[The History of Spring Lantern Riddles] (Chapter 9)

Chapter Nine: Two Families Agree to a Happy Marriage, Jinlang Possesses Two Wives. It is said that Han Shi and Jun'e, along with the old woman, arrived at Han Yin's house and

offered birthday greetings to Liu Shi. Everyone inquired about each other's well-being.

There were no outside guests that day, only the family members at home. They ate longevity noodles

in the early morning At noon, they prepared two more lavish banquets.

After everyone had eaten, the sun was already setting. They strolled leisurely in the back garden, admiring the flowers. Jun'e,

her beautiful maid and her maidservants remained asleep in the back building.

Liu Shi and Han Shi slept in the front building, the old women slept in the kitchen, and Han Yin slept alone in the west building. What

they not be mentioned here.

Meanwhile, Jun'e, her beautiful maidservants, and her maidservants went upstairs and reminisced for a while about their past with Jinhua.

Jun'e said to Jiao Niang, "Sister, what we did before was not good."

Jiao Niang asked, "What was wrong with it?"

The maidservant beside her chimed in, "Nothing was leaked, how can you say it was bad?"

Jun'e asked, "How was it bad?"

She then said to Jiao Niang, "I don't know how you are, sister, but look, I'm pregnant."

Jiao Niang said, "Sister, you're just lying."

Jun'e said, "If you don't believe me, let me take off my clothes and you'll see."

With that, she took off her undershirt and loosened her belt, revealing a large belly, resembling

a large watermelon.

Jiao Niang looked at her in surprise and said, "That's strange indeed."

Jun'e, being clever, stared at Jiao Niang for a long time, noticing that Jiao Niang's body was larger than before, and she became

very suspicious.

Then she asked Jiao Niang, "Your body feels like you're pregnant."

Jiao Niang laughed, "My body is even thicker than yours, sister."

Jun'e said, "Why don't you take off your clothes so I can see?"

Jiao Niang indeed took off her top and loosened her belt. Jun'e looked and saw that it was

half . The two sisters stared at each other in shock for a long time, their tongues lolling out in disbelief.

A maidservant beside them asked, "What should we do?"

Jiao Niang said, "You little girl, you have such a clean body, so neat and tidy. How come this helpless situation has fallen

on us two sisters?"

They hesitated for half the night before finally going to sleep.

Meanwhile, Han Shi and Liu Shi slept until the third watch of the night. In their dream, Han and Liu suddenly saw an old man standing on the bed. They

looked closely at him in their dream and found him quite strange, unlike any ordinary person. He

had disheveled white hair, suggesting he was about seventy or eighty years old, yet possessed a youthful face, appearing no more than seventeen or eighteen. His two dark pupils were deep-

set , and three long white beards

hung down to his abdomen. His brow ridges were high and prominent, his fingernails were curved and twisted, and his large earlobes reached his shoulders. Two long eyebrows formed hairlines, and a tattered square scarf covered his head. He wore black boots and smoked two cigarettes. His legs

moved like those of a scholar from the East, and he descended with an air of nonchalance, like the Old Man of the South Pole.

After observing the old man's appearance, Han and Liu looked at his hands. They saw that he held

a marriage decree, nodding repeatedly, and leaned on a long cane.

Then, with a grin, he said, "Your daughters and the son of the widow Jin next door were destined in their past lives. In this life,

the three of are husband and wife, which will not harm their reputations."

Having said this, the old man ascended into the air and disappeared. Han and Liu hurriedly woke up. Han said, "Sister-in-law, wake up."

Liu asked, "What did you say, sister?

" Han then recounted the events of her dream.

Liu said, "What happened in my dream matches exactly what you said, young lady. It's quite suspicious."

Han said, "Let's discuss this matter tomorrow and see what those two girls do."

The two sisters-in-law continued their conversation, but Han Yin, having had the same dream after waking up at midnight, couldn't sleep until the next day.

This too is not mentioned.

Meanwhile, Jin Hua's mother, Madam Yan, was fast asleep when she suddenly saw an old man say, "Your son is destined to have two wives; he

has already married Han Yin's daughter and niece."

Having said this, the old man leaned on his cane and left. Madam Yan quickly woke up, thinking, "This is truly bizarre. My son, Jin Hua, is

a sincere person; how could he do such a disrespectful thing?"

She pondered this until dawn. Liu Shui dressed early and went to the back study to wake Jin Hua. Jin Hua

hurriedly dressed and opened the door.

Madam Yan angrily went into the room and sat down, then recounted her dream in detail.

Jin Hua, upon hearing this, trembled with fear and feigned hesitation, saying, "This is not true. How could I, your son, dare

to do such a rude thing?"

Madam Yan also thought that who knew if the dream was true or false? If it hadn't happened, wouldn't that be unfair to her son

? Seeing Jin Hua's words, she didn't pursue the matter further.

But let's leave that aside for now. The next morning, Madam Han and Madam Liu got up early and, after washing and dressing, Han Yin came out of the west tower and went up to the front tower,

sitting silently in a chair.

Madam Liu asked, "Why does husband look so worried?"

Han Yin anxiously replied, "How would you know?

" Seeing his anxiety, Madam Liu suspected he had something on his mind and didn't ask further.

Seeing her brother's unhappiness and anxiety, Madam Han simply let it go. Han Yin sat for a while, then, seeing his sister there, realized

it wasn't appropriate to discuss his dream with Madam Liu.

Han Yin then got up and went downstairs, pacing hesitantly around the courtyard. His mind was filled with a thousand conflicting thoughts;

walking felt awkward, standing felt awkward too. His heart tightened like a raging fire, and he was extremely unhappy.

Finally called out to Liu Shi.

Liu Shi quickly answered and went downstairs to Han Yin. Liu Shi said, "What brings you here, my husband?"

Han Yin said, "Let's go to the west tower, and I'll tell you everything in detail."

The couple went up to the west tower together and sat down. Han Yin rested for a while, then recounted the words from his dream

in .

Liu Shi clapped her hands and said, "How amazing! How amazing!

" Liu Shi also recounted the words from Han Yin's dream. Han Yin listened and was truly astonished;

how could the three of them have the same dream?

Liu called out to Han again. Liu went to the west building and sat down. The three of them stood there for a long time, recounting the words from their dream

. Each of them spoke with perfect clarity.

Liu said, "This matter can be verified. Let's, sisters, see if these two girls are truly pregnant."

Han already knew her daughter was pregnant, but hadn't paid attention to Jiao Niang, so she readily

agreed , "That's fine.

" The two went downstairs to the back building, where they saw Jun'e and Jiao Niang sitting there blankly, their faces filled

with worry, their hands supporting their chins, sighing repeatedly. Upon seeing their mother, they both stood up.

Liu was a careless person, usually oblivious to such things. But now, looking closely at Jiao Niang, she noticed that

Jiao Niang 's belly was as large as a watermelon, her lips were no longer as rosy,

and she was panting slightly, causing her great anxiety. Looking at Jun'e, she saw a similar condition.

Han Yin already understood her daughter's situation. Looking more closely at Jiao Niang, she felt she resembled Jun'e even more. Han and

Liu were both shocked and speechless for a long time.

Jun'e and Jiao Niang were called for a while before finally waking up. A maid whispered beside them, "Miss,

something has happened. The promise

has come true." Jun'e and Jiao Niang had already guessed what was going on, and secretly waved to the maid. The maid understood and said

nothing more .

Han and Liu, having been awake for a while, recounted their dream and asked Jun'e and Jiao Niang

about the reason . Jun'e and Jiao Niang, knowing they couldn't deny it,

recounted from beginning to end the events of watching the lanterns on the fifteenth of the first lunar month and Jun'e's birthday celebration and their overnight stay on the sixteenth. They also recounted their vows and the mark left in Jinhua.

Liu and Han listened, their minds racing. They then went downstairs to the west wing and told Han Yin everything

.

Han Yin complained to Liu Shi, "You old beggar woman, you've raised your daughter so badly!"

Liu Shi, already seething with anger, was further enraged by Han Yin's complaint. Besides, Han Yin was usually

afraid of her, so when things didn't go her way, she lunged at him, knocking him right into her arms.

Han Yin, startled, immediately apologized, saying, "My dear wife, why are you so upset? Let's talk this out.

I only said a few harsh words because I was anxious."

Seeing him soften, Liu Shi, pleased with herself, cursed again, "Damn it! You say you're anxious, but I'm

even more anxious than you!" She

then lunged at Liu Shi twice more. Han Shi had to pull her head away for a long time before finally managing to calm her down. Taking advantage of a moment of free time, Han Yin hurriedly ran

downstairs , found a clean room, and slipped inside, hiding quietly. Fearing Liu Shi would come,

he used a stick to barricade the door. Lu Huahua, her eyes darting nervously through the crack in the door, watched for a while, and

only when she saw no one approaching did she feel relieved.

Lying on the empty bed, seeing that his wife hadn't come, he felt incredibly fortunate and dared not utter

another sound. But that's another story.

Meanwhile, Liu Shi, after arguing with Han Yin and being separated by Han Shi, saw him go downstairs. Still

furious , she wanted to rush down and fight him again to vent her anger, but with Han Shi's intervention and a hint of fear

of being laughed at, she didn't go down.

Helpless, she could only sit there blankly for a long time.

Seeing that her anger was subsiding, Han slowly discussed the matter with Liu, saying, "Things have come to this point; even if we were to die of anger, it would be futile."

Liu asked, "What do you think , Miss

?" Han replied, "As the saying goes, a predestined marriage cannot be broken up by force. Our daughter has already committed such a shameful act, and is

pregnant. If we follow your suggestion, it would be better to betroth these two girls to the young master Jin

. That would cover up the great shame, and besides, there was an auspicious omen in her dream."

Liu nodded, "

That's a good idea." Liu asked, "How

should we propose this?" Han said, "We shouldn't make this public. We, as sisters-in-law, must inform Yan from beginning to end. I doubt he would

have any reason to object."

Liu agreed, "Yes, yes

." After discussing it, Han said, "We still need to discuss this with my brother before finalizing it.

" Han then bid farewell to Liu and went downstairs to look for Han Yin. She searched the various floors for a long time but couldn't find him.

Han came downstairs, but a small room in the corner was tightly closed. Peeking inside, she saw him lying on

the bed .

Han called out a few times, but Han Yin, thinking it was Liu coming to make noise again, didn't answer. But upon listening more closely,

he recognized his sister's voice and, feeling relieved, hurriedly got up and opened the door.

Han went in and explained the situation. Han Yin, helpless, could only respond with a few words.

After discussing the matter, the brother and sister went to the west building together again. They spoke some promises to Liu, who then went to the back building

to tell Jiao Niang and Jun'e.

Jiao Niang and Jun'e were overjoyed upon hearing this, nodding

repeatedly without saying a word. Liu understood and came down to the west building to tell Han Yin and Han Yin.

Both families had reached an agreement and vowed to live happily ever after.
