Volume 1, Chapter 001: The Legend of the Dragon
. In this unknown plane, the once mighty divine beast, the immortal dragon race, declined and eventually withdrew from worldly struggles to recuperate. Countless years later, humanity became the ruler of this plane, plunging it into conflict.
Legend has it that the powerful dragons possessed immense strength; a mere flick of their tails could destroy mountains and shatter the earth. Even gods dared not challenge them, making them the true rulers of the plane. However, due to inherent prejudice, the dragon race split into two lineages: divine dragons and dinosaurs. Their relationship deteriorated further. Divine dragons looked down on dinosaurs for their ugliness and arrogance, while dinosaurs despised divine dragons for their lack of wings, viewing them as snakes. Ultimately, they became bitter enemies and clashed violently.
The dragons are extremely arrogant, their haughty prejudices driving them to a frenzy. Using their divine powers, they clashed from the earth to the heavens, a battle that shook the very heavens and earth, causing rivers, lakes, and seas to howl in anguish. Countless lives were lost on the continent, and the gods were terrified. Even though they couldn't defeat them, they secretly united all available forces to seal the dragons. They believed that if things continued this way, the plane would be destroyed, and they too would face their doom. Thus, the gods and various divine beasts of the entire plane united.
The dragons, however, had always looked down on these gods and beasts. Before them, all creatures were mere reptiles, lowly and contemptible. Therefore, they disregarded their alliance, believing that a mere breath of dragon essence or a flick of their tails would pulverize these reptiles, leaving them no trace of their former glory.
Countless years later, the dragons' arrogance and pride left them without any allies, only enemies everywhere. Taking advantage of the dragons' weakened state, the gods and divine beasts launched a surprise attack, killing the vast majority of the dragons. However, they hadn't anticipated that the dragons' power was envied by the heavens. Even with only a hundred dragons and dinosaurs remaining, they inflicted heavy losses on the gods and divine beasts, resulting in near-mutual destruction on both sides. Even the surviving members of both sides would need hundreds of millions of years to regain their supernatural powers.
Since the great war between the dragons, humanity, relying on the wisdom bestowed upon them by the heavens, slowly rose from this ravaged land, eventually forming four ancient kingdoms, which gradually evolved into the four major settlements of today: the continent of China, Europe, Africa, and the Americas.
Countless years passed, and time itself seemed to have aged them. A group claiming to be descendants of the dragon established the first nation on the Divine Continent. Using the dragon as their totem, they expanded in all directions, overcoming countless unimaginable natural and man-made disasters with the dragon's temperament, spreading the seeds of life across the land.
Three thousand years passed, and the world was transformed. The Divine Continent was teeming with life. From the third thousand years onward, the descendants of the dragon gradually became the most powerful race. However, due to the dragon's inherently selfish nature, they fought endlessly. Thus, the world was divided and united, filled with swords and intrigues, and emperors and generals emerged in great numbers. Countless heroes vied for the common good of the Divine Continent, even at the cost of their passionate blood. From the time when the first emperor of the empire, Qin Shi Huang, lost his throne, the struggle for power intensified, with heroes from all walks of life vying for it.
On the continent of Shenzhou, war still raged. Emperor Taizong of Tang, a brilliant ruler, finally established the prosperous Tang Dynasty amidst the chaos, spreading the fame of the descendants of the dragon far and wide. However, fate was cruel; the empire's glory faded in less than four centuries, like withered grass and trees, leaving only its enduring name for posterity to lament.
Centuries later, foreign tribes rose up across Shenzhou. The glory of the descendants of the dragon had long been extinguished by these foreign powers, leaving them confined to a corner, known only as the Southern Song Dynasty.
Meanwhile, five great powers emerged on the continent: Western Xia, Yuan, Jin, Dali, and Tibet. Among them, Jin and Yuan were particularly powerful, possessing the largest territories and armies of their time.
The six states were embroiled in conflict, their intertwined interests leaving outsiders bewildered. Union and separation were commonplace; it was no longer surprising to see nations locked in life-or-death struggles one day become brothers the next. This perfectly illustrated the saying that between states, only pure self-interest prevailed, devoid of any sentiment—more hypocritical than prostitutes.
After the Jingkang Incident, Emperors Huizong and Qinzong were captured, along with the empress, concubines, princes, princesses, other members of the royal family, key ministers, court ladies, musicians, cooks, and others. All were taken north by the Jurchens. At this time, Huizong's ninth son, Prince Kang (Zhao Gou), had previously requested the Song imperial family to send a prince as a hostage but was deemed an imposter and sent back. He thus narrowly escaped this calamity, becoming the sole survivor of the royal family. He ascended the throne in Yingtian Prefecture with the recommendation of his ministers, later moving the capital to Lin'an, establishing the Southern Song Dynasty.
In Lin'an, the capital of the Southern Song Dynasty, throngs of tourists thronged the city, creating a bustling atmosphere. The war hadn't significantly affected the people, accustomed to a peaceful and comfortable life. Despite the more than a dozen emperors, the people continued to live in peace and prosperity. They remained indifferent to the tyrannical power of corrupt officials and the invincible strength of the Jin and Yuan armies. Regardless of who ruled the land, they could survive; the only question was how well they would live. This perfectly encapsulates the sentiment: "The peaks of Tongguan Pass stand like a gathering of mountains, the waves surge like fury, the Tongguan Pass is the gateway between mountains and rivers. Looking westward to the capital, my heart hesitates, saddened by the places where the Qin and Han dynasties once stood, their palaces now only dust. In prosperity, the people suffer; in ruin, the people suffer!"
