Alibuda Chronicles Part 1: Volume 3, Chapter 8

Chapter Eight: Twin Rainbows

We set off with Mao Yan'an. Once we were all on the road, we realized that his claim of being a cartographer as a side job was indeed true. Many of the hidden shortcuts he led us through were even unknown to the local orcs. When we encountered checkpoints, he would simply chat for a few minutes, show us his cartographer's documents, and the orc soldiers at the checkpoints would smile and let us through—it was much smoother than I had expected.

"I didn't realize you were so talented, Brother Mao. I thought you were just a mediocre, low-level painter. You're quite something!"

"What are you saying? I have great confidence in my painting skills. The Golden Flower Federation once invited me to be their president's personal painter, but I resigned after three months."

The Golden Flower Federation was a large country located north of Solancia, home to the Temple of Light, Cihang Jingdian. It was a nation with a high level of culture and art. Being able to serve as their personal painter was a remarkable achievement. Hearing him say this, Ah Xue even exclaimed in surprise.

"Wow, that's amazing, Uncle! So why did you quit your job?"

Flicking the water droplets from his brush, Mao Yan'an chuckled. "Because I realized I'm still an artist who yearns for freedom. Living a life of luxury in a grand garden, painting stereotypical pictures that glorify God's glory and the leader's majesty, even with a high salary, is just too boring. In contrast, wandering through mountains and rivers, accompanied by the wind, sunlight, and fine wine—that's the life of an artist!"

As he spoke, Mao Yan'an's face lit up with joy; he clearly enjoyed his current lifestyle. Since our values weren't aligned, I refrained from commenting on this free but precarious existence. However, after spending two days

with him, I increasingly appreciated the elegant demeanor of this middle-aged painter. Especially on the second day of our journey, after shaving his beard, tying his long, disheveled hair with a ribbon, and giving himself a quick wash, he looked completely different. After shaving his long beard, he truly looked like a handsome man. Tying his long hair up made him appear even more energetic, as if he had become more than ten years younger, radiating vitality. Picking up his favorite paintbrush, dipping it in water and painting, his cheerful smile revealing bright, gleaming teeth made him look as young as us, even more vibrant. Calling him "uncle" was truly inappropriate.

A few strands of gray at his temples were more noticeable with his hair tied up, but under the influence of his vigorous energy, they only added to his middle-aged charm, showing no signs of aging. As he laughed heartily, pointed out the scenery, and strode along, women passing by frequently turned their heads, involuntarily drawn to his presence.

"Hey, Uncle Mao, what's the point of you painting Ah Xue all day?"

"Nothing special. I just love beautiful things. I get an itch to capture them as soon as I see them. That's why I chose to become a painter."

Mao Yan'an said, "Miss Ah Xue is such a beautiful woman. I've traveled all over the world, and there aren't many women who can amaze me like this. Since we're all together, of course I have to seize the opportunity."

To make it easier for him to paint, Ah Xue, who usually wore a mask, now used a veil to cover her face. She was still extremely beautiful, but I just couldn't believe that someone could paint the same model every day without getting tired of it.

"Such a lofty ideal? But honestly, is it really just for painting? Every time you have Ah Xue pose in different ways, looking at her beautiful figure and full breasts, don't you really feel anything?"

Hearing my words, Mao Yan'an sighed, seemingly filled with endless emotion, and said, "In my youth, I was quite the ladies' man, indulging in countless romantic escapades. Looking back, I'm truly ashamed. Now, although I see beautiful women, my heart is as still as water, without any other desires."

"Go away, just say you're not feeling well, don't waste my breath."

"This… doesn't seem to be what I meant."

With his humble attitude, witty remarks, and handsome appearance, Uncle Mao was truly the best travel companion. He was also very tactful, not asking questions he shouldn't. For example, he mentioned once why I was going to Skeva Song Tower City, but seeing my vague answers, he didn't press further.

"If it's just for sightseeing, that's the best option. The scenery there is beautiful, and although the mountains are a bit steep, there are definitely many stunning views. But if you have other purposes, it'll be more troublesome. If the Zoroastrians find out you have connections with the Feathered Clan, you could be in grave danger at any time. Even though you're the commander of ten thousand cavalry in Alibuda, you're in the Southern Barbarians, and even your country can't protect you."

Mao Yan'an subtly offered us some advice. I had considered what he said, but if there was no danger, this trip wouldn't be considered a test. Since I had already promised Sister Dragon Girl, I had to complete the mission no matter what.

"Let me make this clear first: I'm only responsible for being a guide, not a bodyguard. If we encounter any danger, everyone should protect themselves."

I had estimated our current fighting strength, and the answer was truly discouraging. If the enemy were those stupid orcs who only knew brute force, we could handle them. Compared to brute force, the pretty little A Xue might be the strongest warrior in the Southern Barbarians. However, if the enemy has a master like a Beast Demon, we'll be in danger. Brute force is useless against the ever-changing magic of beast magic. If it weren't for the dragon-leopard as our main fighting force, our situation would be even worse.

"Hey? Isn't the beast magic of the Southern Barbarians about first slaughtering a ferocious beast, then refining its flesh and soul into a beast demon? If you absolutely refuse to practice dark magic, why not kill this leopard and practice beast magic instead?"

I once asked Ah Xue half-jokingly, only to be met with a disgruntled glare from her. Actually, I wasn't very clear about the methods of refining beast magic either, because those methods are highly confidential among the various beast races, and only the clan's priests are allowed to study them. However, the erotic magic book mentions the relevant techniques, and if I calmly study them for a while, I might be able to create them.

If we could travel peacefully all the way to our destination, that would be ideal, of course. Unfortunately, the Southern Barbarian Giant Sun God didn't cooperate with the wishes of outsiders, and half a month after we set off, we finally encountered an obstacle.

For the first ten days after setting off, we traveled on the highway. But after ten days, we changed our gear and turned to forest trails, traversing dense forests and climbing mountains. Initially, things went smoothly, though the climbs were arduous. However, on the fifth day in the dense forest, just as we were about to find a place to rest, Violet growled softly, indicating that others were approaching.

"Ah Xue, let me down!"

I told Ah Xue to bend down, and I got off the stool behind her. I glanced at Mao Yan'an, who shook his head in confusion. We were still several days' journey from Skeva City, and this was a rarely traveled path; logically, we shouldn't have encountered the Feathered Clan.

My choice seemed a step too late. The other side was incredibly fast. We heard a commotion of footsteps in the woods ahead, and two figures darted out. Seeing someone ahead, they were both startled.

"Sister, they..."

Both were cloaked, their faces obscured, and petite in stature, clearly two women. The way one addressed them further confirmed they were sisters.

Upon seeing each other, both were stunned, not expecting to encounter strangers here. Before we could react, another commotion erupted from the woods, this time much louder. As the chaotic footsteps drew closer, more than ten trees fell—a group of tiger-clan beastmen had charged out. This mountain path

, rarely frequented by humans, far from ordinary tribes, shouldn't have led to encounters with beastmen, let alone thirty or fifty at once. Seeing that they were all dressed in identical light armor, with spears and maces at their waists, they were clearly not ordinary travelers, but a small group belonging to some organization. Judging from the flame patterns on their breastplates, they were almost certainly members of the Zoroastrian cult.

The tiger-men seemed to have been chasing the two sisters. Seeing them, their eyes lit up with joy, but upon discovering us bystanders, they were surprised for a moment, then roared and surrounded us.

Judging from their menacing appearance, they clearly had ill intentions, and their target was the two sisters; they just hadn't decided what to do with us yet. At that moment, I made a decision.

"Listen, these people have nothing to do with us..."

The same words came from both my mouth and the elder of the two women's mouths simultaneously. After speaking, we looked at each other in even greater astonishment.

I analyzed the situation in my mind. The two sisters were the beastmen's main target. The fact that they were distancing themselves from us at this time was naturally because they didn't want to involve others, not because they were begging for mercy. And saying such things meant either they were too kind-hearted or they possessed amazing skills and didn't want to drag strangers into their way. If that was the case, why should I act like a villain? Besides, given the ferocity of these beastmen, even if they distanced themselves, would they really ignore us?

With that thought, I changed my mind. I drew the Hyakkimaru from my waist and charged towards the orc furthest from me, shouting, "Ah Xue, attack!"

You wouldn't normally guess that Ah Xue, besides being incredibly strong, was also incredibly fast. Upon receiving my command, she sprinted ahead, instantly appearing before me and crashing into the orc.

The tiger-headed orc, seeing such a beautiful young girl charging at him, didn't seem to care at all, even turning to his companions and laughing. However, that laughter quickly turned into a wail.

During our travels, Mao Yan'an had consulted books and taught Ah Xue some basic self-defense techniques. Knowing her progress in black magic was slow, the girl had been very diligent in practicing these rudimentary martial arts moves, each one solid and hard-earned. Now, these techniques were proving useful. Using the momentum from that instant acceleration, Ah Xue slightly tilted her body and unleashed a move similar to the Overlord Elbow. The next moment, Ah Xue's entire arm was almost pierced into the opponent's chest. Besides the unfortunate orc's scream, we even heard the sound of bones breaking.

With a deafening crash, the orc foamed at the mouth and fell unconscious to the ground. Ah Xue seemed very surprised, not expecting her elbow to have such destructive power. The two sisters also exclaimed in surprise. Mao Yan'an and I, thinking of the orc's pain in his chest, felt his pain as well and frowned at the same time.

"You bitch!"

The orcs, realizing the terrifying destructive power of this little woman, roared and surrounded her, but they were still a step too slow. Ah Xue kicked one of the attacking orcs, sending him flying backward and crashing into his companion behind him, all of them tumbling face-first into the dirt.

"Useless trash, then defeat me!"

After pestering Mao Yan'an for several days, A Xue had picked up a few awkward, incoherent phrases of powerful speech. When she shouted them during the battle, they did indeed carry a certain air of authority, startling the surrounding orcs. However, even she probably didn't understand what she was saying.

An orc charged forward, brandishing his spear. A Xue, quick as a flash, grabbed his thick arm and shoved him aside. Compared to her opponent, A Xue's delicate arm was as thin as an ivory chopstick, but amidst the gasps of the crowd, the enormous orc was flung into the air, soaring more than ten feet into the air before crashing heavily into the nearby woods.

A chaotic battle ensued. Facing what was arguably the strongest warrior in the Southern Barbarian lands, the orcs were utterly helpless. Though their claws were sharp, Ah Xue was incredibly fast; ordinary attacks couldn't touch her. Instead, she managed to knock down several more at a time. It wasn't until seven or eight orcs surrounded her, tightening the encirclement, that Ah Xue found herself in grave danger under the threat of weapons.

"Violet, you go!"

Before I could even give the order, Violet had already darted forward to aid her mistress. With the help of the dragon-leopard, the entire situation instantly reversed. Before the spears and maces could strike, Violet's high-temperature flames arrived, instantly turning three orcs on the left side of the encirclement into fireballs, who rolled aside screaming in agony.

With Violet's pounces and bites, Ah Xue quickly turned the tide. Her energetic punches and kicks were truly unstoppable.

She drew the enemy's main force, but a few orcs still approached from our side, attempting to attack the two men who didn't look particularly formidable. This is truly disrespectful. Mao Yan'an is a scholar, that's understandable, but even though I'm physically weak, I'm still a military officer.

"Hmm, no manpower? Uncle, you go!"

Even for a military officer, a smart general doesn't need to fight himself. Besides, I've always been curious, with the current unstable situation in various countries, and the mountains and wilderness being even more unsafe, how could he have managed to roam for so many years without any martial prowess?

"Huh? Do I have to go too? I'm not a bodyguard."

"You're an uncle, haven't you heard the bards say that in all legendary adventure stories, the protagonist always has an uncle by his side? That uncle must possess extraordinary skills. Before the protagonist becomes stronger, this uncle is specifically used to fight. So, go and kill the enemy, uncle."

"Hmm, that makes sense. Since you say so, I can't help but lend a hand."

He had been looking quite puzzled, but after hearing what I said, Mao Yan'an nodded, seriously rolled up his sleeves, revealing his fist, which didn't look very impressive, and then shoved me, who was sneering, forward.

"Oh! This shouldn't be happening... Mao Yan'an, go to hell..."

His push was so strong that I stumbled back more than ten steps. Just as I regained my balance, an orc was already in front of me, its tiger claw slamming down with tremendous force. In the nick of time, I raised the Hyakkimaru and flicked it upwards. A flash of red light appeared, easily dislodging the tiger claw. Then, with the help of my divine weapon, I thrust forward and instantly finished off the orc.

The spells from the erotic magic book weren't suitable for close combat where there was no time to chant incantations. Besides, I didn't want to use them in front of strangers, letting the whole world know I practiced lewd and evil arts. So, I could only rely on my rudimentary martial arts skills. While the orcs relied on their strength and sharp teeth, I relied on the sharpness of my sword to hold them back from their attacks. Unexpectedly, the two sisters seemed stunned, showing no reaction whatsoever.

But this situation couldn't last long. Realizing their subordinates were ineffective, several orcs, like the leader of the orc squad, began to act. Three tiger-men with cloaks slowly raised their hands, chanting incantations, and magical fluctuations appeared—the prelude to unleashing beast magic.

(Oh no!

I thought, alarmed. I told Xue and Violet to stay close; with the dragon-leopard protecting them, lower-level beast demons shouldn't pose a threat. However, before I could finish speaking, an incredibly bright white light suddenly rose from my right rear, dazzling and blinding.)

(Is this... Beast Magic?

It probably is, because within this white light, I sensed the unique magical fluctuations of Beast Magic, though I couldn't discern what kind of beast it was. This was naturally because the person who made the move was deliberately concealing it. But one thing surprised me greatly: this unknown beast exuded a sacred feeling almost like light magic, something I had never seen or heard of before.

I vaguely saw the beasts of the three tiger-man leaders; as soon as they were released, they were immediately destroyed along with their masters by the white light. Then the white light intensified, and as a series of whooshing sounds swept by, the white light disappeared. Regardless of direction, all the tiger-men lay dead on the ground, arrow-like wounds left on their vital points. The entire team was wiped out by the immense power of this unknown beast.

The cause of this victory was the two sisters who had been standing behind us. After annihilating the beastmen, the younger sister seemed to want to say a few words, but was pulled away by her older sister.)

"Are you two from Cihang Jingdian... um, disciples of Layman Xindeng?"

Just as the two sisters were about to turn away, Mao Yan'an's words made them stop.

"And this gentleman is..."

"I once served as the court painter for the Golden Flower Federation, and had the honor of meeting the Divine Nun Cihang, and also had a brief encounter with the Layman of the Heart Lamp..."

If he hadn't shaved his beard, he might have looked somewhat respectable, but with his beard shaved, Mao Yan'an referring to himself as "this old man" sounded utterly incongruous. Reciting platitudes like a resume is common practice among martial arts figures. Even if it was just a few words exchanged at a banquet, and the other party had no recollection of it afterward, it could still be said that they had met once—a technique for elevating one's status. However, the people he mentioned were indeed of great importance.

The Cihang Jingdian of the "Palace of Light" was the center of righteous forces on Earth, and also the center of the faith in light.

The palace housed countless masters, and was mortal enemies with the Dark Temple, whose location and masters were unknown. They had been locked in a constant struggle since their inception, dominating the rise and fall of good and evil forces on Earth.

The previous generation's Palace Master had many disciples, but only three were ultimately able to inherit his mantle and gain his recognition as disciples.

The third disciple, Layman Xin Deng, had a fortuitous encounter in his youth and is proficient in extremely rare fire magic. He is said to be a refined scholar with a tranquil disposition and a love of literature. After his senior brother took over as Palace Master, he departed to wander the world.

The second disciple, Master Xin Chan, is the current head of the Palace of Light, a revered and virtuous man with numerous disciples, almost all of whom are princes of various countries or renowned martial arts masters. Our Second Princess, Leng Linglan, is one of his students.

As for the eldest disciple, Divine Nun Xin Yin, she is the most outstanding figure in the Palace of Light. Her Zen Buddhist cultivation and divine magic of light have reached their peak, earning her the highest title of "Universal Salvation and Compassion." Her martial arts skills also place her among the five strongest in the world. Tianhe Xueqiong is said to be her disciple. However, she has been in seclusion for many years, making it impossible for princes of various countries to pay homage. Mao Yan'an's so-called audiences were mostly glimpses of her from afar during a grand blessing ceremony at the Palace.

However, his words immediately had an effect. The two sisters exchanged glances and asked in unison, "May I ask who you are, senior...?"

Mao Yan'an displayed the paintbrush and scroll in his bag and smiled, "

I am Mao Yan'an. Ten years have passed since I met with the Hermit of the Heart Lamp at the Cihang Jingdian. Time flies. I wonder if my old friend is still well?" I didn't know how magical this name was, but the other party immediately exclaimed in surprise, and their attitude became much more respectful. They changed their previous high-handed attitude of not wanting to get involved with us and bowed deeply.

"So you are the learned scholar, Mr. Mao. My master often mentions your name to us. It is a great pleasure to meet you today."

What a prestigious title! Strangely, I don't think I've ever heard of it before. At this moment, Xue and Violet approached and asked me curiously what had happened. I couldn't answer, but my mind kept ringing with warning signals, as if something very dangerous had happened, but I couldn't remember what it was.

"Beast magic possesses such a strong sacred aura that the Southern Barbarian Beast Clan could not forge it. Although the Palace of Light has many capable individuals, only the Layman knows the method of forging beast magic. And the Layman's disciples are few and far between. Indeed, my guess was correct; it is indeed my two nieces, Yu Ni and Yu Hong. But if I remember correctly, the Layman once mentioned to me that you should be..."

Mao Yan'an spoke with reservation, then smiled and said, "We are heading to Skeva Songlou City, which is located in a remote area. Do my two nieces know the way? If you don't mind, how about we travel together?"

It was probably this sentence that had a decisive influence. After a brief whisper, the sisters removed their cloaks and hoods. What appeared before us was truly a sight to behold. They were twin sisters who looked exactly alike, about sixteen or seventeen years old, wearing the same style of white warrior outfits, with thin armor over them, long swords at their waists, and the emblem of the Cihang Jingdian embroidered on their chests.

"Oh my, Master, these two young ladies are so beautiful..."

Even without Ah Xue saying it, I felt the same way. Both sisters had emerald green eyes, their dazzling golden hair brighter than the sunlight, and their delicate, radiant beauty and youthful, athletic figures made them truly stunning beauties. Although they looked alike, they were easily distinguishable because of their different attire.

The younger sister, Yu Hong, had short hair and a charming smile; the diagonal stripes on her breastplate ran from right to left, and her longsword was also worn on the right side. The older sister, Yu Ni, had her long hair tied in a ponytail, appearing much more mature and dignified; the diagonal stripes on her breastplate and the position of her longsword were opposite to her sister's.

These were all things that attracted our attention, but what surprised Ah Xue and me the most was that after the sisters removed their cloaks, with a "whoosh," a snow-white wing simultaneously unfolded from their backs. Spreading in the wind, the two sisters looked like celestial fairies, beautiful and captivating.

"Is it...the Feather Clan?"

Ah Xue and I were both surprised. We hadn't expected to encounter beautiful Feather Clan girls here before even reaching their base. But why did they seem unaware of the location of Skeva Song Tower City?

"We heard news that the Fire Worship Cult was secretly mobilizing to prepare for the siege of Skeva Song Tower City. My sister and I rushed here, hoping to help before the enemy arrived,"

Yu Ni said. "However, we've never been there before, and we haven't been back to our hometown for a long time, so we got lost here. It's really great to meet you, Uncle."

Given the current situation in the Southern Barbarians, the two sisters certainly wouldn't want to reveal their Feather Clan origins. Their willingness to reveal it now was out of necessity.

"It's alright, it's alright. Since we're all going to the same place, let's set off together. It's only a few days' journey anyway."

Mao Yan'an's warm smile seemed more cunning to me than usual, but the matter that still puzzled me was something I just couldn't recall.

"These two are my nephew Lan Diao and niece A Xue. You two should get to know each other."

This old fellow really knows how to take advantage; with just a few words, he's become our uncle. Even so, I certainly wouldn't refuse the opportunity to meet these beauties, so I took the initiative to greet them. A Xue, to show her sincerity, even removed her veil, revealing her true face.

At that moment, a very important thing flashed through my mind.

Among the seven beauties, there's a "twin rainbow," which I've heard are twin sisters. They work as constables in the Golden Finch Federation, apprehending criminals, and are very close to that wretched woman, Leng Linglan. Judging from the circumstances, they must be these two sisters.

These two are disciples of the Heart Lamp Hermit, and they don't receive training in the Palace of Light. Logically, they shouldn't be familiar with important people in the palace, but since they're acquainted with Leng Linglan, a disciple of the Heart Chan Divine Monk, could they also know Tianhe Xueqiong, the Dharma successor of the Heart Seal Divine Nun?

Even with a one in ten thousand chance, even if this idea came true, the consequences would definitely be…

This thought flashed through my mind. I tried to stop it, but it was too late. Ah Xue's veil was removed, and as her true face was revealed, she smiled and greeted the Japanese sisters warmly. An incredulous gasp escaped from both sisters at the same time.

At that moment, everything went black before my eyes. Only one phrase from the Youli dialect, which Mao Yan'an had privately taught me a couple of days ago—not the language of the strong, but extremely useful—came to mind:

"Boss, we're going to be screwed this time!"
