[Hua Erniang]

In Huating County, Songjiang Prefecture, there lived a man named Hua Lin who loved wine but not women. He had married a beautiful wife,

yet remained indifferent and spent his time wandering the local taverns.
After some time, he befriended a dissolute bachelor in the neighborhood named Li Erbai, about

thirty years old, who was a compulsive gambler and drinker. He would seduce other men's sons and trick them into spending money.
Hua Lin, again deceived, secretly stole his wife's clothes and accessories to spend. His parents-in-law, upon discovering this,

were furious and fell ill, both bedridden.
Their good wife served them day and night without complaint. They asked neighbors to find a doctor and tried medicine, but to no avail; they

soon died.
Hua Lin, still unrepentant, went to demand his wife's clothes again. When he refused, he repeatedly became drunk and violent,

frightening his wife and children half to death.
Now, Li Erbai, seeing that Hua Lin's belongings were gone, was quite disheartened. He then sought out a scholar named Ren Long.

The three of them were of one mind, and instead of studying classical Chinese, they spent their days thinking of food and drink.
Li Erbai then came up with an idea: "Although we are not of the same surname and are not blood relatives, we must help each other in times of trouble. We should become sworn brothers

so that we can work together wholeheartedly. I am the eldest, so I will be the eldest brother. Hua Lin will be the second, and Ren Long the third. What do you two think?"
