Wuxia Against the Tide

Chapter One:
A vast expanse of misty air stretches to the horizon; in what year did a long star fall from the blue sky?
Illusory cliffs and cloud-shrouded trees, a famous maiden's golden palace, the ruins of a tyrannical city.
The arrow-like wind stings the eyes, the greasy water stains the flowers with a fishy stench.
The sound of mandarin ducks' cries echoes, the autumn leaves rustle in the corridor.
In the palace, the King of Wu is intoxicated, a weary traveler from the Five Lakes fishes alone to awaken.
He asks the silent blue waves, his white hair helpless against the green mountains.
The water reflects the sky, the high balustrade sends off the chaotic crows, the setting sun sinks on the fishing shore. He
drinks again and again, ascends the Qin Terrace, autumn and clouds are level.
This poem, "Eight-Tone Ganzhou," is a line from a poem by the Song Dynasty poet Wu Wenying. Now, in a carved courtyard, before a pavilion, it is being recited by a young man in brocade robes, his voice soaring and passionate, especially the line "In the palace, the King of Wu is intoxicated..." At the end of the poem, he sighs deeply, the lingering resonance echoing.
This courtyard is carved with jade railings, elegant and unique. Winter plum blossoms bloom in the garden, their fragrance filling the air. The young man in brocade robes had his hair tied up in a high crown, his eyes were clear and handsome, his eyebrows were arched and his figure was slender. He was undeniably a dashing young gentleman, yet for some reason, his brow was furrowed with worry.
"Young Master." A voice came from the inner courtyard. The young man turned around and saw an old servant with white hair approaching. Although the old servant had a full head of white hair, he showed no signs of old age. On the contrary, he was full of energy, walking with a vigorous and capable gait.
"Uncle Hua." The young man in brocade robes nodded slightly. "Have they all left?"
Uncle Hua nodded, a trace of sadness on his face. "Reporting to Young Master, all one hundred men under my command have dispersed. I have already arranged for the steward to distribute the travel expenses. Although they were reluctant, they have already left. Young Master, it is not that this old servant is being nosy, but as the saying goes, 'An army is raised for a thousand days to be used in one.' If we use these men tomorrow
, they will be a formidable force." "Is that so?" The young master in brocade robes looked up at the sky with his hands behind his back. "Today I am facing a great calamity, my life
hanging by a thread. These men all have families and have followed me for many years. How can I bear to let them die for me? On the contrary, you, Uncle Hua, I have left you enough silver. You should set off for your hometown tonight." Uncle Hua said in a deep voice, "Young Master, I was a wanderer in the martial world years ago. I was saved by the master and have survived for more than twenty years. Although I have not been involved in the martial world for the past twenty years, I have not neglected my skills. Young Master, please do not despise this old man. Let me repay the Fang family's kindness one more time!" His fists were clenched, and he looked very excited.
The young man in brocade robes was deeply moved and stepped forward to bow to the old servant, "Uncle Hua, I... thank you very much."
It was the third year of the Tianbao era of the Ming Dynasty. The emperor neglected state affairs, the Wei faction held power, and the people suffered greatly. Furthermore, the Eastern and Western Depots and the Embroidered Uniform Guard were everywhere. Any official who expressed dissatisfaction would face confiscation of their property or even execution. For a time, the Wei family's word was law, and no one dared disobey.
General Fang Mingguo had repeatedly punished the Wei faction for upholding justice. However, skilled members of the Eastern Depot and the Embroidered Uniform Guard secretly entered his residence at night, accusing him of harboring troublemakers and slandering the court, and had him taken to the Ministry of Justice. Fortunately, Fang Mingguo had served as an official for many years and had many connections; he was spared the death penalty but not escaped punishment, ultimately being exiled to Cangzhou. Even so, he suffered greatly in prison. The injustice was reversed, yet it all seemed justified.
Fang Mingguo's nephew, Fang Liangyu, who lived in Luoyang, upon hearing this terrible news, immediately rushed back to his hometown. The general's men had already been either arrested or escaped, with only a few loyalists remaining to gather intelligence daily. Fang Liangyu, shrewd and decisive, immediately dismissed the crowd while simultaneously preparing an ambush along the prison cart's route to rescue her uncle. Fang Liangyu
was deeply moved by Hua Bo's loyalty and was about to offer some heartfelt words when a commotion erupted outside. There was wild laughter, a woman's scream, followed by the clash of weapons, and then a muffled groan—someone was clearly injured.
Fang Liangyu and Hua Bo exchanged a glance. "Oh no, the Yan brothers!" Suddenly, they sprang to life, rushing outside. The guards today were the family retainers, the Yan brothers, skilled in martial arts; who had managed to break in?
Hua Bo, with his long strides, reached the door in a few strides. Just as he looked around, Fang Liangyu's figure appeared on the other side. Hua Bo was overjoyed. "Young Master, it's been so many years! I never expected your lightness skill to be so agile and graceful. I wonder what kind of skill it is, that it surpasses even my 'Eight Steps to Catch the Cicada' technique."
A man in the arena was engaged in a fierce fight with the Yan brothers, who were guarding him. The man had a stubble beard, wore an embroidered blue robe, and held a small iron fan. He fought the Yan brothers' twin swords with ease. The eldest Yan brother had a small hole in his arm, and blood was gushing out. But the Yan brothers fought like mad tigers, risking their lives.
Even in the midst of the fight, the man couldn't resist uttering cold words: "Why are you two boys fighting so desperately? This girl isn't your mother. What's wrong with letting me play with her?" This remark elicited wild laughter from the two men behind him. One of them was around forty years old, with a weasel-like face and constantly shifting eyes. Another burly man had a young maidservant, about sixteen or seventeen years old, in a blue dress, in his arms. The maidservant, presumably immobilized by pressure points, lay limp in his embrace, her eyes pleading with shame and indignation.
"Since your Fang family is finished anyway, why not go and have some fun with us, the 'Three Heroes of Bliss'? Wouldn't that be better, haha!" In his smugness, the burly man kissed the maidservant's face several times. "This little girl looks charming and adorable; she'll be enough for us three heroes to pamper!"
The Three Heroes of Bliss were underworld figures in the martial arts world of Hunan and Hubei, committing all sorts of crimes, from rape and kidnapping to other misdeeds. After joining the Western Depot, they became even more ruthless.
The burly man, Jin Huihui, possessed a martial arts skill that was nine-tenths perfect; his entire body, except for the "Zhihai" acupoint an inch below his navel, was completely immune to swords and blades. The second brother, Jia Zhi, was utterly unambitious and only interested in women. It was he who suggested coming here; since the General was already under arrest, there was no one in charge of the household, so it was perfect to take whatever gold, silver, and beautiful women he wanted. The third brother, Teng Ba Hai, was the most skilled in martial arts, considered himself a romantic, and liked to use a fan as a weapon.
"So who are you? It's the scum of the martial world, the lackeys of the Western Depot, the lowlifes of the two lakes, the 'Three Dogs of Bliss'!" The voice clearly reached everyone's ears, and everyone was greatly surprised.
The burly man, Jin Huihui, finally noticed the young man in brocade robes. "Who are you? Are you out of your mind?!" Fang Liangyu
sneered. "You don't even know me, yet you dare to come to the Fang family and cause trouble? Put the person down obediently, cut off your own arm, and I'll spare your dog's life!"
Jin Huihui was startled, looking Fang Liangyu up and down. Suddenly remembering someone, he gasped, "You could be…?"
The weasel-faced second brother, Jia Zhi, drew a large, ghost-headed dagger from his waist. "Who cares who dares to swagger in front of our Western Depot? I…" "One strike and he's done for!"
The burly man released the maid, grabbed Jia Zhi by the collar, and slapped him five times. "You bastard! You don't even recognize 'Lord Biejian Wenhou' Fang Gongzi? I'll wake you up, you blind fool!" He then cried out, "Third brother, stop hitting him! Come back!" He knelt down and kowtowed repeatedly, "Young Master Fang, please forgive my blindness. I've made a fool of myself, like trying to teach a master craftsman to do something he doesn't understand..." He was clearly terrified. Jia
Zhi looked bewildered, but he understood, "Bie—Jian—Wen—Hou!"
—Bie—Jian Wenhou, a master swordsman with unpredictable swordsmanship and exceptional martial arts skills. He was gentle to friends and ruthless to enemies. He once slaughtered the three elders of the "Blood Killing Sect," the number one underworld gang in the martial arts world, and wiped out the seven leaders of the Evil Tiger Stronghold in one night. He hated evil as if it were his enemy, and that was Fang Liangyu before him.
Before Tengba Hai could even process what was happening, he yelled, "I'm almost done with these two brats! Almost there, almost over!"
Amidst the shouts, a deep voice roared, "Let's see who's finished!" A figure soared from the rooftop, like a giant owl, creating a whirlpool as it charged into the fray. Before Tengba Hai could react, the figure had already descended from above, striking down with a palm. Tengba Hai, using a "playing the pipa" technique, forced back the Yan brothers, then "pointed to the sky and drew lines on the ground," raising the tip of his iron fan to meet the attack. Without hesitation, the palm struck the fan, a powerful force slamming the handle back, striking Tengba Hai in the chest and piercing his body!
The figure spun in the air, then lunged at the second brother, Jia Zhi. With a shout, Jia Zhi's ghost-headed saber was swept into the air, and when it fell back down, it was bent and deformed beyond recognition. Jia Zhi was already spitting out blood, clearly beyond saving.
"Oh no, it's the Vermilion Bird!" With a scream, Jin Huihui, terrified, turned around and ran away. The figure clung to him like a leech, relentlessly pursuing him, striking him three times from behind. Jin Huihui sprinted a hundred meters, blood streaming from his eyes and mouth. Even with a body of steel, these three blows ruptured his internal organs!
The figure finally came to a stop, revealing himself to be a young man with a bright and cheerful face. One would never guess, without witnessing it firsthand, that he had annihilated the three legendary figures of the underworld in such a short time. The man bowed to Fang Liangyu, "I was careless for a moment, allowing such villains to cause trouble in the Fang residence. Please forgive me, Brother Fang!"
Hua Bo nodded and smiled, and Fang Liangyu was overjoyed, "Haha, you've finally arrived, Ya Xin!"
— "Vermilion Bird" Fei Ya Xin was the protector Fang Liangyu had arranged to be in charge of security at the Fang residence.
