[The History of Spring Lantern Riddles] (Part 1)

The poem reads: A common saying goes: Lust is the root of all evil, corrupting the Three Cardinal Guides and the Five Constant Virtues.

If not for divine intervention, even life itself would be difficult to preserve.

However, this story of a spring lantern riddle tells of a man whose spouse, in life, upheld the Three Cardinal Guides and the Five Constant Virtues, climbing over the east wall to embrace a virgin.

Truly he gained a wife through this embrace, and through the water, they formed a red thread, without harming the elegance of the Guanju painting. Though it was an occasional act of lust,

it is a scene from ancient times to the present, a blissful and romantic affair!

Chapter One: The Playboy Plays with the Moon at Night, the Pretty Girl Watches the Lanterns at Fifteen. It is said that during the reign of Emperor Xuanzong of Tang, in Renhe County, Hangzhou Prefecture, Zhejiang Province,

there lived a man named Jin Hua, styled Shengli. His father passed away when he was nine, and he was raised by his mother, Yan, until he was

sixteen. Fortunately, his family was quite wealthy, and he was handsome, with clear eyebrows, red lips, white

teeth , and a charming and elegant demeanor.

Seeing her son's intelligence and wit, Madam Yan was overjoyed, cherishing him like a precious jewel. She sent

him to school at the age of seven. This Jin Hua was truly intelligent; from seven to sixteen, he studied extensively, mastering all schools of thought and various philosophical traditions, and

excelling in poetry and prose. He was truly a man of exceptional talent and good looks.

As the poem "West River Moon" testifies: "Born with red lips and white teeth, naturally handsome with bright eyes and clear brows, his charm needs no new clothes, his good looks are

unparalleled.

He can write a thousand words in an instant, his brushstrokes astonish all who see him; Jin Hua's reputation is excellent, everyone respects him at first sight.

" Now, Jin Hua was sixteen and still unmarried. Madam Yan regularly sent matchmakers to select beautiful women

to marry her son, because her son was a womanizer, and would not agree to marry any woman who had even the slightest flaw

. So, after visiting many men, all of whom were of average talent, she still couldn't find a beautiful woman.

Because the search was tedious and she couldn't find a suitable match, Madam Yan put the matter aside. But let's leave that aside for now.

Meanwhile, those families with adopted daughters, who wouldn't want to find a good husband for their daughters? Hearing that Jin Hua's mother wanted to

arrange a marriage for her son, those with daughters knew of Jin Hua's outstanding talent and, regardless of the dowry, were willing to pay a dowry to marry him.

As long as their daughters had even a little bit of beauty, they would go to great lengths to find a matchmaker who praised them as having the looks of Xi Shi and the talent of Wang Zhaojun.

They also inquired about Madam Yan's background and repeatedly refused, so those people didn't insist too much.

This Jin Hua, though young, was a libertine, like a hungry wolf in heat. When his mother

arranged a marriage ... All day long, he didn't read a book, his mind was in turmoil, hesitant and indecisive, half-drunk and half-dazed,

as if he were in a trance, almost like he was ill. His longing for beautiful women was intense, and this was true of every single time. Now

, let's turn to another story. In Jinhua's left neighbor lived a man named Han Yin, who in his youth traveled to Huguang to sell grain. Later, his family became wealthy,

and he opened two pawnshops, entrusting six employees to manage them. He himself only enjoyed his life at home. His wife, Liu, had only one daughter,

nicknamed Jiao Niang, who was thirteen years old this year. She possessed a beauty that could make fish sink and geese fall from the sky, a face that could shame the moon and flowers.

Moreover, she was skilled in embroidery, exceptionally beautiful, a truly lovely girl. How can one describe her? As the poem "West River Moon" testifies: Her face was like

a peach blossom with dew, her body like a ball of white snow, her eyes like autumn waves, her eyebrows clear and bright. Her ten fingers were slender like bamboo shoots.

Her graceful figure rivals that of Xi Shi, her charm surpasses even Cui Ying; her delicate shoes are light and airy, her every movement exuding elegance.

Han Yin's daughter is of striking beauty, and he refuses to marry her to an ordinary man, insisting on a learned gentleman. This is

Han Yin's true intention. Because his daughter is still young and cherished, and he has no son, he refuses to marry her off prematurely. Even

when the Jin family's own matchmaker tried to arrange a marriage, Han Yin, ultimately spoiled, hesitated, his words betraying his true feelings. He remained indecisive, unsure of his decision. If the matchmaker pressed him further, he would scold and curse, then hastily leave, leaving the matchmaker humiliated. No one dared to insist again. Mrs. Liu often said to Han Yin, "Young Master Jin next door is a learned gentleman, with an elegant appearance. Our daughter is beautiful and charming, a perfect match. Why have you refused him despite the matchmakers' repeated requests? " Han Yin replied, "It's not that I refuse, but in my opinion, Young Master Jin and our daughter are a match made in heaven. However, there's one thing. Do you know it , my dear wife?" Mrs. Liu said, "What is that one thing? I truly don't know. Please tell me, my husband." Han Yin said, "Although our family has ample food and clothing and plenty of money, we are both over fifty and have no children . Who can we entrust with managing this wealth ?" Before he could finish speaking, Han Yin burst into tears. Liu, hearing this, said sadly, "This foolish wife has long foreseen this. Although I always force myself to be cheerful and compete with my husband for fame and fortune, I only do so to appease him. But when the Qingming , I see people adding soil and burning paper money at the graves of men and women, rich and poor, but not at ours. I don't know how many tears they shed." With that, Han Yin suddenly burst into tears, and Liu also wailed uncontrollably. Meanwhile, Han Yin's maid, Lan'er, was admiring the plum blossoms blooming beautifully downstairs when she suddenly heard loud, mournful cries from upstairs. She guessed it was the mistress of the wealthy man's wife. Hastily, she ran to the back building and said to Jiao Niang, "This humble servant was watching from downstairs in the front building just now, and I wondered why Master and Madam were weeping so bitterly . " Hearing this, Jiao Niang quickly moved her jade- like steps and golden lotus feet to the front building, where she saw her parents still weeping. Jiao Niang stepped forward, tears welling in her eyes, and asked, "Father and Mother, what is troubling you so much?" The couple stopped crying when they saw their daughter before them and rested for a while. Jiao Niang then slowly asked, "Father and Mother, please tell me your troubles, perhaps I can share your burdens ease your sorrows." Han Yin said, "You are too young to understand such matters. Even if your parents told you, it would be in vain . How could you possibly share your burdens or ease your sorrows?" Liu Shi embraced her and said, "Since you want to ask, I will tell you. It's alright. " Urged repeatedly by Liu's mother, Han Yin finally said through tears, "My child, your parents are have few children. Although we have plenty of gold and silver, enough to live comfortably for the rest of our lives, better than most, you are still a woman. If we wait another year or two until you marry, your parents will be left alone and destitute. It will break our hearts. But that's a small matter. What will happen after we die ? Who will manage our property? Who will burn paper money for our graves during Qingming Festival?" Hearing this, tears streamed down his face again. Liu's mother, hearing this, had an idea and comforted him, "I thought you had something important on your mind, but it's nothing. It's not difficult at all." Han Yin said, "Tell your parents how easy it is."

The young woman said, "I fear my parents will laugh at my shamelessness if I speak my mind."

Han Yin replied, "My daughter is truly devoted to her parents; how could they laugh at you?"

The young woman said, "With your beauty and your family's wealth, I should choose a handsome young man to marry into our family. Then I

will have someone to rely on for the rest of my life, and my parents will have someone to depend on for the future. If I give birth to a son or daughter, it will be a pillar of the Han family, and then our family property will

be managed by someone. I have such a humble opinion; what do you think, Father and Mother?"

Upon hearing this, Han Yin and his wife's worried expressions vanished, replaced by joy. They said together, "We know our daughter is young

, yet she has such a wise idea. She is truly a woman of great courage! If we do this, we will be happy in life and content in death."

The maidservant beside them laughed joyfully, "Excellent! Excellent!

" The young woman blushed with embarrassment and remained silent for a long time. Han Yin asked his maid to fetch a pot of fish and medicinal wine from the kitchen.

They enjoyed the delicious food and drinks, and everyone drank happily from the first watch of the night until the second watch of the night before they were satisfied. The maid then went

to sleep in the back building with the young woman.

Meanwhile, Han Yin and his wife, seeing their daughter return home, secretly discussed, "Since our daughter is so filial, we must carefully

search for a suitable son-in-law."

Liu said, "Why don't we send a matchmaker to secretly tell Jin Hua's mother the reason for our marriage?

If , it would be a great blessing for us.

" Han Yin said, "Young Master Jin is an ambitious man, and Madam Yan is a virtuous woman

. How could she possibly agree to marry into our family?"

Liu said, "As the saying goes, a marriage is destined, and even a stick can't break it. Madam Yan has arranged marriages for her son with thirty or fifty

men , but none of them were a good match. Perhaps our daughter has a predestined connection from a past life."

The old couple chatted and laughed until after dawn before finally falling asleep.

Now, Jinhua, having repeatedly failed to find a suitable spouse, was often troubled. It was the Lunar New Year, a time of bright

sunshine and clear skies, the moon shining brightly as if it were daytime. Hearing the sounds of drums and music

and the clamor of people in the streets, he dressed in fine clothes and came out of his house, inviting a classmate's friend

, Cui Dong, who was two years older than Jinhua. Cui Dong was honest and kind, and Jinhua and Cui Dong were very close, so Jinhua

readily agreed to the invitation.

Jinhua wanted to relax and also wanted to see some beautiful women. The two strolled leisurely. They saw

men and women dressed in bright colors, some ugly, some beautiful. Jinhua was already feeling a little envious

.

Cui Dong, being an honest man, showed no interest in the woman, who was as beautiful as a fairy. He

walked ahead with his head down, while Jinhua followed behind.

As he walked, he heard a woman's voice, sweet and melodious, coming from about five or seven steps behind him. He was

a lustful man, and upon hearing such beautiful music, he immediately knew that a woman of extraordinary beauty must be there. He quickly turned around and saw

an old woman, a maid, and a beautiful young woman, about fifteen or sixteen years old.

Jin Hua slowed his pace, twisting his head and glancing sideways, secretly observing her. He saw that the woman's hair was styled in a clever updo, her

temples adorned with emerald green, her face as white as snow, her cheeks rosy, her eyebrows delicate, her eyes almond-shaped, her ears rounded, her lips cherry-red, her teeth like jade, her lotus feet

small and narrow . Her movements were graceful and her voice sweet and melodious. Jin Hua was not seeing a mortal

, but a fairy. The woman, however, acted strangely; seeing him being looked at, she was not ashamed, but instead acted with great affection,

her eyes constantly darting back and forth.

This captivated Jin Hua, leaving him bewildered and mesmerized, his soul seemingly scattered to the heavens, as if in a dream.

At first, he was only two or three steps away from the woman, but when he saw her playful expression, he froze,

forgetting to move. The woman passed him for a long time, and he remained standing there, still in a daze.

Meanwhile, Cui Dong was walking and laughing with Jin Hua. After a while, seeing no word from Jin Hua, he looked up but couldn't see him. Instead,

he saw an old woman and a maid accompanying a beautiful woman walking past. Looking back, about ten

steps away, Jin Hua stood alone. Cui Dong called out loudly, "Brother Jin Hua, who are you waiting for?"

Jin Hua, still half-asleep, heard his name called and snapped out of his daze, realizing he had been bewitched. He hurriedly ran

a few steps to rejoin Cui Dong.

What happened next remains to be seen; let's find out in the next chapter.
