[The Orphan's Love Affair with a Beauty's Rivalry] (Volume 3, Chapter 233)

Chapter 233 A Heroic Struggle

On the Liao River front, Zhao Fengyin didn't want to get entangled with Qikete too much. Her primary goal was to recapture

and firmly hold the western bank of the Liao River, a crucial barrier for the eastern part of her territory, which she couldn't afford to lose.

The Xuanfu cavalry turned north along the western bank of the Liao River to recapture Xin'an Fort, then moved south along the river.

The main force of the Jurchen army that advanced to the western bank of the Liao River was Qikete's troops. After Qikete fell into a trap and was defeated, retreating to the eastern bank, he no longer had enough

strength to stop the princess's advance. The Xuanfu cavalry were invincible, recapturing more than ten large and small fortresses,

including Shuangzhou Fort, Shuangcheng Fort, and Liaozhou Fort, along the western bank . By the time Qikete had stabilized his position and led his army across the river to retake the castles, 60,000 soldiers of the Xuanliao Army, mainly infantry, had arrived and quickly took over the castles recaptured by the Xuanfu cavalry. The newly appointed Liaodong Governor Shi Che and Liaodong Commander-in-Chief Shi Tailai also gathered the remnants of the Liaodong garrison and gradually moved into the castles to strengthen defenses. Under the assistance and command of Shi Che, Shi Tailai, and Zhao Long, the commander of the Xuanliao Army, the Princess, following her established strategic plan , rebuilt a strong defensive line along the west bank of the Liao River, engaging in a series of arduous and protracted battles against the surging Qikete army and the subsequent main force of the Jurchen army and Sharwin's army. The Xuanfu cavalry had previously stockpiled a large number of arrows in the castles, and the Princess issued a strict order to the Xuanliao Army and all hold fast and not engage in battle! She, along with Zhao Ting and Meng Guang, led over ten thousand Xuanfu cavalry across the Liao River, infiltrating the enemy-occupied territory on the east bank like phantoms of the night. They swept across the delta region of the Liao and Hun Rivers, attacking Jurchen troops stationed in Yinzhou, Xingzhou, and Chang'anbao . They then crossed the Hun River and approached the fallen Liaodong stronghold of Guide Fortress, giving the surrendered general Sun Erni a major fright ! Facing the princess, he dared not lead his troops out of the city to meet them in battle, instead retreating into Guide Fortress to hold out. The princess did not actually intend to capture Guide Fortress, feeling she lacked the strength; she merely wanted to create a large impression behind enemy lines to tie down Sharwin's forces deployed to the front lines and relieve pressure on the defenders on the west bank of the Liao River. Even so, Zhao Ting's feigned attack on Guide Fortress with a portion of the Xuanfu cavalry was quite impressive, employing ladders , catapults, and battering rams, and they were on the verge of capturing the castle. The eldest princess hesitated for a moment, wondering if she should enter the city to allow her troops to rest. Then she received a secret report that the fifth prince, Uyaqige, had dispatched 5,000 iron cavalry to reinforce them, still over . She acted decisively, joining forces with Zhao Ting and leading the Xuanfu iron cavalry on another rapid advance. They moved to the area around several fallen castles, including Baha and Qigetai, harassing and attacking the Jurchen army's rear, preventing enemy supplies and reinforcements from reaching the front lines. This region was located on the border between the Millennium Empire and the Jin Dynasty before the Liaodong War, approaching the old . Sharwin dared not be careless and had to divide his forces to deal with the eldest princess's light cavalry, further weakening the forces available to attack the city on the west bank of the Liao River. The Liaodong war thus entered a stalemate. Because the Xuanfu iron cavalry were light cavalry with ample spare horses, they were highly mobile and adept , making it difficult for Sharwin to muster enough forces for a complete encirclement. Of course, through the recent series of battles, he was well aware that even if he could quickly gather enough strength, it was hard to say whether he could capture the cunning princess. After this period of city sieges and defenses, Sharwin looked down at the huge military map before him, frowning remaining silent. On the map, the eight red arrows on the Liaodong front that had crossed the Liao River had been stationary for a long time with little progress, while the casualties of the troops were considerable; on Sakhalin Island in the north, the three red arrows were also making slow progress due to the fierce resistance of the Guwei tribe along the Wulie River. These Jurchen people, uncivilized and primitive, were still in a stage of eating raw meat and drinking blood, maintaining a primitive and backward group marriage custom. Mothers and sons , fathers and daughters, and brothers and sisters could freely mate and have children. He had visited that long, narrow island with a vast land area and a sparse population . Every spring, he often saw naked, hairy women freely mating with men in the grass, without any regard for others. The island's inhabitants were few in number, but they were wild, untamed, fierce, and brave. He had suffered a lot at the hands of these barbarians while on the island, so it was no wonder that Ziyan and Yun'er encountered obstacles there... Of course, as wise and intelligent as he was, as a man of his generation, he was not entirely unaware that Ziyan and her daughter were capable enough to fight so hard. He was not unaware that his eldest daughter had some grievances against him after the execution of his eldest son, Chubita. He was also aware that Ziyan had some different opinions about the selection of ministers of state after the establishment of the state. Precisely because he considered his eldest daughter 's feelings, he specially appointed his second son, who was not particularly talented and was her younger brother, Maihan, as the first minister of state. Deep down, however, his eldest daughter and fifth son were the most talented among his children. Maihan's recent performance had fallen further and further behind his expectations, making it seem highly unlikely that he would gain the approval of the tribal alliance assembly and smoothly succeed to the throne. The Wenhan family had grown to such a great extent under his leadership, which was already worthy of their ancestors. He was getting old, and how to manage this vast empire, expand its territory, and ensure that their respective people were well- fed for his children to worry about. As for who would succeed him after his death, according to tribal tradition, the tribal alliance assembly would elect the most virtuous and capable among his descendants ; he didn't need to worry about it. In recent years, his children had split into two factions, each led by his eldest daughter and fifth son, Uyaqig, respectively, engaging in open and covert struggles. As long as they didn't go too far, he didn't bother to interfere. Both were these struggles had recently intensified, and it was time to take some measures. Regardless, this protracted castle siege was not the war he desired. His goal of acquiring wealth through war had already been achieved. Ziyan had expanded the Jin territory to the North Sea and major overseas islands on the northern front, and almost all of the former Xianbei lands were now under his control. Ziyan had rendered invaluable service, and forcing her to march south would be unreasonable. The outline of the powerful Xianbei Empire vaguely appeared in his mind, but for now, it was best to stop while he was ahead. Shangming, Wuyaqige, and Qikete stood behind him, all silent and trembling, Qikete especially dejected ! After the defeat at Lingshan, he led his troops in pursuit of the isolated Xuanfu cavalry, determined to catch them and fight again to reclaim their lost glory.

However, the eldest princess disregarded his pursuit and gave him no chance. The enemy was a band of light steppe

cavalry , each with an average of three horses. Their attack power was slightly inferior to his, but their mobility was far superior. His heavy cavalry

couldn't keep up with their pace, and his father's forces were limited, unable to create a comprehensive encirclement. He could only

watch helplessly as his opponents galloped freely between the Liao and Hun Rivers. Forget revenge; he couldn't even

catch a glimpse of them!

After careful consideration, Sharwin ordered the main Jin army force along the Liaodong front to retreat to their old stronghold. Except for Sun

Erni leading troops to garrison the strategically important Guide Fortress, he ordered all other castles to be looted, then massacred

and burned !
