Wealth and honor are bestowed by Heaven, not by our own will; why then strive so hard and greedily for them?
The mediocre and foolish revel daily, while the clever and intelligent are filled with daily anxieties.
Even Peng Zu, though old, died young; Shi Chong, though wealthy, did not live long.
All things in life are predetermined; how
can forced scheming lead to nothing? Now, let us tell you of a scholar from Xiushui County, Jiaxing Prefecture, in the previous dynasty. His surname was Feng, his given name De, and his nickname You Neng. He was thirty years old and
married a woman surnamed Sun. You Neng had been a stingy and miserly man since childhood, unwilling to waste a single penny.
Later everyone knew he was a miser, and gave him the nickname "Pi Zha Chi," meaning "not letting a drop of water leak through.
" Unexpectedly, in May of that year, his wife, Sun, contracted the plague and died within a few days. You Neng prepared the coffin, arranged the burial, and carried out the funeral.
After the burial was completed, and everything was finished, he sat at home, sullen and unhappy.
One evening, a sudden gust of wind arose, dark clouds gathered, and rain began to fall. By the
time , the rain had intensified. You Neng, accompanied by a maid, went out to close the door. There, they saw a sedan chair resting under the door,
with a woman dressed in white sitting inside. They also saw a young man, also dressed in plain clothes.
Two servants were carrying a food box. When the young man saw Feng Youneng come out, he knew he was the master of the house and hurriedly stepped forward
to bow, saying, "I only came to seek shelter from the rain and disturbed your home; I am truly sorry."

The man said, "My name is Liu Chun, and the person in the sedan chair is my younger sister. My sister's husband unfortunately passed away, and today marks

I doubt they

Liu Chun replied, "There's food and drink in my food box. We just need an empty room. We'll leave at dawn tomorrow."
Youneng said, "With this heavy rain, it's inconvenient to look outside. If you don't mind my humble abode, please stay here for the night."
Liu Chun quickly said, "If that's possible, it would be a great act of kindness." He hurriedly took out three hundred coins and gave them to Feng Youneng.
You Neng said, "How dare you underestimate me, brother! I absolutely refuse."
Liu Chun said, "If you refuse, brother, I dare not disturb your household and will take my leave now."
Seeing his attitude, You Neng said, "Since that's the case, I'll accept it for now." He instructed, "Quickly carry Madam to the back
hall for a seat." You Neng and Liu Chun went to the back hall and bowed again.
A beautiful young woman stepped out of the sedan chair and bowed. You Neng returned the bow and
looked at Her small feet, clad in white silk shoes, were like tiny magnolia petals, very charming.
Looking at her face, she possessed a beauty that was like:
a face like a lotus, a waist like a willow, and eyes that were exceptionally charming.
Her hair was lightly tied up in white silk, and she was like a fairy descending from the clouds.
After reading this, You Neng was momentarily stunned. Seeing the servants who had accompanied him, he quickly took out a pair of large
candles , lit them in the hall, and placed two wine boxes there. He arranged them on the left for the men and on the right for the women, inviting Feng De to sit. Feng De pretended not to sit, but Liu Chun
grabbed him and wouldn't let go. Feng You Neng sat below and drank with Liu Chun. After a few cups, Liu distributed the food and wine to the servants and
sedan chair bearers before leaving. Seeing that Liu had finished her wine, You Neng quickly instructed them to prepare bedding and settle her in the west side room to rest.
He spoke with Liu Chun again, asking, "What did your brother-in-law do when he was alive?"
Liu Chun replied, "That's a long story. My late brother-in-law was a carefree man. But his father
had amassed a vast estate. Unexpectedly, within five years, both his parents passed away, leaving no descendants. My late brother-in-law,
nearing thirty, had no children and no lineage to carry on. If he had no descendants, to whom would he entrust this family? Driven by
his children's desires, he took his own life."
