accidentally discovered a "Lin Family Recipe" among his ancestors' belongings, which detailed the preparation of roast duck. He presented this recipe to the First Emperor.
The emperor, upon seeing it, ordered him to prepare the dish according to the recipe. Since ducks were extinct, Lin Weixin had to use substitutes and improve upon the ancient recipe. Through tireless efforts, he finally brought the roast duck, lost for over three hundred years, back to life.
After tasting it, the First Emperor was astonished, deeming it a gift from immortals. He bestowed upon Lin Weixin the title of "Human Chef," a hereditary title, and issued an imperial edict that only descendants of the Lin family holding the title of "Human Chef" could prepare "Roast Duck."
Later, some generals and ministers who had rendered great service to the country were fortunate enough to be rewarded by the emperor and tasted "Roast Duck," all exclaiming that it was a "gift from the gods." However, no one ever knew the exact ingredients used to make "Roast Duck."
To this day, the Lin family has kept this secret for over a hundred years and intends to keep it forever.
I. Coming-of-Age Ceremony

Lin Hu got up very early today. Today was an important day for him; he was now fourteen years old. For a Lin family man, fourteen meant starting to cook. He would begin striving to earn the title of "Human Chef."
However, the women of the Lin family, at the age of fourteen, had to make a choice: give up the Lin family name and marry, or keep the Lin family name and remain unmarried for life.
In reality, with a few exceptions, most Lin family women chose the latter. Because these women who remained in the Lin family never showed any signs of aging until their deaths, always maintaining the appearance of an eighteen-year-old. However, eternal youth came at a price. The Lin family rules forbade these eternally beautiful women from having husbands or lovers, not even for a one-night stand.
Historically, some had tried to lure or force Lin family women into bed; those who did so all died in their beds, and the women would disappear from public view afterward.
Legend has it that the secret to the Lin family women's eternal youth was their long-term consumption of roast duck. However, the wives who married into the Lin family still aged.
The ancestral hall was where the Lin family worshipped their ancestors and where the men underwent their coming-of-age ceremonies. The Lin family
was quite large, but the number of men was small. Therefore, most family affairs were handled by the women of the Lin family, while the men were only responsible for culinary matters.
Lin Hu entered the ancestral hall for the first time.
The ancestral hall was large and sparsely decorated. Hanging in the center was a five-meter-long scroll of Chinese calligraphy in running script, which read,
"Heaven and earth are ruthless, treating all things like straw dogs; the sage is ruthless, treating the people like straw dogs."
The Lin family descendants had to learn Chinese from a young age, so Lin Hu had some understanding of cursive script. However, he didn't understand the meaning of these two sentences, nor could he fathom their connection to culinary arts.
Below the calligraphy stood four family elders—three women and one man—all dressed in white robes. The man, with a long, pure white beard, two white eyebrows, and not a single hair on his head, appeared to be eighty or ninety years old. He was Lin Yongshou, the previous generation's "human chef," and Lin Hu's grandfather.
