[The Orphan's Love Affair with a Beauty's Rivalry] (Volume 2, Chapter 165)

Chapter 165 Raw Meat and

Blood Qing'er said ingratiatingly, "Actually, Young Master's Mandarin isn't bad either. Who taught you that?"

Wu Yue glared at her and said sullenly, "What's it to you?"

However, regardless, she was right about one thing: how could he

choose ? So he slowly raised his head to survey his surroundings.

The topographical map he had seen countless times in the Qiushui Pavilion study floated into his mind. He knew that the Yehe tribe was on the other side of the river. He and Qing'er only needed to cross the Yehe tribe's territory

and travel about three or four hundred miles northeast, crossing the Yidun River to reach the Songhua River basin, which should be

the Ula tribe located in the southern part of the Murong territory.

As long as he mustered his last breath and escaped there, he and Qing'er would be safe!

However, he seemed to have lost all his strength. He felt like he had only half his life force left, and his stomach was growling with

hunger. The short distance of five or six zhang (approximately 10-15 meters) from the grass to the riverbank felt like climbing the highest mountain in China and

swimming across the widest, most turbulent current—it had exhausted all his energy.

He turned to look at Qing'er; her dark face was completely bloodless, as if she was barely breathing,

even struggling to turn over. She seemed beyond help.

In this state, although he had always considered this little rascal a burden, he had to admit that she

was far more capable of surviving in the wild than he was. If it weren't for her ability to find wildflowers and wild fruits to eat, he would have

starved to death long ago!

They lay on the riverbank, almost unable to move, let alone climb onto a horse. Now, it seemed there was no other

way but to wait for death. He could only pray silently, unless a miracle occurred…

As the saying goes, “Heaven never seals off all paths.” Not long after the thought of a miracle crossed his mind, a

large, light gray hare suddenly darted out from nowhere and slammed into his head with a thud!

He was dizzy again, almost fainting. Qing'er's eyes showed concern, but she

didn't even have the strength to raise her hand to rub the large bump on his head.

He forced his eyes open, enduring the dizziness. The hare, having struck him so badly, was clearly dead;

however, the real cause of death was an arrow embedded in its body.

His eyes lit up. He didn't know where the strength came from, but he grabbed the hare with both hands, brought it to his mouth, bit off a piece of

fur , wolfed down a couple of bites, and handed it to Qing'er, who swallowed hard and pushed it back to him. He grabbed the rabbit by its hind

legs and yanked hard. His strength seemed to return with renewed vigor, and he tore the rabbit in half

. He tossed one half to his lover, and without further hesitation, swallowed the other half whole. He didn't even have time to spit out the smaller bones,

so

he just gulped them down! So hungry was he that he devoured the food with such fervor that he didn't even

notice a man riding up beside him and his lover.

The man stared in disbelief at the two ragged, disheveled savages on the ground. The larger one

was covered in wounds, many of the bandages loosened, revealing worm-like, blood-

red cuts. Sticky red fluid, whether

blood or pus, was still seeping from the wounds.

His face was a patchwork of red and black, filthy and unrecognizable, his mouth and cheeks a bloody mess,

as he continued to devour chunks of flesh and blood—he looked like a cannibalistic demon! The smaller one was even worse

, barely any better than a little monkey crawling out of a garbage dump.

A clear, cold female voice mumbled something, sounding somewhat like the dialect of the Doyan tribe,

yet not quite, though Wuyue couldn't understand a word.

He was startled, instinctively thinking that the owner of the rabbit must have arrived. He quickly gestured for Qing'er

to swallow the half-rabbit, then looked up, staring blankly at the person above him. It was a woman, a very beautiful

woman , wearing a white fur robe and a dark purple mink hat. However, he didn't have time to examine her closely, feeling quite ashamed.

Although he couldn't understand what she was saying, he could vaguely guess that the rabbit originally belonged to her.

He could only shake his head blankly.

The beautiful woman frowned slightly, pondered for a moment, and then asked, "Hey! Who are you? How can you be so

unreasonable as to steal my prey?"

This time she spoke in the Central Plains dialect, which Wuyue understood, but for a moment he didn't know what to say. Stealing someone else

's property was untenable no matter how you looked at it.

The beautiful woman said impatiently, "What are you daydreaming about? Say something!"

Heads popped up one after another above them, and soon they were surrounded by a crowd, all

staring at him and his lover with the curiosity of people admiring rare animals. Whenever he appeared in public, he

inevitably received similar looks, but this time the meaning was completely different. Was it mockery? Disdain? Or

pity?

Since he hadn't spoken before, he decided to play dumb and figure out where these people came from first.

He and his lover were thrown into a haystack by two burly men like rag dolls. Underneath the haystack was a

dilapidated oxcart, just like them, used by herders to haul cow or horse dung—it

reeked . But for him, lying on the soft haystack while traveling was the best

treatment he had received in a while.

He saw the hunters walk along the river for a while, reaching a narrow section where they

crossed a simple wooden bridge. He was delighted, because this was the direction he wanted to go. He walked and walked

, falling asleep and waking up repeatedly—or rather, fainting—but the scenery before him gradually

changed . The coniferous forests and scattered marshes receded slowly from his side, no longer resembling a vast grassland.

Gradually, a gray battlement and a watchtower came into view, their architecture rough and simple, quite different from the style of city walls in

the Central Plains. As he drew closer, under the gray eaves of the watchtower, two rows of target-sized,

dark arrow holes appeared on the wall, twelve horizontally arranged in each row. Below the arrow holes hung a large plaque, black-edged and blue-background, with

a row of large, crooked black characters inscribed on it. Below the plaque was an arched city gate,

guarded on both sides by a dozen or so warriors with curved swords at their waists.

Based on the geographical location, Wu Yue guessed that this castle belonged to the Yehe tribe of the Jurchen people. Unable to communicate with the burly men

around him , and finding it difficult to ask for information, he truly regretted not

learning some Jurchen from Sister Beifeng, or perhaps he shouldn't have acted out of shame and embarrassment towards that beautiful woman earlier.

He tried to strike up a conversation, but it was too late; he never saw the woman again on the journey.

After entering the castle, the group rode straight to the west of the city, arriving at

the gate of a mansion. The gatehouse had a main entrance , with a wooden lattice window on each side. About four zhang apart on either side of the gatehouse were two side rooms with pointed, V

-shaped roofs. Inside the gate was a spacious courtyard, with garages and

stables on either side, and a row of large trees against the wall.

Entering the second courtyard, they were greeted by a large main building, with a side room on each side.

The driver drove the oxcart to the west side room, stopped in front of a room, roughly dragged him and his lover off the cart, pulled

them inside, threw them onto a pile of hay, locked the door, and drove off. Knowing they were incapacitated,

he didn't tie them up.

Wu Yue didn't know what these people planned to do with him and Qing'er, so he could only accept his fate.

As they seemed to have become prisoners, at least they weren't treated as guests. But surely

they wouldn't be killed for a wild rabbit?

He turned to look around. Like the oxcart, this place reeked. It was a woodshed. At the south

end, neatly stacked logs, about the thickness of teapots and a foot long, were piled up. At the east end, against the wall, were stacks

of hay , with some scattered on the ground. They were lying on top of it. The hay, having been stored for a while, had begun to ferment,

no wonder the room smelled so bad.

Qing'er nestled beside him, her small body curled up like a kitten. Having eaten so much

rabbit meat in her hunger, she now only wanted to sleep, and the stench seemed to have no effect on her whatsoever.

Wu Yue felt his eyelids grow heavy and drifted off to sleep. The room gradually dimmed,

making He didn't know how much time had passed; it was probably around lamplight time. The door creaked open,

and a man in a gray robe entered. By the light of the lantern he carried, he could be seen as a

boy of about fifteen or sixteen. The boy casually tossed something to him.

Wu Yue looked closely and saw two leg bones of some animal, either pig or cow, with some

bloody bits of meat remaining on them, not fully cooked. He felt a surge of annoyance. Did these people really think of him and Qing'er as

savage, bloodthirsty gorillas?

Seeing the gray-robed boy turn to leave, he hurriedly called out, "Hey~ brother..."

The boy turned around sharply, his face showing extreme surprise, and stammered, "You, you're human?

And , you're from the Central Plains?"

Wu Yue was overjoyed. He could understand this, because the boy was speaking the Central Plains language! Since leaving the borderlands, he

had never realized how troublesome communication could be. He never expected to encounter a fellow countryman here, and hurriedly said, "Yes!

Of course we're human, from the Central Plains! You, you're also from the Central Plains?"

The boy seemed a little excited as well, turning around to put the lantern on the ground and laughing, "Yes...you and this

child were captured by them, right? They said you were two savages, one big and one small, and I was so scared I didn't dare come near you."

Meeting an old friend in a foreign land always brings a sense of warmth.

Wu Yue sighed, "Alas! We were starving, so we swallowed a wild rabbit they shot, and that's why

they... um, brother, could you give us some cooked food? Who would eat raw food unless absolutely necessary?

By the way, my surname is Xiao..."

To be honest, eating raw meat wasn't a big deal, and it wasn't as fishy as others described. At the time, he was in a hurry

to fill his stomach, and he didn't seem to have any impression of what raw rabbit meat tasted like.

"So it's Young Master Xiao. We're from the same village, you can call me Xiao Fang. I'll go get it for you right away." With that, he picked up the two raw meat bones from the ground, went outside , and

casually tossed them to the big yellow dog in the yard that had barked wildly at Wuyue and

Qing'er .
