Dark Flame 13

Chapter Thirteen: The Stone Wall Traveler
hurled the nearly two-meter-long, slender greatsword with all his might. In mid-air, it emitted a unique sound,
the kind only a sharp object makes when it spins. Like a harvester, it sliced through the eerie vines growing from the desert floor,
cleaving the frantically speeding four-legged machines diagonally like a giant boomerang. The greatsword
slowed its attack and plunged into another four-legged machine.
The machine wobbled, trying to shake off the weapon that had nearly destroyed it,
but the next second the greatsword became incredibly heavy, piercing through its core and embedding itself in the sand.
Standing atop the four-legged machine's corpse, the strong man, over two meters tall, clenched his fist,
knocking away a leaping machine with a single punch. With
his other, bloodied hand, he forcefully pulled out the slender greatsword and slashed forward,
instantly severing the vines that were about to bind him.
Before the vines could regrow and entangle his body, he leaped to his feet, his gaze piercing through what appeared to be the helmet's visor
to the humanoid guardian struggling to crawl towards him on its hands and knees.
He roared even more ferociously, his powerful leg muscles suddenly bulging, tearing apart
the special leg armor covering it—a color indistinguishable from the desert. Surprisingly, the leg armor instantly regenerated,
seemingly growing thicker along with his legs.
He swung his greatsword, slicing through any obstructing vines, and charged towards the enemy with even more frenzied steps and attacks. However,
more quadrupedal machines hindered his progress. These machines began spewing throwing knives from their mouths,
aiming at the man from various tricky angles. Due to his massive size, dodging these knives was somewhat difficult,
and soon his armor was covered in countless wounds and bloodstains.
Seizing the opportunity, he deflected the incoming throwing knife with his sword,
his legs unleashing tremendous power that propelled him towards a four-legged machine.
His greatsword effortlessly pierced the enemy, and without stopping, he leaped to the next target,
taking down two enemies in the shortest time.
"Amazing..." Nevalo, watching from afar with the other two, marveled at the man's powerful yet agile
movements, his savage weapon-wielding, and the sixth four-legged machine he had destroyed.
"A spent force..." Lelona, however, wasn't so optimistic.
Clearly, this man had only fled because he couldn't defeat the Guardians, but when he realized he couldn't escape,
he chose to turn and fight. This was probably his last battle, hence his frenzied actions.
"Let's find a way to get out of here." Lerona wasn't sure if the giant had spotted them.
Clutching a small packet of the last remaining stealth powder, she tried to pull the two away...
The humanoid guardian waved its hand, sending a sand-based rock hurtling towards the man fighting the four-legged machine.
By the time the man noticed the massive thing coming at him, it was too late.
He immediately turned and lunged to the side, but the rock was clearly not as simple as it appeared...
The rock didn't explode; there was only the expected dull thud upon landing.
But it did explode, shattering into hundreds of tiny fragments that scattered in all directions.
The man, who hadn't even hit the ground yet, had no chance to dodge them and was instantly riddled with bullets,
his armor shattering in an instant, revealing rather gruesome-looking tendons!
Noticing this, Lelona frowned, but she quickly realized that the guardian hadn't killed the man with a single punch.
Instead, it turned and began crawling towards them. Clearly, only two quadruped machines would suffice to deal with a paralyzed man,
and there were obviously over twenty more beside him.
"I'll lure that guy away. You guys use this opportunity to rescue him and then leave,"
Nevaro said, seemingly unconcerned. He stared at the approaching guardian, his eyes devoid of fear.
"Mr. Nevaro…" Zibilins reached out and tugged at Nevaro's sleeve,
clearly not wanting him to do something so dangerous, but Nevaro roughly shook her off.
He… seemed like a different person.
"You want to die, don't you?" Lelona had been fighting for fifteen years.
Many had given up their will to live, using the remaining courage in their lives to make the greatest contribution,
thereby proving or feeling their existence. This could be considered almost the happiest way to die on the battlefield.
Nevaro now felt no different from those martyrs seeking death…
Clearly, he was aware of his destructive potential, but Lelona was unaware of his incredibly painful memories,
which urged him to find release.
“Lelona, can you tell me how old you are?” Nevaro didn’t answer her question,
instead turning to ask an even stranger one, leaving both women bewildered.
“Twenty-eight years old.”
Before Lelona could finish speaking, Nevaro threw down his bag and dashed off.
She immediately realized that his question was merely a distraction. She wanted to stop him,
but Nevaro’s speed was far beyond her expectations, almost as fast as she was after using “Swiftness.”
Nevaro’s actions left Lelona with no choice. Although the “Fragment of the Temple of Time” was a crucial artifact,
she didn’t want to lose her life for it. She turned and pulled Zibilins towards the strange man.
If it weren't for someone like Qi Bilinsi, Leonna might have chosen to leave immediately.
However, given Nevaro's terrifying speed, she felt that the two of them had ample time to rescue him.
The stranger's strength and lineage were more than enough to warrant Leonna's invitation to join their team. What
they needed most now was sufficient combat power; otherwise, they would never reach the Knights' headquarters.
Nevaro was nearly entangled by the wildly growing vines. He forcefully kicked over a four-legged machine blocking his path and
rushed towards the Guardian at top speed, throwing the throwing knife Leonna had given him for self-defense with force,
which slammed into the Guardian's face.
"Come on! Come at me if you dare!"
The humanoid Guardian didn't disappoint him, raising its large hand to swing at him.
He immediately dashed out of the Guardian's attack range,
but two throwing knives shot from behind accurately pierced his right hand.
"Ah—!"
Nevaro screamed in pain, then felt a force on his right hand, forcibly pulling his body back.
Only then did he notice the thin but strong threads binding the hilts of the throwing knives.
Staring at the rapidly spreading vines, he gritted his teeth and forcefully pulled out two knives,
blood immediately staining his clothes.
His face was deathly pale with pain, and a chill ran through his body.
He quickly quickened his pace, dodging the attacks of the vines and throwing knives, dragging over twenty quadruped machines across the desert.
Meanwhile, behind the Guardian,
Qi Bilin was gritting her teeth, treating the stranger's wounds.
She soon discovered that more than half of the surface injuries weren't healed by her.
For example, large areas of exposed tendons were quickly covered with smooth skin,
and his tattered armor began to peel away uncontrollably.
Qi Bilin immediately peeled away the broken armor to treat him,
but what she revealed was a terrifying expanse of tendons. She had never seen anything like it before,
and her hands trembled uncontrollably with tension.
But she soon discovered that the exposed tendons were beginning to regrow skin.
Her task was to quickly help the stranger regain his strength, which would also speed up the skin regeneration process.
"Miss Lelona... how... could this happen..."
At this moment, Lelona fired her last throwing knife, accurately shattering the quadruped's thigh joint.
The body, now without two legs to support it, immediately collapsed to the ground. However, the quadruped immediately opened its mouth and fired another throwing knife.
Lelona, holding the five knives that had already returned, caught the weapon delivered to her and,
gathering her fighting spirit, easily severed the tough threads connecting the throwing knives.
This gave her two more usable weapons.
Although these two throwing knives were much heavier than the ones she already carried
, she didn't think she could handle the situation without a few more weapons.
"The Stone Wall Clan, isn't that right?" Lelona cut the vines that had grown to her feet and
began firing throwing knives at the approaching quadruped without turning her head.
"Cough, cough! That's right... I'm a traveler from the Stone Wall Clan, and you are..."
His voice sounded weak, but one could guess he was probably young,
no more than twenty-five.
"Just passing by... Get up quickly, we must leave immediately," Lelona replied casually.
The man tried to get up, but the movement
aggravated his numerous wounds, causing him to gasp in pain. Fortunately, the attacks hadn't hit any vital organs,
leaving him physically disabled but not crippled—the reason Lelona continued to save him.
Escaping with a strange, crippled stranger would be unwise.
"Careful..." Zibilins gently helped the man up.
Lelona quickly checked the direction and prepared to leave;
they had to get away before the Guardians had the strength to pursue them.
"Miss Lelona... Mr. Nevaro... what should we do?"
The kind-hearted Zibilins was clearly worried about Nevaro's condition.
Looking at the four-legged machines that had piled up into a small mountain, Lerona shook her head in regret.
After realizing that Nevalo was probably doomed, Qibilins' eyes immediately reddened and she almost cried.
Picking up his greatsword from the ground, the tall stone-walled man weakly glanced back.
A look of utter confusion quickly appeared on his face, and his previously unsteady steps faltered.
He pointed to the spot and asked, "Is that your companion?"
Following his gesture, Lerona turned her head, only to break out in a cold sweat at the sight before her. She would never forget the uncontrollable fear etched deep within her
when her bracelet-like artifact, the "Shield of Protection," was destroyed … The small mountain of four-legged machines had collapsed, replaced by a towering figure, estimated to be about three meters tall. A woman with a beautiful figure but a chilling appearance stood out. Her eyes had no pupils, only a black abyss, and her pale fingers were unusually long and thin… Her body was covered in countless wounds; each time a throwing knife pierced her body, more gears and black mist would spray out. Soon, even those witnessing this scene for the first time sensed something was amiss. Aside from the woman's unusually high height, the expected signs of injury were completely absent. The woman, like a machine, continuously sprayed out gears, which disappeared before even touching the ground, and her wounds healed accordingly. Hundreds upon hundreds of vines swirled around the woman's body, perfectly highlighting her full breasts and hips. Perhaps this would be a sufficiently erotic sight for some men, but once they saw the vines wither and decompose at a visible speed, no one would likely feel the same way. The Guardian seemed to have recalled the quadrupedal machines, but many showed obvious signs of oxidation and disintegration. A normal person, after witnessing that bizarre scene, would never want to touch these creatures. But the Guardian, being a machine, opened a space on its back and absorbed the quadrupedal machines into its body. He raised his hand and slammed it down on the woman's body, sending a towering column of dust into the sky. Even Lelona and the others could clearly feel the terrifying power of this punch; there were probably few things in the world that could withstand such an attack. When the guardian removed his hand and the dust gradually settled, Lelona was shocked to find that the woman's body had disintegrated from the impact! This slightly lessened her fear; it seemed this woman wasn't invincible, and with enough strength, she could still be defeated. The woman's shattered body was immobilized, and her remaining hand grabbed the body of a relatively short man and hurled him aside. That looked like… The guardian of Nevalo, seeing this, tried to swing his right hand to strike Nevalo, who was rolling down the sand dune, but his hand was already immobilized halfway up the sand. Then, the blocks on his body began to shift, and the guardian's body began to disintegrate without warning, his right hand's fingers falling off one by one.

The exposed mechanical parts began to show obvious signs of rust. As time passed,
the Guardian's immobile body gradually turned into part of the sand and dust.
Finally, its structure could no longer hold on, and it collapsed like a house,
directly burying Nevaro...
The woman's remains scattered on the ground then turned into a large cloud of black mist,
swirling in the air for a while before disappearing into a certain direction.
Lelona guessed that they had probably returned to Nevaro's body.
"Mr. Nevaro!" Zibilins immediately ran towards the pile of remains,
but Lelona stopped her. She cautiously walked forward,
grabbed a few vines from the side, and threw them onto the half-renewed four-legged mechanical remains.
After confirming that there would be no further reaction, she nodded to Zibilins.
Zibilins began to move stones with great anxiety, trying to rescue Nevaro from below as soon as possible.
Lelona then put down her bundle and began to help. Based on what they had seen earlier,
Nevaro should be near where they were digging.
They had worked hard for two whole hours before finally reaching the bottom.
By then, both of their hands were injured, and gripping the rocks was extremely painful.
"Let me do it!"
The man from the Stone Wall Clan had almost recovered by now. Although he was still covered in wounds,
he couldn't bear to let the two women continue digging.
He was quite tall, probably over two meters,
and the two women looked like little girls next to him. His muscles were not just for show;
his sheer physical strength already surpassed Lelona's full-power aura,
though this was purely a comparison of strength.
He didn't think he could defeat this woman who looked like an assassin.
First, she quickly tossed aside the smaller stones, one in each hand.
Then, gripping the edge of the larger wreckage with both hands, she endured the pain and
used all her strength to lift it up. Qi Bilins cried out in surprise,
letting him know that the person they were looking for was down there.
"Hurry... I can't hold on much longer..."
Leilona's body slithered in like a snake, pulling Nevaro out as quickly as possible.
The wreckage made a dull thud as it was set down. The exhausted Stone Wall Clan man leaned against the ruins, panting.
After a long while, he finally had the strength to look at the unconscious man called Nevaro.
A flood of questions welled up in his mind...
