Sexual positions

Sexual positions refer to the positions used by partners during sexual intercourse. Theoretically, there should be countless sexual positions, but in reality, most different positions evolved from about six or seven basic positions. Some believe that only the male-on-top position is the only normal and acceptable sexual position; others claim that there should be many different variations of sexual positions, and that unless one can master all sexual positions, one is not a qualified sexual partner. Such rumors go further, suggesting that the more physically challenging the sexual position, the greater the sexual satisfaction. These are all false rumors. No single position has a special effect, and sexual ability should be determined by the satisfaction felt by the partner, not by how much one knows about sexual variations. ● Sexual Wisdom and Techniques Ancient books on sexual wisdom and techniques, such as the Kama Sutra, Annaga Ranga's Perfumed Garden, and Tao, offer several methods for enhancing sexual pleasure through new positions. In most people's minds, the Kama Sutra represents rare, sexy, and even impossible sexual positions. In fact, this book only explains 24 positions, and many of them are quite easy to achieve if the woman is flexible enough. In the *kama sutra*, most positions involve the woman lying face up, with various leg positions, and some positions where the woman is on top. In ancient India (late 15th or early 16th century), Kalyana Malla wrote the *ananga ranga* to prevent marital sex from becoming monotonous. This book introduces various combinations of sexual positions, such as: "uttana-bandha" (man-on-top supine position), "tryak-bandha" (side-lying position), "upavishta" (sitting position), and "purushayita-bandha" (role reversal or woman-on-top position). The Perfumed Garden, a product of late 15th-century male-dominated North African culture, offers numerous, mostly stimulating texts instructing men on sexual acts with their wives or concubines, but rarely discusses female experiences. Most of the 11 sexual positions described are quite gymnastically difficult, likely unsustainable for most partners. Similar descriptions to the Kama Sutra exist in Taoist thought. The author describes 26 sexual positions, almost all derived from four basic positions. These positions include male-on-top, female-on-top, close contact (side-up and face-to-face), and rear entry. Although these positions are similar to other ancient (and even modern) descriptions, they all have beautiful names (such as the Flying Butterfly, the Swallow, and the Phoenix Playing in the Red Cave) reflecting the Taoist belief in the harmony of Yin and Yang, meaning that everything involves the exchange of similarities and dissimilarities. Sexual union exchanges the two forces of Yin (meaning negative, passive, and fertile) and Yang (meaning positive, active, and depleting). Aside from the difference in intercourse, the sexual positions used by gay men and lesbians are similar to those used by heterosexuals. Gay men may engage in more anal sex than heterosexual couples, while lesbians are more likely to incorporate sex toys into their intercourse. However, among the many sexual positions, the experiences of homosexual and heterosexual couples are largely the same. ● The most common sexual positions include the man-on-top position, woman-on-top position, side-lying position, and rear-entry position. Some heterosexual couples and gay men also engage in anal sex. These positions can be performed lying down, sitting, standing, kneeling, or any combination of these positions. Each couple chooses a position based on their creativity and comfort. In Western culture, the man-on-top position is the most common sexual position. Since 19th-century Christian missionaries believed that the man-on-top position was the most natural and suitable sexual position, this position has also been called the "missionary position." They also encouraged foreign converts to abandon "animalistic" positions and adopt the male-on-top position. In this position, the woman lies face up with her legs spread, and either the man or woman guides the penis into the vagina. If the woman doesn't feel uncomfortable being pressed down, the man can lie flat on top of her; otherwise, he can support some or all of his weight with his elbows, hands, and knees. In addition, some women find the man's weight restricts their ability to move their pelvis. The woman can wrap her legs around the man's hips, back, or even place them on his shoulders. The higher the legs are raised, the deeper the man can thrust. However, some women do not enjoy the deeper penetration this position provides. The man-on-top position slightly restricts how the man can caress his partner, but the woman can freely caress the man or stimulate her clitoris. This is a great position for seeing and kissing your partner during intercourse. ● Woman-on-top position: In this position, the man lies face up, and the woman lowers herself onto his erect penis, allowing either the man or woman to guide the penis into her vagina. The woman can continue to bend her knees towards the man, or straighten her legs, or turn away from her partner. The partner can also switch from the man-on-top or side-lying position to this position. The woman-on-top position allows the woman to control the depth and speed of penetration. This position allows the penis to provide indirect but intense clitoral stimulation, making it easier for some women to reach orgasm than when on top of the male. Couples may prefer this position because their hands can caress each other more freely than in other positions, and they can see each other better. Some women may find this position too deep, but they can control the depth by lowering their bodies. During vigorous movement, the penis may slip out of the vagina, causing frustration. If the woman is trying to conceive, the woman-on-top position is generally not recommended because the male's semen will naturally flow out of the vagina. Of course, if the woman likes this position, she can simply change positions immediately after her partner ejaculates. Also, to ensure the woman's protruding belly doesn't obstruct intercourse, this is a very good position in late pregnancy. ● Side-lying position: This refers to the couple lying face-to-face on their sides during intercourse. A couple can start in this position or transition from a man-on-top position. Some people don't like this position because they can't penetrate very deeply when lying on their side. However, from another perspective, both partners can freely caress each other, and the face-to-face position allows for kissing. Because it's more difficult to achieve strong penetration in the side-lying position, it's ideal for people who must avoid strenuous activity. This position is suitable for pregnant partners because it allows the pregnant woman's abdomen to be less obstructive to intercourse compared to other positions (such as the man-on-top). ● Rear-entry position: In rear-entry, the man inserts his penis into the woman's vagina while she is facing away from him. This differs from anal sex, where the man inserts his penis into the partner's anus and rectum. In rear-entry, the woman can stand and bend forward for support, or she can support herself with her hands and knees while the man kneels behind her (commonly known as doggy style), or both can lie on their sides with the man facing the woman's back. Rear-entry allows for deeper penetration and more vigorous thrusting. The man's hands can freely caress the woman and easily reach her clitoris. However, in this position, the woman needs to reach behind her back to touch her partner. The disadvantage of rear-entry is that because the penis enters from behind, there is only minimal stimulation of the clitoris, and many couples dislike this position because it lacks face-to-face intimacy. A couple's choice of sexual position is based on a variety of reasons. The partner's comfort level with the position and their psychological barriers to trying new positions can both influence whether or not they adopt that position. Sometimes a couple chooses a position to prolong or accelerate orgasm. Sometimes, objective conditions (such as space and time availability) determine the sexual position. Some couples will exclude all other positions and choose only one because they feel it brings the greatest satisfaction. Others will consistently use or experiment with a few positions, but not necessarily include them in their sexual activities. Regardless of their decision, couples will find that sexual positions affect their mood and physical sensations during sex.
