Studying "Interesting History of Zhaoyang"

The classic erotic novel *Zhaoyang Qu Shi* (also known as *Xinbian Chuxiang Zhaofeiyan Zhaoyang Qu Shi*, a four-volume work, was printed around the first year of the Tianqi reign of the Ming Dynasty. The Ming edition is held in a private collection in Japan, while Qing editions and manuscripts circulate.) Volume One, compiled by Gu Hangyan, tells of a mountain overseas called Songguo Mountain. This mountain is quite interesting, with strange peaks and rocks, ancient pines and cypresses, flowers that never fade in all seasons, and fruits that ripen in every season. Only deer roam freely, and the winding paths are filled with mist, clouds, bamboo, and trees. It is a place untouched by worldly affairs, where one can live a carefree and immortal life. At the summit is a cave inscribed with "Wuzhen Xianjing" (Enlightenment Realm). What kind of monster dwells inside? It is a nine-tailed fox spirit who has lived forever. Since Daji's incarnation, he has cultivated on this mountain for thousands of years, gathering thousands of smaller foxes, and calling himself the Wuzhen King. He had the foxes practice martial arts, wielding spears and swords, while he himself focused on cultivating his inner self. One day, in the bright sunshine of spring, amidst blooming flowers and birds, King Wuzhen instructed the foxes to gather rare flowers, exotic fruits, and fine wines for a feast. When King Wuzhen was half-drunk, he spoke of the methods of absorbing yin and yang, and his heart stirred, his desire igniting. He said to the foxes, "I have been cultivating myself on this mountain for over a thousand years, yet I have not achieved enlightenment. I suppose it is because I have not attained true yang. I now wish to travel beyond the mountain. If I could encounter a man of immortal age and venerable bearing, I could release my primordial yang, shed my physical body, and thus fulfill my life's great destiny." The foxes replied, "This is a crucial matter. We have often thought about it. If Your Majesty achieves enlightenment, we too can attain it and shed our fur." King Wuzhen then entrusted all matters in the cave to the two foxes, Miaohui, instructing them, "Be very careful. I will return soon." Miaohui readily accepted the order. King Wuzhen locked the door and appointed several strong foxes to guard the cave entrance. He then traveled alone to a secluded spot. He transformed himself into a beautiful woman. How did he dress? A poem testifies: "West River Moon": Her hair was styled in a clever black bun, she wore a white dress. Her three-inch golden lotus feet swayed lightly, her slender waist was indescribable. Her jade fingers were delicate, her lips like spring bamboo shoots, fragrant with scent. She had never tried on her new makeup before, she resembled Chang'e, the Moon Goddess. But let's not dwell on King Wuzhen's transformation. Now, at the western end of Songguo Mountain, there is a mountain called Qingqiu Mountain. This mountain is secluded and has many scenic spots, as described in the poem: Wild cranes perch on tall trees, mountain birds sing around the stream; gazing at the flowing water, I contemplate transcending the world, forgetting myself amidst peaches and rocks. Bees and butterflies are my constant companions, smoke and clouds accompany me; in stillness, I diligently cultivate myself, this place can grant immortality. No one comes to the mountain, only wild grasses and flowers, animal hooves and bird tracks. Nestled in a mountain hollow stood a pavilion with a plaque above its door that read "Purple Robe Taoist Temple." Who, you might wonder, lived there? It was a swallow spirit who called himself "Purple Robe Immortal," extremely lustful. Although he had cultivated in this mountain for over five hundred years, he could no longer transcend his lustful nature. He gathered thousands of young swallows, spending his days in blissful pleasure. He would catch fish and shrimp in the streams, gather fruits in the mountains, play music, sing, and dance, indulging in all his desires. It was February, the spring sunshine was bright, and his lust was hard to suppress. A poem testifies to this: "Coming to the city, I felt the beautiful scenery, the red apricot blossoms on the branches exuded the long spring; suddenly I heard the warbling of orioles, and my heart was already captivated by her." The Purple Robe Immortal felt somewhat drowsy and said to the young swallows, "Such spring scenery should not be wasted. I wish to take a leisurely stroll outside the mountain. You all stay here and look around; I'll be right back. If I encounter a woman and take advantage of her true yin, then perhaps I can achieve enlightenment?" He then went to his room, put on a pair of three-layered cloud-patterned shoes, and swayed out the door. He encountered a fan, and with a gust of wind, he rose up and instantly arrived at the crossroads before the mountain. He saw a woman, about fifteen or sixteen years old, sitting alone by the roadside. Yan Jing pondered, "Why is there such a beautiful woman here? Shall I stand here and watch her?" He then lifted his clothes and sat under the shade of a willow tree, pretending to recite poetry and sing. Unbeknownst to him, the woman, who was actually the King of Enlightenment in disguise, had already seen the young man before her and was delighted. Thinking to himself, "This official must be an angel, come to fulfill my wish," he pretended to cry and said, "Someone has saved me; I am willing to marry him." Unexpectedly, these words struck a chord with Yan Jing, who quickly stood up, bowed deeply, and said, "My lady, this is a desolate wilderness, teeming with wolves and foxes. Why have you come here?" Upon hearing "foxes," Wuzhen inwardly sneered and replied, "This lowly concubine is a daughter of an official family in Hainan, raised in seclusion. How could I have come to this place? It was only because the other day, seeing the bright moon in the sky, I couldn't bear to leave this beautiful night. Meixiang and I opened the door to the back garden, admiring it until almost midnight, when a gust of wind shook me here..." She waited until dawn, looking around and finding no one, but her stomach was growling with hunger. She saw a mulberry orchard and wanted to pick some mulberries to fill her stomach, but there were none. She wanted to go to Hainan, but it was already late, and she feared being cheated on the way, a truly miserable experience. Now, fortunately, you, sir, have come here. I hope you will take me back home to tell my parents about my situation, and I wish to marry you.” Yan Jing said, “Saving a life is better than a seven-story pagoda; what you say is very true, madam. But you are hungry, and it is late. The journey to Hainan is long, and your shoes are narrow; how can you walk such a long distance? Why don’t you stay at my house for the night? I will take you home tomorrow morning.” The woman said, “I have no choice but to go with you, sir.” Yan Jing led the woman back home. Before long, they arrived at the door. When the swallows saw the swallow spirit return, they all came out to greet him. Seeing the woman, they asked the swallow spirit, "Whose family is this, bringing her back?" The swallow spirit replied, "This is the daughter of an official from Hainan. She was blown here by a demonic wind, so I brought her home to marry me. You should quickly prepare a feast for her." The swallows exclaimed, "Excellent! Excellent! We've got another wife for the bandit chief!" Wuzhen Wang entered and, seeing the scene inside, secretly rejoiced, thinking, "I thought he was just an ordinary man, but he's actually a cultivator. I'll just leak a few drops of his vital energy, and my plan will succeed!" A short while later, the swallows prepared a table of vegetables, wine, and food—mostly pheasants, sparrows, shrimp, and fish. It was late, and the candles shone brightly. The two sat facing each other. The swallow spirit drank a few cups, but the woman pretended not to eat. The swallow spirit said, "If you don't eat, I'll kneel down." The woman had no choice but to drink one cup. Yan Jing, in high spirits, drank several more cups and felt slightly tipsy. He said to the woman, "My lady, since you have promised me your lifelong commitment, I shouldn't be so hasty. But you are a widow, and I am a lonely man. Why not act like a pair of phoenixes for now, and then become husband and wife?" The woman replied, "Without the consent of my parents or the words of a matchmaker, how can this be?" Yan Jing said, "Don't refuse. Let Deng Yue act as matchmaker now. What's wrong with that? If you utter even a single word of objection, I'll make sure you never have a chance to return home." Although the woman said this, she secretly wished it to happen. She pretended to cover her face with her hands and said, "My lord, you are so kind. It's not that I'm unwilling, but a girl like me is too shy to say it." Upon hearing this, Yan Jing smiled broadly and said, "My lady, since we are husband and wife, why be so shy?" He then put his arm around the woman's shoulder, stood up, and ordered the servants to clear away the wine and food. He then took the candles and went to their room. Xiao Yan and the others ate their supper and went to sleep. A poem testifies to this: *Qing Ping Yue*: Graceful and swaying, she displays her charming beauty. Wanting to express her innermost feelings, yet still hesitant, she is ashamed to face the banquet before the tower. Her rosy cheeks begin to bloom at dusk, her hair disheveled, her golden hairpins unkempt. How enviable is the loving affection between them, their marriage a gift from heaven. Meanwhile, the swallow spirit and the woman entered the room, closed the door, removed their silk robes and embroidered shoes, and climbed onto the bed. The swallow spirit also undressed himself, hardening his whisk to an iron-like consistency, and spitting out saliva to rub on the woman. The woman held on tightly, waiting for the swallow spirit to ejaculate before relaxing to take his virginity. Little did she know that this swallow spirit had also hardened his whisk to an indestructible consistency, and after a whole night of restraint, he showed no signs of impotence. Seeing that he remained tightly closed, the fox spirit feigned weakness, saying, "My darling, I've used all my strength, but I can't get in. Now I'm exhausted and about to ejaculate, so I have no choice but to loosen up a bit and let me have my way in for a good time. It won't be a wasted night." The woman said, "I'm afraid it will hurt inside. You must put it in slowly." The fox spirit said, "I know when you loosen up." The woman slowly spread her legs, and the fox spirit used his skills, thrusting with all his might. With a soft "plop," he entered her. This woman was not a virgin, but a fox spirit in disguise, yet she could withstand it. Their passion was intense, and they were undefeated. The woman thought to herself, "This young man knows some tricks." The fox spirit thought to himself, "How does this woman have such skills?" They didn't say a word, but continued their lovemaking, going at it for another round. After all, how could the swallow spirit withstand the fox spirit's magic? The fox spirit used a method of binding and locking the swallow spirit's dantian, causing it to ejaculate profusely. The swallow spirit was truly resentful and, in a fit of anger, fell asleep. The swallow spirit couldn't sleep anymore, thinking that he must gather immortal herbs to synthesize a yin pill and consume it before he could obtain the fox spirit's true yin. The next morning, after washing and dressing, the woman pretended to go home. The swallow spirit said, "Let me personally go to the garden to fetch some fruit and take you home." The woman said, "Thank you for your kindness, sir. Please go and come back quickly." The swallow spirit then took the water and fire basket and went out, instructing Little Swallow, "Serve my wife well." He went straight into the mountains. Meanwhile, the Wuzhen King, having obtained his primordial yang that night, felt his face glow, his spirits soar, and he felt a surge of immortal energy. He wanted to obtain the fox spirit's true yin again that night, but firstly, he thought the fox spirit had cultivated, and if he couldn't preserve it, he might lose; secondly, he feared the fox spirit would return and discover his deception, making escape impossible, which would be disastrous. "Why not take advantage of his absence and use a clever escape plan? What's wrong with that?" She then said to the young swallows, "When I came yesterday, I was in such a hurry that I didn't check, and only today did I realize that a gold hairpin was missing. This hairpin is priceless, and I want to go to the woods to look for it. But my husband isn't home, what should I do?" The swallows said, "Since it's a treasure, if we don't go looking for it, someone might pick it up. We can send some of us to find it and return it to you, Madam." The woman said, "I don't want you to go looking for it. If you pick it up and then say it's not there, how can I believe you? I must go looking for it myself, and I don't want you to come with me." Seeing her doubt, the swallows said, "Since Madam doubts me, please go and look for it." Then they saw the Madam...He happily went out, disappearing like a wisp of smoke. A short while later, he reached a thicket. Unexpectedly, several swallows were resting on a clump of trees there. They chatted idly, when suddenly he saw his wife, who was laughing. She approached and muttered to herself, "My lord, my lord, you think I'm a mortal woman, but little do you know I'm an old fox spirit. Now I've depleted your primordial yang, but after I ascend to heaven, I'll come back to save you." Having said this, she revealed her true form, displayed her supernatural powers, and rode a cloud of auspiciousness back to her cave. But let's leave that aside for now. Now, let's return to the story of the swallow spirit who gathered a basket of immortal herbs, thinking to herself that tonight she would surely have her true yin extracted, and she wasn't afraid of flying to heaven. Upon entering, the swallow asked, "Where is the lady?" The swallows replied, "The lady went to the forest to look for Baochai yesterday." The swallow spirit shouted, "Go and fetch her quickly! What if she has been tricked away or eaten by tigers and wolves?" Just then, a little swallow that had been resting in the tree rushed in, panting, and reported, "Your Majesty, something terrible has happened! The lady, the lady!" She was so breathless that she couldn't speak for a moment. Yan Jing asked in a panic, "Could it be that the lady was lured away?" Xiao Yan replied, "No." Yan Jing said, "What if she wasn't eaten by tigers and wolves?... " Xiao Yan said, "The lady wasn't eaten by tigers and wolves, but Your Majesty was eaten by the lady." Yan Jing said, "How so? I was eaten by the lady?" Xiao Yan said, "That woman wasn't a respectable woman, but an old fox spirit. We were hiding in a tree when we saw her come over with a grin, saying, 'My lord, my lord, you thought I was a respectable woman, but you didn't know I was an old fox spirit. I've defiled you. After I ascend to heaven, I'll come back to save you.' In an instant, she disappeared on a cloud." Upon hearing this, Yan Jing was furious. He slammed his hands on the table and said, "Enough, enough! How could there be such a woman here? And how could she know the method of swallowing the lock, causing my true yang to leak out? I wonder what kind of wicked beast dares to be so bold as to ruin my centuries of cultivation. How can I let this go?" He immediately wrote down the incantation and sent two little swallows to invite the local earth god to come and question him. The little swallows obeyed and went to invite the earth god. When the earth god heard that the swallow spirit had come to invite him, he was so frightened that his soul almost left his body. He said, "What summons does Your Majesty have for me?" The little swallows said, "Go and you will find out." The earth god had no choice but to straighten his hat and belt and run to the door. The little swallows reported that the swallow spirit came out to see him. The earth god reported, "I don't know what decree Your Majesty has summoned this humble god for?" The swallow spirit said, "You are the local earth god, what is your business? Why do you allow such a wicked beast to cause trouble here?" The earth god said, "I have not seen any fighting, nor have I seen any disturbance in the mountains and forests. This humble god truly does not know." The swallow spirit said, "You still deny knowing? Quickly find out and report back to me, or I will not forgive you." The earth god, upon hearing this, dared not delay. He hurriedly replied, "Please allow me to come and inquire." You might ask, dear reader, why is the Earth God, a righteous deity, afraid of this Swallow Spirit? Well, this Swallow Spirit has cultivated for hundreds of years, mastering many powerful magics. He frequently threatens to demolish the Earth God's temple and drive him away. Therefore, the Earth God fears him. He had no choice but to go outside and ask the little swallows, "Why is that monster making such a fuss here?" The little swallows replied, "Nothing much, but that wretched thing! Last night he transformed into a woman, and Your Majesty thought she was a real woman. You slept with him all night, and he defiled your virginity. That's why you're so angry." The local earth god said, "So that's what it's about! How can you not recognize a demon just because he transformed into a woman? He didn't remember me, the local earth god, when he was having fun last night. Now you want me to take the blame. Tell me, everyone, did you see him go from which direction?" The little swallows said, "He said he was an old fox spirit. He rode a cloud, and in a gust of wind, he went west. If we can find out more about him, we'll bring that demon back and take turns defileing his true yin and yang every night to restore my true self. That would be true heroism." Upon hearing this, the local earth god knew it was a fox spirit and had some clues. He rode a cloud and looked out from the sky. He saw the old fox spirit holding a grand banquet in her cave, with all the demons celebrating. King Wuzhen sat high above, with the little foxes on either side. Halfway through their drinking, King Wuzhen said to the two foxes, Miaohui, "The primordial yang I have attained is not that of an ordinary mortal, but rather the elixir of immortality cultivated through practice, thus achieving enlightenment. I intend to ascend to heaven on the fifteenth to pay homage to the Jade Emperor. However, I fear this demon will discover my dwelling place and lead his army to battle, which would inevitably harm my spirit. I will ascend to heaven tonight at midnight to pay my respects to the Jade Emperor." Miaohui replied, "Your Majesty's words are most true." The fox spirit entrusted all the items in the cave, along with his own seal and all his servants, to Miaohui for safekeeping, instructing her to cultivate diligently there, promising to meet her again soon when the elixir was complete. Miaohui bowed in gratitude and accepted the gifts, then offered King Wuzhen three or four large cups. The foxes drank heartily for a while, until dusk approached. The Earth God, having observed for a long time, recognized him and descended from the clouds to meet the swallow spirit. The swallow spirit asked, "Have you found out his whereabouts?" The local earth god replied, "I know the details. The demon's home is about two hundred li from here. There is a mountain there, and on the mountain is a cave. Above the cave is written 'Wuzhen Immortal Realm.' Inside the cave, an old fox sits at the head of the table, hosting a banquet to celebrate. He has entrusted everything in the cave to the two fox spirits, Miaohui, and will go to see the Jade Emperor at midnight tonight. If Your Majesty wants to raise an army, you must do so as soon as possible." Upon hearing this, the swallow spirit felt even more enraged. He immediately gathered three thousand brave swallows and set off to raid the fox spirit's lair. The swallows received the order and fought bravely, each striving to be the first. The swallow spirit, fully armed, wielding a halberd and wearing golden armor, led the swallows out. Look at those swallow spirits, so powerful! They summoned wind and blew all the swallows into the air. Looking around, they saw a cave to the west, with the words "Wuzhen Immortal Realm" written above it. Xiao Yan came down to report, and only then did the swallow spirits get up. They all went to Songguo Mountain, sending two Xiao Yans ahead to the cave to make arrangements. The Xiao Yans reached the cave entrance and shouted loudly, "Old fox spirit in the cave, come out and surrender quickly, and all will be well. If you refuse even half a word, we'll beat you to a pulp and raze your cave to the ground!" The little fox asked, "What kind of monster are you, daring to come here?" The Xiao Yans replied, "We are the Purple-Clad Immortals of Qingqiu Mountain. Because your master came and stole our vital essence, we are furious and have personally led our troops here to exterminate you and your pack of furry spirits." Hearing this, the little fox knew that the old fox had been caught. He was in a hurry, his feet flying, rushing inside in a panic. Unexpectedly, he walked too fast and bumped his head against a stone pillar, creating a bloody hole. Blood flowed all over his body, and he fainted. The foxes, having been quickly revived, asked, "Why did you fall like this in such a panic?" The little fox replied, "There's an army outside challenging Your Majesty. I was terrified and rushed to inform Your Majesty, only to suffer this ordeal." The foxes hurriedly reported to King Wuzhen, who, after a heart-piercing punch, exclaimed, "I knew that man was a demon who had achieved enlightenment. Knowing he would cause trouble, I hastily ascended to Heaven to report to the Jade Emperor, hoping he would send celestial generals to subdue him. I didn't expect him to arrive so quickly. Now that things have come to this, we might as well go all the way! Quickly gather three thousand soldiers and subdue this scoundrel!" "Kill them all, not a single one of them, to eliminate future troubles." Wuzhen hurriedly donned his armor, drew his eagle-feathered sword, and rushed out of the cave, shouting, "Ignorant beast, what brings you here?" The swallow spirit cursed, "What skills do you have, you hairy thing? You dare to steal my vital essence? Come forward and take my halberd!" Wuzhen said, "Who told you to be greedy for momentary pleasure and fall into my trap? Aren't you ashamed? Go and cultivate for a few years, and I will come back to enlighten you later. There will be benefits. Don't talk nonsense here and seek death." The swallow spirit said, "You hairy fox, you care about your own future and don't care about my life's important matter." Then it thrust its halberd at his face. King Wuzhen hurriedly parried with his sword. They fought back and forth, charging and colliding, for more than ten rounds. In the end, the fox spirit was fighting on foot, how could it withstand the swallow spirit's light body, flying back and forth, wielding its halberd left and right, killing the fox spirits who were falling to the ground. Wuzhen King panicked, quickly untied the gourd from his waist, chanted an incantation, and displayed his supernatural power, releasing a strange wind that whipped up sand and stones. This blew the swallow spirit and its minions into the air, scattering them into clumps, making them unable to move freely. The fox spirits below watched as they fell one by one, binding them one by one, intending to take them to their cave and slowly finish them off. However, this day was the third day of the third lunar month, the birthday of the Northern Pole Protector Saint True Lord, who was on his way to Heaven to pay homage to the Jade Emperor, and happened to be passing through this mountain. Hearing the strange wind, the True Lord asked, "What demons are causing trouble ahead?" The Heavenly Lord Deng looked with his all-seeing eye and saw a group of fox spirits surrounding a fox king, causing chaos and blowing sand and stones, making the swallow spirits unsteady on their feet. The Heavenly Lord held up a gleaming demon-revealing mirror and shone it in that direction. The demon soldiers on both sides, seeing the mirror, knew it was the True Lord. They lost all interest in binding him and fled in panic. Some hid in mountain hollows, others in caves, pushing and shoving each other. It was laughable how these fox spirits, who had been so cunning just moments before, now wished they could find a crack in the ground to hide in. Seeing this scene, the Heavenly Lord Deng laughed loudly, "Ignorant fools, why are you suffering like this?" He then reported to the True Lord, "Below is a battle between fox spirits and swallow spirits. We beseech the True Lord to issue an order to eliminate them." The True Lord said, "These demons should be exterminated, but since it is my birthday today, I will spare their lives. I hereby send you with this command flag to subdue the two demons and take them to the Jade Emperor for his decree." The Heavenly Lord Deng took the Seven-Star Command Flag and stepped forward. An old man with white hair, wearing a square scarf and holding a cane, knelt trembling on the ground, saying, "This humble god was unaware of the Heavenly Lord's descent and failed to greet him properly; I deserve to die ten thousand times!" The Heavenly Lord said, "Since you are the local earth deity, how could you allow these two wicked beasts to make a scene here? You cannot escape the crime of neglecting your duty." The earth deity kowtowed and said, "How dare this humble god harbor such wicked beasts? But that fox spirit has cultivated in Songguo Mountain for thousands of years, and that swallow spirit has cultivated in Qingqiu Mountain for hundreds of years, yet they have not attained enlightenment. Their magic is truly formidable! This humble god was unable to subdue them. Today, I don't know why they are making such a scene here, and this humble god had no way to deal with it. Fortunately, the Heavenly Lord has arrived; this humble god is extremely fortunate." The Heavenly Lord said, "Since that is the case, I have my reasons." He then stepped forward and shouted, "You two demons, what great powers do you possess to dare to cause trouble here?" He then took out a demon-binding rope, bound the two demons, and presented them to the True Lord on the clouds. The two demons could only kowtow and beg for their lives. The True Lord said, "Today should have been...""I will exterminate you, considering that you two have not caused any trouble since you entered the mountains to cultivate; secondly, it is my birthday today, so I will spare your lives for now. Take them to see the Jade Emperor, and there will be a proper judgment." Deng Tianjun, with the two spirits, rode on a cloud and entered the Heavenly Gate in an instant. It was just as the Jade Emperor was holding his morning court. The True Lord stepped forward, holding his tablet, and knelt down to report, "Your subject, the True Lord of the Northern Pole, today is my birthday, and I have come to pay my respects before the palace." The Jade Emperor said, "You shall be granted the privilege of attending the Queen Mother's Peach Banquet." The True Lord then reported, "Your subject has another matter to report. I was passing through Songguo Mountain when I encountered a group of demons fighting. I have subdued them and dared not kill them without permission. I have brought them here to await your judgment." The Jade Emperor saw the two spirits and said, "You two cultivated in the mountains and were considered earth immortals. How could you run amok there? Now that you have been captured, what do you have to say?" The fox spirit said, “I was quietly guarding in the mountains when that fox spirit transformed into a woman. My worldly eyes failed to recognize her, and she defiled my vital essence, preventing me from attaining enlightenment. I was furious and had no choice but to raise an army to annihilate her. Unexpectedly, she used magic and defeated me. Fortunately, the True Lord rescued me, otherwise I would have lost my life.” The fox spirit said, “Who taught you to be so lustful? It was a matter of fate, what does it have to do with me?” The Jade Emperor said, “You two spirits deserve to be beheaded. Since the True Lord intervened, and you have cultivated for hundreds of years, I cannot bear to execute you. I will spare your lives for now. However, your worldly desires have not been eradicated, how can you attain enlightenment? You are punished to be reborn in the mortal realm as the Mother of All People. Although you two are enemies today, in the next life you will be sisters and blood relatives, relying on each other until the end of your lives. Then I will come to guide you again. You must not commit evil deeds again, lest you never be able to ascend to higher realms.” "Once the imperial decree was issued, who dared to disobey? The Goddess of Childbirth appeared from the side, took the two spirits, and sent them to the mortal realm for reincarnation outside the South Heavenly Gate. The True Lord's attendance at the Peach Banquet is another story. At this time, Emperor Xiaoyuan of the Great Han Dynasty was on the throne, the dynasty was named Yongguang, the world was at peace, and the people were happy. In Jiangdu, there was a retainer named Feng Dali, a courtier of Wang Silu, who was skilled in playing musical instruments. He had a son named Wanquan, who was intelligent, handsome, and very good-looking. When he was sixteen or seventeen, his father died, and he could only play. He spent his days singing, playing games, kicking a ball..." He was skilled in playing all kinds of instruments, from bamboo to stringed instruments, and had completely squandered his family's traditional craft. He composed and studied music himself, but without any melody, he created mournful tunes for temples, calling them "earthly music," which were still pleasant to listen to, and all who heard them were moved. Zhao Man, the military commander of Jiangdu, learned of him and kept him in his household. He was very fond of him, and he followed him everywhere, ate and slept with him at night. He dressed very extravagantly, and thus became estranged from his wife. One day, when Zhao Man was sleeping with Wan Jin, he said to Wan Jin, "Since you are so devoted to satisfying my desires, what do you think of me marrying you a woman of unparalleled beauty?" Wan Jin replied, "Although a woman may be beautiful and charming, she still requires me to provide for her pleasure. It is better for me to stay by your side, sir, so that I may always enjoy myself. This is my lifelong commitment, so why should I trouble you, sir?" "When Zhao Man got excited, he held Wan Quan tightly and vigorously teased him for a long time. Wan Quan tried his best to please him, but it didn't stop. Zhao Man found great pleasure in his efforts, and from then on, he liked him very much, going in and out of his house without any restraint. Zhao Man's wife was originally the granddaughter of the Prince of Jiangdu, the Princess of Gusu. She was beautiful and voluptuous, no less than Xi Shi, and her licentiousness was on par with that of Empress Wu Zetian. However, Zhao Man doted on Wan Quan and only visited his room once or twice a month, and he didn't fully satisfy his desires. How could this licentious woman bear to be alone in her empty room? She often stood in the wind and moonlight, sighing deeply." Hao Ran. A poem testifies to this: *Huanxi Sha*: "Flower-like and alluring yet gentle, her handsome eyes displaying her charm; she feigns adjusting her jade-like hair, leaning against the emerald screen, delicate yet timid. Her first attempt at glamorous makeup, like fishing through a curtain, still locks away spring sorrow in the high tower." One day, on the Dragon Boat Festival, Zhao Man held a family banquet, drinking with the Princess of Gusu. She had Wan Quan sit at the head of the table, singing, playing the flute, and passing cups. The Princess of Gusu, seeing Wan Quan's graceful figure and melodious voice, longed to hold him in her arms. A short while later, Zhao Man said to Wan Quan, "I am drunk, may you offer the lady a cup." She murmured this as she leaned against the table and fell asleep. Wan Quan poured a large cup, handed it to the Princess of Gusu with both hands, and sang another song. The Princess of Gusu dismissed the maids and said to Wan Quan, "Pour another cup for me." Wan Jin poured another cup and offered it to her. The Princess of Gusu saw Wan Jin holding the gleaming gold cup, which made his slender fingers look like jade shoots, even more endearing. Overcome with lust, she stood up to take the cup from Wan Jin, quickly grasped his hands, and whispered, "How about I drink half a cup, and you drink half?" Wan Jin hurriedly whispered, "Madam, please don't do this. What if Master wakes up and sees us?" The Princess of Gusu said, "You flatter Master to please him, thus stealing my affection. Why don't you flatter me?" Wan Jin said, "Madam's intentions are good, but I have no intention of doing so. I only fear there are many eyes and ears, so I dare not act rashly." The Princess of Gusu said, "When I have time, I will send a maid to call you, but you must not break your promise." Just as Wan Jin was about to speak, Zhao Man called to him in her sleep, "Quickly help me to my room to sleep." The Princess of Gusu laughed, "Look how drunk she is, and she still wants Wan Jin to carry her to her room." Wan Jin blushed and left. The Lady of Gusu summoned a maid to make the bed, drank a few cups of tea, and then undressed to sleep. The maids dispersed, leaving only her personal maid, Cui Tian, about fifteen or sixteen years old. She was clever and quick-witted, and a great help to the Lady of Gusu. In the past, when they needed to do something, Cui Tian was the one who took the lead. Although young, she was very experienced. That day, the Lady of Gusu saw Zhao Man sleeping soundly and couldn't suppress her desire. Suddenly, she thought of Feng Wan Jin: "I made an appointment with him. Perhaps I should come while he's drunk and hasn't woken up yet. Besides, Wan Jin is alone in the study. I'll have Cui Tian quietly call him in for some fun." She then whispered, "Cui Tian." Cui Tian, hearing the call in her sleep, quickly got up and said, "What are your orders, Mistress? I was sleeping when I dreamt of a man clinging to me, and I couldn't break free. I was in great pain. Luckily, Mistress woke me up, and I felt so happy." "The Lady of Gusu asked, 'How am I bothering you?' Cui Tian just kept laughing. The Lady of Gusu said, 'I understand, this is extremely interesting, how could there be so much suffering?' Cui Tian said, 'It's just that I've never tried it before, I don't know if it's bitter or sweet, I'm very afraid.' The Lady of Gusu said, 'Look, the moon shines brightly through the window, it's most beautiful. Master is fast asleep again, his old illness won't end until dawn. I intend to steal your fragrance and jade, if you are willing to help me get married, I will reward you handsomely.' Cui Tian said, 'My lady has something to do, I'll do whatever you ask, how can you talk about rewarding me?' The Lady of Gusu said, 'I see outside, Feng Wanjin has a gentle personality, just like Junrui, and his appearance is no less than Pan An. If I could have a night of pleasure with him, it would fulfill my wish for three lifetimes. I wonder if you would be willing to go and call him here?'" Cui Tian said, “It’s alright if I go and call him, but if he refuses to come, I’ll tell Master tomorrow morning that I came to call her last night, saying that Madam wanted me to have a night of pleasure with her. When Master finds out, not only will Madam be embarrassed, but my life will also be in danger. How can that be?” The Lady of Gusu said, “This girl is indeed quite insightful. I told you the truth, I made an appointment with him while Master was asleep. If you go and call him now, and this matter is settled, I will never forget your kindness.” Cui Tian said, “I see. Don’t worry, Mistress, I’ll go and call him.” "Then she gently opened the door and went downstairs. The Lady of Gusu sat alone by the window, watching the moon, waiting for Wan Jin to arrive. A seven-character quatrain testifies to this: Autumn hooves pierce the golden well railing, a light frost chills the mushrooms; the lonely lamp flickers, thoughts are almost unbearable, I roll up the curtain and gaze at the moon, sighing endlessly. Meanwhile, Cui Tian, holding a gauze lamp, moved lightly, thinking to herself, 'Wan Jin is not only someone I miss, but I, Cui Tian, also think of him. It turns out the Lady has already arranged a meeting with him: Don't miss this opportunity. I'll call him; perhaps he'll arrive first.' It was late at night when she reached the study door and saw a lamp still burning inside. She gently wet a hole in the paper window with her finger, finding Wan Jin sitting alone in his study. He was somewhat pleased by the Lady of Gusu's advances that day, reading a book of erotic literature. When he became engrossed, he saw Cui Tian approaching and asked, half surprised and half questioning, 'What brings you here, Sister Cui Tian?'" "Cui Tian said, 'I've come to bring good news.' Wan Jin asked, 'What good news do I have?' Cui Tian replied, 'The mistress sent me to wake you because the master is drunk and asleep.' Wan Jin said, 'How dare I go?' Cui Tian said, 'What's there to be afraid of with me here?' Wan Jin said, 'If you are so kind to me, sister, I would repay you with my life.' Cui Tian said, 'I don't need to repay you with my life. I just want you to give me some pleasure, that's all. What were you looking at just now? You seemed so happy.' Wan Jin said, 'It was spring.' Cui Tian said, 'What do you mean by spring?' Wan Jin said, 'Women shouldn't look at those.' Cui Tian said, 'Why not look?' The two of them lingered for a while, and Wan Jin deliberately flipped through a few pages. Cui Tian was moved by what she saw, and she grabbed Wan Jin, biting his cheek a couple of times, saying, 'The mistress just said you were very interesting. Now, let me try you out.'" "Wan Jin then unfastened Cui Dian's trousers and thrust his whisk into her. Cui Dian was a virgin, so how did it go in so easily? Firstly, Cui Dian was aroused and had already soaked the whisk; secondly, Wan Jin was burning with desire, so he went in and thrust for a while. Cui Dian was aroused and could no longer resist. Her heart pounded like raindrops on flower petals, and she quickly grabbed him. Wan Jin said, 'Today I'm dying of pleasure.' Wan Jin thrust in and out hundreds more times, and Cui Dian fainted. Wan Jin panicked and put his tongue in Cui Dian's mouth, exhaling a dozen breaths before she woke up and said, 'To die under the peony flower, even as a ghost, is romantic.'" Wan Jin took a handkerchief and wiped Cui Tian's vulva, soaking the handkerchief completely, before helping her up. Cui Tian said, "The mistress sent me to call you, why did you forget? You must go now, don't be late." Wan Jin said, "I've been with you for a while, I'm afraid I'm tired, what should I do?" Cui Tian said, "The younger generation is formidable, I know the future will not be as good as the present." She took the lantern first, Wan Jin closed the door, and they went downstairs together. Cui Tian went upstairs and said to the Lady of Gusu, "Feng Wan Jin has arrived." The Lady of Gusu said, "Why have you been gone for so long? Aren't you worried?""I'm dying!" Cui Tian said, "It's unspeakable suffering. Just now, Master made me sit in the main hall, leaving me nowhere to hide. I only dared to come in after he fell asleep. I was almost scared to death." The Princess of Gusu said, "Quickly, tell him to come up." Cui Tian went downstairs, explained the situation to Wan Jin, and led him upstairs. The Princess of Gusu said, "I've been waiting for you for so long, I was so anxious." Wan Jin said, "I dared not be late because of your summons, Mistress, but good things are often delayed." At this moment, the Princess of Gusu's heart was fluttering, and she could not control herself. She quickly hugged Wan Jin and kissed him several times, saying, "My dear darling; the more I look at you, the more moved I become. I wish I could swallow a bowl of water whole." "Having said that, the two embraced and went to bed. They made love passionately, their desires running wild. When they reached the most blissful moment, the Princess of Gusu held the handle of Wan Jin's whisk in her hands, unwilling to let go. Her vulva was itching and agitated, and she couldn't bear to put it in or take it out. She was like an ant on a hot stone, her hands and feet never stopping. She said to Wan Jin, "My darling, you are such an interesting person, and so beautiful. How can I bear to part with you? I want to marry you, but I can't in this life. I want you by my side, but I'm afraid my master will find out. What should I do?" Wan Jin said, "As long as it's like this often, that's fine." He then thrust more than a hundred times in one go. The Princess of Gusu felt as if she had just received rain after a long drought, and finally felt satisfied. Her juices soaked half the mat. The Princess of Gusu said, "What a charming son-in-law! If I hadn't met you today, you would have failed my lifelong desire." Wan Jin said, "Let me wipe it dry with a handkerchief." After several hundred more thrusts, the Master of Gusu said, "The pleasure is indescribable, but I can't bear it any longer." She gripped the handle of the whisk tightly, grabbed Wan Jin's arms, and shook and thrust wildly for a while. Wan Jin couldn't hold on any longer and ejaculated. The Master of Gusu told Wan Jin to sleep with her on the same pillow. She held the handle of the whisk and told him to stick it to his vulva. Wan Jin said, "It's already past four o'clock, and dawn is approaching. What if I fall asleep and someone finds out?" The Master of Gusu said, "How could I not know? But having enjoyed the pleasures of love with you, and seeing your handsome and charming appearance, how could I bear to leave you?" Wan Jin said, "I also can't bear to leave you, my mistress. But although the Pear Garden is wonderful, it's not a place I can stay long-term. I only hope that you will call me often, my mistress, and I will do my best." "Having said this, they took each other's hands, their affection growing ever stronger. She could only ask Cui Tian to light a lamp and see him off. Cui Tian took the lamp, and the Princess of Suzhou, holding Wan Jin's hand, escorted him downstairs. They kissed several more times, expressing endless tender feelings and the pain of parting. Wan Jin took his leave, and the Princess of Suzhou had no choice but to let go and go upstairs to sleep. A poem testifies to this: 'Southern Country Tune: Moonlight bathes the dressing room, a short candle flickers quietly as it is put away. Raindrops on spring mountains, sorrow unresolved, lingering, I gaze until I see her home before I can rest. The phoenix and the dragon, their love intertwined, tormented by unfulfilled passion. The bugle call fades, the empty tent is filled with longing, oh well, the same sorrow of parting flows westward.' Meanwhile, Cui Tian escorted Wan Jin back to his study and said to him, 'Give me the spring-like flower you just saw.' Wan Jin said, 'You are a member of the inner court, what use is it to you?' Cui Tian said, 'Even if I wanted it, what would it matter to me?'" Wan Jin stubbornly refused, saying, "I'm afraid the master will find out later, and it won't be safe." Cui Tian said, "You won't even give me this 'Spring Breeze,' and you expect me to let you in later!" She then became stubborn and started to walk out. Wan Jin quickly grabbed her, knelt down, and said, "It's not that I don't want to give it, it's just that I'm afraid people will find out. If you want it, sister, please take it." She then opened her book box, picked it out, and gave it to Cui Tian. Cui Tian said, "You're such a good person, but you won't do it. Now I'll take this 'Spring Breeze' to the mistress, and she'll make sure you do everything she can before I let you in." The two played for a while longer, then saw Cui Dian out of the study and went to sleep. No need to go into details. Meanwhile, the Princess of Gusu, lying in bed thinking of Feng Wanjin, couldn't sleep. Tossing and turning, she grew tired and became drowsy. Suddenly, she dreamt of an old woman leading two children, who came to her bedside and said, "Princess of Gusu, you have had intercourse with Feng Wanjin, and you should be pregnant today. I have two children to give you as daughters. They will be given to Feng Wanjin to take in one day, and you will have good things in the future." The Princess of Gusu awoke, realizing it was all a dream. She thought to herself, "This dream is very strange. If it really is true, what should I do? I can't believe it completely." "After another nap, she finished washing and dressing. Zhao Man was still in bed. The Princess of Suzhou approached the bedside and asked a maid to bring her a cup of tea, which she gave to Zhao Man. They chatted for a while. Zhao Man got dressed and got up. After washing and dressing, she went outside to do household chores. In her spare time, she would play with Feng Wanjin. When Wanjin had free time, the Princess of Suzhou would often call him upstairs for amusement. Before she knew it, time had passed quickly, and another month had gone by. Her belly was gradually growing larger, and the Princess of Suzhou was worried all day long, fearing that Zhao Man would find out. Zhao Man was by nature jealous, violent, and extremely shameless. If she did something, her life would be in danger, and she was very worried. She secretly called Cui Dian and said, 'When I first met Wanjin, I dreamed at dawn that a woman was leading two children and said to me, "I give you these two children as your daughters." When I woke up, I didn't believe it.'" "I never imagined my belly would grow so large. If my master found out, our lives would be in danger. What should we do?" Cui Tian said, "Such a strange thing must be dealt with, and it must be done perfectly." After thinking for a while, she said, "I have a plan. My master likes Wan Jin, but he doesn't often come to the mistress's room. Why don't you pretend to be ill and go to Madam Wang's house to recuperate and seek medical treatment? When you get to Madam Wang's house, we can make arrangements. After you give birth, you can have Wan Jin take him back and then return to your mansion. What's wrong with that?" The Princess of Gusu said, "This plan is excellent. I'll rely entirely on you to do it well." Cui Tian said, "I will naturally take full responsibility. Don't worry about it." From then on, the Princess of Gusu pretended to be ill. Zhao Man heard that she was ill and came into the room to see her. Seeing that the Princess of Gusu looked thin and pale, she was greatly alarmed. When the Princess of Gusu saw Zhao Man, she shed tears and said, "I am ill and dare not disturb my husband." Unexpectedly, her condition worsened day by day; what should she do? Zhao Man asked, "What ailment has afflicted you, Madam?" The Princess of Gusu replied, "My abdomen is bloated, I have little appetite, and I feel restless. The many people coming and going in my household only add to my distress. I was just about to inform you, my lord, that I should temporarily return to my parents' home to seek medical treatment, so as not to trouble you." Zhao Man said, "Since you are not feeling well here, it is good for you to return home for treatment. I will have someone send you your travel expenses." The Princess of Gusu was overjoyed to hear this. Zhao Man prepared a sedan chair and horses, and instructed Cui Dian to escort the Princess of Gusu to the Wang family to be well cared for. The Princess of Gusu boarded the sedan chair and returned home, where her entire family came to greet her. Upon entering, her father, Wang Sun, asked, "How have you been these past few days?" The Princess of Gusu replied, "I have been somewhat unwell, which is why I have returned to recuperate." Cui Dian said, "Many people come and go in our household, and Madam is afraid of being disturbed, hence her return. She needs to find a quiet house to rest for a while." I thought that the study in the west courtyard of my wife's house was very elegant, and there were flowers and trees to enjoy, so I came here. Upon hearing this, Wang Sun immediately ordered his servants to clean the west courtyard. That evening, a table of wine was prepared, and his parents and the Princess of Gusu ate and drank together, chatting about everyday matters. The Princess of Gusu pretended not to be hungry, and after dinner, she went to rest in the west courtyard. The west courtyard was indeed very secluded and elegant, with no one else coming or going. Even her father would only visit once every three to five days, and she was accompanied morning and evening only by Cuidian. It was wonderful, like a blissful life. Zhao Man sent someone to check on her, only to find that she was not well, but she kept thinking about it constantly. Then Emperor Xiaoyuan sent Zhao Man to a foreign country to be granted the title of king, and she came to bid farewell to the Princess of Gusu before leaving. Time flew by, and a month had passed, and her belly was even larger. When Feng Wanjin saw that Zhao Man was not at home, he thought of the past affection between the Princess of Gusu. He went to the incense shop and bought several sachets of incense and some fresh fruits, and went to the Wang family to visit. When he arrived at the door, he said to the gatekeeper, "I am a servant of the Zhao family. Master Zhao sent a letter back, requesting to see the mistress." The gatekeeper informed the Lady of Gusu. The Lady of Gusu said, "Let him in to see you." The gatekeeper came out and led Feng Wanjin to the west courtyard. Wanjin was very affectionate towards the Lady of Gusu, and gave her sachets of sachets and fruit. Cuidian said, "You wretch, it's all because you were having fun with the Lady the other day, and now you've made me hide here in loneliness. How could you be so heartless as to never come to visit again?" Wanjin said, "I really didn't know that the Lady was ill and pregnant, so I haven't come to see you often. How could I forget the Lady's kindness? Besides, my husband is at home and dares not come here. I came here today specifically to say that I was able to come by sending a letter. Since you are pregnant, we must find a way." The Lady of Gusu said, "That's exactly what I'm waiting for you to come. After the delivery, you can secretly hide away and raise the child. That way, my love for you will not have been in vain." Wanjin said, "I don't know when the delivery will be. Can I come then?" "The Master of Gusu said, 'Come around the end of the month, and don't forget.' After saying this, Wan Jin took his leave. Once outside the gate, feeling dejected, he hurried to the City God Temple to pray for a divination. He still didn't quite understand. As Wan Jin left the temple, he happened to meet a fortune teller. This fortune teller was no ordinary person; he was actually the Goddess of Childbirth in disguise, there to guide Wan Jin. Upon seeing him, Wan Jin quickly bowed and said, 'Sir, my wife is pregnant, and I don't know when she will give birth. I have come to inquire about the divination.' The fortune teller replied, 'Pray and see what the divination says.' Wan Jin picked up the divination tube, prayed to the sky, and handed it to the fortune teller. The fortune teller tested it, threw down the gold tablet, and obtained a divination result: 'Heavenly Wind,' indicating that she should give birth soon. However, he disliked the presence of the Hooked Chen star, suggesting that she would give birth on the ninth day at the hour of Yin (3-5 AM). Wan Jin paid the divination fee and turned back to think, 'Bringing a child is not a problem, but finding a wet nurse would be best.'" "He was anxious day and night while staying at the mansion, unable to put his mind at ease: it had been six days since the birth of the matriarch, and he had no more plans. Just as he stepped out of the mansion gate, he saw that the matriarch of the world was about to be born, and naturally had an opportunity to meet her. Just then, he bumped into an old woman who said to Wan Jin, 'I've come to help you, Uncle.' Wan Jin asked, 'Whose daughter is she?' The old woman said, 'It's a long story. She's not a daughter, but a widow, very beautiful and clever. She's twenty-one years old now, with no parents or in-laws, and only had a posthumous child who died five or six months ago. She's been crying at home all day, and I saw her alone...'"I repeatedly urged him to remarry to settle his life's affairs, and he agreed. Then I brought up the matter of the uncle. He said he had lived in the Zhao family's house and knew the uncle. If I agreed, we could get married tonight. What do you think? Unexpectedly, this was exactly what Feng Wanjin wanted to find a wet nurse for, so he readily agreed, saying, "Yes, yes, but I haven't found a house yet, what should I do?" The old woman said, "Don't look for a house; she wants to have a child and then find a husband." Wanjin said, "That's even better." He then took out one tael of silver from his sleeve and handed it to the old woman, saying, "Take this to prepare the banquet. I'll go into the room to pack my things and get the betrothal money." That night, the two got married, but I won't go into details. The next day, it was the twenty-eighth. Wanquan said, "I've been thinking about what the teacher said about Suzhou being able to give birth on the twenty-ninth." He then said to his wife, "I have something to say to you, don't blame me." The woman said, "We are husband and wife, everything is up to you, why do you say 'blame me'?" "Wan Jin said, 'I frequented Master Zhao's residence, and my wife and I had an affair. Unexpectedly, I am now ten months pregnant. If Master Zhao finds out, my life will be in danger. The other day, my wife feigned illness at the Wang family's house and saw me, saying, 'After I give birth, you can secretly take me and raise me, so that our time together won't be in vain. If I give birth to a son or daughter, I will raise them with you, and they will be our future.' My wife is pleased with me and often takes good care of me. But how did I manage to bring her out?' The woman said, 'What's so difficult about this? It must be done this way, this way.' Wan Jin was delighted and said, 'This plan is excellent.' How will it unfold? Let's find out in the next volume. End of Volume One of the Interesting History of Zhaoyang."
