vital energy, hence their shorter lifespans. Look at the eunuchs in the capital. Not only do they not steal from women or seduce
their apprentices . Logically, they should be young and live to be hundreds of years old. Why
then do they have more wrinkles on their faces and white hair earlier than others?
Why do they look like old women even though they are called eunuchs? In the capital, there are only ordinary people who hang longevity plaques, not eunuchs who erect centenarian arches. It can be seen that the concept of female beauty is not harmful to people. It's just that this herb is not recorded in the "Compendium of Materia Medica," so there is no
definite explanation. Some say it nourishes people, while others say it harms them. If we compare it according to these theories, it is not only nourishing
, but its medicinal properties are the same as ginseng and aconite, and they can be used together. However, there is one thing: while ginseng and aconite are highly
nourishing , they are only suitable for long-term use, not for excessive consumption. They should only be used as medicine, not as food. If one
consumes them indiscriminately, regardless of dosage or timing, it will generally be harmful. The benefits and harms of female sexual intercourse are similar. Long-term use can have the effect of balancing yin and yang, while excessive use can have the harm of water and fire clashing. As medicine,
it can bring the joy of soothing the mind and relieving depression; as food, it can cause the worry of damaging tendons and depleting blood. If people in the world understand that female sexual intercourse can be used as medicine, they should not
be too sparse nor too frequent, neither should they dislike it nor be overly fond of it. Before approaching female sexual intercourse, one should think, "This medicine is not poison, so why should I be
afraid of it?" After approaching female sexual intercourse, one should think, "This medicine is not food, so why should I urinate on it?" In this way, yang will not be excessive and yin
will not be stagnant. How could this not be beneficial to people? There's only one thing: this medicine shares all the same properties as ginseng and aconite, except that their origin and method of use are somewhat
opposite . Those taking the medicine must be aware of this. Ginseng and aconite are best when from their original source; locally grown ones are useless. Similarly, women
are best when they are locally grown; those from their original source are not only useless but can also harm one. What is meant by "locally grown"? What is meant by "original"? One's own wives and concubines, without needing to seek
them out or money, can be easily obtained—this is what is meant by "locally grown." I can sleep freely without hindrance, and let others knock on the door without
fear. It neither
harms one's vital energy nor hinders the family line. After a sexual encounter, the whole body feels refreshed. Is this not nourishing? Beauty comes from wealthy families, and exquisite makeup requires embroidered doors. Domestic chickens taste bland compared to the freshness of wild pheasants; an old woman
, past her prime, cannot compare to a young maiden. This is what is meant by "authenticity." Such women, if desired in dreams and sleep, will be seduced, first with flirtation, then with gifts, or even by climbing
over walls to meet, or by sneaking into holes for secret trysts. Though their lust may be as bold as the heavens, their
souls are like mice; though no one sees them, they feel as if someone is present. They are lustful
yet fearful of excessive sweating; their love for their children outweighs their courage. They risk their lives in unpredictable dangers, creating extraordinary calamities, secretly damaging
their virtue, openly violating the law, and ultimately meeting their demise. If the man is unjustly killed, the wife may still live. But for women who have lost their chastity, the various consequences are
unbearable. Thus, it is clear that people should never abandon what is near for what is far, nor tire of the old for the new. The author of this novel originally had a kind heart, wanting to preach to the world, advising people to restrain their desires, not to indulge in
them, and to keep their sexual activity secret, not to promote it. Readers should not misunderstand his intentions. If the goal is to curb lust, why not write
a moralistic book to uphold public morals, instead of creating a frivolous novel? Readers are unaware of this. Any method of changing customs and habits must
be adapted to the prevailing circumstances for its message to be easily accepted. Nowadays, people dislike reading sacred scriptures and biographies, preferring unofficial histories and anecdotes. Even within
these unofficial histories , they dislike stories of loyalty, filial piety, and chastity, preferring lewd and absurd tales. Customs today are truly depraved. If you were to write a book on morality to persuade people to do good, let alone get people to buy it and read it, it would be like a philanthropic family
donating scriptures to be printed and bound into a set, and even if you paid them a fee, they would either unpack it or smoke
it; they would never actually look at it. Instead of indulging him in matters of lust, when he's engrossed in them
, suddenly offer a few sharp criticisms, making him sigh in realization: "Women are so alluring, how can one not keep one's body for pleasure
? Why not constantly enjoy them, instead of becoming a ghost beneath the peony flower, pursuing empty fame and abandoning reality?" Then, when he sees the clear consequences of lust
, gently offer a few words of enlightenment, making him suddenly realize: "Adultery inevitably brings retribution, how can one not keep one's wives and concubines
for personal enjoyment? Why engage in frivolous pursuits, borrowing money to pay off real debts?" Reflecting on this, he will naturally avoid the wicked path. Avoiding the wicked path, husbands will naturally love their wives, and wives will naturally respect their husbands; this
is the essence of the teachings of Zhou Nan and Zhao Nan. This is the method of governing people by addressing the issue at hand and governing people by addressing the people themselves. Not only did unofficial historians and anecdotes employ this technique, but
even sages in classical texts practiced it. Consider, for example, Mencius's discourse on governance to King Xuan of Qi during the Warring States period. King Xuan, a man obsessed with sensual pleasures and material gain, found governance unappealing, merely offering a casual "Excellent, indeed!" Mencius
asked, "If Your Majesty finds it good, why does it not prevail?" King Xuan replied, "I have a weakness: I am fond of wealth." Mencius then used
the story of Duke Liu's fondness for wealth to persuade him. King Xuan continued, "I have a weakness: I am fond of women." At this point, he was already willing
to become a tyrannical ruler, treating it as a reply to someone's failure to govern properly. If one were to consider a moralist, one would sternly and firmly remonstrate against
such licentiousness. Ancient emperors have always held this admonition: A commoner who is fond of women will perish; a high official who is fond of women will lose his position; a feudal lord who is fond of women
will lose his kingdom. " If the emperor is lustful, the empire will perish." If King Xuan had heard this, even if he hadn't spoken aloud, he would have thought to himself, "This illness of mine
is incurable I have no use for you, sir." But Mencius, instead of speaking, captivated him with a romantic anecdote about the king's lust, making

a mere novel. Wherever the author addresses the reader, it is either a sharp critique or a wise saying, which must be carefully considered. The descriptions of
sexual intercourse and the depiction of bedroom pleasures are bordering on obscenity, but the author must ensure the reader sees the ending to understand the consequences and learn a warning.

Confucianism to study Buddhism, only to be severely punished by his parents and forced to stop. Left with no other choice, he took the imperial examinations, entering the academy as a child and helping others to pass. After his parents passed away, he observed a two-year mourning period, then distributed his vast fortune to his relatives. He sewed a large leather bag,
filled it with wooden fish drums and scriptures, shaved his head, and went into the mountains to cultivate himself. Those who knew him called him Elder Gufeng, while those who didn't simply called
him the Leather Bag Monk. Unlike other monks, he abstained from alcohol and meat, and strictly avoided lewd acts. Even within the fundamental practices of a monk,
there were three precepts: not soliciting donations, not lecturing on scriptures, and not residing in famous mountains. When asked why he didn't solicit donations, he replied, "The path to Buddhism generally begins with asceticism. One must strain one's muscles and bones, starve
one's body, and make the anxieties of hunger and cold increasingly pressing. When the anxieties of hunger and cold are increasingly pressing, lustful thoughts will not arise; when lustful thoughts do not arise, defilement will gradually recede, and purity
will gradually arise. In time, one will naturally attain Buddhahood. If one does not farm for food, nor weave for clothes, and relies all day on offerings from donors
, then when one's belly is full, one desires leisurely walks; when one's body is warm, one longs for peaceful sleep. While leisurely walking, one may see things that are desirable, and then..." Sleep is the beginning of dreams. Regardless of whether one succeeds in studying Buddhism,
all sorts of things leading to hell will come to them without being sought. That is why I support myself and refrain from soliciting donations.” When asked why he didn't preach, he said, “The words in the scriptures are spoken by Buddhas and Bodhisattvas; only Buddhas
and Bodhisattvas can understand them. For ordinary people to preach is like a fool talking about dreams. Tao Yuanming didn't seek deep understanding when reading books. Even Chinese people
reading Chinese books dare not seek deep understanding, let alone those from other parts of China.” "Do you think that someone who reads foreign books would then presumptuously translate them? I
dare not aspire to be a meritorious official of the Bodhisattvas, but only to avoid being a sinner to the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas. Therefore, I know my foolishness and guard my simplicity, and refrain from lecturing on scriptures." People then asked why he didn't live on famous mountains. He replied, "Those who cultivate themselves must not see what is desirable, so that their minds are not disturbed.
The things that are desirable in the world are not only sensual pleasures and material gains. Even the gentle breeze that soothes the body, the bright moon that pleases the heart, the birds that delight the ear, the ferns that taste delicious—all things
that are lovely and desirable are..." "Desire is tempting. Once I reside in a scenic spot, mountain spirits and water monsters lure me to seek poetry; the Moon Goddess and Wind Goddess disturb my
meditation
. Therefore, those who study in famous mountains fail to achieve their goals, and those who seek the Way in famous mountains find it difficult to purify their attachment to fame. Moreover, which famous mountain doesn't have women burning incense and officials eager to please? The affairs of the bright moon and green willows are a prime example. The reason I abandoned famous temples to live in this desolate mountain is simply to ensure that my
senses are free from any entanglements." The questioner deeply admired his words, believing them to be something no eminent monk of antiquity had uttered. Because of these three precepts, he did not seek fame, yet his reputation grew daily.
Many people from near and far wished to take refuge in him, but he refused to accept disciples lightly, wanting to observe whether they truly possessed good roots and were free from worldly desires before ordaining them
. If there was even the slightest doubt, he would refuse to accept them. So, after many years of monastic life, he had very few disciples, living alone in
a few houses built beside a mountain stream , farming for food and drinking from the spring. One day, the autumn wind blew bleakly, and the trees rustled with the chirping of insects. The monk rose early, swept the fallen leaves in front of the door, changed the water before the Buddha,
and after burning incense, he put down his meditation cushion and sat down to meditate in the central hall. Suddenly, a young scholar entered with two servants. The
scholar's appearance was as clear as autumn water and as graceful as spring clouds. His eyes shone with an unusual brilliance. He seemed to dislike direct
gazes and lewd looks, which he didn't need elsewhere, but he was particularly adept at secretly observing women. He didn't even need to get close; even from dozens of
feet , a single glance was enough to tell whether someone was good or bad. If he saw someone attractive, he would simply give them a look. If the woman were righteous,
she would bow her head and walk past, never glancing at his face; her gaze would simply be left unseen. But if the woman had the same fault as him
, she would glance here and there, her eyes conveying a love letter, making things impossible. Therefore, regardless of gender, having such eyes is not an auspicious sign; it brings disgrace and ruin.
Readers if your eyes resemble this, please be careful. At that moment, the scholar entered, bowed four times to the Buddha statue, and
four times to the monk, then stood to the side. The monk, initially unable to return the bows while in meditation, only stepped down from
his cushion and returned four deep bows. After they were seated, he asked the scholar's name. The scholar said, "I am a man from afar, traveling in
the Jiangsu and Zhejiang regions.
My pen name is 'Weiyang Sheng'. I have heard that you, Master, are a great monk and a living Buddha, so I have fasted and come to pay my respects and speak with you." You might wonder why he didn't address the monk by name but instead used his pen name? The reader should know that in those days,
the scholarly customs were strange; scholars disliked using their names and addressed each other by pen names. Therefore, scholars all had a title, some called "
Sheng," some "Zi," and some "Dao Ren." Generally, the young were called "Sheng," the middle-aged "Zi,"
and the elderly Dao Ren." The words used to express this title each had their own meaning, perhaps reflecting personal feelings or inclinations; they were
chosen freely, as long as they understood it themselves, it didn't need to be shared with everyone. The scholar, preoccupied with women, preferred the night to the day, and
the early night to the late night. Seeing the line "The night is not yet over" in the Book of Songs, he took the phrase out of context and named himself "Weiyang Sheng
" (meaning "Scholar of Unending Night"). The monk, feeling the praise was excessive, was ashamed and replied with a few humble words. At that moment, the vegetarian meal in the earthenware jar was
ready, so the monk invited him to stay for breakfast. The two sat facing each other and discussed Zen, their exchanges quite harmonious. It turned out that Weiyang Sheng was extremely intelligent, having read widely from all
walks of life . What others couldn't understand with a thousand words, he
grasped completely with just the monk's first question. The monk thought to himself, "What a knowledgeable man! It's just that creation made a mistake in his appearance; why pair a
heart devoted to Buddhism with such a wicked look? Judging from his demeanor, he's clearly a lecherous fiend. If I don't take him into
my , he'll surely seek out hidden places and cause chaos in women's homes. Countless women in the world will suffer under his influence.
To see such a perverse person today and not help to quell the chaos is not the way of compassion." He said to him, “Since I became a monk, many people have come to see me. Those foolish men and women who refuse to do good are not worth mentioning.
Even the scholars who come to study Zen and the officials who come to listen to the Dharma are all laymen; very few can understand the essence of Zen. Who would have thought that you, layman,
would possess such spiritual insight, and with this, you can attain Samadhi in just a few years of studying Zen? In this life, what is easily obtained is the physical body, what is difficult to obtain is one's inherent
nature. What is easily passed is time, what is difficult to pass is calamity. You, layman, have come with the potential to become a Buddha; you must not go down the path of demons and monsters
. Why not take advantage of this still-vibrant state of mind, sever your desires, and enter the monastic gate? Although I am of mortal form, I can still serve
as a lesson for others. If you can truly make this great vow, then…” " By this great cause and effect, a hundred years from now, you will be worthy to be enshrined in the Sangha, and you will not be subject to the commands of
the Rakshasas. What do you think, layman?" Wei Yangsheng said, "I have long cherished the thought of returning to Chan, and I will inevitably return to this Dharma in the future. However, I still have
two wishes unfulfilled, which are difficult to get rid of. Since I am still young, I will wait until I return to finish these two things and enjoy myself for a few years. Then
I will come to you to receive your blessing and take refuge. It will not be too late." The monk said, "May I ask what your two wishes are? Is it that you wish to be named in the Heavenly Palace to repay your learning, or to achieve merit in a foreign land
to report to the court?" Wei Yangsheng shook his head and said, "These are not my wishes." The monk said, "Since these are not my wishes, but..."
"What is it, after all?" Wei Yangsheng replied, "What I desire is something I can accomplish through my own efforts, not a mere fantasy. To be honest
, Master, my memory for reading, my comprehension of the Dao, and my writing skills are all top-notch. The famous scholars of today merely
memorize, rearrange things, write a few drafts, and publish a collection of poems and essays, then claim to dominate the literary world and reign supreme for a lifetime. I see that as a facade. To be a true scholar, one must read all the extraordinary things in the world..." "I would like to associate with all the extraordinary scholars in the world, travel to all the famous
mountains and leave my words for posterity. If I am fortunate enough to be listed on both the imperial examinations, I will have done some work for the court
. Even if I am not fortunate enough to live to old age in seclusion, I will still be a person remembered for all time. Therefore, I have two private thoughts in my heart: I want to be the number
one talent in the world." The monk said, "That's the first sentence. What's the second sentence?" Wei Yangsheng was about to speak but then swallowed his words, unable to express
his meaning. The monk said, "Since you're afraid to say the second sentence, let me say it for you." Wei Yangsheng said, "How could Master possibly tell me what's on my mind?" The monk said, "If I'm wrong,
I'm willing to accept punishment. But if I am right, please don't pretend to deny it." Wei Yangsheng said, "If Master is right, you're not only a Bodhisattva but also a deity. How could I dare to make excuses?" The monk
calmly said, "It's about marrying the most beautiful woman in the world." Wei Yangsheng was stunned. After a long pause, he replied, "Master is truly extraordinary! These two
private words are what I've been thinking about all day, yet you seem to have heard them and understood them immediately." The monk said, "
Haven't you heard that whispers in the human world are heard by Heaven like thunder?" Wei Yangsheng said, "Logically speaking, I shouldn't speak of such things to Master. But since Master has guessed it, I dare not..."
My master said that my Daoist heart is still shallow, while my desires are deep. Since ancient times, the four characters "beautiful woman
and talented man" have been inseparable; a talented man must be paired with a beautiful woman, and a beautiful woman must be paired with a talented man. Now, my talent goes without saying, and
my appearance also quite good. I often look in the mirror, and even if Pan An or Wei Jie were alive today, I wouldn't be inferior. Since Heaven has given me
a talented man, why not give me a woman to match him? Now… "If there were no beautiful women in the world, so be it. But if there were,
who else but me would seek such a spouse? Therefore, I am over twenty and still unmarried, not wanting to waste my talent and looks. Once I return and find
a beautiful woman to marry, and have a son to carry on the family line, my good wish will be fulfilled, and I will have no other thoughts. Not only will I turn back myself, but I will also
persuade my wife to join me on the other shore. What do you think, Master?" The monk sneered, "It seems that you, layman..." The intention was perfectly correct, but the Heavenly Father, who created these things, was somewhat
flawed. If an ugly form were bestowed upon the layman, and he possessed a sliver of clear-mindedness, he might attain enlightenment. Therefore, many people in
ancient times suffered from leprosy, epilepsy, broken hands and feet, and thus became immortals through divine punishment. Immortals are governed by this principle. The layman's
fate was only due to the Heavenly Father's excessive indulgence at the time of his birth, like parents loving their children, fearing only to harm their flesh in their youth. My son has a fiery
temper , and I can't bear to hit him or scold him. When he grows up, he only says that his flesh and temperament are given by heaven and earth, nurtured by his parents
, so he does whatever he wants. He commits crimes and suffers the whipping of officials and execution by the court, only then regretting that his parents were too indulgent
, leading to this day. This delicate
flesh and arrogant temperament are not a good omen. Layman, because of your appearance, you are the
first talented man, so you seek the first beautiful woman. Whether you can obtain her or not, even if you succeed, I fear that this
beautiful woman doesn't have the words "first" written on her forehead. If you see someone better, you'll want to go back to the better one.
If this beautiful woman is like you, unwilling to marry easily and waiting for the first talented man, you can still take her as a concubine.
But what if she finds a good man? What will you do then? If you insist on having your way, then all sorts of... The matter of falling into hell originates from this
. Do you, layman, still wish to fall into hell? Or go to heaven? If you are willing to fall into hell, then go and find the first beauty.
If you wish to go to heaven, please abandon your delusions and become a monk with me.” Wei Yangsheng said, “Master, your use of the words ‘heaven and hell’ is somewhat clichéd and doesn’t sound like the words of a high monk.
The principle of Chan meditation is nothing more than self-realization. Originally, to stand in the state of non-birth and non-death is to become a Buddha.” "Is there really a heaven to ascend
to? Even if one commits some transgressions, it merely tarnishes Confucian teachings. Is there really a hell to fall into?" The monk replied, "'The virtuous go to heaven, the wicked go to hell' is indeed a cliché. It's just that you scholars
can escape the cliché in everything, except for matters of self-cultivation and conduct. Heaven and hell are clearly indistinguishable. Even if
there is no heaven, one must take heaven as a stepping stone to goodness." Even without hell, one must take hell as a warning against evil. Since you
've already mentioned the cliché, I won't talk about future retribution in the underworld, only about present retribution in the living world, which will inevitably be another cliché. There's an old saying
: "I will not commit adultery with other men's wives, nor will others commit adultery with my own." These are extremely common clichés. However, no lustful person in the world has ever escaped
this trap; they commit adultery with other men's wives and daughters, and their wives and daughters are also violated by others. To escape this trap, one must refrain from adultery altogether. " If you want to commit adultery
, you'll inevitably be caught in a trap. Layman, do you want to escape the trap, or do you want to fall into it? If you want to fall into it, just go and find the
first beauty. If you want to escape the trap, please abandon your delusions and become a monk with me." Wei Yangsheng said, "Master's words are all very clear. It's just that when preaching to the ignorant, I have to explain everything thoroughly,
making them feel a chill down their spines before they learn to be wary. If I were to reason with us, it wouldn't be so." Although public laws are strict, their enforcement
is not without exception. While many adulterers are punished, many others escape retribution. If we were to go door-to-door to hunt down adulterers,
making their wives and daughters pay off their debts, then even Heaven would be condemned! In short, the cycle of retribution and divine justice is generally
infallible. Those who do not act wickedly should know this; it is a crucial topic for moral persuasion. Why resort to such extreme measures?” The monk said, “According to what you say…” Come, are there any adulterers in the world who escape retribution? It seems that Heaven's laws do not allow
anyone to escape punishment. Perhaps you, being kind and honest, have allowed someone to slip through the net. In my humble opinion,
there has never been a single person, past or present, who has committed adultery with another's wife and daughters without retribution. Historical records and oral traditions abound with such cases. Consider this: adultery with another's wife and daughters is an
advantageous act, so people are willing to tell others, hence the abundance of knowledge. The defilement of one's wife and daughters is an unfavorable act, so people are unwilling to speak of it. People say that
few know the truth. Among them are wives who conceal the truth from their husbands, daughters who conceal it from their husbands, and even their own families are unaware, yet they claim there is no retribution for adultery.
Only after death do they believe the ancient saying is true, but by then, they can no longer speak of this realization. Regardless of the adulterer's
