Nightly Wails and Ghostly Howls: The Town Demon's Shadow [Chapter 5]

Chapter Five The Thoughts in One's Mind Are Invisible Knives

Almidi looked at Xiu Yi with some fear. This man was far more cunning than she had imagined. Had he discovered everything she had done last night? No, it was impossible for someone to follow her without her noticing. He must have gotten up in the night and found her missing. What should she tell him? That she had gone out, jumped out the window? What had she been doing so late? Perhaps…

“I didn’t go out!” Almidi said, feigning displeasure.

“I just heard some strange noises from the window last night. I thought you were afraid of disturbing my rest, so you went through the window instead of the outer room where I was. Actually, it’s alright. I slept very well in bed. You’re being too polite!” In fact, Xiu Yi was very tired last night and fell asleep as soon as he got into bed. How could he have heard any noises from the window? He was just testing Almidi with his words. He always felt that this beautiful woman exuded a mysterious aura.

"Ah, the moonlight was beautiful last night. I opened the window to look at it, but I didn't mean to disturb you. I'm sorry!" Almidy breathed a slight sigh of relief.

"It's alright, Miss Almidy!" Xiu Yi replied, secretly amused: Admiring the moonlight? Can you even see the moon from your window? What a brainless woman! Speaking of which, where was she going? A secret rendezvous? The thought made Xiu Yi jealous of the men who might be intimate with Almidy, and a pang of disappointment shot through her.

Actually, Xiu Yi didn't need to be too jealous. One of the men who had been intimate with Almidy had become a "great man," and the other would probably be bedridden for days.

"Mr. Xiu Yi?" Seeing Xiu Yi lost in thought, Almidy felt a little uneasy.

"I'm sorry, I was thinking about something and got a little distracted. My apologies!" Xiu Yi looked up and smiled.

"What are you thinking about?"

"Some things from my childhood." Xiu walked to the window. "When I was very young, I lived in this town."

Xiu pointed to a building on the street. "That used to be my home!"

"Did you live in that house?" Almidt asked with interest. "

No

, I lived in the garbage dump in front of the house. Every day I ate leftovers that others threw away, had to fight with dogs for food, and endured beatings and scoldings... I don't know what pleasure they got from bullying me! Until later, I met my adoptive father." At this point, Xiu gradually became melancholic, his face darkening. He couldn't help but recall how a little blonde girl had given him a gold coin; that was the first time he met that girl named Anna…

"Rather than accept charity, I'd rather rob and kill…" This was the thought deep within Xiu's heart.

"If I hadn't met my father back then, I'd probably still be crawling on the ground like a dog!" After saying this, Xiu Yi turned and left.

"That person, so pitiful!" Almidi felt a pang of sadness, staring blankly at Xiu Yi's departing figure.

Xiu Yi rode his Shadow Warhorse wildly along the forest path, trying to cast aside all his unhappiness, but only felt increasingly agitated.

How could he have said these things to that woman? Could it be that he...? Xiu Yi found the thought laughable. He was notorious in the army for his aversion to women, a fact that made him a laughingstock among his colleagues, known as the "virgin soldier"! Right after the war ended, Qiu Yeyu, who served on the eastern front, even sent him a magical pill, something like a rare aphrodisiac, and what was most infuriating was the note attached: "Congratulations on Xiu Yi's first experience!" He still had that pill on him…

“These days there are more virgins than virgins, so I’m not embarrassed… Right, Qiu Yeyu still owes me a lot of money. Does he think he can use this damn aphrodisiac and that lady’s hand-made pistol to pay off his debt? I can’t let that kid fool me…” Xiu Yi thought to himself.

“Forget it, stop thinking about that woman named Mitty. Try thinking about something else. I wonder how that girl named Anna is doing…”

Xiu Yi slowly calmed himself down and slowed his horse. As he passed a grove of trees, he suddenly noticed something glittering inside and stopped to investigate. The object

reflecting the light was a broken curved sword. Xiu Yi picked it up and carefully examined his surroundings. He quickly noticed that the soil had been recently turned over. After checking other areas and finding nothing suspicious, Xiu Yi began digging with the broken sword.

Before Xiu Yi lay the corpses of over a dozen soldiers from the Kingdom of Eltoya, severed hands, feet, and heads, their entrails spilling out, emitting a strong stench of decay.

"Who did this?" Xiu Yi carefully examined the wounds on the corpses, noticing marks that appeared to be from sharp claws; the flesh was a dark purple, suggesting the claws were poisonous. One naked corpse was particularly strange; its body was completely drained of blood, yet it bore no wounds, except for its erect genitals. Xiu Yi examined this corpse closely.

Touching the body, Xiu Yi felt the skin was extremely dry, devoid of any moisture; the penis was erect, the tip still bearing traces of dried blood. The deceased's expression was bizarre, a serene peace as if having seen heaven, devoid of any fear, which Xiu Yi found extremely eerie.

Just as Xiu Yi was examining the bodies, footsteps sounded from outside the forest. Startled, she leaped into a tree, hoping to hide under the dense foliage. But then a loud bang rang out. Xiu Yi quickly swung her magic sword to deflect a bullet aimed at her chest, but landed on the ground.

"A musket!" Xiu Yi exclaimed in surprise.

Standing before her were about twenty soldiers from the Kingdom of Eltoya, all in neat white uniforms. Two of them held muskets, one of them busy loading one—presumably the one who had ambushed Xiu Yi.

"Damn Imperial Army! Did you kill these people?" a man who appeared to be an officer demanded.

Seeing the situation, Xiu Yi knew a battle was inevitable. She decided to finish them off right there. A cold smile crept across her face. Then ,

explosions, the clash of swords, and screams echoed through the woods, followed by silence. After a while, Xiu Yi emerged from the forest, dusted himself off, mounted his horse, and rode away.

The outcome was obvious. How could mere border guards be a match for the elite warriors of the Empire? They were hacked down like scarecrows, row upon row. After dealing with the two groups of corpses, Xiu Yi rode off triumphantly. However, judging from their identities, they seemed to be the True Pig Bend outpost garrison of the Kingdom of Eltoia. Let

me explain the origin of the name True Pig Bend. Long ago, there was a pig herder here whose pigs were of exceptionally good quality, known far and wide as the "true pigs." "Bend" means valley. So, True Pig Bend means the valley that produces truly high-quality pigs. It is now part of the Kingdom of Eltoia, and a garrison company is stationed there.

At this moment, Xiu Yi, still on horseback, was savoring the battle he had just fought. He suddenly felt that he was being twisted; he actually felt a thrill when killing. The thought of swords tearing through flesh, blood splattering, and heads falling to the ground was exhilarating and terrifying. Was this a lingering effect of the last war? Xiu Yi began to lose control of the urge to kill within him, and he couldn't help but recall what Instructor Ghost Beard had said when teaching him Dark Battle Qi:

"Once you kill the first person, you can kill the second, the third, until the thousandth, the ten thousandth! Yes, at first it feels helpless, but as you keep killing, you'll discover the fun—you can kill people like this! Eventually, you'll find you can't live without killing. For example, me, if I don't kill someone for a day, my hands itch; the second day, my whole body aches; the third day, I can't even sleep."

Xiu Yi watched Ghost Beard's animated speech (sorry, only the beard is visible), and a chill ran down his spine as he recalled the disappearances on campus.

"After you've experienced a major war, you'll understand the true meaning of the Gruprita Knights. It's a term for people who find their value in battle, in killing and being killed. Then you'll find that only by constantly doing this kind of thing can you feel alive!" Ghost Beard said with a sinister grin.

"Now, are my hands starting to itch too?" Xiu Yi asked himself, gazing towards the town of Belan.

"What if there were a town-wide massacre?" Xiu Yi began to ponder, recalling the scenes of massacres during the western front:

Although they controlled the battlefield, each legion suffered heavy losses. Seeing their longtime friends and confidants fall, the entire Imperial Army went mad. After breaching the city, they began a massacre. The goal was simple—to reduce the city's population; the order was simple—leave no one alive! Soldiers rushing into the city killed indiscriminately, setting houses on fire one by one. A soldier raping a woman, when she resisted, beheaded her and then raped her corpse...

The fires that engulfed the city dyed the entire night sky red, known as the Night of the Longsword on the western front. At the time, Xiu Yi was astonished by the cruelty of his own troops. When the attacking troops returned to their camp with their spoils, they shouted gleefully, "Dead! Dead! All dead! We've wiped out the enemy!" Then, cheers of "Long live the Empire!" soared into the sky. Xiu Yi couldn't deny that everyone seemed happy at the time.

Indeed, war is a soldier's lifeline; promotion and wealth depend entirely on it. The more bones an officer has under his feet, the higher his rank. Xiu couldn't help but wonder why he joined the army in the first place. Wasn't it to get ahead? He had suffered countless humiliations as a child and was terrified of poverty. What could he do after retiring? As a soldier, one should handle every matter with sharp logic to achieve a reasonable outcome. Everything should be linked to one's life goals, and one should never act on emotion or follow the crowd! One should also keep some secrets from superiors who hold one's fate in their hands, and not reveal anything crucial to them. The relationship between the Reinga Empire and the Eltoya Kingdom is currently very delicate. Shouldn't he also handle it with sharp logic to achieve a reasonable outcome?

So how to muddy the waters? "The bloody night in Belan Town?" Even so, Xiu was disgusted by the idea of harming the elderly, women, and children. This thought only flashed through his mind. "The True Pig Bend Outpost Garrison?" A sudden thought flashed through Xiu Yi's mind, recalling his encounter in the forest.

"Excellent! Since I've already started, I might as well finish it off!" A charming smile appeared on Xiu Yi's face as he rode his warhorse towards the territory of the Kingdom of Eltoia.

That day, the True Pig Bend Outpost on the border of the Kingdom of Eltoia received an uninvited guest. An Imperial officer in black uniform, led by soldiers from the garrison, met with the garrison captain.

"I apologize for the intrusion, but it is out of necessity. I have important matters to discuss with you in person," Xiu Yi said to the captain, while observing the number and position of the garrison soldiers.

"What brings you here, sir?" The captain was surprised that an Imperial Gruprita Knight had returned to such a remote outpost.

"Didn't you send a patrol to the border area near Belan Town?" It seemed to be only a hundred men; in such a short time, Xiu Yi had already grasped the full extent of their strength.

"Yes, what happened?" the captain asked, puzzled.

"Unfortunately, they were all killed. I found their bodies in the woods near the town, so I came to inform you. From the wounds on the bodies, we can roughly deduce the killer. Would you like to know who did it?" Xiu Yi said respectfully.

"Tell me quickly, who killed my men?!" the captain roared, almost in a fit of rage.

"It was me!" Xiu Yi said with a smile, and before the captain could react, she decapitated him with a single sword stroke. At the same time, the screams of soldiers echoed outside—the hellish breath of the Shadow Warhorse. The battle quickly devolved into a one-sided massacre. Xiu Yi pushed her dark sword techniques to their limits; with each slash, several enemy soldiers fell. Even the last soldier, who had already fled far away, was sliced in two by Xiu Yi's wind blade. After carefully examining the confidential documents stored at the outpost, Xiu Yi tore a piece of the dead soldier's uniform and used his blood to write a message on the wall: "

Your Majesty, King Eltoia:

I have heard that your army is terrified of our Imperial Army, to the point of being paranoid and seeing threats everywhere, trembling with fear on the border. I do not believe it! With the wisdom and courage of your soldiers, how could they act like such a woman and dwarf… But rumors abound, and no consensus is reached… I have now tested it, and it is indeed utterly futile. I sincerely hope that your army will take decisive action; then the rumors will dissipate on their own! We eagerly await Your Majesty and your army's wise decision!"

Respectfully presented by the Knight of Gruprita of the Reinga Empire.

As Hugh had predicted, this incident became one of the main triggers for war between the two nations. At the time, Hugh even considered inscribing on the wall:

"Hadenberg was here!" but felt the intention was too obvious and had to abandon the idea.

The attack on the True Pig Bend outpost was reported rapidly up the chain of command, but with each level higher, the intelligence changed:

"

The True Pig Bend outpost was attacked by nearly ten treacherous Imperial magic knights; all officers and soldiers were killed!"

"The True Pig Bend outpost was attacked by over a thousand Imperial soldiers. The Empire had been planning this for a long time, and dozens of them were magic knights. Although our troops were outnumbered, we still inflicted heavy losses on the enemy before retreating!"

"The Imperial Cold Soul City fortress commander, Hardenburg, known as the 'Butcher of the Rainy Night,' led nearly ten thousand men and hundreds of magic knights to massacre the border town of Belan. Our officers and soldiers stationed at the True Pig Bend outpost, filled with righteous indignation, repelled them with a surprise attack, suffering only minor losses!

" "The Southern War Commander of the Reinga Empire, General Barbagsar, led an army of nearly 100,000 and over a thousand magic knights to attack our country. Our army fought fiercely against them at True Pig Bend, and ultimately won a great victory, killing hundreds of magic knights, including Hardenburg. Nearly half of the enemy force was annihilated, and their commander, General Barbagsar, fled in disarray after being seriously wounded!" This was the final battle report submitted to King Eltoa.

At the time, King Eltoa simply laughed off this report, but when he saw Xiu Yi's message, he immediately ordered a nationwide mobilization.

For a time, soldiers and citizens of the Kingdom of Eltoa were constantly reminding each other: "Remember True Pig Bend!" "Remember True Pig Bend!"

Upon receiving news from within the Kingdom of Eltoa, the Reinga Empire also ordered all troops in the Southern War Command to be on high alert; a great battle was imminent!

It could be said that Almidi laid the fuse for this war, which was then ignited by Xiu Yi.

At dusk, by a small lake in the forest, Xiu Yi cleaned the blood from his body and stood quietly. Gazing at his reflection in the water, Xiu Yi smiled, and the evening breeze carried his laughter into the distance
