【Dreaming Back to the Martial World】Volume 1, Chapter 4

Li Lang bid farewell to Ge Ying, bought some dry food at the nearby market, and then headed out of the market. Ever
since Ge Ying mentioned yesterday that there were many martial arts practitioners near this so-called Little Night Mountain, he had been thinking of returning to
where the plane was parked and moving it as soon as possible.
Along the way, he indeed encountered many martial arts figures carrying swords and knives. They were either in groups or in small groups,
wandering aimlessly on the mountain. Li Lang tried to avoid them as much as possible. After
more than two days, he finally returned to where the plane was parked on the evening of the third day after parting ways with Ge Ying and the others. Fortunately
, it seemed that none of the martial arts practitioners who had come to search for treasure had appeared in the vicinity.
Li Lang sat comfortably in the pilot's seat, holding a roast chicken in his left hand and a small jar of rice wine in his right. He took
a bite of chicken and a sip of rice wine. This homemade rice wine, sold at the market, tasted incredibly sweet. By the time
he finished the roast chicken, the jar of wine was empty.
As the moon rose in the east, Li Lang threw away the chicken bones and empty wine jar, closed the door, and started
the plane's engine.
With the propellers spinning gradually, the plane roared into the night sky. Li Lang ascended
to an altitude of three thousand meters, becoming a small black dot in the moonlight, and then flew southeast.
After flying for over an hour, the alcohol took effect. Before his consciousness became clouded, he quickly descended
, using sonar, radar, and searchlights to find a clearing about the size of two basketball courts in the dense forest. With his
superb skills, he landed the plane there.
Looking at the surrounding towering trees, Li Lang exclaimed that drinking had ruined everything. After resting for a few minutes, he decided to first
observe the surroundings. Holding a flashlight in his left hand and his Desert Eagle in his right, he walked to the edge of the clearing and shone
the flashlight into the woods.
It was just a routine check, and Li Lang didn't think much of it, figuring that with a gun in hand, he
could easily deal with any wolves or leopards he encountered.
After circling the edge of the clearing, Li Lang was about to return to the plane to sleep. A slight sound came from behind him
, clearly the sound of a dry branch snapping underfoot. Though faint, it was still
clearly heard by Li Lang in the quiet night.
A snake, a white snake, a huge white python. Its scales shimmered
delicately in the sunlight.
Li Lang turned alertly, grabbed his flashlight, and shone it towards the source of the sound. He saw a pair of eyes glowing
an eerie red in the flashlight beam. Then a roar erupted, and a gust of wind rushed towards him.
Li Lang was startled; the slight intoxication from the alcohol vanished instantly. He nimbly dodged
to the side, rolled on the ground, shone his flashlight on the attacking creature, and fired
two shots.
The beast, startled again by the flashlight, paused in place. Just then, Li Lang fired, both
bullets hitting the beast squarely.
The beast rolled on the ground, letting out a painful whimper. It turned and darted into the woods,
the sound of its footsteps snapping through the branches filling the air, and in the blink of an eye, it was far away.
Li Lang, meanwhile, was drenched in cold sweat, all the alcohol in his stomach turning to stagnation. He quickly ran back to the plane, feeling parched and
his heart pounding. The fact that the two shots hadn't killed the beast wasn't surprising; what truly startled him was that,
under the flashlight beam, though only for a few seconds, he had seen its true form
clearly.
Its thick hooves, sharp claws, a body slightly larger than a wolfhound covered in scales,
a head resembling a bull's head, a gaping maw filled with fangs, and eyes as large as copper bells—every single feature resembled
the mythical beast he had seen on television, in computer images, and in numerous mythological tales: the Qilin.
"This is terrifying! This is terrifying! I must be dreaming. This dream is so long, I haven't woken up yet after so many days. This
thing... does such a thing really exist in this world? I must be seeing things." Li Lang muttered to himself
.
But he knew he was not seeing things. Then he remembered what Ge Ying had told him: "Half a month
ago, several disciples of the Diancang Sect did encounter a strange beast in the mountains. It is said to be an ancient beast, the Fire Qilin, but it
is not yet an adult."
Good heavens, it must be it, the Fire Qilin. It's not even an adult yet, and even a Desert Eagle can't kill
it. If it were an adult, wouldn't it take missiles to take it down?
In his impulsiveness, Li Lang even had the idea of taking off and relocating immediately. However, after calming down
, he dismissed the idea.
Recalling the information Ge Ying had told him, and the news spread by the famous charlatan "Ma Yi Shen Suan" that
a strange beast and treasure would appear in Xiaoye Mountain, this Fire Qilin must be a strange beast without a doubt. Recalling
the clichéd plots from those online fantasy novels he'd read before, this strange beast must be lurking near the treasure; their treasure-hunting skills are
unmatched by humans.
The appearance of this fire qilin in this area meant the so-called 'treasure' couldn't be far off.
"Fate...fate! Hahaha..." Li Lang couldn't help but laugh triumphantly. He'd dared to drink before taking off
, and then, in his drunken stupor, he'd parked the plane here. There just happened to be a suitable parking spot, and then he
encountered the fire qilin—this series of coincidences was incredibly coincidental.
Thinking about it, his tense nerves relaxed. The effects of the alcohol surged back into his brain, and Li Lang
closed his eyes. He leaned back in his seat and fell asleep.
The next day, the chirping of a flock of birds flying out to forage woke Li Lang. Li Lang glanced at the fuel gauge;
it was already a third full. He ultimately abandoned the idea of moving the plane again. Although there were still batteries
available, they would only be usable once a month after being exposed to the sun, so it was better to keep some fuel on hand.
Li Lang took another dagger and reloaded all four magazines, carrying only a few
bullets. He didn't use any other weapons from the plane. The Desert Eagle alone had already
amazed Ge Ying and Tang Ling; Li Lang couldn't imagine how astonished they would be if they saw him with a pistol tucked into his thigh, a string of grenades on his belt,
a machine gun in his right hand, and a bullet belt in his left. If they saw him with...
When pressed about his origins and sect, he couldn't come up with a fabricated story.
Li Lang dragged out a large net to cover the plane and cut some branches and leaves to conceal it. Just as he was about to take out his compass and
choose a random direction by chance, he noticed something flashing on the ground.
Li Lang walked over, squatted down, picked it up, and saw that it was a dark red scale,
reflecting the sunlight. He figured it must have been shot off by Li Lang during their encounter the previous night.
"Desert Eagle, two shots and only one scale was gone. This defense is insane," Li Lang
remarked, observing the coin-sized scale.
As he turned around, his nerves tightened again. He nervously swallowed, and his right hand quietly slid
to the grip of the Desert Eagle.
A snake, a white snake, a huge white python. Less than ten meters away, its snow-white
scales reflected the sunlight with a delicate shimmer.
Li Lang's hand froze on the grip of the pistol. Having carried out numerous jungle missions, he knew
the terror of this kind of python; its immense constricting force was enough to strangle a robust water buffalo. If he couldn't kill
it with a single shot, at a distance of only ten meters, it could coil around him in two seconds. Looking at its seven- or eight-meter-long body, its
thickest part even exceeding his thigh, Li Lang estimated that once it coiled around him, it would only need another second
to break all his bones.
Li Lang slowed his breathing, afraid of provoking it. But the white snake seemed to have no desire to attack him, merely leisurely
slithering over, stopping less than two meters away, raising its body, and staring at him curiously with its eyes
.
It's looking at me!? It's actually looking at me??
For some reason, when Li Lang's eyes met itss, a strange feeling welled up inside him.
He sensed that this white snake meant him no harm.
Li Lang couldn't help but examine it more closely. Its enormous body should have inspired fear, but
Li Lang felt none of that. Its scales were snow-white and delicate, without a single impurity. Its eyes were like
black gemstones, their gaze as pure as a baby's.
When Li Lang saw its head clearly, his gaze narrowed again. Behind the white snake's head, there were two thumb-
sized protrusions, like two small horns.
A white snake with horns!? Wasn't that about to turn into a dragon? Li Lang asked dreamily, "You… are you a snake
or a dragon?"
He couldn't help but take a step closer. The white snake seemed startled by him, turning its body and slithering into
the forest, disappearing without a trace.
A strange beast! Definitely another strange beast. Realizing this, Li Lang was immediately excited. There must be some so-called
rare treasure nearby, otherwise it wouldn't have attracted the Fire Qilin and this seemingly intelligent white snake.
With the thought that if one didn't take what Heaven offered, one would be punished by Heaven, Li Lang drew his Desert Eagle and followed the tracks of the grass trampled by the white snake
, the broken branches, and the imprints on the ground. At this moment, his special forces skills were on
full display.
From dawn until noon, Li Lang stopped by a stream. On the opposite bank of the narrow stream appeared
a barren hill, its surface jagged with rocks. On the hillside, a dark cave, taller than a person,
came into view.
Judging from the marks left on the damp mud along the stream banks, Li Lang determined that the white snake had entered the cave.
He couldn't afford to fail at the last hurdle. That white snake seemed so intelligent; the treasure that attracted it must be
something extraordinary. He had to go see it. If he didn't need it, he'd generously give it to it, considering it a feast for the eyes.
Li Lang thought to himself, peeling off a piece of compressed biscuit and putting it in his mouth, then scooping up some stream water to drink and replenish his strength. Reaching the cave entrance, Li Lang discovered not only the white snake's tracks but also clear claw marks. They were clearly left
by some kind of four-legged animal . It must be the fire qilin. These strange beasts' treasure-hunting abilities were unmatched by humans. Li Lang held a flashlight in his left hand and a pistol in his right, cautiously entering the cave. The cave was winding and twisting, and Li Lang marked the spots as he advanced for more than ten minutes. He estimated that he had entered the underground mountain's interior, never expecting that what appeared to be a low, rocky mountain from the outside would contain such a vast space. At this moment, several roars echoed. Li Lang's spirits lifted: "Almost there." He turned the flashlight to its lowest setting, tiptoed, and proceeded. Unexpectedly, after turning two corners, a bright light appeared ahead. Inside was a space the size of a basketball court, with stone pillars growing on the ground and stalagmites hanging from the ceiling. These numerous stone pillars and stalagmites constantly emitted fluorescence, illuminating the cave with a dreamlike atmosphere. The fire unicorn, the size of a wolfhound, was roaring incessantly, poised to pounce. The white snake coiled into a snake formation, blocking its path. Using the fluorescent light, Li Lang discovered that behind the white snake was a smooth stone platform. Several stalagmites hung from the cave ceiling, occasionally dripping a drop of stalactite that collected in a small pool in the center of the platform. A peculiar plant grew in this pool. Its branches, only about a foot tall, were entirely purple. The top split into two forks, each bearing three emerald green leaves. Between each leaf grew a white fruit, no bigger than a longan. The entire plant emitted a misty aura under the fluorescent light. The fire qilin's target was these two fruits, repeatedly attempting to pounce on the stone, but was always thwarted by the white snake. The white snake stared intently at the fire qilin, and whenever the fire qilin made a move, it would raise its long tail and lash down with the force of a whip , sending stalactite fragments flying. Repeatedly thwarted, the fire qilin became increasingly ferocious. It pounced again, but as the white snake lashed out with its long tail , it swiftly landed on the ground, bounced off the tail, and then grabbed it with a claw. Scales instantly fell off, and snake blood splattered. The white snake hissed in pain, raised its head, and rammed it into the fire qilin. Unexpectedly, the fire qilin rolled on the ground, then leaped up again, adding another claw to the white snake's body. It tore off a clump of scales, leaving several bloody welts. The white snake, caught off guard, suffered repeated blows. This also ignited its ferocity; as the fire qilin pounced again to tear at it…

The white snake nimbly dodged, opened its massive jaws, bit into the Qilin's back, swung it around a few times, and hurled it violently, smashing several
stone pillars in the process. Li Lang watched the creatures leap and dart about, seemingly achieving their goals. However, he wasn't optimistic about the white snake's chances. The Qilin's scales were so sturdy that even bullets couldn't penetrate them, and judging by its current ferocity, even bullets probably hadn't harmed it. Therefore, the white snake's bite and throw were likely both ineffective. Sure enough, the Qilin got up, shook off the dust, and roared as it pounced on the white snake, tearing at it. The white snake, being larger and needing to protect the medicinal herb, was somewhat hesitant. After a while, the white snake sustained several more scratches. Having succeeded once, the Qilin seemed to have changed its target. It was determined to kill the white snake first before devouring the fruit. The white snake, having been scratched several times, tried to entangle the Qilin with a predator-strangling technique. Unexpectedly, the fire qilin seemed to know that once entangled by the white snake, it would surely die. It merely used its agility to leap and dart among the stone pillars, occasionally taking a chance to strike the white snake. Li Lang watched anxiously, his emotions leaning towards the white snake. The fire qilin pounced on him the moment they met, while the white snake remained friendly, facing him directly. The two beasts fought for a long time, the white snake's wounds multiplying. The fire qilin was also struck several times by the white snake's tail, staggering as it walked. However, overall, the fire qilin had gained a clear advantage. The white snake reluctantly coiled up its snake formation again, still determined to fight to the death. The fire qilin was enraged, roaring several times before attacking again . Unexpectedly, this time the white snake neither bit the sky nor lashed out with its tail; instead, seeing the fire qilin's attack, it opened its mouth and spewed out a cloud of white mist. The fire qilin, unable to dodge in time, was struck squarely by the white snake's breath. Its hooves buckled, and it staggered back several steps, coughing incessantly. The remaining white mist landed on the ground, instantly freezing it as if a layer of frost had formed. Moss sprouted from the base of some stone pillars, turning withered and scorched upon contact with the mist. The white snake, having exhaled its poisonous mist, seemed much weaker. However, the fire qilin, after only a few coughs , was completely unharmed, letting out a few triumphant roars, seemingly mocking the white snake. A trace of sadness flashed in the white snake's eyes, yet it still refused to yield, stubbornly raising its tongue and flicking its forked tongue in front of the stone platform. The fire qilin let out a ferocious roar, preparing to pounce and kill the white snake. Suddenly, a loud explosion struck, sending the fire qilin reeling and letting out a painful roar. "Damn it... killing is just a matter of beheading. You've already defeated it, you could have just picked some fruit and left, but you still wanted to kill me. I couldn't stand it anymore, damn it, it even tried to bite me last night." Li Lang walked out, guns in both hands, cursing. The Fire Qilin and the White Snake had both seen him before, but their reactions were different. The White Snake, being intelligent, shook its head and wagged its tail, appearing quite pleased to see him attack the Fire Qilin. The Fire Qilin, however, remembered the gunshot wound from the previous night and immediately became alert, growling softly at him. Li Lang, guns in hand, carefully walked over and stood not far from the White Snake, facing the Fire Qilin together with her. Seeing someone suddenly appear out of nowhere, the Fire Qilin angrily pounced on Li Lang. Unexpectedly, another loud bang rang out, and a bullet struck its back. It cried out in pain and hurriedly hid behind a stone pillar, roaring at Li Lang incessantly. After a stalemate, the Fire Qilin finally couldn't hold back any longer. It lunged out again, but Li Lang, already intent on killing it, fired both guns in quick succession as it charged, bullets scattering sparks as they hit the creature. The fire qilin cried out in pain, finally turning and abandoning the white snake and the elixir, darting out of the cave. Li Lang breathed a sigh of relief as the fire qilin fled. He had fired a burst of bullets when it lunged, emptying both magazines. Had the fire qilin endured the pain and charged, its gaping maw would likely have devoured half his head in one bite. He sat down heavily and looked at the white snake. The white snake was looking at him gratefully and couldn't help but ask, "Are you alright?" He chuckled to himself after asking; even with its intelligence, the white snake couldn't possibly understand him. Unexpectedly, the white snake nodded its massive head. "You can understand me?" Li Lang was astonished. The white snake nodded again. Li Lang chuckled, "Wow, you can actually hear me! Then tell me, are you a dragon or a snake?" The white snake shook its head and tail, making Li Lang laugh heartily. He ejected the magazine, took out the bullets, loaded them, and mounted the gun again. He stood up and asked the white snake, "Did you find that fruit?" The white snake nodded again. Li Lang jokingly asked, "Could you share one with me?" Unexpectedly, this time the white snake didn't move. Li Lang couldn't help but laugh, "Stingy! I saved your life, and you won't even share a fruit." A look of terror suddenly appeared in the white snake's eyes. Li Lang also sensed a noise behind him. He immediately turned around and saw the fire qilin that had just escaped rushing towards him with a gust of evil wind, its foul-smelling, blood-red maw already close at hand. Li Lang immediately shouted, "You beast!" Seeing the qilin's mouth already in front of him, in desperation, he could only raise his left arm to block it. The fire-breathing qilin bit his left arm, simultaneously knocking him down and clawing wildly at his chest. Li Lang felt a piercing pain in his left arm, but fortunately, his nano-bulletproof vest was incredibly tough, and the qilin's sharp teeth couldn't penetrate it. However, the powerful bite caused him excruciating pain. "I'll fuck your mother..." Li Lang struggled to put the gun barrel in his right hand into the qilin's mouth and pulled the trigger with a series of 'bang bang bang' shots. The qilin was struck dumb, immediately releasing Li Lang and writhing on the ground in agony. Although its scales were hard, Li Lang had fired inside its mouth, turning its insides into a bloody mess. The white snake seized the opportunity to dart over, coiling around the qilin and tightening its grip. A series of cracking sounds followed, and black blood flowed from the qilin's seven orifices from the parts of its head that weren't completely freed from the coils. The white snake strangled the fire qilin, then swam to Li Lang's side and affectionately nuzzled him with its head. Li Lang was angry.

He said weakly, "Don't touch me, it pounced on me so hard my internal organs almost burst." A mouthful of blood
gushed from his mouth.
"Damn it, doing good deeds gets you struck by lightning! If it weren't for this garment, my hand would have been bitten off. If it weren't for this garment
, it would have ripped my intestines out." Li Lang lay there for a while before using his right hand to prop himself up and sit up.
Just then, the white snake swam to the stone platform, opened its mouth, and bit off two ginkgo nuts. It swam back to Li Lang, put
the two nuts down, then used its tongue to swallow one of the nuts, pushing the remaining one towards him.
"Are you really going to share one with me?" Li Lang asked.
The white snake nodded and pushed the nut further towards him. Li Lang picked up the nut, and a delicate fragrance filled his nostrils.
He couldn't see anything unusual about the small nut, but seeing the white snake and the fire qilin risk their lives for it, with the fire qilin even losing
its life, he figured it was no ordinary nut.
He asked the white snake, somewhat incredulously, "Really giving it to me? Don't regret it if I eat it."
The white snake nodded its head up and down, then coiled itself on the ground. Li Lang put the fruit in his mouth, gently biting down
to break the skin. He felt a sweet, cool current flow from his throat into his stomach.
The feeling of internal injury from the fire qilin's attack vanished instantly, and even the pain in his bitten left arm lessened considerably.
"Amazing... what is this? It's comparable to a magic pill... sigh..."
Before Li Lang could finish his exclamation, he slumped to the ground, feeling dizzy.
****************************
He slept incredibly soundly. When Li Lang woke up and looked at his watch, it was already evening. The white snake was still coiled to the side
, while the fire qilin's corpse lay stiffly on the ground.
Li Lang felt a slight pain in his left arm. Looking at the corpse of the fire qilin, a surge of malice rose within him:
"Damn it, there aren't many beasts as cunning as you. You even managed a surprise attack. If I hadn't been lucky,
you would have gnawed my head off."
Enraged, he drew his dagger, intending to skin it. Li Lang lifted the fire qilin's corpse,
examining the best spot to make the cut. He noticed that the scales from its throat to its tail
grew outwards, and with renewed enthusiasm, he plunged the dagger in.
The dagger was incredibly sharp, and since the fire qilin was dead, its skin was no longer taut. Li Lang easily peeled off the skin
. At this moment, the white snake awoke. Seeing Li Lang skinning the fire qilin, it swam over and
watched quietly.
Li Lang turned to the white snake and said, "I'll roast it later, and we'll share it."
The white snake seemed uninterested in eating qilin meat and didn't nod in response. After skinning the Fire Qilin, Li Lang discovered
a red glow emanating from its bloodied abdomen. Curious, he removed its intestines and found a bead.
The bead, no bigger than a fingertip, shimmered with a strange red light and felt soft to the touch, like
a cod liver oil capsule. Li Lang brought it to his nose and smelled it; it didn't have a strong bloody odor, but rather a pleasant, slightly fishy
aroma.
He handed the bead to the white snake, saying, "Hey...brother, I ate one of your fruits earlier, so here
's another one for you."
The white snake, which had been lazily lying on the ground, reacted with
extreme fright when Li Lang offered it the bead. Its scales stood on end, and it darted away rapidly.
Li Lang watched the snake flee with a strange expression and chuckled, "You're not afraid of the living, so
what are you afraid of when it's dead? Fine, I'll eat it myself..."
He then popped the bead into his mouth, having already guessed what it was. It was probably the inner core of the Fire Qilin
. He had originally intended to give it to the White Snake to repay the favor of the fruit it had given him. However, the White Snake
had fled as if it had seen a ghost, so he ate it himself, completely ignoring the White Snake's terrified reaction.
He soon realized why the White Snake had run away.
The moment he swallowed the Fire Qilin's inner core, his stomach felt like it was on fire, burning with pain. Then, a cold current surged through him, as if trying to freeze his stomach
to suppress the heat of the Fire Qilin's inner core.
This sudden change in temperature made Li Lang pale, and veins bulged on his forehead. "Damn it, indigestion ..." Li Lang muttered to himself, but then even more intense pain struck .
He endured it for a while, then everything went black, and he fainted from the pain . The White Snake, seeing Li Lang swallow the Fire Qilin's inner core, immediately became agitated. The snake circled the unconscious Li Lang repeatedly , and finally, as if making a decision, bit down on Li Lang's wrist, its two sharp fangs piercing his skin. (To be continued)
