[Classical] Palace Secrets: Who Stole the First Night from Chinese Emperors?

Palace Secrets: Who Stole the First Night from Chinese Emperors?
Introduction: The marriage age for men in the Chinese palace was generally no more than 18, with most between 13 and 17. Almost all emperors, young emperors, and crown princes had already slept with women before their formal marriage, possessing considerable sexual experience; some had even fathered children. Emperor

Hui of Jin, Sima Zhong, a foolish emperor of the Western Jin Dynasty, married at the age of 13 when he was crown prince.

Before Sima Zhong's marriage, his father, Emperor Wu of Jin, Sima Yan, sent the palace maid Xie Jiu to the Eastern Palace to instruct the crown prince on matters of the bedroom. Xie Jiu was already pregnant when she left the crown prince's Eastern Palace. She later gave birth to a son in another palace. Several years later, Crown Prince Sima Zhong saw a child in his parents' palace, and Emperor Wu told him that this was his son, which greatly surprised him. Similarly, Emperor Wencheng of Northern Wei, Tuoba Jun, married at 17, but he had already slept with palace maids at the age of 13, just entering puberty, and became a father at 14.

In the Qing Dynasty, it was explicitly stipulated that before the emperor's wedding, eight carefully selected older, virtuous, and beautiful palace maids would be chosen to serve him. These eight maids were given official titles, becoming women of status within the palace, receiving monthly stipends, and no longer performing the menial labor of ordinary palace maids. Therefore, this position was highly coveted by the palace maids, who hoped to escape their hardships and rise in rank. These eight maids were typically given the titles of four palace female officials: Master of Ceremonies, Gatekeeper, Bedchamber Attendant, and Curtain Attendant. This regulation in the Qing Dynasty aimed to give the emperor some experience in sexual relations before marriage, so that he would not feel embarrassed or flustered in his life with the empress and could remain composed. As

for which women the emperor had sexual relations with before marriage, there were no regulations in the history of Chinese courts, nor could they be; it depended entirely on the emperor's personal desires. For the young emperor, the issue of sex was nerve-wracking, and he was still in a state of being enlightened and without taboos. In this state, one is easily aroused or impulsively led to sexual relations with the women around them. The Crown Prince resides in the Eastern Palace. After his coming-of-age ceremony, the Crown Prince is considered an adult, and without the emperor's decree, he is no longer allowed to freely enter or leave the inner palace to prevent entanglements with the concubines. Within the Eastern Palace, however, the Crown Prince has no such restrictions and can do as he pleases, freely molesting any maidservant and having sexual relations with any of them.
Statistically, who will be the young emperor's or Crown Prince's first sexual partner? Will this woman become the empress or a concubine? It's difficult to answer definitively; anyone could become the emperor's first woman, and after being favored, they would generally receive a corresponding title. But generally speaking, the most likely candidates are the palace maids around the young emperor or Crown Prince, and sometimes their wet nurses.
Palace maids and wet nurses are all female servants in the palace, without official titles. If a palace maid is favored and receives imperial favor, she will gain a title, thus changing her lowly status. Wet nurses had free access to the palace, and even if they were favored by the emperor, their status as wet nurses would never change, nor could it be changed. People could not accept that the wet nurse who had raised the emperor could become his concubine, let alone the empress.

Psychologically, the emperor, who believed himself to be the sole ruler, had shallow feelings for his first woman; these feelings would not last, nor would they be cherished. This woman would make the emperor shy, reminding him of the tension and timidity of his first sexual experience. The emperor would never feel at ease in her presence. Naturally, he would avoid her and turn to other beauties. Emperor

Shenzong of Ming, Zhu Yijun, was the third son of Emperor Muzong of Ming. At the age of 5, Zhu Yijun was made crown prince, and at the age of 10, he ascended the throne. At the age of 17, Zhu Yijun passed by Cining Palace and saw the palace maid Wang. He was instantly aroused and could not control himself, so he slept with her. Lady Wang then became pregnant. Such a significant event was naturally recorded by the accompanying eunuchs and documented in the daily register. However, Zhu Yijun, still smitten, did not favor Lady Wang, no longer visiting her or showing her any affection. Empress Dowager Cixi learned of this and, eager for a grandson, took care of Lady Wang. Lady Wang successfully gave birth to a son in the palace.
One day, the Empress Dowager excitedly told Emperor Shenzong about this, but he reacted indifferently, pretending not to hear. Due to Shenzong's coldness, Lady Wang's hopes of being promoted to concubine were dashed, and her son also suffered unjust neglect. However, there are exceptions in history regarding emperors and their first women, such as Emperor Xianzong of Ming (Zhu Jianshen) and the palace maid Lady Wan. Lady Wan entered the palace at the age of four, initially serving in the palace of Empress Dowager Sun, the mother of Emperor Yingzong. Emperor Yingzong was the father of Emperor Xianzong (Zhu Jianshen).

After entering puberty, Lady Wan grew increasingly beautiful and charming. Coupled with her intelligence, quick wit, and keen observation skills, she served the Empress Dowager with meticulous care, thus gaining the Empress Dowager's deepest favor and becoming her confidante and inseparable attendant. Emperor Xianzong, Zhu Jianshen, was the eldest son of Emperor Yingzong, born in the twelfth year of the Zhengtong reign. Two years later, Emperor Yingzong was captured at Tumu Fortress, and the Empress Dowager ordered Zhu Jianshen to be made Crown Prince. Emperor Daizong, Zhu Qiyu, ascended the throne, and in the third year of the Jingtai reign, deposed Zhu Jianshen, making him Prince of Yi. After Emperor Yingzong was restored to the throne, he was again made Crown Prince; that year, Zhu Jianshen was 18 years old.
Eighteen years later, Emperor Yingzong died, and Zhu Jianshen ascended the throne as Emperor Xianzong of Ming. Even when Xianzong was Crown Prince, the Empress Dowager had sent her trusted palace maid, Lady Wan, to serve him. Lady Wan was 18 years older than the Crown Prince. Under the care of this palace maid, Lady Wan, who was about the same age as his wet nurse, the Crown Prince grew day by day into a handsome young man. The exceptionally intelligent Lady Wan, through unknown means and at unknown times, seduced the young Crown Prince, leading to a sexual relationship that the prince found irrevocably infatuated. He was dependent on her, unable to live without her, and she became the anchor of his life. The young Emperor Zhu Jianshen, besides needing affection and sexual desire for Lady Wan, also felt a sense of subjugation and awe. Zhu Jianshen ascended the throne at 18, while Lady Wan was already 36. Despite his
youthful vigor, the middle-aged Zhu Jianshen continued to favor the woman, bestowing upon her a title, eventually elevating her to the rank of Imperial Concubine. Imperial Concubine Wan, relying on this favor, became arrogant and domineering in the palace. She ruled with impunity, cruelly forcing other pregnant women to abort their pregnancies. Everyone in the palace feared her. Even in her old age, Emperor Xianzong's affection for Imperial Concubine Wan remained undiminished. At the age of 58, Imperial Concubine Wan, in a fit of rage, beat a palace maid. Due to her obesity, she fainted and never awoke. Upon hearing the news, Emperor Xianzong was heartbroken and sighed, "With Consort Wan gone, how much longer can I live?" A few months later, Emperor Xianzong passed away in sorrow and grief, following Consort Wan, at the age of 40.
Both were emperors of the Ming Dynasty, so why were the fates of Consort Wang and Consort Wan so different? They were equally beautiful and both were palace maids. Logically, the difference might lie in the emperor's experience of sex—whether it was pleasure, fear, or pain. Consort Wang was completely passive; she herself was young and inexperienced, and her fear and tension were self-evident, let alone the ability to make Emperor Shenzong feel at ease. Consort Wan, on the other hand, had watched Emperor Xianzong grow up and knew everything about him. She was also 18 years older than him, essentially his mother. Consort Wan's maturity, charm, composure, and the long-cultivated affection and attachment naturally made Emperor Xianzong feel relaxed, at ease, and incredibly pleasurable during their sexual encounters. Therefore, Consort Wang and her son were neglected, while Consort Wan, despite having no children, remained the most favored concubine, being granted the title of Consort.

While Lady Wan was essentially Emperor Xianzong's wet nurse, there are historical records of actual wet nurses having sexual relations with the emperors they raised. One such example is Emperor Tianqi of the Ming Dynasty and his wet nurse, Lady Ke. Historical records indicate that Lady Ke and Emperor Tianqi had a sexual relationship. Lady Ke was notorious for her promiscuity in the Ming court. How could she let the young emperor go? Her relationship with Emperor Tianqi differed from that of a typical wet nurse and adopted son. The unusual nature of their relationship can be seen from the following historical records and analysis. It can be concluded from their encounters that Lady Ke first seduced the young Emperor Tianqi, and their ambiguous relationship continued until his death at the age of 23.

First, Lady Ke nursed Emperor Tianqi, raising him day by day. Generally, once the emperor grew up in the palace, the wet nurse's duties were fulfilled, and the emperor no longer needed her constant presence. However, Lady Ke was different. Historical records state that she entered the warm pavilion of Emperor Tianqi's Qianqing Palace every morning to serve him, only returning to her own palace, Xian'an Palace, after midnight. If it were a wet nurse taking care of the emperor, there would be no need for it, and it would be superfluous.
The emperor was already grown up, and the palace was filled with servants; what need did he have for a wet nurse? If it's said that Madam Ke acted out of love, like a mother, needing to watch over the young emperor every day to feel at ease, then this contradicts the following fact—Madam Ke later had an affair with Wei Zhongxian. One day, she and Wei Zhongxian were drinking and enjoying themselves at Taiye Pond, their affections running high. Not far away, the Tianqi Emperor, who was climbing a tree to catch fish, suddenly fell, his clothes torn, his face bleeding. Madam Ke, however, remained unmoved, continuing to laugh and joke with her lover, Wei Zhongxian. At this moment, whether Madam Ke was a wet nurse or claimed to be a loving mother, she was neglecting her duties, and clearly, she was neither.

Secondly, Madam Ke was stunningly beautiful and alluring. In front of the Tianqi Emperor, she never acted as a wet nurse or a loving mother, but rather a woman craving favor. Historical records state that even in her forties, Madam Ke's complexion was still like that of a young woman in her late teens, and she dressed fashionably. Her beauty and attire were extremely disproportionate to her age and status. However, Madam Ke's beauty and allure were astonishing, surpassing even the young palace maids and concubines, who could only stare in disbelief.

It is said that to maintain her beauty and eternal youth, Madam Ke regularly combed her hair with the saliva of young palace maids to keep it black and lustrous. Her cloud-like hair undoubtedly added to her charm and made her even more alluring and passionate. Such a woman, displaying her charm before the emperor and serving him day and night, was no longer merely a wet nurse.

Furthermore, as Emperor Tianqi's wet nurse, Madam Ke, driven by jealousy, caused the deaths of several concubines who had been favored by him. The most pitiful among them was Consort Zhang Yu, who became pregnant after being favored by the emperor. When Consort Zhang Yu was about to give birth, Madam Ke ordered that all of Consort Zhang Yu's food and drink be cut off, and refused to send anyone to assist in the delivery.
