Confucius and Jesus once said that first love is infinitely beautiful. As the saying goes, "Under the moon and willow branches, lovers meet after dusk," the romance of student days seems even purer and more beautiful. I'm reposting this piece to commemorate my soon-to-be-ending student days (laughs). Tomorrow I'm going back to school to complete my graduation procedures, and I'll be separated from everyone for a while. Take care! This happened in April 1959. I was two months away from graduating from high school, but I had already found a rotating job at a local textile factory. I earned some money and bought a new, secondhand red Chevy, replacing my old, worn-out car. My new car was in excellent condition and often attracted attention from passersby. With this car, I was a little excited: I could use it to ask her out—Debbie Paige, our principal's daughter, and also the school beauty. Although she seemed more interested in the car than in me, I didn't mind. Since we started dating, Debbie seemed to like my car more and more, and she agreed to let me drive her around. Actually, she preferred the captain of the school's football team, but her parents wouldn't let her associate with someone who was all brawn and no brains. Debbie was planning to attend a university hundreds of miles away after graduation, which meant our relationship would end in a few months, but I was still willing to maintain our current relationship—time was money, after all. We went on dates, kissed, and hugged, but still hadn't had any physical contact. One Friday at noon, after lunch, Debbie and I went to class. I noticed she didn't look well. I knew she had a congenital heart condition and was receiving medication. I talked to her for a bit, asking about her date that weekend evening, and then watched her walk into the classroom. I remember she was wearing a pink short-sleeved shirt, a light gray skirt, and black wedge heels that day. She looked beautiful, really. However, at 2:30 that afternoon, I heard an ambulance siren outside the classroom. After class ended at 3:00, I heard from others that Debbie had suddenly collapsed and been taken to the hospital. I rushed to the hospital emergency room, only to find Debbie's father, mother, and grandmother anxiously waiting outside. I called my factory owner to ask for leave and then joined them in waiting for Debbie to come out. At four o'clock, the doctor in charge of the resuscitation came out and told everyone that Debbie's heart had not improved despite resuscitation efforts, but of course, they would do their best. Everyone present began to pray for Debbie. I sat blankly on a bench in the corridor, with her family. My mind was blank; I could only think of one thing: countless people have accidents every day in the world, but... why her? Why today?! At eight o'clock in the evening, the doctor announced that Debbie had passed away a few minutes earlier due to cardiac arrest after resuscitation efforts failed. Everyone wept bitterly upon hearing the devastating news. Then the doctor asked Debbie's father which funeral home to take the body to, and he said Thompson's would be better. The doctor left. After saying goodbye to Debbie's family, I drove home. On the way, I kept thinking about her. Although we'd dated many times, I'd never really been intimate with her… An uncontrollable desire burned within me, I couldn't explain why. I turned the steering wheel and drove towards Thompson's funeral home. As I approached, I saw Mr. Thompson's hearse enter the yard in the distance. I knew Debbie was in the car; if I could sneak in, I might see her one last time. I parked the car a short distance away and stealthily entered the funeral home through the back door. Hidden in the bushes, I watched through the small ventilation window as Thompson placed Debbie's body into the middle drawer of the refrigerated display case.
